Photoshop :: Naming Layers The Same As The File Name You Are Copying From
Sep 20, 2006
I know that title sounds confusing, but i was wondering if there is anyway to automatically name a layer the same as a separate file. For example i am creating a layered Photoshop file that contains a bunch of photos and i want each of the layers to be named the same as the separate photo files i am copying them from - make sense?
Anyway, just wondering if this can be done without having to manually type or paste in the file name.

I have created a file with about 35 layers. The top layer is needed to make the lower layers look right. My plan was to copy the first two layers into the new file, turn off the second layer, turn on the third layer, and then copy it, along with the top layer still turned on, into the same new file. I want to repeat this process until all layers have been copied. I just cannot seem to find out how to do this without a tremendous amount of extra work. So I know how to do it the looong way, but surely there is a way I can copy two layers, in their arranged order, as one new layer into a new file?

I'm creating an animation in AE eventually but initially have two hand drawn images of the same object that I've scanned into PS.
I have a single mask created that I turn into a selection to copy the two images to output as new single files to then import as 2 frame png sequence into AE.
Normally, and this is critical, the dimension of the new files would/should be exactly the same. But they're not! How is this possible, the selection is the same for both layers.

I've used E- for Existing and P- for Proposed for my layers and/or style names. For Object Layers, I've used OBJ- with modifiers and set the layers inside the styles to 0. This works ok, and Civil 3D objects obviously stand out and are easily isolated thru layiso and such, BUT having styles set to 0 presents a problem when dumbing down a drawing to send to another firm. The C3D Objects that are dumbed down are on layer 0 which isn't good.
We're generating a new template for 2013 and want to gear it towards the National Cad Standards on some level and do away with 0 as the style layer and actually have the style layers set to something other than 0.
My initial thoughts from a simplistic standpoint are:
V- for Survey and Existing features
C- for Proposed features
I understand there's many more designators. We mainly do Civil and Utility work.I know V is a designator for Survey but can it cover and should it cover existing features too that aren't surveyed, for example if we receive mapping from someone and want to reassign some layer names? Is C- strictly for Proposed/Design work?
I'm reviewing a template we're working with someone on and they assigned the layers inside an Existing Surface Style to C-Topo-Majr and C-Topo-Minr. They assigned the layers inside the Proposed Surface Style to C-Topo-Majr-N and C-Topo-Minr-N. The only difference is the N for New, between the style layers.
Shouldn't the Existing Surface Style layers start with V-?Just trying to get some feedback on a simplistic approach to Layer naming and keeping with the National Cad Standards on some level.

Photoshop CS3.
The problem is that under a Managed Active Directory Account the software will refuse to automatically add the appropriate file extension to a file. Trying to save a file without MANUALLY inputting the file appropriate file extension will give an error "do you want to overwrite the file .psd?" . The file will then SAVE, but without an extension.
for example...
1) New file created - named "test".
2) File> SAVE... file requester comes up. Type in a name without the extension - "test" and choose the file type (doesnt matter if it is a PSD, JPG, PNG, TIF, but for this argument we will use PSD).
3) Error appears - "Do you want to overwrite file .psd?"
4) click OK
5) file saves as "test".
6) close file
7) File> OPEN... File is not listed. Change Filetype filter to ALL FILES. "test" appears. Note that "test" HAS NO PS ICON!! Select "test".
8) error appears - file is unknown filetype.
9) try OPEN AS. Select file. Select type. File opens.
HOWEVER.... if I name the file MANUALLY, there is no problems either saving or loading.

File naming settings are being ignored by PS 8.0 when i Save for Web > Edit Output Settings > Saving Files. I want to add "_50" after the document name, but PS just saves the file in it's original document name.
When I split the image into two slices and choose Slices: Selected Slices in the Save Optimized As Dialog, PS does it right, and saves the slice as "[documentname]_50". But ofcourse i don't want to save slices, but the whole image.

