Lightroom :: Moving Large Files Full Of Subfolders And Images From One Drive To Another?

Aug 28, 2013

My catalog in Lightroom 4 is spread over several hard drives and broken into years, with subfolders holding each seperate shoot.  I recently replaced the harddrive that only held 2009 with a 3TB drive that should be able to accomodate 2010,2011 and 2012.  I would like to move those files onto that drive within Lightroom so that it tracks where they are.

Lightroom :: Cache Large RAW Files Imported From Network Drive On Local Drive?

Jul 5, 2012

I'm copying RAW files from a shoot onto my network RAID drive in a per-album folder, from where I then import into a new LR catalog (I'm using LR 4.1) on my Windows laptop for that album.

I'm finding that editing RAW files on a network drive from a wireless laptop is awfully slow (not to mention not being able to continue the work offline somewhere else), so I'd like to cache those files on my speedy SSD drive just until I'm done editing and exporting/publishing that album.

I back up my per-album catalog onto the network folder alongside the RAW files since that's my IT-managed master repository. When I'm done editing, I'd purge the cached files and just keep the catalog previews on my limited capacity SSD.

So, is there a way to tell LR to, for one/all files imported from a location (in my case a network folder), look in an alternate location for the identical files? Since I create per-album catalogs in per-album folders, there wouldn't be filename clashing. Either LR can provide this caching behavior on its own or I'd manually copy files from the network folder to a local folder and tell LR to look there first.

I don't really want to make copies of files into secondary folders within LR since then it's a hassle to merge edits on the cached copy to its master copy (I haven't done this, but I'd imagine so).

Lightroom :: Moving Files From C Drive To External Drive?

How does moving files off my C drive affect Lightroom's ability to find them?  I have flagged and labeled files - will they still be flagged and labeled?  Will I have to import them again?

Lightroom :: Moving A Large Set Of Files?

Jun 7, 2012

I'm planning on moving over to Lightroom soon. My problem is that my files are distributed over two machines (one windows, one mac), I want to put the files on an external hard drive and have only the catalogue on the mac (the harddisk of that machine is too small to hold all the files). So I thought I'd rebuild everything from scratch, let LR rename and copy all the files into a new folder structure, possibly even converting to DNG while doing so. Is that possible? Should I break this up into several steps? (I'm talking about around 40 thousand files)

(P.S.: I scanned the discussions first, but I didn't find anything relating this)

edit: As far as I understood a book on lightroom that I bought, it should work this way -- it's just that I'm not sure whether it's the best way...

Lightroom :: Lost Adjustments When Move Images From Hard Drive To External Drive

Mar 1, 2012

I moved images from my harddrive to an external drive.

I opened Lightroom.

Noticed there was a question mark by the photo folder I needed.

I synchronized the folders. Nada.

I rememebered I moved the images (first line ^^)

I re-imported the images from the external drive into Lightroom.

These images (other than one that was marked previously with a blue label) look completely untouched - completely original files - even though I spent hours working on them.

I am glad the images weren't deleted BUT re-doing 600 images will be a MAJOR FAIL if I can't figure out how to import the images with the settings / developments I did beforehand.

Lightroom :: Merge External Drive Images To Desktop Drive Within Same Master Catalog?

Aug 18, 2013

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.

I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited  images are not on my desktop.....

I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.

I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.

Lightroom :: 4.3 Says Drive Is Too Full When There Is 468GB Remaining

Jan 31, 2013

I just started working with LR, importing photographs from my Nikon D800 folders and storing them on an External USB 3.0 WD 3TB drive (I drive).

I'm using LR4.3 Dell Optiplex 990 Intel Core i7-2600 CPU W 3.4GHz 16.0GB RAM Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, Storage 2TB Hitachi (E drive), 468GB available...

I've told LR to use drive I and I confirm in both LR and in Windows Explorer that that is what it is doing.

When importing, why does LR4.3 continuously tell me I have to delete files on my 'E' drive to "make room" the drive before LR can continue? The importing is being done to the I drive.

Lightroom :: How To Import Files From Photo Collection In A Folder And Subfolders On Network Attached Storage (NAS) Unit

May 14, 2012

Have just installed Windows LR4 trial, told it to Import files from my photo collection in a folder + subfolders on a network attached storage (NAS) unit. Windows Explorer tells me that there are 10,308 files in 408 folders in the main folder, totalling 38.8gb but on scanning the folder prior to import LR4 tells me that there are only 9,612 photos.

