Photoshop :: Cropping And Post-Document Size
Sep 25, 2008
I need to crop my images at 500x500 pixels for a project. I do a Save For Web & Devices and use JPEG, optimize at 80%. When I open up the new JPEG file, the pixel size says 500x500, but the document size says 6.944x6.944 inches at 72 resoultion, instead of 5x5 inches at 100 resolution. I've been doing the same process for months and it was correct in pixel and document size until recently, but I haven't changed any settings or my process.

I have a photo 36" x 24". I have cropped to 18.5 x 12.5" yet the document size remained the same. Now when I go to print on 13" x 19" paper, only a portion prints because the photo is too big. I shouldn't have to "scale" as then I have no way of confirming that it really will print to the crop dimensions.
Â
Since upgrading to CS6, I have had issues with how the crop is done. For example, why when I open a photo in CS6, the crop tool is already selected by default?

I am about to get a film scanner I have on order, to scan in 35mm negatives.
Â
When scanning film frames, I like the idea of setting the scan area marquee, at the scanning stage, so that it scans slightly beyond the film frame edges, so that I can carefully crop to the edge of the film frame later, in Photoshop CS6, rather than setting it, at the scanning stage, and then later, when examining the film frame in CS6, maybe discovering that I have not scanned to the edge of the film frame quite enough, as I can easily zoom right into the image when in CS6, to carefully examine where the film frame edges are.
Â
I may be reducing the resolution of the image. For example, say I scan a film frame in at 3600 ppi, and later crop the image slightly in CS6 in order to precisely trim off any slight amount of black around the film frame edges. By cropping the film frame like this in CS6, am I reducing the image resolution of the film frame to lower than 3600ppi? As I best understand it, I do not think post-cropping like this results in any reduction in image resolution.

I am using PSE 9 to crop JPEG scaned documents. In the past I have cropped these images and used the crop box to center the scanned image. The crop box usually goes past the edge of the document. When I did this in the past, the area off the document and inside the crop box would turn white, which is what I need it to do. Now it is turning black. how to get it back to defalting to white.

I have a senior project within CorelDRAW X6 (Student) that spans around 1200 pages spread across about 25 different .CDRs. I need to export all of those pages as .JPEGs so I can manipulate them in another program.
I know that you can batch export using a macro. But I only need exactly what's on the page at the page size. My solution was to crop each page (yes, one by one) and then later do a batch export on all of them. However, when batch exporting to .JPEG, I noticed that I was getting different results than when I had exported pages individually in the past. At first I thought this was a macro issue. But when I was trying various things I realized that anytime I closed a document after cropping it, upon reopen my drop shadows would be gone. And of course, I didn't realize this until I had already cropped all 1200 pages and was doing my batch export. I've tested it and if I crop a document and then batch export the pages before closing the document I can get the results I need. But that would require me to crop all 1200 pages again and my time is running short.Â
(Ignore the color differences here...I'm fairly certain it's because I didn't pay attention to my color settings on export here) Export before closing via file converter macro:
Export after closing file and then batch exporting via macro:
Any macro for cropping to page size and then exporting to jpeg (or other format) all in one fell swoop? This would hopefully bypass this issue and save me the huge problem of having to crop them all again. I could just open each document and run the macro. In theory, that would be quick.

I hope I am able to adequately describe what I want to do!
Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and people used film in their cameras, here is how I used to mark my clients' photos for cropping:
1. A photo proof would be on the table.
2. I would put a cardboard device over the photo.
3. With the device I could make a rectangular window of various standard frame sizes, like 8x10 or 5x7.
4. I would put the "window" over the photo wherever it was most pleasing, and then, with a pen, mark the outline of the area to be kept.
5. The photolab would then crop the photos accordingly.
6. The photos could then be printed to fit perfectly into frames.
Whew! Does that make sense?
Now: How do I do the equivalent in Photoshop?
I do NOT want to simply "resize" the photo. I want to CROP WITH THE FINAL SIZE IN MIND.
It seems like you could do this with the crop tool, but I can't figure out how.

