Lightroom :: Segregate 3+ Star Raw And XMP Files For Cloud Backup
Dec 26, 2012
I have few terabytes of photo's that are cataloged in lightroom. Only a few hundred gig are photo's that I rated 3-5 stars and are the only ones that I would want to be 100% certain I don't loose in a perfect storm data loss scenario.
I currently use windows 7 import everything into one master folder for my catalog, then sort and rate them all. Is there any way to direct lightroom to separate all photo's with a 3-5 star rating on my actual hard drive into a separate folder or duplicate them into another folder for cloud back-up? I've tried showing the rating column in window, but it doesn't seem to bring my lightroom star ratings into windows.
We have been testing some cloud services like dropbox and sugarsync. The great thing about them is that they store up to 5 (in dropbox 8) versions of every file, and to just have a duplicated file (different extension) and upload it every time doesn´t make any sence. So my question is, are bak files for autocad sitll necessary?
I always hated .bak files in my work folder, here at my office everybody always delete them as soon as they see one. I know its better to keep them but its really annoying to have duplicated files in the same folder ALWAYS, you can´t even hide them.
Is my image backup plan fundamentally flawed? My lightroom catalogue refers almost exclusively to RAW files, but for each file, once I've done the required edits, I "export as DNG" to make a backup which has the edits embeded in. I prefer to use RAW files as the main file but I save the backup as DNG just to save a bit of space)
However, if I replace a folder of RAW files myphoto1.CR2, myphoto2.CR2 with a folder of DNG the equivalents myphoto1.dng, myphoto2.dng then not surprisingly Lightroom shows the files are missing. (At this point all I'm doing is simulating a backup recovery). I can "find missing folder" easily enough and the ? disappears from the folder list, but the individual images in the library are still missing. Again this is not really surprising because although the file names are the same as those referenced in the library the extension is DNG rather than RAW.
Now the surprising part (for me anyway).....I can "find missing file" by pointing to the replacement DNG and it warns me that the file name is not the same (because the extension is different) and asks if I want to link them anyway. I say yes and once again the image file is linked to the image reference in the library. So far so good, BUT, despite ticking the box which is meant to link neighbouring files, only the one image is linked.
Clearly if I do face disaster and need to use my backup DNGs then I can't go individually linking each and every image. Is there a quicker way, or is my backup plan fundamentally flawed?
I uninstalled Lightroom, because it was too slow on my computer. It put a lot of library files and directories in My pictures folder.
When I use a backup program (SyncbackSE) to backup my pictures, it starts to scan all the Lightroom library files and it takes forever (hours and counting). Even though Windows cannot find the directories (with hidden and system files shown). I want to completely delete the Lightroom directories, because now I can't backup my images anymore. It is a pain in the dark places.
The hard drive on which I kept my LR library recently crashed. I need to import my files to LR from my backup HD. Is there a way to do this without creating duplicates and preserving the LR edits?
Since updating to LR4.2 and moving files around my backup files have grown too much, like 40GB over the last week. If I should uninstalled LR4.2 then re-installed, how do I locate those backup files (perhaps hidden!) before re-installing ?
I have lost my primary copies of all my photos due to a hard drive crash. The only copies I have now are in the folder structure created upon import backup (photos imported on...). My catalog is stored on a third drive, and is uneffected with the exception of all the photos being missing.
How can I match up my catalog with the files that are now not in the folder structure of the origionals? I have 65,000 photos in the cagalog, and locating each folder is daunting.
After importing into LR3, I get an error message that says: Some import operations were not performed. The following files could not be copied to the backup location.
Then there is a list of images (usually all of the photos imported). This didn't always happen and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. My LR catalog and backups are stored on an EHD.
I am currently saving all of my metadata to files (just to be sure) and backing up my catalog so I can upgrade to LR5 (already purchased) but want to be sure my catalog is good before I do that.I've tried everything I know - checking my backup location and drive in LR window match up.
hiya! so my master media library is running off a 1 tb outboard drive to lightroom and i have a 2 tb outboard drive as a master backup, i drag new media over to the drive through finder on a mac- will this be able to connect to lightroom's catalog in case of the primary drives eventual failure? is there a better way?
Shouldn't I be able to save my Lightroom Library to my Creative Cloud Files account? I understood this is done from the Sync button in the Lightroom Library.
When I import files from Photo Mechanic to LR4.1 the star ratingsfro PM show in LR, but when I then export again from LR the star ratings are gone in Photo Mechanic. Obviously I need to tag somewhere in the prefs, problem is I can't find where?
I can't seem to keep my star ratings on my files after I export them to JPG. My export settings are set to keep "All" metadata, but this doesn't seem to change it.
