Photoshop :: Ruler Not Keeping Absolute Measurement
Apr 28, 2013
I was under the impression that the rulers across the top and bottom of the canvas were measuring the length and width of the window at the given resolution.
However, this can't be the case, because I notice that when I crop a photo down from a width of 70 to a width of 20 on the ruler, when the crop finishes, the width of the canvas is back to looking like 70, so the ruler is not absolute, but some kind of relative measure? And is there a way to get an absolute ruler either of any unit?

I have created a custom measurement tool to measure distances (captured from sattelite imagery, and using the distance key as the guide) and it works great. However, I would like to be able to use the same tool to measure curves/radiuses. Say for instance a mountain road. I know the scale of the photo, and can measure any straight (line) angle, but can I do the same for a curve or radius using the same scale?

Is there a new plugin or anything available to allow selecting a ruler measurement in feet with Paint.Net?
Or anything in the works yet? All I see is pixels, inches, or cenimenters. Maybe a free third party overlay or something.

I am struggling to create absolute coordinates on my autocad. I've done it before and tried on different computers drawing the same shape and it works but for some reason when i enter the points into autocad on my comp a line is created instead of a triangle.

I am still having trouble moving objects to precise coordinates. For instance, the thing I drew may be in the correct position in the x-y plane but I want to move it in the positive z direction a precise number of units. Or move it along the y axis by specifying where I want it to be not how far I want it to move.
I see...just use the tab key.

what a saturday night with the drawing ok here is the point when we draw a rectangle, we can see the properties about it (pr ENTER) But i want to see absolute angle value . Or absolute rotation, doesn't matter how to call it.
You can see it for line, but can't for rectangle or polyline.

I have a problem with absolute and relative coordinate regarding drawing an arc.
From my previous studies, I thought whenever I input coordinates in command line, in order to use absolute coordinates I just enter them. If I want to use relative coord, then I can prefix them with @ sign.
For an arc I input as follows: start point: 0,0 2nd point: 500,500 end point: 1000,0. I was expecting to get a half circle from origin to 1000,0 point but to my surprise I find out that CAD gets the input coordinates as relative.
Am I missing something? 1.dwg1.jpg Is this behavior same for all other object drawings?

So I have a lot of 2D drawings (a couple thousand roughly) that I need to go through and shift the objects within to the absolute 0,0 position. That way, when we insert them into a new drawing, everything is centered appropriately and not way off the screen.
Instead of:
Open File > Select Objects > "MOVE" > Specify Basepoint > " * 0 , 0 " > Center View on Newly position Objects > Save File > Close File
... Repeat ...
By way of a LISP routine, or a script that could automatically do the above steps on it's own. Even something that doesn't require me to hit *, then tab, then 0, then tab, then 0 again.

Having trouble recently with tracking,For example if i start the line tool, and track from a point, i am given absolute coordinates instead of relative coordinates from that initial point. Absolute coordinates are not much useful to me, I want to be able to start a line at a certain distance from another point.

How to switch Civil 3D back to drawing in absolute coordinates at all times (even during the PLINE command!)? And what would be a good reason for changing the default coordinate entry at the commandline from absolute to relative, anyhow?

The question is basically when you copy the White Balance setting from one image and paste it into another, is the pasted setting an absolute value or a relative value?
Â
For example... I import three RAW images, each shot with Auto White Balance.
Â
Image #1 is a gray card and with a WB of 6500K.Image #2 is a product shot with a WB of 6000KImage #3 is a product shot with a WB of 6200KÂ
Let's say I adjust the WB in Image #1 to 6400K - an adjustment of -100K from the "as shot" WB.
Â
When I copy those WB settings from Image #1 to Images #2 and #3, will the target images get an absolute value of 6400K? Or an adjustment of -100K?
Â
Would I have:
Image #1 = 6400KImage #2 = 6400KImage #3 = 6400KÂ
... or ...Â
Image #1 = 6400KImage #2 = 5900KImage #3 = 6100K

Is it possible to assign an absolute URL from a subordinate file to land at a label within timeline of an Edge file.
Â
I am creating a site which is too large for one file and it would be better for the subordinate files to access the master. With Flash I have usually achieved this by having one shell file which loads and unloads files according to the buttons clicked.
Â
To minimise the number of html (an) files I organise the site as follows:
Â
Home page - contains "courses", "about", "contact"
the subordinate files such as info, links, treatments, acupuncture, remedial massage etc etc need to have linke to "contact" say which is within the Home page timeline. Here is the example I am working on and you may see the problem of scale involved: URL....
Â
The first four buttons come in one file while all the rest are separate files which at present can only link back to home page.

