Lightroom :: Using DNG Files For Backup?
Jan 4, 2014Is my image backup plan fundamentally flawed? My lightroom catalogue refers almost exclusively to RAW files, but for each file, once I've done the required edits, I "export as DNG" to make a backup which has the edits embeded in. I prefer to use RAW files as the main file but I save the backup as DNG just to save a bit of space)
However, if I replace a folder of RAW files myphoto1.CR2, myphoto2.CR2 with a folder of DNG the equivalents myphoto1.dng, myphoto2.dng then not surprisingly Lightroom shows the files are missing. (At this point all I'm doing is simulating a backup recovery). I can "find missing folder" easily enough and the ? disappears from the folder list, but the individual images in the library are still missing. Again this is not really surprising because although the file names are the same as those referenced in the library the extension is DNG rather than RAW.
Now the surprising part (for me anyway).....I can "find missing file" by pointing to the replacement DNG and it warns me that the file name is not the same (because the extension is different) and asks if I want to link them anyway. I say yes and once again the image file is linked to the image reference in the library. So far so good, BUT, despite ticking the box which is meant to link neighbouring files, only the one image is linked.
Clearly if I do face disaster and need to use my backup DNGs then I can't go individually linking each and every image. Is there a quicker way, or is my backup plan fundamentally flawed?

Aug 29, 2012I uninstalled Lightroom, because it was too slow on my computer. It put a lot of library files and directories in My pictures folder.
When I use a backup program (SyncbackSE) to backup my pictures, it starts to scan all the Lightroom library files and it takes forever (hours and counting). Even though Windows cannot find the directories (with hidden and system files shown). I want to completely delete the Lightroom directories, because now I can't backup my images anymore. It is a pain in the dark places.

Aug 26, 2012I have lost my primary copies of all my photos due to a hard drive crash. The only copies I have now are in the folder structure created upon import backup (photos imported on...). My catalog is stored on a third drive, and is uneffected with the exception of all the photos being missing.
How can I match up my catalog with the files that are now not in the folder structure of the origionals? I have 65,000 photos in the cagalog, and locating each folder is daunting.

Dec 26, 2012I have few terabytes of photo's that are cataloged in lightroom. Only a few hundred gig are photo's that I rated 3-5 stars and are the only ones that I would want to be 100% certain I don't loose in a perfect storm data loss scenario.
I currently use windows 7 import everything into one master folder for my catalog, then sort and rate them all. Is there any way to direct lightroom to separate all photo's with a 3-5 star rating on my actual hard drive into a separate folder or duplicate them into another folder for cloud back-up? I've tried showing the rating column in window, but it doesn't seem to bring my lightroom star ratings into windows.
Lightroom :: Files Couldn't Be Copied To Backup Location
Oct 16, 2013After importing into LR3, I get an error message that says: Some import operations were not performed. The following files could not be copied to the backup location.
Then there is a list of images (usually all of the photos imported). This didn't always happen and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. My LR catalog and backups are stored on an EHD.
I am currently saving all of my metadata to files (just to be sure) and backing up my catalog so I can upgrade to LR5 (already purchased) but want to be sure my catalog is good before I do that.I've tried everything I know - checking my backup location and drive in LR window match up.

Jan 27, 2013I bought a new computer and am trying to transfer my files from the old computer to the new one. I thought I had it done right, brought the photos into the new computer, and then started working away. I have now discovered, none of my .jpg photos brought over the changes made. For instance, if I go into the Develop mode, all controls are set to "0". I revisited the old computer, and they are not all set to "0" there. What have I done and how do I correct this? I'll never change computers again with Lightroom.