I'm running LR 4.1 RC and recently all the icons disappeared from the photos in the film strip at the bottom. I can no longer see star ratings, the icon for the quick collection, crop icon, or anything else. I did View Options (Right click) and everything is checked on.
We would like to export RAW files in their original RAW format AND retain their color correction and stars labels. We would then like to import these exported RAW + XMP files into other Lightroom Catalogs. Sometimes when we do this, however, the color correction and stars ratings from the last catalog are not visible.
I'm a hobbyist photographer with lots of personal photos and some I might use for work related projects. I'm just getting started with LR and want to make sure I start right.
1. What metadata fields should I consider using that may be useful in the future? None of my images currently have metadata applied. 2. Will star ratings and labels from Bridge show up in LR?
How can I create a smart collection that automatically includes 4+ star photos created in the last month plus 5 star photos created within the last year? (i.e., only show best photos further back in time, but more recently, show a wider selection of photos)
Apparently, you can't include results of one SmartCollection in another SmartCollection (i.e., "Collection" criteria does not operate on SmartCollections).
autocad is not saving backup files automatically, only when i manually save are they updated [defeating the purpose of them]. in my options - open and save - i have my automatic saves set to 3 minutes and am also set to create backup copy with each save.
Is there an automated backup for files that are not saved a single time? I have set automaticly backup every 5 minutes, but that seams only to work on files u have saved at least one time.
Did i just lost my whole work because automatic backup system is not activated on new files that are not saved yet?
When i back-up the catalogue, i assumed the backup would be mede of al the tags added to photo's. When i check the catalogue-files, i see a whole lot of jpg-files. My actual photo-collection contains jpg-, raw an avi-files.
I have a habit of making a copy of all my photofiles, but now it seems double
Question: Does de backup-function of photoshop elements 11 actually make a backup of tags and photo's?
Is there a way to exclude "backup" files from search. Don't tell me to turn off backup! They have saved me on more than one occasion. When I search my Corel "Jobs" directory which has over 40,000 files it shows all the backup files too. How can I exclude those files? No, creating a seperate place just for these files is not a viable solution either as the backups are set to save within the same directory as the Corel file. If it were seperate it would be really hard to find as we often just call files "18 x 24 coro" but under the clients name. Can't have the backup saving over others with the same name.
File directory is SERVERJobSavesCorel draw 9Aclients name...
I want to search all of Corel draw 9 but don't want to see "backup" files
What do you use to send and backup your AutoCAD files? I've heard of CADCloud which looks good: URL....What other CAD - specific solutions are there around?
I bought a highly recommended Western Digital My Book Essential external hard drive to backup image files, then discovered that the WD software doesn't support .dng files. Is there any way to get around the WD software and backup .dng files to the WD external drive? I'm using PS CS5.1, version 12.1 x32 on a PC with Windows XP professional.
Is it possible to change the default location for backup files to somewhere other than the folder in which the original file is located? Ideally I would specify a single location for all backups and tell Carbonite and my nightly mirror/sync application not to copy that folder.
How do I go about backing up the following before I install the Illustrator CS5 HTML5 Pack with Illustrator?: 15.0.1
Backup the following files: (restoration of these files are required for any future update) <Install>Adobe Illustrator CS5Plug-insExtensions Art Style.aip <Install>Adobe Illustrator CS5Plug-insExtensions CharParaStyles.aip <Install>Adobe Illustrator CS5Plug-insExtensions Layers Panel.aip <Install>Adobe Illustrator CS5Plug-insIllustrator Formats SVG File Format. aip <Install>Adobe Illustrator CS5Support Files ContentsWindowsSVGExport.dll
I just wanted to copy the file and put them in a new folder as backup. Will this be suficient or do I have to do something entirely different to back up these files? If so, I am uncertain how I would go about it if it includes the whole file location name as indicated above.
I have PSE11 on my old Windows XP computer. I have installed it also on my new Windows7 computer and hoped it would be easy to transfer the photos by backup/restore via an external hard drive.
When I try to restore a backup on to the new computer, no tly file is found. When I then look at that backup folder in Windows explorer the .tly file is absent. I tried again with an older backup, checking first that a tly file had was present, by looking on the old computer with Windows explorer. Looking with explorer on the new computer - no .tly file. Looking again with explorer on the old computer, the .tly file is gone!
I am completely mystified. I dont't want to keep trying as each successive backup is older. If the .tly files are gone, I assume the backup becomes useless.
I am not able to upload my files in my creative cloud into photoshop. I don't see the apps on te right side, but my it shows that photoshop is downloaded. Creative cloud is on my desktop, but when I open it I jut see a list of products downloaded.