I am trying to create pre-determined sized round graphics for a project that wil be printed out as a sheet & cut for use.
I can get the images to the circle shape, no problem...but the issue is determining the correct size of the circles to be cut. Let's say that I need them to be exactly 1.25", 1"...etc.
Is there a way to create a template sheet of such sizes, then apply the images to be cropped to those pre-determined sizes?
Unfortunately I do not have Illustrator, but I suppose I could open the images in CorelDraw to accomplish this. Haven't tried it yet.
Just wondering if there is a way to do this in Photoshop!

My designer wants a retainer of $3,000 but I can do most of my own stuff in Photoshop. Sometimes I get stumped though, and just need a 30 second tutorial. So I am coming here.Â
Â
how to change it from a square image to one with a rounded top and bottom-right corner.  Also a 2 pixel shadow going up the right side and along the bottom. I can manually draw in those two pixels easily enough. But the corners look terrible when I try to manually do it.
Â
I have been cropping the new image to the proper size, and then drawing in the two pixel fade on the side and bottom. Then trying to pixel by pixel create the rounded edges.
Â
Before you say "Its a drop shadow!" please remember, in order for me to copy that exact drop shadow, I would need to know all their settings, colors, pixel widths, etc. All I have is a flat, finished image, so I have none of that information. Plus, I don't know how to do a drop shadow on a curved corner, which deletes the original squared corner on the image.Â

Suppose I have a 300px x 300px image and I need to choose a part of that image to crop to 150px x 150px without resampling. (I need that hypothetical 150px x 150px so it fits a pre-defined area in a web page layout.)
I know I can take the crop tool to the image and view the "Info" tab to get my 150px x 150px. But that requires a fine touch and some trial and error to get the exact crop I want.
Is there a way to specify a particular size to crop or select and then move that selection around in the image to find the best crop? (Photoshop 7.0)

I am making a list of thumbs in Photoshop that I want to all be the same width and height. What is the fastest and best way to accomplish this when the images are all slightly different sizes?
I've already chosen one of the images that has the perfect dimensions for the page. I'm confused though about how to crop the other images to match those dimensions. I am using CS2.

Is there a way to view the preview size of an image while cropping, meaning while the marching ants are around the selection, can I see the image size?
2nd Question:
Can I preset a cropped size and drag it around until I find the area I want to select to crop?
I do have rulers showing and use them as guides, but this is not detailed enough, at this point.

i am finding that i sometimes have a need to crop a couple of images from something like an architectural line drawing. this means that i have lines in this drawing and i am oftentimes in need - for instance if i have copied two floor plan with one above the other - of having these images sit in a frame that is the SAME SIZE.
Â
i am also in the need of cropping so that the resulting images are ALIGNED - with for instance one line in one image at the same spot at the bottom and to the left with the same amount of bleed area around the image both at this point and at all other points.
Â
is there a way to crop an image in two different spots at the SAME SIZE?
is there a way to crop a "sloppy" copy of two sets of images so that the canvas is the same size but the resulting set of images are aligned in the manner described above?
Â
ALSO, is there some way for me to SCALE a set of images in Photoshop?

I am using Photoshop CS5 with all current updates installed on a Mac running Lion. I am having a problem with the handling of the camera raw format (specifically .arw) and how Photoshop handles the format.
Â
My first issue is that upon loading the format into Photoshop, the program is cropping a bit of the image from both the left and the right. I have not found a way to stop this from happening.Â
Â
Another issue is file size. A client is having issue with the file size presented. They are providing me an ARW file that is 14.8 MB and I am making edits and provided them with a large jpg from photoshop (jpg qaulity turned all the way up) and they are getting a jpg at 9.7 MB. They are concerned that I am giving them a less than quality result.
I know that any conversion from a camera raw format to a high resolution jpg will result in a lower file size and that has been explained however the client has taken the raw format parsed it through Mac Preview, saved it, and resulted in a larger file size than I could provide in Photoshop.Â
Â
This then becomes a confusing situation to handle.
Â
Questions:
a) How to explain the lower file size happening in Photoshop to the client (what is lost?)
b) Why they can use mac preview and get a larger file size that I can at full resolution jpg in Photoshop?
c) Is there a way I can make this client happy without moving to a tif file format?
d. Why is Photoshop cropping the .arw file?

