Photoshop :: Hair Extraction Tool...EZ Mask Or Knockout2
Nov 21, 2006
I have great trouble while extracting faces with hair and I thought I should buy a filter to do so.
Should I buy Corel Knockout 2 or EZ Mask.
I wonder if any one of you have used either of these filters and if they work well.

I used to work with another artist at a graphic design firm and he showed me a really cool way to put like an empty black, blurred mask behind people cutout or extraction which gave an illusion of depth. The mask really helped make the subject not look like an obvious knockout. He went through the steps and I should heave written it down, but failed to do so and lost the techniques.
I have been experiementing with doing a female model with flowing hair, like you see on the better fashion mags, saving the sel in channels and doing my editing there. Then I have tried using channel copies and using layer masks and it's still not the trick or result the PS artist was doing.
how I might be able to pull this masking technique out of the hat?

I am trying to place a pic of Elisabeth shue on a different background but the method I am using doesnt seem to work or I may lack the technique.
The method I was sure would work is select a color channel to get some if any contrast between the background and subject. choose high pass filter, Choose Image>Adjust>Levels (I put the levels at about 100 for left and 180 for right)
Then using the lasso I alt clicked and selected the inside of subject. With the lasso selection I ctrl deleted to fill with white. Finally I did the best clean up job to rid of any uneeded info that I could.
Went to color composite, control clicked to make selection. The selection was horrible and leaked to the outside. I also tried another picture and the same results.
How can this be done so I have a professional looking image to use for creating another picture with different scenery?

Still getting mixed results using "Refine Mask" feature. I have seen the tutorials on this -Russel B, and Juleane Kost. Sometimes the results are outstanding, other times I have to resort to contrast masking, etc. I currently have a series of portraits shot against blue (basically a blue screen). Some of the subjects have good hair contrast (very dark brown or grey). There are many parameters to set in the refine mask dialog. I need a clean, sharp silo of hair edges.
I have tried many combinations, and typically use "smart radius". But I am particularly disappointed with the results of one subject who has grey hair -good contrast against the blue. They mask tool keeps including too much of the BG blue. I have also tried decontaminating colors, but prefer to do that later with a layer set to "color". Some of the tutorials sneer at the use of Contrast Masks (which I typically get good results from). But the the Refine Mask options often produce flawed results -which is surprising with these blue screen portraits.

Ive been looking through various tutorials on how to create a mask that leaves the detail of the hair of the subject in
It seems all the tutorials I have looked at choose a subject with jet black hair, invert it, and hey presto, job done
Unfortunately, all my kids have got fair hair, and no matter what I try, find it almost indistinguishable from the background
How to do this, cos im losing my mind trying to paint strands of hair in and having the result look like Ive cut the image out of a magazine with a pair of left handed scissors (im right handed!)

Why does Illustrator place a hair line stroke around a clipping mask? How do I change that? I tried anti-alsing but as expected the entire image is applied.

If I use the data extraction tool in Express tools or go down the path of ATTEXT I can get an extraction result that includes block handle data. If I use the data extraction wizard I can't recover this handle data.
Is there a reason for this and can the data extraction (.DXE) template file be tweaked to accomplish this?

trying every layer mask combo I could think of to create a realistic shade of white hair that doesn't look like I just used the brush tool to make it.
I've tried lighting up the shadows with the curves option then using the selective color option. But all that does is make a very fake looking film to put over the eyebrows (ya it's eyebrows I'm working on, I'm trying to get them to match a white wig the subject is wearing.)
I've also tried using the solid color option, and a color overlay and that just came out weird.
Has anyone ever turned pitch black hair to white and had it still look like hair?

When I try to use the pen tool it automaticly makes a vector mask for the pen line. How do you disable that? Also, what can you do with the vector mask?

I must have 'done' something to change how it works because now when I use it, the pixels are not completely selected.
I press the quick mask button and paint the area i want to mask. Then when I have finished, I go back to normal mode. I usually push 'SHIFT' + 'CTRL' + 'I' to invert my selection and then delete everything I didn't mask however, now when I try to invert, I get the message 'No pixels are more than 50% selected'.

