Lightroom :: Why Does Not Update All Previews After Batch Change
Sep 22, 2013
I imported more 2,000 pictures. Then I did one batch change (adjusting the curve (tonality) by Lightroom).
But it looks like, only on the page, I actually see, the previews are updated.
If go to the next page of 24 pictures. At first I see the old preview. Then the CPU and hard drive activity is increasing and picture by picture the preview is updated. So I've to wait 15 seconds, until I can decide, if the settings of the pictures are a good start or not. And then I've to page again and wait 15 seconds
I expect, that Lightroom does it: in backgroundin parallel and not only one picture by picture (15 seconds are cause by sequencially processing; I've an Intel i7 with 4 cores and 3.6 GHz, it's not the slowest machine, but Lightroom only use up to 25% of my whole CPU resources. how I should be able to handle a mass of pictures, if I have to page and wait always.
Is there any magic shurtcut, command, setting, to enforce such an auto update?
is there a method or setting to force LR4 to update the prewies in "bulk", means outside of the grid too?
problem is that when applying development changes on image sequences with hundreds of images, or even a smaller bunch of images LR4 only shows the applied changes in the current grid view.
for updating the previews one has to go back and forth in preview by hand. this seems a bit stone age and can take a while.
this was never a problem in bridge, which - although it took its time to create ALL previews - afterwards allowed for quick scrolling trough images with all previews generated. this was especially good for watching stop-motion movies and applying xmp RAW development changes.
for LR4 RC3, this would be a nice option to have... classic, like it is now, and a "force update previews outside grid view" with a true progress indicator / counter, like with bridge.
an example where we started using lightroom during production and ran exactly into the problem of slow / missing preview updates after applying batch XMP / development changes can be seen here (about 32000 raw files processed, 7500 used for the film)[url].....
I've recently moved from iPhoto and already had a hard time figuring out how to replicate the "hidden" photos and how not to display them in lists etc. by default.
Now I'm hanging on another thing I simply couldn't find in LR4 yet but believe it must be there - at least it would be a no-brainer to implement this if I were a programmer of LR.
The feature I'm talking about is the user-definable preview picture for each "event" in iPhoto.
In LR, in the Library module, there is this folder selection menu on the left-hand panel. Now when I hover all the folders shown there the picture in the Navigator changes to resemble the respective first picture in each of the folders.
What I want to do is select a different "preview" picture for each folder and save this setting inside the Lightroom catalog I'm currently in.
How do I accomplish that - or is it impossible with the current version of Lightroom?
It's my understanding that a change made to a disconnected smart preview will automatically update the main database when connected to the drive containing the photo and database. Mine doesn't seem to work automatically. After reconnecting i have to save the metadata for the changed files on the version of Lightroom with the samrt previews and then read the metadata on the primary version of Lightroom. Do both versions of Lightroom need smart previews installed? Should I use a certain procedure of which i'm not aware? I have an iMac for my main computer and a Mac Book Pro for the remote computer.
I'm creating a drawing set that has over 100 sheets with varying amounts of viewports on each sheet (from one to four). Each sheet is its own file, so there is only one layout per file. For each section of the drawing set, the viewports will have the same layer state.
Is there were a way to update the layerstate of each viewport through a batch LISP routine? This would save me DAYS in opening each file, importing the layer state, and restoring it for each viewport. It seems straight forward, but I have no idea where to start with batch routines.
I have just installed Lightroom 3 - on PC laptop - and imported some images from the Picture Folder on the OS drive.Everything seems to be fine except (and its a major except) there are absolutely no thumbnails or previews of these pictures appearing in Lightroom to work on. I have tried this with a few different file formats.
In LR 4, you should skip the previews and just start playing a slideshow (it would render as it played). It looks like that's been removed in LR5? How can I restore the LR4 functionality?
I have about 20 gigs of previews on my hard drive, yet have LR set up to delete the 1:1 previews after 1 day. How to force LR to get rid of all these previews and free up the 20 gigs of hard drive space?
Facts - MacPro with 16gb ram and latest OS X. When i import images 1:1 previews are generated. My preferences file says to never get rid of 1:1's and I have a 90gb cache file. Using 2 - 24" monitors.
