I scanned a old portrait (1920's - 30's) that somewhere along the line someone tried to "clean" and brought up some of the image. Is there a way in Paintshop Pro X5 to repair the digital image, and if so, how do I do it?

I am trying to repair an old image which is about 40-yrs-old (please see below). The original image that was scanned in was a lot more uniform grey, but I have managed to add a little more contrast.

However, much still needs to be done. I was going to attempt to remove the stain on the right using the clone tool, but my main concern is to replace the sky. This would add some clouds, a little contrast, and remove the scratch at the top of the photo.

However, when I try to remove this old, dull sky using Photoshop Elements's magic wand based on this tutorial

I find that the wand also removes the head and body of the duck due, no doubt, to the similarity of grey tones.

How to replace this dull sky with a more interesting one, but I am not sure how to do so while keeping my duck. In fact, I would like to emphasise the presence of the duck more. Should I use a mask technique (I am not very good at masks, I am afraid) to mask the duck from the changes that a new sky will bring about?
In X2 all I had to do was go to file- either 'twain acquire' or -'from scanner' and my scanner software would open in X2 and i could directly import the scan.
In X3 all the acquire choices are grayed out unless I first choose, file- new, and then a dialogue box for size options opens.Once I have a new (empty) file on the editor screen I can then acquire . Is this a new change in X3 ?
I was working on a very HI-res image when Paint Shop Pro X4 just quit. It just went away, no errors, nothing.
I can rescan the image, but it was a very large image and took lots of disk space.
Is this scanned in image still on my hard drive? If it is where do I find it, so I can delete it?
I have PaintShop Pro X3 and pretty much all the other programs. I scanned lots of photos (6*4) at a 300 dpi which works out at about 11 meg each photo (i think this was overkill!). However, when i created a slideshow these photos are shown as about one quarter sized. Is there any way i can correct this ? Should i for the future scan at a different dpi ? I want to view the images as a slideshow and am not interested in printing them.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded a Trial Version of PSP X5, and one of Adobe PSE11. For my purposes, I find PSP easier to use and therefore preferable. However, in PSE11, a scan of several photos contained in a single file can be "auto" split or divided into individual files, and as such can be edited individually. Try as I have, I have found nothing similar in PSP X5. This could be a deal breaker, as I have numerous old photos to scan and edit, and I find that doing 3 to 5 at a time is a big time saver. Does PSP 5 has this feature?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI scanned a document into PSP X5 and I am trying to use the materials palette to highlight (in red) certain spots on the document. The palette defaults to grey shades only. I reset the workspace to factory defaults and even tried the SHIFT-START - without luck. However, if I open any color images, the palette shows full color options. if this is a problem with how I scanned the document into PSP X5?

When I scan it the scanned image has thin white vertical stripes through all the dark areas of the photo. I have located a method of removing them using Photoshop (using layers etc) but cannot duplicate those 'instructions' using PSP X2.
how I can remove these thin stripes (they make the photo look like everyone one is wearing pin striped clothing).
When i change from portrait too landscape the drawing still prints in portrait. What can i do too solve this?

I was thinking of trying to transform a photo into a cartoon style ink drawing (i.e. outline only) but can quite get it (I have tried one or two plugins and the ink/ pencil tools).

I want to remove the portrait images on this header and replace it with a new portrait but still want to have the "halo" (??) effect of the lighter blue surrounding the new portrait.
As you can see from the attached header image, the "halo" effect follows the shape of the woman's head....I want to be able to recreate the same look. How do I do that?

I want to be able to resize portrait images so they fit in a slideshow (same height) with landscape images. I believe the way to do this is to add padding to the portrait images. That's what I understand from this article. It's the plugin that I want to use on my website.

I guess I'm also having a hard time figuring out how to resize my portrait and landscape images to get them close to the same size, which seems to be another option according to the article.
I know large images first need to be resized for page loading speed. Normally, I resize from 4608x3072 to 1200x800. (Portrait 3072x4608 will resize to 800x1200). But, then do I resize again or crop?

I'm open for the simplest way for me to do this and remember the reasoning and methodology. I'm working on a work-related website, but I also want to build a separate personal website for my photography.
What is the best way to take the background out of a photo or a portrait and keep the photo? Also would like to be able to keep the edge nice so when am laser engraving it will look nice, and will be able to engrave well.

edit the text of a scanned card and I want the logos as well. I don't want to remove the logos that are on the current card and neither don't want to miss the background of the card.
I've got lots of pages of B&W scanned images that are not quite centered. My usual method for centering them would be:
1. Open image.
2. Ctrl + Shift + N to create a new layer.
3. Select the Paint Bucket tool and fill the new layer with white.
4. Move the new layer down using the arrow button on the Layers window.
5. Select the top layer again by clicking on the Layers window.
6. Select the Move Pixels tool and drag the image until it visually looks centered.
7. Ctrl + M to merge layers down.
8. Save.
Is there any smarter, faster, fewer clicks way of accomplishing this? Is there any way of programming this so I don't have to visually center each page?(Also, I usually have to close and reopen paint.net after about 10 pages because the program isn't freeing all memory when files are closed.)
In any case, I have a drawing I did with a pencil, and then I scanned it. Now, I want to scan it, and then paint over it. I have figured out how to paint over the scan, but I am not producing the result I want.
I have attached my scanned image, and the painting. My issue is, I want to have a digital feel to my painting; that is, I want to get rid of the penciling. I am wondering how to accomplish this. I am hoping that I won't have to manually ink the picture.

View 6 Replies View Related4705.sample2.tifOur customers have given us some black and white .tif Monochrome Bitmap images at 400 ppi (see attached sample) and 600 ppi of some scanned black and white engineering drawings. Some of the small text on the drawings is not very legible because open areas are filled in with black. Some of the vertical and horizontal lines are ragged (digitized) on the edges. Is there any way that I can improve the visual quality of these Monochrome Bitmap images in Corel Draw (which I use) or Corel Paint (of which I'm not very knowledgeable, or adept)?

Also, the paper I scanned was far removed from the original, so the white blank areas are full of black artifacts. Is there some way to have Paint.net recognize the actual test so I can have a clean text copy?
Just came upon an error I had not seen before. Though PSP no longer supports Animation Shop, up until PSP X4, the user has been able to export frames back to PSP from Animation Shop. Now, this no longer works! There's still some communication there, because an error message - which, incidentally, makes absolutely no sense at all - is generated in PSP X4:

I have a 4x5 color negative that I accidentally double exposed. The image I want to salvage was double exposed with a relatively simple exposure of a sky and sea horizon so the information I want to remove is relatively smooth and not terribly complex.

Some parts of the image are incomplete/Gone. One example would be a person's face. The picture was torn in half across this person's face. The tear goes horizontally across the nose. At the tear, some of the image is gone and it is just white paper. I have had a great deal of success rebuilding this face but I have several others that are of the same condition. Code:
I'm working on a job that requires recreating vintage box artwork. This involves recomposing scanned images into a new layout, recreating text from matched fonts - that sort of thing. Unfortunately, some of the scanned images (originally printed offset press in cmyk) were printed with one or more of the plates out of register, creating a halo effect on one side. Can this be corrected in PhotoPaint? Is there a way to create each channel as an object which could be moved to realign the colors and then flattened again?
