Photoshop :: No Selection When Exiting Quick Mask Mode
Jan 27, 2006
trying to mask a certain area of a face with another picture, so I use the quick mask tool to paint in the area, but when I exit it and enter standard mode, there is nothing selected. It does however act as if there is a selection, because the other layer only is added to that section.
Also, I don't know if this is related to the other problem, but when I move another image into the original one to create two layers, then select the overlay blending option, I am happy with how it looks. However, after adding the layer mask, the other layer is really pale around the masked area.

i have 3 layers in photoshop. Backgroundlayer1layer2Now on layer 2 i did a selection and entered into quick mask mode and then applied gussian blur.
When this is done does the selection borders try to blend with the back ground or will they try to blend with the layer 1 as it is the layer just behind the layer 2. In case if there is no background, I mean if all three are layers then what happens?

Ok, so i'm trying to cut an image out in photoshop like usual, and i go into quick mask mode, make my selection, go back in to normal mode and my image that i need cut out is selected, nothing else. However, when i cut it out, it takes some of the image that i didn't select with it, but only parts of it and they are kind of transparent. Anyone know what the problem is?

I have recently installed Photoshop CS6 after previous happy experience with CS3. The software appears to be seizing up when editing a selection in quick mask mode (image or layer mask) under the following conditions:
Â
- 64 bit mode
- image > screen size, especially at 100% maginification
- or image magnification adjusted whilst in quick mask
Â
The red mask appears slowly and only where I move the mouse curser - but will not cover the entire masked area. The software freezes, and I have to kill the process from the OS. Task manager shows its status as 'running' and memory / CPU do not appear to be maxed out.
Â
System info:
Â
Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1 20120808.r.519 2012/08/08:21:00:00) x64
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:5, Stepping:5 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, HyperThreading

For some reason my quick mask mode stopped working. I can go into quick mask mode. I can highlight what I want to select. but when I exit out to make the changes I wanted to, the only thing selected is the outside edge of the image I'm working on. So instead of having the extent of the image and the part I highlighted selected (basically everything except what I colored in QMM) only the extent of the image is selected.
I have even uninstalled photoshop, re-booted, and re-installed photoshop and I still have the same problem.

When I make a selection on a photo with quick mask in photoshop CS3 and shift > Ctrl > I and delete the background, my image that i'm left with is like 50% opaque. I don't know why its doing this. I've even tried Ctrl > J and then deleting the background and its still opaque. So I am needing some help here because i need to figure out why the images i'm selecting with QM aren't coming out at 100% opacity. Thanks. Here's what it looks like when I delete the background after doing Shift > Ctrl > I

I have a problem with this command : "Toggle composite and grayscale mask in Quick Mask mode"I know i have to press the tidle key " ~ " to activate it but i'm using an Azerty keyboard (belgium) and i have trouble with it.The only way i can use the tidle key on my keyboard is to press "Option + n" keys.
Â
So in Photoshop, i load a channel selection, turn into "quick mask mode" and then press "Option + n", but nothing happens. If i try with "Command+Option+n", i open the window for a new document.I have tried ALL combination of keys but nothing worked.I have also tried to change the keyboard input to Britain, Usa, etc but it still doesn't work.
Â
I'm using the english version of Photoshop CS6 (Subscription), and an Azerty Keyboard (Belgium) on a Mac Osx Snow leopard. How can i solve this problem ?

My question is this (its pretty easy so I hope its just a stupid oversight on my part) but anyway...
I just got into messing around with photoshop lately and in a tutorial in a magazine I read for a certain step I read the following:
1) "We need an accurate selection of the figure, so go to the Channels palette and click on the Red channel. Choose the Brush Tool and select a hard round brush from the Brush Preset Picker . Hit Q to enter Quick Mask Mode and paint over the figure...after completing the Quick Mask, hit Q again to exit Quick Mask and save this selection via Select>Save Selection naming it Outline. Click on the RGB channel, before returning to the Layers palette."
Now that was simple enough to understand and the first time I went about it it worked fine...as soon as I clicked "Q" again to leave quick mask mode the portion i just colored in in quick mask was selected by a dotted line...
My problem is that now it doesn't do that anymore. No matter what .jpg file I use...after i leave quick mask mode there is no selected outline and no option to "save selected"...the only thing that is selected is the entire square outline of the canvas...IT COMPLETELY IGNORES WHAT I COLORED IN QUICK MASK

I am using CS3 Mac, 10.0.1
I open a JPG and enter quick mask. I use the gradient tool with a radial gradient and make a small gradiated area. It appears in red fading out to the edges. So far so good.
I USE to be able to exit quick mask, and that gradient would now be a selection. What is happening now though is when I exit quick mask, the area selected is the entire image and not the gradiated area.

I'm trying to find a quicker way to create a mask. In the image below I am removed the white areas, and I use the magic wand with - (minus) selected, at the moment I have to switch between quick mask mode as to see what parts you have missed.
On the left you can see an area inside the object that has been removed and the part next to is white, I would like to be able to click this white area and it ruen red so that it adds it to the selection?
Â
how this could be done or is there an easier way in which to do this?

I'm currently jumping back and forward between quick mask mode and my standard layer. When I am in the standard layer the brush tool is performing as it should, but when I go into quick mask it is erasing my selection (red) rather than filling in where I draw!