Question:Grid view in one display and the other shows loupe view. When click on loupe view on second monitor to go to 1:1 it can take 15 seconds (D800 files) for the 1:1 loupe view to show. What is weird is that if I go to an image in grid (second monitor off) and go to the menus and build a 1:1 preview then when I open loupe on the second miniotr and go to 1:1 it is immediate with no waiting.
Added later Have instructed LR to build 1:1 previews on a group of files. After doing this the 1:1 loupe view is immediate. For those images that were not yet rendered took time to show 1:1 in loupe.
I rerally do not understand how this is happening since 1:1s were rendered at import. Evbidently the import 1:1s have been removed - but why?
I just switched from a PC (XP) to an iMac (Lion), and have gotten all of the pictures and catalog moved over. HOwever, none of the previews show. When I go to develop mode, picture opens, preview generated: But, when I then switch to another file, the preview seems to disappear and has to be regenerated each time.
Is it possible to make preview photos that have the exclamation mark ( ! ) top right - into low res jpegs? I seem to have accidently deleted the RAW files before exporting.. not sure how this happened as I don't recall doing it. They are not on my external hard drive and sadly not on my memory card either.
I have pictures on an external hard drive that are imported into my catalog. One folder ( out of many) when called up do not show previews when in Library. If I choose develop, the pictures appears and so does the preview. When I try to backup , I get an error message that my preview cache is having a problem. All other folders have good previews.
I just installed LR 5 and find all the previews grayed out. In grid view I see only placeholders and metadata, no images. Also the navigator window is blank. When I go to develop-mode the image stays invisible, until I enter the cropping mode. Only then the image becomes visible, but after exiting this tool it is gray again. Removed LR and installed again, same issue.
Tuesday night, I was working on a senior photo session. Everything was working perfectly fine. I decided to export the 2013 sessions to a new catalog. Everything still looking great. No issues.
Some potentially important info: I was using two monitors: a pro-level Viewsonic LED backlit 24" calibrated monitor and my laptop monitor. I was working with the Nvidia driver to calibrate the laptop monitor to be "close" to the pro monitor. I was able to get there using the Nvidia controls (versus the defaults). Then the Nvidia auto-updater prompted me to update my video driver that same night. I let it do its thing. Everything appeared to be fine with it and I was still able to work with LR5 no problems.
I had to take a break for a few hours. So, I closed LR5 and came back later to work on more images. When I pulled up the new 2013 catalog, all the image previews (thumbnail and large) were gone. The physical images were still on the drive, but I couldn't see them to edit nor preview them no matter what module I chose. I selected various images I'd just worked on and went to the Develop module - no dice. The preview was not working nor any thumbnail previews.
So I did some troubleshooting. I deleted the LR5 prefs file and let it recreate the file. Still nothing. Same behavior. I went to uninstall LR5 thinking I'd just reset the whole shebang, and noticed that I had LR5 and LR5CC installed (apparently CC didn't uninstall the single license version). So I uninstalled both LR5 installations. I rebooted and reinstalled from CC.
...still nothing... same behavior.
I uninstalled it again (since it's unusable) and installed Bridge CC. Voila! The images are all there and I can work with them in ACR, etc. No issues at all.
This leads me to believe that something got messed up with LR5's configuration with previews. I believe I did have Smart Previews enabled.
So now that you have all that info and backdrop: What should I do to get LR5 back to normal so I can keep working on these paying gigs? If i can understand what caused the break, I'll avoid doing that from now on.
I've seen this topic on the threads, but mostly for previous versions. I have LR4, and my previews load so slowly. How can I speed them up? Bridge handles the previews so fast and it is so much nicer going through with that program, but I'd like to move my workflow to LR4 solely. But hard to with the preview handling being so much slower.
Veteran LR user here. Since updating, LR 5 consistently causes snags (for us) when creating web galleries. Here's the workflow: after editing raw files and applying settings, we have a nice folder of images cropped and ready to preview with client.
Now, when we go to the Web Module, the previews are grayed-back in the Filmstrip, and images won't appear in any of the web gallery templates (either custom ones we designed or the preset versions.) We've tried everything from flagging and staring images to get them to appear. Also save metadata to all the images in the folder.
The only thing that seems to work is to close LR5--with backup and catalog optimization--then, we re-open LR5. That seems to "free up" the Web Module. Upon reopening LR5, our folder of images suddenly appears when we go to the Web Module.