After cropping a photo in cs4 i have tried hitting the return key as well as edit/crop and then my photo disappears and the image box reduces in size to about 1 inch square with no image. I have expanded the image box but nil photo. This has never happened before.
I reloaded cs4 onto my computer but the problem still exists. I have also tried out opening the file from Bridge as well as Photoshop with the same result.

With the project settings at 16:9 it is possible to insert photos of a different ratio and the customize pan and zoom will allow them to the cropped to 16:9.
I thought I had done the same thing with 4:3 video clips in a 16:9 project by using Video Pan & Zoom in the filters [and I tried the other crop filter as well], but maybe not, as when I tried to do this with a 1280x1040 AVI clip from a time lapse camera the only cropping box it would offer was in the same ratio as the clip. I also tried it with the same clip converted to mpeg, with the same result.
crop a video clip to 16:9 in a 16:9 project in VS14?

I have a timeline that is 16:9 and I'd like to crop it to 2:33.1. So going from 2048 x 1152 to 2048 x 878. How can I do this and maintain my edits and it let me pan and scan each clip so I have the best frame?
I can apply a resize in the timeline but this doesn't change the resolution of the timeline itself so I'm left with a letterbox in a 16:9 frame.
What am I missing to this simple process?

I thought that I would take a shot at a possible reason why cropping with the paper size dialog would give different results which appear to be random.Â
1. The dialog opens with the programmer assuming the user will make the paper size larger than the image. He takes the difference between the paper size’s lower right corner and the image’s lower right corner and subtracts the two. That’s a positive number since the paper size is larger than the image. It’s added to all pixel positions in the image which brings the image to the lower right corner of the paper.
2. Now consider what will happen if the paper size is smaller than the image.
Scenario 1: The user picks paper size before position. The difference between the lower right corners is now a negative number. Using negative numbers to reorder the image pixels will incorrectly display the upper right corner of the image in the canvas.
Scenario 2. The user picks position before paper size. The lower right corners of the image and paper are set equal. Reducing the paper size now leaves the lower right corner of the image to be displayed.
Â
Thus the display of the corner of the image appears to be random. However, it’s following the orders given by the user. Without doubt, there are other possible scenarios for this behavior.

I did most of the work in ilustrator, however, I now need to add and work with photos for this publication, and to my horror, photoshop will not allow me to open the AI file without cropping or scaling it first.

The difference in document size between PS6 and Bridge 6. After the final editing, the picture (PSD) size will be say 85 MB in PS6. However, viewing the same picture in Bridge, or Windows Explorer, the size will be 150 MB.
Â
I should also mention that the pictures were passed through LR4, then on to PS.

I was designing a membership card for a company and set a resolution of 300 and I can't remember what document size I set originally.
Anyway, my sizes now are as follows:
Pixel Dimensions: W 700, H 410
Document Size: 5.93cm X 3.47cm
Resolution: 300 pixels/inch
When I save my psd as any image type, my image is MUCH bigger than 5.93 x 3.47. How can I save it so that it is the size I want, but still the good image quality (resolution) and so I get the same size when I print it.

I’m designing a DVD case cover. I’m printing it with my home printer, when I’m measuring it on the paper it larger than it specified in Photoshop. I have tried to check and uncheck the “Scale to Fit Image” but its still not accurate.
My image is : 297x210
Res : 300ppi
Why the measurement on the paper and the document size in Photoshop are not the same?

I'm looking for a way to resize all the layers in my document to a specific size. I'd like to resize every layer to be exactly 6 inches in height (while keeping proportions constrained). I can manually transform every layer to do this but I haven't found a way to do this automatically to all layers, I've tried to do it as an action but it's recording it as a percentage and not a fixed height, so it doesn't work on the other layers that aren't the exact same size.Â

I'm working on a large tradeshow booth design. It was suggested that if my computer can handle it, to work at scale (120 " X 90") at 150dpi. So I am.
I am nearly finished designing and now Photoshop 7 is giving me an error:
"Cannot save file...the document size exceeds 2G." Or words to that effect.
The document window tells me that the file is 970 MB, less than a Gig.
I've purged all hidden layers to reduce the overall files size. No go.
I removed the last image I had in the design, which used outer glow effect, and now the file will save.
