Lightroom :: Can Change The Name Of Catalog?
Dec 23, 2013I was on the road for a few weeks and needed to make temporary use of a storage arrangement on my computer's hard drive, thinking that when I returned that I could simply move these folders to the main file area I keep on a seperate external drive. However, it wasn't that simple as I now find out that Lightroom is calling the backup files by a new name it made up itself somehow. Syncing the files was problem too but I simply reconstructed the entire catalog and I think that is where the name change originated without me being aware.
Can I change the name of this catalog from the name Lightroom wants to use now, back to the name which I prefer that is more relevant?
Lightroom :: Why Do Filenames Add -2 Upon Import
May 2, 2013I know a file with the same attributes of an existing image cannot have the same filename and that duplicates will add '-2. But the images I'm importing are not already in a Lightroom catalog. I don't understand why Lightroom is adding '-2' to the end of each filename.

Nov 26, 2012I'm trying to move to a new computer (goign from an OS X system to a Windows 7 system), and I've discovered that one of the characters I've been using in some of my filenames is illegal in Windows. I need to change that character so these filenames are acceptable to Windows without losing the associations in LR (virtual copies, metadata, etc.). However, I can't seem to find a way o do this in LR. There are too many of them to do this one at a time, either renaming them individually in LR or using another utility to bulk rename and then reassociating the files individually in LR. Is there a solution to this I am missing?

Jun 1, 2012I recently upgraded to LR 4.1 on a Win 7x64 machine. I noticed that a large number of jpg, psd and maybe some xmp files that are in my catalog had their last modified date set to the current date even though I did not edit them. Is this a possible issue with Lightroom 4.1? (I also upgraded to PS CS6 but did not edit the files in question).
Another note: They tend to be older files (1 or more years old) and from one physical drive (which happens to have the older files) and not another.
Changed to add that jpg file dates were also changed.
Lightroom :: Finding Filenames Or Folders In Libraries Over Volumes?
Jan 11, 2013for rendering purposes (we work on stop-motion-stop films) in our company's processing workflow, I export many different image sequences with 1000 or more JPG images from many different RAW NEF folders. All these folders with 1000s of RAW NEF files get developed and then exported as JPGs
- into folders on various volumes on servers. so other people then further render from these folders in AE or other hosts.
sometimes however, after a week or month, for whatever reason we need to re-develop original RAW NEFs of a folder of a specific set in it's original lightroom folder (from where those JPGs had been exported from).
By knowing a filename like for example _DSC7561.jpg out of a JPG export folder I then would like to quickly find and locate the original folder within the LR4 library, containing e.g. the file _DSC7561.nef from where that JPG was exported from (for specific reasons I can not change all those export JPG folders are on different volumes than the original folders with RAW file sequences).
So, when I sit in front of LR4 on the RAW development stations is there a way to find
- folders in the lightroom catalogue in volumes or over volumes (by their known folder name or part of their foldername)?
- filenames or part of filenames in folders over volumes, or within a volume?
it is so time consuming to scroll all folders to find an original folder with RAWfiles from where we developed and exported JPGs. we keep those RAW folders not only for the original RAW files of course, but also because of the XMP sidecar files with all the development changes. sometimes we even store snapshots or several stages of XMP processing to them.
Of course LR4 offers search for a filename within a folder via CMD+F, but we don't need that actually.
we need CMD+F for the library search for foldernames or folders over a volume at least, but better would be various volumes.
are there any LR4 plugins or tools that solve this? Or did I oversee something?
I can of course search for any folder containing a file _DSC7561.nef outside of LR4 in finder with tools like "Tembo" or "Find any File" easily, but that don't jumps me to the folder in the LR4 library, with all my developement changes.
PS: we don't use keywords, it is not possible with TB of images each week but we use specific sequencing names for image file sequences and structured folders of course.
Lightroom :: Applying Individual Filenames To Virtual Copies?
Oct 1, 2013I'd like to give various virtual copies different filename (or add an appendage to the name) to describe their use. But changing one virtual copy changes all from the same original image. Is there any way to rename them individually?