This is an unacceptable work around b/c closing and optimizing takes alot of time. Making web proofing galleries used to be a snap in previous versions of LR, now we're stumped in LR5 trying to figure out what we're doing wrong.
I created a catalog with smart previews from my PC (Win 7, 64 bit) and copied it onto my macbook pro (OSX 10.9.1) via a thumb drive. I can view the photos fine, zoom in and use the develop controls. However I get no histogram, cannot export and below the histogram it just says 'photo is missing'.
The whole point of this exercise was to choose and export lo-res selects to customers when out of the office. I can't do that.
Frequently LR directs my display to actually change 1:1 sharp previews to blurry, and if I come back to them later, they are sharp for about 1 sec and become blurry again.AND there is no "loading..." note.
No, these are not modified files. They are fresh imports with 1:1 previews as always.I can get proper 1:1 in the app window. Lucky I know this or I'd have thrown away lots of stuff.
It's the Window>secondarydisplay>show that fails. That display is actually the DVI input. The primary screen app window is the VGA input.
I experience a lot of annoying waiting time watching the progress bar while Lightroom is "preparing the previews in advance". In previous versions you could skip this process and the previews were built while the slideshow was running, which was performing very well.
Please bring back this "feature". I know the previews don't have to be built if you already have 1:1 previews but it's not very convinient to have 1:1 previews for every image you might want to show in a slideshow. Especially since LIghtroom 5 invented the Smart Previews I don't understand why these previews can't be used for the slideshow module as well.
Is there a bugfix coming or any workaround within LR (no 3rd party software)?
I've had trouble since upgrading from LR3 to LR4 with previewing files on import. Sometimes reports no import, sometimes just shows thumbnail; sometimes fails on all photos, sometimes on just some. Happens for different file formats (ie, JPEG, raw from different cameras), different card readers, different USB ports. Canceling the import and selecting import again seems to be a workaround, but this is annoying nonetheless.
All what I get are gray previews with a newly built catalogue and also with an older one after having moved my pictures and LR to a new PC. The pictures contain some metadata like numbers and scores (stars or colors) of a former evaluation. These gray pictures appear in all modules, except in the web module. Only there I get the normal appearance. The monitor is recently calibrated, and I also deleted the .irdata file and got a rebuilt one, but this did'nt change the situation.
I am running out of room on my OS SSD and have a spare SSD and would like to move the Previews folder.
I tried using this link:
[URL]
Which says the method will redirect LR to another folder on a different drive - but it doesn't seem to work for me (Win 7). If I do what it suggests and delete the previews folder (after backing it up), LR just begins to recreate new previews on the C-drive LR folder in My Pictures.
I set create smart previews when I imported my images...none show up.
I selected some files (with originals available) and went Library>previews>create smart previews...the tast bar zipped across the top left but no previews were created.
I installed LR5 as a commercial upgrade to LR4.3 on Win8 Pro 64bit, latest versions. All catalog previews has been rebuild. I have a really annoying issue where previews, when zoomed in to 1:1 on a second monitor is not at 1:1 resolution. It only seems to happen in the Develop module. No such problem existed in previous versions of LR.
Workaround:
1 - zoom in on primary monitor
2 - switch to another photo
3- switch back to original
Now zoom will work.
I'm editing 5d2 21Mp .CR2 (raw) files, as well as TIFF's and DNG's. All seem to have the same problem. I have 3 monitors, it makes no difference which of the other 2 I use as a preview device. It also makes no difference if I do a full-screen preview or a window preview on the secondary monitor. I've selected the image in the library module, in the original import folder.
I suspect what is happening is that the 1:1 previews are somehow not being build when zooming to 1:1 on the second monitor in the develop module. In the Library module, I can see the "image loading" when a 1:1 is not available, but in the develop module, the image just zooms in and there is no rebuild. Or maybe the preview is there but it's just not loaded.
I have just noticed a problem that I have not encountered until I upgraded to 3.3. After I export my images as jpegs, the thumbnail previews are not complete for a few of the files. I get about two corrupt thumbnails in Windows Explorer out of 100 exported images. Here is a screenshot showing what they look like.

The images are fine when I open the files, but the previews are not complete. I would like to fix it so my clients don't get "broken" thumbnail views.