Here's my question re: editing an exisiting mask in CS6.
So, say I create the basic selection with the quick selection wand - for this example, maybe a selection of a horse.
But, if I don't get the area between the horses legs and want to select that area with the pen tool then delete it from the exisitng mask (i.e. clean up the mask with the pen tool) how do I do it?
I've seen lots of tutorials that talk about adding selections together, but that doesn't work in this case because my secondary selection is within the original selection.
I know this can be done with the brush tool (cleaning up masks) but I'd like to do it with the pen tool because the results are better.

I have Photoshop CS2 and I am trying to "fix" a photo. I'm using a tutorial, and it worked on a previous photo but seems to have quit on me. I made a new layer from the original layer, used filter> other> high pass (set to 3.5) then image> adjustments>desaturate. Inverted the layer added a vector mask and inverted that as well. I set the blending mode to overlay, and the foreground color to white.

Why is PS defaulting all layers to Vector Mask mode when I try to create any shape?
Eg: New File > New Layer > Draw a box ...boom ... layer has a vector mask applied to it
Why is it so ...?
As you would know...when this vector mask is applied... i cant just grab the paint bucket tool and fill the box...i have to disable the freaking mask...

So I am adding a leaf to the waterfall image. The leaf is on it's own layer with a layer mask, and was moved into position without a problem. A drop shadow was added with Layer Styles, but when trying to move the layer again, the mask moved, but the layer stayed behind.
I checked for Auto select, which was off. I unlinked the mask, tested, relinked the mask, and tested again. Same problem. Eventually it started working OK after I tried moving with first the layer active, and then the mask active, and swapping this state about three times. I could not get it to misbehave again after this.
Nothing was locked. Auto select was off. Other layers all moved OK. I can find no explanation, and think of no user error (touch wood).

I want to make a photo of a table mat into a coaster (that you stand a drink on). All i need to do is take the photo, and using the rounded rectangle tool, round off the edges. I get a solid shape, but i've tried to invert the selection and it won't.

I would like to draw a Circle with the Ellipse tool and then add a Vector Mask
next i would like to Duplicate the layer and then select the Vector Mask Thumbnail in the layers panel so that when i select the Pen tool the Intersect Shape Areas is available
however, i cannot seem to get the Vector Mask to be available it is always grayed out no matter what i try to do.
i am trying to add a "glossy" effect to the circle by using the Pen tool to draw a shape through it horizontally and then up and around the top of and joining/closing it so that i can add a white>trans gradient.
Using Ps cs6 and Windows 7

On screen this show when doing a simple layer mask fade with the gradient tool. (notice the hard transition in the black) The if I flatten it it looks fine, like this.
I don't understand why all of a sudden it is doing this, same with brushes. Just seems to happen in the layer mask which is really deceiving.

Using Photoshop CC, if you have a vector mask on a layer and attempt to crop the image, the vector mask shifts incorrectly after the crop is completed. The image is garbled. If I rasterize the vector mask to a standard layer mask, the crop works successfully.
I've checked to make sure that there are no numbers in the crop tool options. Nothing appears to be set incorrectly.

I'm currently jumping back and forward between quick mask mode and my standard layer. When I am in the standard layer the brush tool is performing as it should, but when I go into quick mask it is erasing my selection (red) rather than filling in where I draw!

how useful the mask tool is! I've been exploring it. It's perfect for working on things like erasing edges of lines, splitting objects, you name it! It's so much better than the older method of having to make objects on top of an object or whatever..

I must have fat fingered something and I now when I click on the Eraser Tool or the Brush Mask Tool instead of getting a circle or square, I get and icon of the tool instead. They still work but they're harder to use without seeing the circle or square depending on what's selected. I've been using Corel for many years and never had this happen and I can't figure out how to switch back.

My subject line pretty much sums up what I want to ask.
The thing is I've learned how to do both of them, but every textbook exercise I've done regarding one I found out that I can pull off with the other too.
Are they simply two different mechanisms for doing the same thing?
