Paint Shop Pro :: Original EXIF Information Reduced After Saving

Mar 10, 2012

I use Paintshop Pro Photo XI. When opening my unedited picture in Irfanview I can read a long list of information under "EXIF", but as soon when I open the photo in Paintshop and save it a great part of the original EXIF information is "gone" and replaced by a very brief survey, including Paintshop information.

What can I do to preserve the original EXIF information?

Paint Shop Pro :: Save Options / Saving EXIF

It seems I can either save work at a lower quality jpeg, or export to get higher quality and lose the EXIF. I never want to use the lower quality, never, but I cannot seem to find anything in the Preferences to avoid having to manually set the quality. Is there a way to save at a higher quality than currently provided by PSP X4 by default?

When I bring up n image file from a folder and after I work on it I would like to save in another folder other than from the original download file which is the only choice I seem to get.

Is there way to designate a "default" folder for saving other than having to continually search for the folder I wish to save to?

Paint Shop Pro :: EXIF Data Not Available To Plug-ins

Sep 1, 2013

I am the author of PTLens, software for correcting lens distortion.

[URL]

The software functions by reading EXIF data and, based on this information, determines the camera, lens, and focal length, and automatically corrects lens distortion.

The plug-in is compatible with Photoshop on both the Mac and PC. Unfortunately, EXIF data is not available for plug-ins under PSP. Without EXIF data the user must manually enter camera make, model, lens, and lens focal length. This is a bit onerous for users with zoom lenses.

Work at your end, assuming you have access to a pointer to EXIF data, is trivial. I estimate less than one hour of developer time. As a result, users will have access to automatic correction for distortion via the PTLens plug-in.

I am willing to work with a developer on your end to see this feature implemented in your software.

Technical information follows.
.
intptr_t simpProp;
Handle compProp;
int32 rc;

[Code]....

A call to getProperty returns zero, indicating all is okay. But a call to getSize returns zero, indicating no EXIF data. I tried a different approach. A PSP script, to obtain EXIF data, was successful. But there is no way to pass this information to a plug-in.

Setting an environment variable in the script, and reading the variable in the plug-in, won't work because I need to set an environment variable in a parent process. This is not permitted.

Writing a file from the script, and then reading it back in the plug-in, doesn't work because the script is running in a protected environment where writing files is not allowed.

Paint Shop Pro :: EXIF White Balance Data?

Dec 9, 2012

I use a Pentax K-r and the white balance icon above the EXIF data panel only shows if I have used Auto White Balance. If I have used any of the other modes available in the camera, no icon is shown and the EXIF data lists the shot as taken with manual white balance. The other two icons (metering mode and JPG/DNG) work correctly. The white balance issue means that I have to note the white balance setting of each shot while the card is in the camera and put it by hand against the shot in PaintShop Pro. This is very time-consuming and seems to be a serious omission.

I have since found that the white balance icon works with my Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-150 camera, although the EXIF data still shows the shots as taken with manual white balance, so it seems to be a compatibility problem that needs to be resolved.

Lightroom :: Export Original Photos In Low Quality (reduced Size From 12MB To 600KB)

Aug 20, 2013

I accidentally exported original photos in low quality (reduced size from 12MB to 600KB), as I needed to quickly (herein lays my mistake) upload them to a proofing site which requires me to reduce the quality of the images significantly.  I NEVER usually do anything without backing things up, or before making a copy etc. This time however, I was in a BIG rush to get these to a client and I not only exported the original files (even though I exported to a new folder, somehow, the originals got reduced as well without me noticing), but I also deleted them from my memory card (I tried card recovery software and no luck).  What I'm left with now is a folder full of low quality, useless images and no (known) way of restoring them to the original high quality (12MB) state. Here are some other details:

Program: Lightroom 2
Computer: MacBook Pro
Camera: Nikon D7100

(I only post this as I used my camera to delete the images off the memory cards...not sure if there is a way to recover via camera?)

