Photoshop :: Smooth Text Bug In CS4

Jul 24, 2009

When I type using "Smooth" font smoothing and the font size is small, all my characters appear in boxes (see image below). It does not happen if the font size is larger (say above 14pt). It also does not happen if I use "Crisp" or "Strong" but it happens to "None" as well. I encountered this problem in CS4 with OpenGL enabled. I turned it off but the problem remained. I also tried to open the same file in CS2 and the problem was exactly the same. I have not encountered this problem in other applications. I've updated my graphics drivers but no change.Thanks!  System Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz2 GB DDR2 RAM512MB Ati Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XTWindows XP Professional SP2

Photoshop :: Text In PS Appears Fuzzy - Why Not Smooth Vector?

Jul 23, 2007

When I put text into photoshop CS3, and then zoom into it, the edges are all fuzzy and jaggy.

I was of the opinion that all text were vectors in PS and so the edges should be smooth as. Unfortunately, the text prints out all jaggedy on my laser printer also just like it looks on the screen. I've also played with the anti-alias options somewhat. Obviously when I do this in Illustrator, it is spot on vector, but not in PS.

What am I doing wrong here? When I convert the text into a shape, sure... the nice vector lines appear around text. But shouldn't the text be vector straight up when I create a text layer in PS, and then I should be able to rasterize it when adding filter effects etc?

Is there any way for me to work with my text in Photoshop in sharp vector-resolution so that it's sharp at all resolutions? Let me describe a test I've done:

I open up a A4 300 ppi resolution document in Photoshop and simply type the word "Photoshop" at 72pt size Myriad Pro font. The anti-aliasing is set to 'Crisp'. Firstly, it doesn't look the best as it is on the screen with the edges 'jaggy'. Secondly, I hit print and it tells me I'm printing to a non-postscript printer (i.e my laser which I know IS postscript!!). When it prints out, it looks crap just like it did on my screen (edges jaggy).

I then open up a simple A4 document in Illustrator, type the word "Photoshop" at the same size text as outlined above. Looks great on screen OBVIOUSLY because it's vector-based and is sharp at all resolutions. I hit print, it it spits out the document perfectly printed as it is on screen.

I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this with Photoshop, but my text looks garbage only when using Photoshop. Not with any other program out there (ie. MS Word, Publisher, Illustrator, Serif Drawplus, Serif Pageplus, Serif Photoplus....)

Paint.NET :: How To Fill Text With Smooth Edges

Aug 10, 2011

I'm trying to figure out how to fill this text with smooth edges. The blue part is the font I'm using and the white part is what I filled, using the paint bucket. You can see some jagged/uneven edges between the white and blue. I have tried different blurs, median at low radius, smart blur and several other things. I have even tried those things on just the blue text before filling with the paint bucket and it still shows up like this.

Photoshop :: Get A Smooth Edged Cut Out Without Gap?

Oct 10, 2012

When trying to cut out a piece of an image such as with cmd shift J with anti aliasing turned on, there is a gap between the cut out and the new image about as wide as the marquee. If I turn anti aliasing off there is no longer a gap, but then I have a very jagged cut out, since may of the pieces I'm cutting out are circular. Is there anyway to still get a smooth edged cut out without the gap?

Photoshop :: Smooth Edges

Jan 13, 2006

I'm trying to smooth the edges of an image I have. Would like to try two things.

First is,- simply smooth the edges (this is an image with people in it, and not a shape,-so I don't get the wanted effect when I do "Gaussian blur" as the whole image is being blured).

Another thing I would like to achieve is i.e. having a 600*800 image(white background) with a smaller image in the middle. Then somehow manage to blure the edges of the image and by using a gradient colour to make the blured edges cover the empty area around the pic as well... (The gradient to start at the edge on each corner of the pic and finish at outer edges of 600*800 image)..

Also, is it possible to draw a frame? Have a pic which I would like to create a tilted frame around (CTRL+T). Only manage to draw a coloured square/circle, then having to cut out the middle of the square to see the image on the layer beneath.

Created a new style in "Layer style", but where do I find this saved style?..

Photoshop :: Feathering Not Smooth

Oct 16, 2008

feathering not being smooth. When applying a vignette to a portrait the feathered result looks more like a topographical map than nice smooth transitions. I have tried every possible combination in "Refine Edge", and this seems to have started the same time that Bridge started locking up on me. I have been seeing this on my finished portraits when they come back from the lab - so it isn't my display .

I am using PS CS3 on an XP lap top.

Photoshop :: Edges Not Smooth After Recoloring

May 1, 2013

I am a novice in photoshop and I've been trying to accomplish what seems to be an easy process. I received an illustrator file of a logo that I'm trying to work on...it has several issues that I'm trying to fix...in photoshop how to use illustrator. My major issue is recoloring parts of the image while keeping the edges smooth. It's currently brown and I just need it black. I have tried the following methods:

-Magic wand the brown part and create a new layer via copy
   -using brush to simply paint over it
   -using paint can to fill the selection - anti aliased, I've changed the tolerance a million times

-Use straight paint brush to trace over it, using a soft edge brush
    -my hand isn't steady enough to do it

-Magic wand and create new layer then do and over lay

-Converting it to black and white
    -it turns gray

Photoshop :: Smooth Displacement Effect

Oct 5, 2011

Filter > Distort > Displace is undervalued gem, yet it has significant drawback - the displacement does not interpolate between adjustment pixels. This shortcoming in combination with the fact that Photoshop uses very fine noise to smooth transitions between gradations in 8-bit channels and therefore creates very unsightly, jugged effect even when displacement source is a gradient. Unfortunately the filter does not work with 16-bit channels and its closest relative - Liquify uses meshes instead of images for input.

So here is my question: does any of you aware of a way, in Photoshop or otherwise to create silky smooth displacements within 2D imagery (there are bunch of software to accomplish it in 3D) using interpolated 8 bit or original 16-bit (or higher) images as source?

The attached image was produced by displacing perfectly smooth word "test" with plain black to white gradient at 999% displacement strength.

Photoshop :: Smooth Displacement Filter?

Feb 26, 2004

is there a way to create smooth displacements using images as map. Since displace filter has only 256 levels it consistently creates jaggy results when used with settings of 100% and above. So this filter works reasonably well for small displacements and small images, but try to displace group of pixels 500% in 10 by 10 inch file at 300 dpi even using silky smooth gradient. Desired effects can be achieved to some extent with liquify filter, but that filter in turn lacks ability to use images as maps. I hoped that 16-bit support in CS would extend to displace filter giving us 64000 levels insted of 256, but this is not the case. Gradients themselves can be very smooth now, but displace filter will not accept 16 bit files.