My photo collection folder contains only photos and no other file types.

Why is there this discrepancy ? I've searched around to see whether there is some hidden filter that is excluding certain photo files but cannot find anything of that nature.

And, if I delete the original file, can Lightroom use the copies?

Lightroom :: Moving Catalogue To A Different Internal Drive?

Jul 13, 2013

I think this should be straightforward but want to make sure.  I use Windows 7 on a Dell Desktop with a 1.5 TB HD.  It's 30 Gigs from full which is one more shoot.  I have backups on external drives but would like to have all my photos both internal and external for safety sake.  I'm currently using lightroom 4.4.

When I install my second 2 TB HD I think all I would have to do is move My Pictures folder (with the lightroom catalog) to the new drive.  What will I have to do within the software to let the Program know where it is?

Lightroom :: Moving A Catalog To A Faster Drive?

Jul 11, 2012

I currently have my main catalog 'gwcat-2-2.lrcat'  in what I think is the default directory of ":..D:UsersGeorgePicturesLightroom".  I would like to move it to a faster drive.  Should I move JUST the lrcat file, or is moving the gwcat-2-2 Previews.lrdata required?

There is a LOT of stuff in lrdata! and would take a long time to move.  I've always been a bit confused by the difference between "Previews.lrdatafa" and the cache directory (I already have the cache directory on SSD).  --If you go by just the definition of terms, it seems like a distinction without a difference.

Lightroom :: Moving Pictures From Internal To External Drive?

May 27, 2013

I have lightroom 3.6 on a Mac running OS 10.6.  I am in the process of moving my picture library from the internal drive to an external drive because my internal drive is very full.  I plan to have the LR catalog remain on the internal drive as others have suggested LR will run faster if the catalog remains on the internal drive.

I initiated the move process within the LR library, by selecting all photos within about 150 folders inside a master "my photos" folder on the internal hard drive displayed in the library module of LR.  I then dragged them into the new "my photos" folder I created on the external drive which was displaying inside the LR library module.

First question, this moving process is progressing so slowly, at a rate of about one picture every second.  is this normal?

Second question: When I open the external drive by clicking on the drive itself, outside LR, it seems the pictures are flowing in without any of the original subfolder structure that was present on the internal drive. Is something wrong that I don't see the subfolders on the external drive?  I want to preserve this structure and of course see it show up in the LR library for the external drive.

Lightroom :: Moving Entire Catalog To Bigger External Drive?

Jun 29, 2013

A friend just had major problems moving his v3 files. He had one top folder for all Lightroom. He keeps his catalog and photos on an external and now needs to increase the capacity of the external. So he copied them over in Windows with the entire Lightroom folder remaining intact, and reassigned the old drive letter to the new external hard drive, so the path to all photos is preserved.

However, everyhting shows up Missing. "Find this folder" doesn't work. You navigate to the new location but it's not clear what exactly you "do" to relink. Clicking the name of the lost folder in the resulting dialog box (new-but-named-the-same-as-old-drive) didn't cange anthong back at the Library display of that folder. I know I -- myself -- will be moving to a new internal drive from the one currently storing my photos in the near future. So his problem is relavant to the hassle i can expect.

Lightroom :: Resizing Large Images

Jan 28, 2014

I'd like to resize a large batch of images to a more manageable size. I shoot a lot of weddings and find when shooting with my Nikon D800, the files are enormous when shooting Raw. Until now I would export all my vertical images first to a folder and then the horizontal ones and then resize in photoshop to say 11x17. Is there a way to resize ALL my images before I even bring them into photoshop? I'd like to resize them all (both vert and horizontal images) at  one time. If I select the batch of images I'd like to resize, and them click export, it takes me to a menu which gives me the option to resize. I just don't know what settings I should use? Can I just click width and height and punch in say 11x17 and leave it at 300dpi? I want to preserve the aulaity for print purposes but reduce the file size so it's manageable for both my client and me when I then go into Photoshop to edit.

In the past (but only once), I have used an online service that allowed me to zip a large amount of high-resolution images and upload them to their website in order to transfer them to another person (the other person would download the images at their convenience, within an allotted amount of time), while maintaining their full image quality.  I can't remember the name of this service, though.  I recall, that, in order to use it, I had to sign up for a free 14-day trial, so it is a paid service, although at the time, I only needed it once (or so I thought).
