Photoshop :: Restoring Opacity To Transparent Areas?

(For those who know Corel PhotoPaint: I'm looking for the equivalent of "paint on transparency" mode)
I need to cut out an image from a transparent background. Is there a way to do that with Photoshop Elements 10?
In other words, I have an image (say a face) that is on a rectangular background that is transparent. I need to cut away all the transparent area so there is NO background, just the face, and an irregular shaped image. Is that possible with Photoshop?
This is for inserting the image in another program (Sketch Up) which does not always allow transparency.
Using PS CS4 on Windows XP. I have an image on the left with apples showing 4 that are transparent (opacity set to 50%). I am wondering if there is a way to make the apple look transparent, but not transparent to the others so that the apples look more like they do on the right (not going through each other). I understand these are completely solid, but I was wondering if there is a way to make an object look like it's transparent, but not be able to go through another object.

Photoshop only allows me to create a new opacity layer which simply subtracts from the PNG's native opacity - it can't add to it. What I need is to INCREASE opacity.
In other words: I have parts of this PNG which are semi transparent, and I need them to become opaque. How can I do that?
EDIT: it as a single RGBA pixel value. I need to turn (0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.0) into this (0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 1.0). Do you see?
Using the eraser tool or several other methods I can set pixels in a layer to be semi-transparent. Let's say I save such a layer without history. How do I make these pixels 100% opaque again? Is there some tool that does the opposite of the eraser?

If there is a tool or plug in, or effective technique for copying the translucent areas of an image?

This is the image I cut out, then added blurs by using color selection and then brushes, and the blur and motion blur tool, but its not an exact copy of the translucent areas.
I started trying to mess around on paint.net trying to make a new background. I have the start of my design but it is all on top of white and that ruins it. Is there a way that I can either make the white transparent or change it all to a different color? It is the only white in the whole picture, but it is divided up into a bunch of places.

These transparent areas were initially marked white in LR 3.6. and, most importantly, it was readily possible to modify these areas with the brush or repair tools in LR. After updating to LR5 and importing my LR 3.6 libraries I realised that all of the retouche and modified transparent areas are white again and all the retouch I did is gone, where by e.g. the circles indicating where I used the repair tool are still in place.
How can I retrieve and retain the modifications I made in LR 3.6?
How can I turn transparent areas in TIFs within LR into areas I can modify?
I am in the process of adding lighting effects to one of my images. I'm trying to get a lightning effect, and decided to use Supernova off of the image's frame. This worked for full-frame layers, but on smaller layers, not so well.
What's happening is that I'm trying to get single objects in layers to have a lighting effect, but it's lighting up the transparent space around them, making a distinctly brighter area... well, it's better if I show you:

How to merge two or more specific layers together, that'd be fantastic.
I have a logo file, saved as PNG, that is black on transparent. Very simple file, just stylized black lettering on a transparent background. In Illustrator CS5, I can place that file, do a "Live Trace" in "Lettering" mode, and Illustrator will correctly ignore the transparent areas when I expand the trace. After expanding, I'm left with scalable paths and an easy way to change the fill color to have the logo work with my background.
Fast forward to Illustrator CS6. I try to do the same thing but a) there is no "lettering" preset for Image Trace and b) there is no setting I have yet found to cause Illustrator to ignore the transparent areas when I expand. If I then fill, everything inside the bounds of the placed image (the square containing the logo) is filled with that color. The only way I've found to get similar results is to go through the layers panel after the Expand and deselect each piece of the image that should not be filled. I have a hard time believing this is the desired approach.
how to make only certain areas of a stock images transparent.

I can only have it 100% opaque or 100% transparent (which is when the slider is 50% or below) anywhere else 51=99% acts as 100% opaque!!!
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a drawing in Acad 2010 which consist of about 6000 lines. The image is a ship, and I need the drawing to insert in a HMI screen.
Now my problem: The accomedation of the ship is white, as is the background of the sheet. I need the drawing with a black background, but want to keep the white color of the accomedation of the ship. When I change the backgroundcolor of the sheet to black, the white areas inside the drawing will also change into black. If I trie to hatch the white areas inside the drawing the program gives a messages that there are to many open bounderies.
I tried to make a blok of the drawing and move it on a black square, but then again the white areas will turn black.
So for short: How can I make the white areas non-transparent without using the hatch-command?????
I'll make the important parts bold.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt does it every 4-6 times which is really really often since you brush about 10 times every 3 seconds or so when digital painting especially when shading, lighting, blending, etc with brushing.
Why does it do this? I cant recall when it started doing this but I think it was either when I updated from CS4 to CS6 or maybe it just randomly kicked in. I already updated my drivers and re-installed my tablet.
What is the difference between rooms and areas? Why create an area schedule off 'areas' as opposed to using 'room' areas? Can you create a schedule off room areas?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn the image below I have an aerial photo of an Island. I need to make it so as water areas are black and land areas are white (not greyscale) almost like a silhouette. My first plan was to draw round the island with a black paint brush and then use the "bucket fill" with a suitable threshold to fill all of the areas up to the black outline with black, however this doesn't work as the bucket fill either breaks through the black line or when I reduce the threshold, doesn't color the water areas solidly.

The problem is, even if you use the opacity of the layer as a keyframe, the object will not instanlty vanish, even if it is only on for the timeruler for a quick amount of time.
I need a tool that will drop from 100% opacity to 0% instantly.

After testing I uninstalled CS2 assuming all the CS6 icons would return. They didn't and now I'm left with blank white icons for things like Actions, Filters, Plugins, etc.
How can I get my CS6 icons back? Will uninstalling - reinstalling CS6 restore them? Is there an easier way? I need them back as I'm writing some documents that require screen shots and I need those icons back.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe top image looks like a negative but it's actually a print from an old, old roll of 35mm film. Most of the photos printed as faded B&Ws, but some printed like this. I'd like to restore the photo as best I can, but I'm not getting good results (second image). I first inverted the image and then desaturated. Then I did adjustments with curves. The resulting image is confusing - the light source seems backwards.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy computer crashed today while photoshop CS5.1 was saving/writing to a psd file. When I started my computer back up, and tried to open the file again, It only displayed 1 layer shown as a corrupted image (As Shown Below - the Red Image). When I click on the file in the "Open" window (The Gray Image Below), the psd shows up correctly in the Preview window but doesnt show correctly when opened.
I have lost all of my layers, by the way I have worked on this psd for weeks and I need some way to recover it. I have tried "corrupted psd recovery programs", they did not work. I have tried forums - I found no answer. I have tried locating the .tmp file but it is no where to be found.
Does photoshop have a cache or a history? maybe for previously saved versions of psd files? Or does Windows 7, 32 Bit have a file recovery method? I have tried a windows 7 recovery method but it only recovers files from previous restore points that may be weeks old. This is very important that I do my best to fix this psd file or at least recover some layers, I have put in too much time and effort.
I have a scanned image. As you can see there is a line that above it the color has faded. IS there a technique / command(s) to restore the faded colors to the ones below the line?