I'm taking a web design class, and we are doing a preliminary layout in Photoshop CS5. Last night the prof taught us how to do something he calls "slide copying." It's basically holding down Opt or Alt while clicking on the layer, and then sliding it downward. You then get a new layer and its number.
Here is what I am trying to do. I have a 1" border around my web page. I am typing in a single letter, and then copying it. How can I make sure that when I drag it into its new position, it will be aligned with the original letter? There are going to be dozens of these going around the border, so I want to get this right from the start.
Something like "distribute horizontal centers"?
I know that I can group layers and make any changes there, of course, but I'm wondering about the easiest way to do it in the first place.
The border will be around all sides.

I have a button that is comprised of two layers. I use this button extensively on my page so I'm trying to copy both layes at once. I make one layer active, then I link the other layer, then I use the Move Tool and press ALT, but only one layer gets copied. Is there an easy way to copy 2 Layer elements at once in Photoshop 6.0?

I have PS CS and I'm experiencing something odd. Whenever I save a slice, it appends info to it, regardless of what I set in the slices preferences dialogue box. So, selecting save for web and choosing a slice, then naming it header.gif will end up with a file of header_13.gif (whatever slice number it is). I'm sure it didn't used to do this, or have I lost my marbles?
I have to go to the folder and rename every slice manually. Surely Adobe didn't intend this so what am I missing? Also, if I set everything in the slice preferences to NONE, leaving just .ext as the last option, every slice is saved as _.gif, regardless of what I type into the filename "save as" box.
I did a search on here and a search in Google but couldn't find anyone with this problem so maybe I have software conflicts?
Also, the PSD isn't longer than 27 letters (I've seen that as a problem before).

picture1.jpg to picture1_s.jpg
I want to put an extension on the resised small images.
I can get the batch job to alter the dpi and sizes but I can't find a way to add a letter into the file name as above to differentiate the different sizes.

In PS CS3, is there a simple way to copy the contents of a partially transparent layer from one image and paste them into another image of the same size without PS trying to center the pasted content? If so, how is this accomplished?
Here's the situation. I am trying to make a bunch of blending mode reference images. They consist of a base color layer, a blend color layer, and several different layers for labels. The base and the blend color layers have off center squares of gradiated colors, so you can see how the blend changes based on changes to the base and blend colors.
I've finished grayscale versions for each layer blending mode, now I'm working on a color version. I have created one (Luminosity), and now I want to past the blend color and base color layers from the color Luminosity image into all the grayscale images so that I can reuse the labels in grayscale images.
When I drag the layers from the layer palette of one document to the document window of another document, it places the color squares in the location based upon where I drop them. If I copy from one document to the other, it centers the color squares (they need to be off-center to work with the pre-existing labels). I've not tried replacing the transparency in the blend and base color layers, because... well.. because I shouldn't have to. Dagnabit. But, I suspect that would work.
I'm running Photoshop CS3 Extended v10.0 on Mac OS X v10.4.10 w/2GB RAM.

I have an issue with the behaviour of the alpha channels and layers.I have upgraded to the latest version.I have tried resetting the preferences per Julianne Cost's Key Board Short Cut (KBSC) method. None of the preferences were reset.I still have all my saved workspaces available etc etc.
After making a selection in the channels pallet and saving using the "Save selection as channel" button I have what appears to be a bug when trying to import the selection into the layers panel.
I make the selection. Save it as a channel. Make the selection active. Then switch over to the layers pallet. I then try to copy the selection across using the KBSC 'Cmd J'.On the first attempt I only get an exact copy of the layer (in a single layer document).
However, when I use the same KBSC a second time (immediately after the first attempt - no changes) the third layer created has my selection as masked. So after the process in a single layer document my layers stack up as follows (I have layed them out as if in the layers pallet).
-Layer 1 (with just my selection)
-Background Copy (an exact copy)
-Background (with lock icon).

Here's what I want to do:
I want to process a series of pics for my photography business and I think I have a way to do a great deal of them with minimum effort. What I want to do is to work on one photo and create a smaller project that I copy and paste my Adjustment layers in. Then, I want an action to go through my queue of pics and copy the layers over, create a blurred layer (for skin touch up) and a sharpened layer. That way, when it's done, all I have to do is open each saved PSD and do touch up as needed.
The problem is that I can't get an action to recognize that I'm dragging a layer over from one comp to another. Is there a way, instead of creating a brand new action for each set of pics, to do what I want to do?