According to Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book, there's a ruler tool hidden behind the Eyedropper tool. All I see are the Eyedropper tool, the Color sampler tool, and the Count tool.
I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, v10.0.1
How do I get the ruler tool?

I use the ruler tool a lot and hate the way it keeps reverting to the eye-dropper tool in the toolbar all the time! Is there a way to stop this from happening? If you use the ruler tool, then some other tools all seems okay until you save the image - at that point the ruler is replaced with the default eye-dropper tool. Therefore if you want to use it again you have to select it again which is a pain. Most tools seem to stay as they are when saving except the ruler. This was the same in CS3 by the way. I was hoping this might have been fixed in CS4. I'm using CS4ext in Vista Business.

I frequently use a flatbed scanner to capture images of them. I normally import the scan into Photoshop and tweak it before saving.
I'd like to also be able to easily put a ruler in the scanned image to show the size of the item scanned. A layer that was transparent except for a ruler that ran along the sides and top of the image would be perfect. Can I create such an image and then paste it on top of each scanned image?
Is there an easier way to do what I want to do? Maybe something already in Photoshop, or some kind of plug-in?
I'm using Photoshop Elements,

Some of you guys can probably whip this up really quickly, would you mind emailing me the PSD file at gjowen@knology.net, can you put a black rectangular border around the ruler so I will be able to cut it out easier?

Something that has always bothered me since Photoshop's beginnings was that in high resolution files, at extreme screen magnifications, you can't measure using the rulers easily. In other programs, as you magnify the image on the screen, the ruler marks will keep reading their measurements. In Photoshop, you only get the full inch readings, not fractions of the inch. So if I want to draw a guide at 1/16" or find something at 1/16" in Photoshop, all I see is:
You have to shrink the image back down to find the 1" line and then zoom back and count the fractions to find the one you are looking for. I know you can use the ruler tool, but let's say you want to paint, or select starting at 1/16". Using the ruler tool becomes problematic, when all you want to do is see where 1/16" is on the screen.

In CS4, I could crop a larger picture to a size such as 9"x12" without actually resizing it, just eliminating the unwanted areas. It seems this is no longer possible as now when cropping, the positions on the rulers are not marked as I determine the crop size. So I can set the size to be 9x12, and whatever crops will expand to that, I assume with interpolated pixels and possible detail loss.Â
Â
If unconstrained is used, then you don't know what the size will be till the crop is done and it realigns with the rulers.
Before, I could either enter the numbers, such as 6" 8" 300dpi, if I wanted to enlarge a smaller image, as I still can do now. But also, with CS4, I had made a preset with no numbers, similar to unconstrained, but with the positions showing on the rulers, so I could draw to whatever size I wanted, within a larger image, so when a crop was made, area was removed but there was no re figuring of the size. This is more like cutting out a picture on paper, while now it seems only a stretching of the area can be done.

I like to set lines for cropping on the canvas. The vertical ruler is perfectly accurate. The horizontal ruler is off by alot. This is on cs4. The canvas size is adjusted to be A2 (420x594mm) The crop marks are with the ruler in inches to 16x20.

In some of the Photoshop "Extended" versions, there was a function in which one could apply a known measurment to an image and then determine other dimensions in the image. For example, if one were designing a sign for a building and shot a picture of the building with a known 5' doorway, one could use the measure tool (or whatever it was called in that function) to tell Photoshop that the doorway was 5'-0" wide.
From there, after you laid in the sign design, and used the measure tool on the sign image, Photoshop would tell you the dimensions of the sign based on the scale you set with the doorway. Now for the big question: One, does that function still exist, and two, if so, where do you find it?

I'm recording measurements (gray value) in a selection, using the "record measurement" in the measurement log panel. I need to repeat this over thousands of images. I've written an action that opens the images one by one (batch process), records the measurement and closes them.
However, after exactly 700 measurements, Photoshop stops and says that it cannot record this measurement. I've tried this with CS4 and CS5 (extended) as well, and I get the same result. why Photoshop measurement log has this "700 entry" limit?
