Photoshop :: Extracting Transparent Image From Black Background
Jul 25, 2013
I have an image that is semi-transparent. I am able to take the black out of the background around it, but am unsure about how to remove the actual background from behind the image. I need to superimpose this image onto another-hence the background change. I have the newest version of PS.

I have the attached image from which I am trying to produce a logo, eventually exporting it to illustrator. I have retaken the photo of the charcoal drawing so it is placed on the same paper it was drawn on and have managed to get a reasonable amount of space on the right hand edge but the left hand edge is proving beyond me. As there are so many greys and light greys, it is proving impossible to get a good selection. When I place the logo in my wordpress site it looks awful on the right hand edge.

Below are listed the "step by step" procedure I'm going through, to isolate an image, "free" of any background. Each and every time, after removing the images original back ground, I'm left with a white back ground. List "process" by process..step by step, to "totally" isolate an image by itself (without any background) "whatsoever"!
I have now removed the background on (2) images. This is the process I go through in "order", and each time, I'm left with a white box in the background of my image.
"First" I load image.
Second I go to "layer"..
"Third" I go to "Transparency"
"Fourth", I click around image I desire to save...clicking on the "starting" point, till the ants start marching.
"Fifth", I click "select", scroll down and click "To Path"
"Sixth" I click on "Select", scroll down and click "Invert"!

I am trying to put text with a black light film in the background at the bottom of the picture and I cannot do it. I don't know how to isolate the portion of the picture I want with the text with the light black background while you can still see the picture through black background.

all transparent png files copied from Chrome and pasted into Photoshop CS6. The background is black rather than transparent. These images are one I created and exported using "save for web". It worked fine in CS5 so it must be a bug.
I constantly have to edit images taken from our website so being able to copy an image quickly with transparency intact is very important. I'm running CS6 in Windows.

I just ran into a problem, using Videostudio X5 Ultimate. When i try to import a .PNG-image with a transparent background, but then the background of the imported image turns black.
However, when i open the same image in an image-viewer, the background actually is transparent.

I seem to be having problems when I lasso round a specific part of a photo taken with a white background and then try to add that part of the image to a plain #000000 black background.
I always seem to get a white outline around the image when I place it on the black background, even when its on ZERO feathered. I don't like using feathered as it adds a smudge round the outside of the image.

I am trying to make a png (tried a gif too) by going to File >>> Export for Web.
In the new window I selected following: -
Format: PNG
Color Mode: RGB color (24 bit)
Transparency Box: Checked
In Advanced, Anitialiaced Box : Checked
Embed color profile Box: Unchecked
Interlaced Box: Unchecked
Resolution 72
The image displays in comparison window as transparent but when I save this image and upload it on my website, the background changes to black instead of transparent.
I am using windows 7 Premium (64 bit) and Corel Draw X5.
make it a transparent background image.

Running Designer pro 6.1.2.13287 on Windows 7 Home Premium
I'm probably bumbling around and buggering up the export of png formatted images, but it appears something besides transparency is getting exported as backbround.
I do `Select all' then export to png.The poorly drawn green arrows were added in photoshop to show the area I'm talking about. The xara document which is apparently also getting exported in some way.At least certain other tools see a black background in that area. Not all tools have that problem with the image. For example; photoshop sees only transparency there.
But when I browse the exported *.png files with `Epson print CD', it sees black in that area as illustrated by the screen grab below. The first two images look clean as expected (I'll explain in a moment) but the third (the one that hasn't been cleaned in Photoshop) shows the black background in that area.
The first two were cleaned up in photoshop and now appear clean as expected. So to get a usable image for import into Epson's tool I must:
1) Export as PNG from Xara
2) Open with Photoshop and run thru a procedure where anything outside the outer blue ring in the image is deleted.(Even though PS only sees transparency, if I select everything from the blue ring outward and delete it, saving back to png, then Epson's tool sees transparency there)
3) Import into `Epson Print CD' and print the graphic to a printable DVD.
How can I skip the second step? That is, how can I get a clean export in step one? What is it that some tools are seeing as black background?

I just learned how to make the background of my images transparent and am learning how to use layers. I am trying to save my pictures to picasa and photoshop so they are backed up and I can easily access them from any computer. I noticed that some of the pics are showing up all black. It's like the colors are inverted almost. I can kinda see the image in white, but mostly the whole thing is black. I noticed the same thing happened when I tried to open some of the images in paint.
I checked to see if they are all the same file type and they are not. Some are gif and some are png.
Also, some of my images won't open in windows photo gallery. They open in a blank web page. I originally go to my pictures and find them there, but when I click on them they open a page in IE instead of windows photo gallery so I can't crop them or anything.
I am trying to work on a project where I print silhouettes or simple images on vintage sheet music to use as art. I need to be able to take them to a print shop to have this done and I can't do that if the images show up black or won't open in a regular program.
I am attaching a pic that saved black like I talked about and a pic of what it is supposed to look like.

I am new to Gimp and would like to ask if there is a way to make a good worn out effect more or less like this on a black logo. The problem is that they are using a fork for it and I am a student and can't afford a fork.
The aim is to make a black print on transparent background with transparent scratched "holes". Are there any tips how to do this?

SGA gate image
I want to make the background transparent, just leaving the gate.
I've tried adding just a red alpha channel, just a blue alpha, just a green and even tried using all 3.
No matter what I do, I can get the background to go transparent but the gate ends up being semi-transparent.

I am trying to flatten an image in Photoshop while keeping my transparent background. When I flatten, it gives me this white background instead.
I've seemed to of figured it out. what I did was>merge all visible layers(except for the background layer),>command and click on the layer to select all>flatten image>command j>deselect> and then delete the flatten layer. this gave me the transparent background I was looking for."

I need PS experts to teach me how to make a transparent image, not a background. I found a image on the website, but I've been tested many times and didn't figure out how it made like this.
the center flower is 100% transparent, but it still keeps shadow and embossed area. I used blend mode for testing, but everytime if I make it to 100% transparent, I lose everything, it becomes a flat transparent area.

while messing around making a banner.
So I created two images.
The first image of the star I created on a black background. It uses the artistic > plastic wrap filter and hue/saturation effects. I was able to get this image the way I wanted.
The second image for the lighting effect, I created on a transparent background because I wanted to be able to apply the image over the star and give it the effect of running through the star. I also wanted to add its own hue/saturation effect separate from the star.
I was unable to apply any hue/saturation effect to the lighting effect image. I tried adding placing this image on top of the first (the star) and adding an adjustment layer for hue/saturation, however, when I added the colorization both images took the effect. I have the effect I want for the star, I want to be able to add the same effect, yet different coloring to the lighting waves.

I scanned an image and would like to use only the dark lines as a faded out background image. How do I extract only the black lines of the image? Or in other words how do I make the .jpg only show black and white colors and then be savable. The image is essentially a complex stick figure. The only problem is the background is a reddish color.