I'm having problems getting a selection with quick mask. What I'm trying to do is get radial gradient selection in the center of an image going to the outer edge. I open an image, dupe it, hit quick mask then click the gradient tool. I choose Radial in the dialogue box and set the offset. I then draw a line from the center of the image outwards and the whirly thing shows it's working. But when I toggle the quick mask off, sometimes I have a nice round selection, sometimes I don't have anything and sometimes I have an opaque black-to-transparent gradient circle in the center.
Do I have to click the layer icon or something before I do the gradient? What am I unconsciously forgetting? Add Alpha channel (that doesn't seem to make a reliable difference)?
I've been using 2.8.10 for a short while and haven't had any other problems. Should I change back to 2.8.8? I never tried this in .8, so I don't know if it worked reliably then. Did I maybe set an environment variable wrong when I started with 10? Is this just further evidence of age-related cognitive decline and I should think about taking up tatting?

I'm using Gimp 2.8.10 on a Windows 8.1 machine, but I had this issue with earlier Gimp versions on a Win 7 machine as well. From time to time, usually after working in Gimp for a while, the marching ants around selections disappear. The most recent event happened after using quick mask. QM still shows my selection, but pressing Shift + Q to turn it off left me with no indication of the mask outline. The problem is not unique to my current machine, as I upgraded in Dec. 2013, but had the issue with an older one as well. In order to fix the problem, I save my work then restart Gimp and all is well again, for a while.

I'm drawing a blank here...anyway, I just got a new laptop (mac), and am loving it. I've gone and put XDP6 into fullscreen mode (by mistake) and can't figure out how to get out of it.
Of course I don't have a keypad, and I've not figured out how to customize the shortcut away from numpad 8.

If you look closely in the attached picture, there is a spot of light blue on the player's helmet, that looks like a mistake (think it should look like the grass behind it)...though it actually may be part of his helmet.
Â
Regardless, I'd like to take it out. My idea was to select the blue with the quick selection tool, then bring that selection out to the grass, select the grass with that size/shape of selection, copy/paste and then bring the grass selection into the blue part so it looks like grass in what was the blue part.
Â
The problem is I don't seem to be able to move the selection without taking the blue with it (so it's not an empty selection and therefore can't select a piece of the grass.)

When X7 and its Group Editing mode first came out, there were grumblings about the "Closing Document" dialog that appears when clicking on the little "X" found on the Edit Inside tab.
I am sure most folks have found that can all be bypassed (assuming you want to keep the edits you just made). But for those that haven't, simply click the Save Icon in the Standard Toolbar.

While creating various circular masks with a radial gradient from white to black, whenever I change the blending mode of the mask path Ai will throw me out of mask mode into layer editing mode. Since this is on a large document of ~2Gb file with multiple artbords for large poster & UI refresh speed is slow, this has become quite frustrating. Is this normal Ai behaviour?

I have the latest version of CS6 on my Mac, OS X 10.8.x.  I have found a bug where Quick Mask is not always activated when you select it. Meaning, you select Quick Mask and the proper pen, color, etc., and it won't paint in the mask (default = red).  It also doesn't appear to be actually /doing/ a mask either, so I don't think this is a display/driver issue.

I have recently purchased my first Photoshop editing program I am a novice to both
As I enjoy my photography I also love playing with the editing side of my hobby, so I recently purchased Photoshop Elents 6 and ditched my old built-in editing program. I have just started playing with changing the background to studio portrait photos, no I am not a pro just a simple amateur, although I am hoping to do some portrait photography as a pastime (I used to dabble a bit in that field with weddings many many years ago). I have been scouring the tutorials on the web for assistance and come across mention of 'Quick mask'. This would be very helpful to me with my photo background changing, but I don't seem to have it in my program Looking into it further, I am wondering if I have purchased the wrong Photoshop program. The mention of 'Quick mask' refers to Photoshop 6, which I thought I had, but can someone explain to me the differences between the various Photoshop programs as I am confused as to why my later version has not got what the earlier Photoshop 4 has.

This issue has been around for the last 4 versions at least, Quick Mask stops working, I am getting fed up with having tio reset photoshop to its defaults, because this means that it takes me a good 30 min to reset all of my settings again, and as this has now happened 4 times today, it is costing me money, at least CS3 was a little bit more reliable than CS4, I certainly will not be upgrading our copies of Photoshop.
Has anyone got a simple way to get Quick Mask working again without loosing the other settings from Photoshop...
Or does anyone know why this happens? My system is 4 x Quad Core CPU, running 16Gb RAM and 2 x 8800 Video Cards on x64 Windows XP, so it cannot be down to memory.

I must have 'done' something to change how it works because now when I use it, the pixels are not completely selected.
I press the quick mask button and paint the area i want to mask. Then when I have finished, I go back to normal mode. I usually push 'SHIFT' + 'CTRL' + 'I' to invert my selection and then delete everything I didn't mask however, now when I try to invert, I get the message 'No pixels are more than 50% selected'.

I run SC3 on a PC. The other day I did something that has made it so my quick mask selection no longer works but I do not know what it was. What happens is after in go into the quick mask mode (tap the q key) and with the brush color the section I wish to mask; I then tap the q key again to exit the quick mask mode but the marching ants surround the entire photo not my selection. When in the quick mask mode it does show on the title bar that I am in the quick mask mode and when I tap q again that I am going back to normal mode.