I am struggling with file naming.
We are implementing the vault and do not want to have to rename each file with design copy.
Any way where the filename of a part will change according to either assembly pararmenters or iProperties?
Another question I had would be involving a rule that would rename each ipt within an assembly by giving at a suffix/prefix once the assembly is completed.

My images are geotagged. With Lightroom 5, I can reverse geocode the images to have Country, State and City in the IPTC fields. However, unless I go in each field, they are greyed. When I want to export the images, I want to use the naming convention Country-State-City-incremental number.jpg for each image, but unless the fields have been edited, lightroom ignore the fileds (and hence put ---1.jpg). How I can confirm the location without having to go to each image and edit the fields?

Is there an option to eliminate AutoCAD from automatically inserting the layout tab name into the file name when creating a PDF? Once upon a time it would only use the file name (i.e. A-101). Now it uses "A-101_Layout1" (or whatever the layout name is) by default. I either have to live with it or manually change each file name during the process of creating the PDF or after it's been created.

Is there any way that I can copy multiple layers?
If I hit copy and then paste it as a new image I only get the layer I had selected.
If I merge all the layers down to one, it takes a long time because I have to merge them one at a time. Then I have to undo all those merges to the original so I can still work with its layers, just to make a copy of the image I am working on.
And sometimes I want to copy layers from an image and actually keep them as layers in whatever it is I'm copying them to, and in that case my best option to to select each layer one at a time, copy it and paste it as a new layer in the other image. And this method doesn't always leave the layers lined up properly.
So, Is there any way that I can copy multiple layers?

I'm having some problems giving certain parts in my assembly a unique file name. Im reorganizing all of my projects in a
- content center
- designs
- libraries
way, where my projects are under designs and commonly used parts under libraries.
Now i have something like a pump. I can derrive this assembly into a solid and put it in the content center, or keep the assembly and put it in the libaries folder. since this is a part i use in multiple projects.
Now my problem is that this pump has a different name in every project, and a library part doesn't allow me to change this name. Say standard name is "centrifugal pump" while the name in project 1 would be P101, while in project 2 it has to be named P501 and so on in order to match with the flowcharts.
Is my only option here creating a solid out of these components and putting it all in my content center ( leaving my libraries folder totally empty ), adding it as a custom part afterwards ( so i can rename it ). I rather have it in my library folder, since this will keep my design folder organized without hundreds of duplicates of this pump, using different names. Besides i rather have it as an assembly so i can assign the connecting tubes of the pump to different sub assemblies of piping.
Different example, a butterfly valve excists out of 3 parts. the valve itself, and 2 connecting tubes. possible to dissemble. all 3 parts need to have the same file naming say XV900. 1 side of the valve needs to be assigned to pipe-01 while the other side of the valve needs to be assigned to pipe-02. Content center doesn't allow me to split files, but allows me to use unique file names. A library party allows me to split files ( if not read only ) but doesn't allow me to change names.

ie Parameter = Style with 4 Multi selctions 1,2,3,4
depending on selection picked we then need to change the Solid Bodies Prefix in document settings..
Example :: If style = 1 then Solid Bodies Prefix = Dave

Inventor creates a names to custom library parts based on settings and available parameters.
For all custom libraries I can create file names as I want except profile libraries.
The profile library create file name using Family Name + Stock Number and I did not find the
way to change it. I cannot get rid of that Stock Number in family name in this and other profile libraries. I wish I can use Part Number instead of Stock number in naming as more informative.
To change the file naming I do the following:
Manage - Editor - chose Library - chose family - Family Table - File Naming -
than chose required parameters to be shown as file name (for instance I have
{PARTNUMBER}), than in Map to Inventor Property: - Member.Display.Name
than OK - Refresh - Done.
All custom libraries obeys the file name changing EXCEPT the profile library.