Lightroom :: Can Update Catalog On Laptop And Then Transfer Updates To Master Catalog On Desktop
Jan 13, 2011I don't want to have the original files on both laptop and desktop.
I want to make a copy of a Lightroom 3 catalog to put on my laptop so while on the move I can be geo-tagging and keywording to 8000 photographs. I don't want to drag an external drive with me. I just want to be able to work on the catalog metadata and have all the updates/changes stored there (on the laptop)(in the catalog) and then transfer the catalog back to the desktop (to the primary archive) and have all the updates/changes pushed back into the DNG's or the XMP sidecar files alongside the CR2's. These changes would be only keywording and possibly writing GPS data into them….NOT image edits (that would probally require access to the original image files)
As a test, I tried "exporting as catalog", TWO images (with the source images "unavailable"). I flash-drived the resulting catalog to my laptop. I opened the catalog in LR3 and made changes to the metadata. I tried both "saving metadata to file" and "updating DNG previews" (which would be useless anyway since I could not write data back to the missing originals) and also tried doing nothing and just closing LR, then pulling the flashdrive and plugging it into the DESKTOP.(knowing the changes are stored within the catalog itself only) I open the 2 picture catalog in LR and see the keyword updates. Hurrah!
I switch over to the master catalog. All I want to do is import the updated metadata (keywording, contrast, etc…) back into the master catalog and push the data into the original DNG or XMP. On import I select "replace: Metadata and develop settings only" (with or without "preserve old settings" checked) and click import. Voila! NOTHING HAPPENS and the updated keywords are NOT picked up.
I know that the metadata updates were carried out because they showed up when I opened it separately in LR! For some reason they don't seem to making through the import process to the master catalog…
Lightroom :: Sharing Catalog - Does Housing Catalog And Images On External Hard Drive Work
Jan 15, 2014I will be managing a small portion of a client's overall image workflow by updating their web prescence on a regular basis with new work and retagging/uploading old work. I believe this requires the catalog and the image library to be housed on an external hard drive that can travel between the two of us. We are both working on PC's with LR 5.3.
The workflow would look something like this:
Client downloads new images onto external hard drive and imports into LR "ClientCatalog" is created Flags Picks and Creates a Collection from those Picks.Hard drive is handed off to me where I open "ClientCatalog".Make suggested edits to images add detailed tags and metadata upload to various social media sites and websites return hard drive to client
Is there potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive then there are no worries about the catalog containing all the latest updates. Are there any "safety protocols" you would add in to this workflow (besides mirroring everythign on another hard drive)?
Lightroom :: How To Merge Catalogs By Importing A Catalog Into A Master Catalog
Dec 15, 2012I'm using Lightroom 1. I tried to merge catalogs by importing a catalog into a master catalog, but there were some problems. The one I noticed immediately was that the collections are not correct. It imported the collections, but for example one collection now has only 4 photos when the originbal had 140? How can I fix that? (Although not necessariy a problem, it seems to have the wrong number of photos imported too. It says the previous import was 3175 photos when it was more like 10,000.)

i saw that there is an option to export all my LR4 catalog as a new catalog and than import it into LR5.i haven't tried that yet since i'm worry that i might loose some info. will this process (of exporting and importing) keep all my LR settings? like develop user presets, keywords and collections?

One issue we have come across is, if we create a pdf file and then need to recreate the same file we can not overwrite the existing file. We are forced to either give the new file a different name or go back and delete the existing file prior to creating the new one.

3ds Max :: Texture Filenames Missing From 3Ds Export?
Jul 23, 2012I’m working with an external team of artists and they supply meshes to me in .3ds file format. They just upgraded to 3ds Max 2013, and now the materials defined in the .3ds files don’t seem to have textures associated with them. I can see using a binary diff on the file versions that the material names have also been contracted to just their first letters. I have found the material names elsewhere in the file, but not the texture filenames.
Has something changed in the .3ds exporter with Max 2013? The files are coming out significantly smaller, which is good, but without the textures in materials I can’t use them.
Photoshop Elements :: Smart Fix Filenames
Mar 12, 2014I use smart fix to process multiple files in organizer. Smart fix creates a new version of each file with a filename with "_edited-1" added to the original filename. I then flatten version set, and tell Photoshop to delete the original files. Now I have the edited files, all with the "_edited-1" filename format. I want to retain the original picture filename. Outside of Photoshop, I can bulk rename the photos to get rid of the "_edited-1" additions to the filenames, but then Photoshop needs to rebuild the database. There must be a simpler way to edit all the photos and retain the original photo filenames. I'm using Photoshop Elements 11 and am inexperienced with the package.

Using AutoCAD 2011's batch plot, or TrueView 2014's batch plot the default PDF filename when plotting to PDF appears to be:
<file_name>-<layout_name>.pdf
Which is okay. But I want to append to that the revision of the layout (C1, C2, etc.) which I currently store in a title block as a block attribute value. Any method for somehow pulling this out and including it after the filename such that I could end up with:
<file_name>-<layout_name>-<revision>.pdf
We're currently trying to transition to using the Sheet Set Manager, is the above any easier to achieve using that?

It used to plot to the complete filename, swapping the JPG or PDF extension for the DWG extension, until last Friday.
Photoshop :: Using Actions: Saving Files With Consecutive Filenames
Dec 3, 2002Question about saving images through an action. According to the 7.0 help manual, I should leave the filename as the default if I want my files to be saved with consecutive names (i.e. image01,image02, etc).
I created an action to do a number of things before saving my file.. everything works great except that photoshop keeps saving my file as 'untitled-1.jpg,' which overwrites the previous file of the same name. What can i do? Feel free to IM as well.

Therefore I can't figure out which pictures to highlight (after I have spent a long time analyzing each one individually). Specifying downloads to a dated folder name exacerbates the problem when combining the pics into a common folder at a later time. We have been manually renaming but this is becoming burdensome. Inventor adds extra spaces to the parts list filenames when they wrap.
The space is added just before the break.
We access the parts list in several VBA programs. Mainly to get the line Item number.
With the Filename corrupted with random space characters I cannot tie the document to the item number in code.
Is there a way to get the true fully pathed document name from a parts list Line item instead of the flakey filename that is displayed?
