Paint Shop Pro :: X5 Transparency / Mask

i am having a problem with the mask automatically deleting and making transparent the image when I load up a TGA. Simply deleting the mask doesn't bring back the parts of the image that are become transparent, the mask is deleting everything it touches upon loading of the image. Is this a setting somewhere I accidentally turned on? or a bug? PSP didn't used to do this when I first installed it. I have reset all the preferences, uninstalled/ reinstalled, but no fix.

I have paint Shop Pro X but for the files I am working on I have to use PSP 9 on XP (SP1). Trust me, after weeks writing back and forth to Corel and them testing our files it is the only way to open them. Our images are converted to .fpx using TrueSpectra which is now a relic from the past. PSP never had a problem with the .fpx files until XP service pack 2 was released and it then stopped opening them.
We have over 200,000 web images that are currently saved as fpx files (archaic I know and many of you won't have even heard of them let alone used them) that we are converting to a more adaptable and flexible pTIFF format (Pyramid TIFF). The pTIFF will allow us to include a path that can be used by Scene7 for various web functionality (movable transparent images).
, the real problem... What I am finding is that when I open some of the fpx files in Paint Shop Pro the products that are normally shown on white backgrounds are showing on black. It turns out that someone has managed to include transparency in the fpx file. I am unable to find a path, a channel mask or layers in the fpx file when opened in Paint Shop Pro. So how is what I always thought to be a flat image creating the selection that is filling with black?. Obviously, when the conversion to TIFF takes place it's rendering the image on a black background which is a problem.
I have tried un-checking "Render Transparency" under File format preferences (PostScript tab) but it made no difference.
If nothing else, is there was a way to make the black background fill in white instead. That would be fine.

Paint Shop Pro X4 14.2.0.1 Vista 64. Suddenly I cannot erase parts of the background image and create the checkerboard pattern. The erased area becomes white regardless of pallette color settings. Just to make sure I wasn't losing my mind I tried the same thing in my old PSP 7 and the checkerboard pattern does appear when erasing parts of the background image. I have reinstalled the program with the same results.
Solved: Recently recalibrated my monitor. The default color of the checkerboard was so light that it appeard white!! Chose dark gray and all is well.

Any way to simply remove a color by replacing it with a transparency? More specifically, the background of my image is solid black but the object itself is a little too intricate to cut out via the selection tool.

I have a problem receiving or downloading png files. Once downloaded to my computer they always show a white background. Where I might look to see if I screwed up a setting somewhere? If i right click to copy and paste a png file into psp pro x4 itself it has a black background .. if i right click save as ... then save as the png file it has a white background. If a friend takes that same file and saves it as a psd file it opens perfectly with the transparent background.

In PSP 8 I made a circular white clock face with black numerals on green background. I then saved it as a PNG, specifying the green as the transparent colour and specifying alpha channel.
It worked OK when viewed in my video editor, i.e. the green was transparent. But on opening it in PSP 8 I expected to see it displayed with the familiar chequer board background, yet it was a solid white.
So among many other PNGs it's impossible to tell that it does have a transparent area. Is this also the case in less ancient versions? What about other image editors - do they all have this weakness?

When saving using PNG optimizer I can obtain transparency selecting a single color (image attached), what is handy, but implies to save the image! When handling images in files as PSPImage, PNG, GIFF, is there any way of obtaining transparency besides using PNG optimizer? I mean, I would like to obtain transparency any moment, without being need to save the image...

1. An adjustment layer.
2. A luminosity mask for that adjustment layer.

Wanted: I want to edit that adjustment layer's mask in the editing area, viewing the mask as a black and white image.
Current procedure:
1. Create a new raster layer.
2. Change the Foreground Material to black.
3. Select the Fill tool.
4. Fill that new raster layer with black.
5. Move that black raster layer below the adjustment layer.
6. Select the adjustment layer.
7. Open the Properties of the adjustment layer.
8. Change the overlay colour to white.
9. Change the overlay opacity to 100%.
10. Select "Highlight Mask Area" in the Layers palette.
Questions:
1. Is there an easier way to do this?
2. If not, I've recorded a script that starts with the adjustment layer selected, but the script fails when attempting to move the new raster layer below the adjustment layer.

I bought PSP about a year or so ago, but grew frustrated with it and reverted back to Gimp. Now, however, I think I am ready to jump back.. and I encountered originally back then.
Basically, in some of the adjustment layers (Local Tone Mapping, Fill Light & Clarity) the mask doesn't work. When I click on the mask control the mask color in the dialog switches from white to black, but the screen doesn't revert back to underlying layer.This is very repeatable. It only happens in some AL, others like Layers and Curves work reliably.
I am on W7 x 64, PSP X4 v 14.2.01

I have an image, whose outline is well defined, which I am preparing for laser cutting/engraving. I am trying to find a quick and easy way of creating a cutting path around the edges of the image. Tracing in Corel Draw is not good enough. PhotoPaint will convert the mask to a path but it is not well defined. I can easily create an accurate mask with Paint Shop Pro, and even fill it with black colour, but that is as far as I can get. I have tried pasting as a new image but there is an undeleteable and unmoveable layer created which stops the image being visible. Instead of crisp black image I just get a blank white square.