Images no longer show in preview (yes, I deleted them from there too!)I did not back-up I tried scanning my hard-drive, memory card and external drive with recovery software (no luck)the images were on 2 memory cards and, as mentioned, I deleted them using my camera (when I ran the recovery software, only images that I originally deleted via my computer came up - which were the "did not make the cut" photos from the shoot that I deleted in Bridge - the rest of the photos, which are the ones I need, are not coming up in the scan)These images were to be used as posters, so high quality is crucial. There is nothing in my trash can eitherI tried using a preview extraction plug-in, but as there are no previews (duh Sanja), the plug in proved useless  I think that's all the info I can provide (maybe it's too much info as is)...

Lightroom :: Edit EXIF Data - Lens Information?

May 8, 2011

I have a number of unchipped manual focus lenses (Zeiss and Nikon). As a result, no lens information is recorded in the EXIF/Metadata file. How am I able to update this information? What applications are available to use if not by Adobe. Note: I do use LR3 and PS CS5.

Currently under the library table and Metadata filter these unchipped lenses read "0.0mm f/0.0". Note I do use the set up in my camera menu to notify the camera's focal length. So when I move the cursor over the photo is will indicate the focal length. Its just this information can't be used as a filter or for search.

As far as I know, Exif-information holds all necessary information on the lens. The Nikon Lens ID value 'FE 48 37 5C 24 24 DF 0E' uniquely refers to that lens.

Photoshop :: Does PS Change Exif Of Original File

Mar 7, 2009

I participate in an online photography challenge group. In order for your photo to be legal you have to be able to submit the original file, with unaltered exif, as proof that the photo was taken during the right dates, and that the editing steps you took were legal.

I have never had an issue, however there is now some debate amongst a few people.

A certain photog claims that she shot a photo in jpg, used PS (it might have been elements though) to edit the photo, then used "save as" to save it as a different file name. When she had to submit the original file, the exif was changed and she was dq'd. She is blaming PS for changing the original file even though she never saved over the original.

My own stance is that she must hae used the "import photos" command to get the pics from her camera to her HD, and that is likely what changed the exif on the original. (I always use a copy and paste into a new folder on my HD)

So my question is... who is correct? Does PS Or PS Elements change your original file just by opening it, even if you do not ever "save", and only use "save as"? Or am I correct in saying the only way that could happen is during an "import from camera" command?

Please let me know so we can put this issue to rest. It is causing the whole jpg vs raw thing to flare up again, since you cannot save to a camera propriatary raw file.

Paint Shop Pro :: Saving As PSD Only Allows 24 Bit Depth

Apr 8, 2012

I've recently been looking for a cost effective image editor to use alongside Lightroom and have been considering PantShop Pro X4. I downloaded the trial version and it looks like it will provide most the functionality I have been looking for ie. layers support in 16 bit/channel. It also integrates quite nicely with Lightroom allowing the transfer of a image using .psd format retaining the 16 bit/channel during transfer and subsequent editing. Unfortunately when attempting to save back in .psd format it presents the message;

"Because of the requirements of the specified file format, the saved file will have a bit depth of 24 (16.7 million colors). Would you like to continue?"

As far as I am aware .psd doesn't inherently have this limitation so is this a licensing limitation, a coding limitation in PaintShop Pro X4, a bug or a lack of knowledge on my part and there is a way to do this? I like that the edited image could of course be exported as a PSPIMAGE file to retain the option of re-editing or as a tif file to allow importing back into Lightroom but if it exported the full bit depth to .psd it would nicely allow the full cycle out of and back into lightroom fairly seamlessly keeping the least amount of extra files.

Paint Shop Pro :: RAW (DNG) Photo - Edits Are Gone After Saving

Apr 28, 2012

New to this forum and PSP (X4 Ultimate). Working on a raw file (dng) in the Edit tab, I make changes then save to a jpg in another folder. The next day I want to undo some of the changes so I edit the dng raw file again but all my previous changes are no longer available. Am I doing something wrong? Or are my previous changes just no longer available in the raw file? Doesn't PSP keep track of changes made to raw files so you can continue to evolve the image? As I said, I am new at PSP so I hope I'm just doing something wrong. I have used Lightroom for a while now but I really like what PSP can do and the speed to make changes , especially to portraits.