Lightroom :: DNG Files Did Not Transfer Properly Into New Computer?
Jan 10, 2014On December 19th, I just went to Mac from Windows. Bought a new computer (OS X) and transfered files from an external hard drive. I did not do the stardard catalog transfer and had many pictures I wanted to delete, so I transferred the old pictures through the "Another Catalog" feature import. So far so good. All worked very well for 2 years worth of pictures... while I was transferring CR2 files. Did not lose any images until I hit the following snag.
I was still on the old Windows pc on December 11th when I decided to start using DNG files and started using "Copy as DNG" option for import. On December 19th I received the new computer and started the transfer process.
The DNG files (Copy as DNG) which I started using on Dec 11th did not transfer, not one image. I lost all the information for these files. The actual DNG file is fine, but all the catalog information with all the adjustments do not transfer as the CR2 files did. At first I just got an error message when I transferred the images... saying error occured. I did not know why the transfer was not happening, and on further investigation I realized that the correct transfer stopped on Dec 11th. That is when I realized it must have been because of the DNG "new" file format. I decided to just transfer one image at a time to see exactly what would happen and Lightroom5 said "the original file is not available". I then realized that when I transferred the images from Dec 11 thru Dec 19th I COPIED them from the external drive as "Copy as DNG"... which means that I was trying to transfer and copy as DNG a file that was already copied as DNG. I made this error because I had just started using that feature and did not remember to switch to just "copy" for the transfer for those dates. Could this error have caused the non-transfer of the files for those dates?
Bottom line is that I have lost all the work for that one week which included a number of images.
When I open the old catalog I see the image information but a blank space for the missing images... right next to each image it is the DNG raw file..side by side. I cannot get the old catalog to recognize the individual catalog information for each image I worked on.
My question is... can anything be done to recover that information. Missing photographs is not the problem. It appears either my error of double copy of DNG format is the issue OR I had set the preferences incorrectly somewhere. I am aware that I could have embedded the RAW file information into the DNG file, but this was not checked off in the preference menu. Could there be any comparability issues between OS X and Windows? I do not think this is the problem but just putting it out there. My greatest fear is thinking I am using DNG incorrectly and will lose everything again in the future.
BTW, the original CR2 files are not avalable to me any more... computer hard drive was erased as it appeared all the information had backed up properly. And the backup files on the external hard drives are DNG format. So no CR2 files are available at all.

Following the steps to initiate tethered capture per Adobe, the camera is recognized, the camera settings are updated in LR when changed at the camera, and the LR shutter release functions properly. Only the files never transfer to LR. LR indicates that the "Files are Transferring from Camera" but they never do. Here's some additional information.

Lightroom 5.3 up to date.
D800 firmware up to date.
I've gone through all the steps on the Adobe troubleshooting page. I've tried this with a CF card installed and no card installed. This setup works perfectly with Image Capture on the Mac.

Oct 18, 2012As I have done for years I shoot in RAW and use Nikon transfer to load images from the card to my laptop and external drive. AFter I sort the images by subject I import them to Lightroom for the final touches. Not so with Lightroom 4.2 and Nikon D600..Adobe says if yousue transfer than 4.2 will not recognize the files and too bad ...as a company they are going downhill..I hope they correct the problem so I can import the 1500 images into Lightroom for final conversions.

Nov 11, 2013Is there a way to exclude "backup" files from search. Don't tell me to turn off backup! They have saved me on more than one occasion. When I search my Corel "Jobs" directory which has over 40,000 files it shows all the backup files too. How can I exclude those files? No, creating a seperate place just for these files is not a viable solution either as the backups are set to save within the same directory as the Corel file. If it were seperate it would be really hard to find as we often just call files "18 x 24 coro" but under the clients name. Can't have the backup saving over others with the same name.

Sep 8, 2013I have PSE11 on my old Windows XP computer. I have installed it also on my new Windows7 computer and hoped it would be easy to transfer the photos by backup/restore via an external hard drive.
When I try to restore a backup on to the new computer, no tly file is found. When I then look at that backup folder in Windows explorer the .tly file is absent. I tried again with an older backup, checking first that a tly file had was present, by looking on the old computer with Windows explorer. Looking with explorer on the new computer - no .tly file. Looking again with explorer on the old computer, the .tly file is gone!
I am completely mystified. I dont't want to keep trying as each successive backup is older. If the .tly files are gone, I assume the backup becomes useless.