I think I've found a major issue with saving .PNG files that have partial transparency in PSPx4
Essentially any opacity isn't saved correctly, and is made far too transparent. So anything with partial transparency is saved incorrectly.
I first noticed this when I saved a file to PNG that had a drop shadow - and the shadow seemed to have not been saved. In fact it had but the transparency was now so much higher it was almost invisible. Looking closer, all partially transparent pixels are not saved correctly.
This issue isn't present on x2 and PSP 9 (two old versions I've got).
I've done a simple test. Create a new image, transparent background. Fill with a colour at 30% opacity. Save as PNG, save as PSPImage. Resulting PNG looks completely different to the PSP image.
See the below screenshot, and also the but saved as PNG in PSP 9 (to show this is fine).
I'm always saving to PNG and this makes PSPx4 useless to me I'm afraid. I've checked the save settings and it's the same as PSP9.

While creating various circular masks with a radial gradient from white to black, whenever I change the blending mode of the mask path Ai will throw me out of mask mode into layer editing mode. Since this is on a large document of ~2Gb file with multiple artbords for large poster & UI refresh speed is slow, this has become quite frustrating. Is this normal Ai behaviour?

I'm using X5 and trying to save a PNG with a transparency mask. Everytime I save or export, I get the white box around it. I read a few posts that talk about a "masked" option check box, but that is not on my PNG save dialog box.

pictures of my car and adding effects and making my pictures really look good. I am in the process of making a new background for my computer i used a layer mask and set the background image to transparent.. I have the regular picture of my car as layer 1.. now when i use the gradient tool to show the transparency behind it works fine.. i save it as a PNG file and everything but when I go to set it as my background, the BLACK background doesn't fade into the picture.. the surrounding area where the transparent layer was showing through is always WHITE.
how can i make the black fade in? i know i can just make the background of the picture black instead of transparent but i want to be able to post these on the internet and give them to my parents so they can do the same.. so i dont want to make everyone have a black background to make it look right, which is why i want transparent.

What I want to do is create a sort of “transparency layer mask”, meaning that this layer will go on top of all my existing layers and will make an area transparent according to the mask. Kind of drilling a hole to transparency through all the layers underneath. I see that you can do similar things with adjustment layers but I couldn’t make one for transparency. Even better would be to be able to specify which underneath layers this layer will affect.

I need to make an object or group transparent towards its borders.
In particular, I drew a red heart and gave it a yellow contour with 20 steps, imitating a gradient. So the heart looks like it has a gradient (from red to yellow) towards its border.Â
Now I need this heart to also be transparent towards the border. The transparency should begin somewhere in the red part and slowly mask everything and it should end just before the outer border, which should be completely transparent.
The radial transparency tool does not produce good results, because the heart borders are not uniformly transparent. I need a mask exactly of the heart shape.
how to do it inside CorelDRAW?

Alright, so I'm about to rip my hair out. I'm a Photoshop guy who occasionally vectorizes stuff into Illustrator CS4 by exporting work paths. Usually it works fine, but it's been a few years since I've done this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to apply an opacity mask to an area of a layer so that it is transparent through all objects of the layer down to the background.

Basically, I created an image with text in Photoshop. I exported work paths to illustrator and colored/filled in all the objects. I need to cut out certain parts of the image so that they're transparent through to the background so that when the image is printed up on a shirt, fabric shows through rather than ink. This sounds like a stupid question, and it probably is, but I just can't get it to work.

I've gone through all the steps of creating an opacity mask, but every time I make the object transparent, I just get a white fill from an underlying object. It will not cut through to the transparent background. I need to get this object to cut through all layers.

I'm in the process of drawing a site plan which contains buildings, roads and wooded areas. I want to draw roads which go through the wooded areas. I want both the road and the woods to be opaque except where the woods overlaps the road (I want the wood to be partially transparent at the overlap). Example of the effect I want is shown below. I don't get this effect when trying to use blending transparency modes. I'm sure it can be done with the opacity mask but I've tried all sorts of combinations and not managed to get this effect.

Just came upon an error I had not seen before. Though PSP no longer supports Animation Shop, up until PSP X4, the user has been able to export frames back to PSP from Animation Shop. Now, this no longer works! There's still some communication there, because an error message - which, incidentally, makes absolutely no sense at all - is generated in PSP X4:

I installed PSP X4 today on a new PC with Windows 7 and noticed that it has no Animation Shop. Can I install Animation Shop to this machine? Will it work without PSP 9 or does it need certain dlls from PSP 9 ? I really want to be able to use Animation Shop again.

I'm trying to paint something to be transparent. I've got a blue background layer, and a drawing on the layer above. There's a region of red around the drawing and a region of black within the drawing, both on the upper layer, and I'd like to make these regions transparent such that you could see the blue background through them. I'm trying to paint these region setting the opacity to 1%, but all this seems to do is paint a transparent color (i.e. no color at all) over top the red and black regions such that they don't seem to dissappear. How do I get the transparent color to replace the red and black regions instead of going over top them (essentially being useless)?

I just got 3.5.8 today and tried to save a PNG with transparency. It removed the transparency. I tested it with just load an image, save as..., ok. Reload -- no transparency.
I tried to reload 3.5.7, but it just gave me 3.5.8. Is there a place to download 3.5.7? I don't remember this problem earlier.
