Lightroom :: Embedding Editing Steps In A File?
Apr 2, 2014
I have been trying all week to find out if there is a way to embed editing information into a file upon exporting it from LR. Can you use metadata? What I mean, is, years down the road, I want to remember how I edited a particular photo... Is there anyway for me to do that so it's in the photo's properties?

I have just edited some photos for a friend who was short on time, and now she would like a list of the steps I took in editing. Is there any way of listing those steps in a text file I could send her?

When one decides to edit a photograph what do people use as a rule of thumb to know what to do 1st.Assuming one will change contrast, do something to the color, enlarge a photo, use onOne software to create a frame, delete a wire etc.

We have an Inventor Drawing Border Template which is 381KB in size. We have a drawing checklist in PDF format which is 182KB in size
We thought to insert this into the IDW file so it would appear in the browser bar as embedded under the 3rd party section this actually works a treat....BUT The total file size of the template is then 2049KB which is too large. Why is it when inserting a 182KB File into a 381KB file it creates a combined file size of nearly 4 times the size of the 2 files?
It seemed difficult to have files this large repeated over and over again.

How to save an .eps file from Illustrator without embedding the text? I don't mean the fonts, but the actual text. I've created a logo that has text in it, and I want to save a copy as a vector-graphic, without any selectable, searchable text baked into it. I know that I can convert the text to outlines, but I want to actually keep the .ai file to work on, and keep the text in that file to edit.
The only solution I can think of is to duplicate my text layers and convert them to outlines, but that's incredibly convoluted.

I want to export some files for printing by a service bureau using a custom profile which is 1.87 MB and do no not want to embed the profile. The images will then be sent directly to the printer without any adjustments and the profile is not needed. This is an option in Photoshop, but I have not found a way to do this in Lightroom.

LR5 Win7. I open a previously edited image in Develop module. I click on the first step of the history ("import...."). Immediately, all the history steps disappear, and a new step appears, "Post-crop vignette style: paint overlay." There are now just two steps in my history. When I try to click on the first/origial step, LR doesn't let me do that, it immediately jumps to (highlights) the "post-crop..." step. If I go to the Effects panel, the only option under style is "paint overlay." If I add a few more edits (change color, etc.) they work fine. But as soon as I click on the first history step, the same thing happens again.
Update as i work on this: if I click on ANY previous step in the history, LR adds the "Post-crop..." step at the top and does not then let me click on any previous step.
This does not happen with photos I have edited recently. It only happens with previously edited photos. I think it only happens with photos with 2003 or 2010 process, but it doesn't happen with all of them.
Then I tried opening one of these photos in the Develop module. I create a virtual copy, then go back to the original. I click on the first history step in the original, it does this strange thing described above. If I add more history steps to the original, then click on the first step, it also does this strange thing. However, if I add edits to the virtual copy, then click on the first step, it does not do this strange thing.
What I have tried:
-I have opened and restarted LR.
-I have gone back to a catalog from a few days previously and it exhibits the same behavior.
-I have tried updating the process before clicking on the earlier step, and this does not prevent the behavior.
I wanted to try to re-install LR, but when I try to download it, I get this message, "We're sorry, something seems to be wrong on our end. Please try again later."

I have just editted an image, initially by cropping, then making some general tweaks. I saved this as a Snapshot.
After some though, I decided I wanted to change the crop, so I went back to the original image, and re-cropped it. Fine, But now I wanted to re-apply some of the changes made in the Snapshot. How can I see the steps that I went through to create the snapshot? I saw Update with Current Settings on the sub-menu (right click) for the snapshot, but wasn't sure if that was what i wanted to do.

I am having two problems with Nikon Raw Processing and LR4.1.
1st: I am producing and processing content for ESO (European South Observatory), especially TimeLapses. Those sequences consist of hundreds of Images in hundreds of folders. Source files are either from D3s, D4, D700, D7000 or the like.
Several development changes are applied to single key images in a sequence, and those later applied to all images in that sequence. Problem is that after a certain amount of development changes (that are written in to the XMP sidecar files with LR4), hot pixels start to show up in the images that were not visible before.
Seems like the oversaturated pixel information (Hot Pixel) that is always stored within the RAW images, is lost after a certain amount of development changes.
2nd: is there a known trick how to force LR4 into updating ALL thumbnails after development changes, including those, that are outside the currently visible grid view?
It is very time consuming to manually page up and down the grid to have LR4 updating the thumbnails on each page (of for example a folder of 1200 images) so that one gets a preview of the TL sequence with the current development changes in Library View.

I just purchases LR3 and am shooting with Canon's T3i. When I import the RAW files (CR2), LR3 does not recognize the files and will not open them for editing. I am using LR3 on a Mac.
I am importing into iPhoto and then copying the RAW files into a folder designated only for LR3.I've downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw 6.6 update and the LR3 Mac 3.6 update.what I am doing incorrectly as Adobe states LR3 supports Canon's CR2 RAW files.

if it is possible to take a camera raw file from lightroom and open it directly in Camera Raw for editing rather than use the editing in LR itself. I thought I read somewhere that it is possible to do this as an automatic setting - when choosing the "edit in Photoshop" menu option a raw file will be opened in Camera Raw and the changes tracked in LR. I prefer the Camera Raw interface in Ps so am hoping I can do this and then proceed on to Ps if I need to do further processing. I am using LR4 and Ps6 on a Mac with the latest updates. I am a recent convert to LR/Ps from Aperture so am still learning.

Lightroom is getting hung up when "Preparing file for editing" while trying to edit in external programs. Lightroom 4 did it when I tried to edit in Silver Efex Pro. Now I have a new computer and Lightroom 5. Lightroom 5 just started doing it when trying to edit in Silver Efex Pro AND Photoshop CS5.

I shoot in raw and typically edit files as ProPhoto uncompressed 16-bit TIFFs. It's been a while since I set that as my default and I can't remember what the tradeoffs were for compression and even PSD vs. TIFF. Is there a handy reference to inform these choices?

After editing a photo in an external application, only the original raw file can be seen. The edited photo is hidden, even when searched for by name.
I have been reduced to the following workaround, which has the drawback of deleting all the original raw (.cr2) edits: Edit the photo; edit in external application; save and close. Back in lightroom, delete the raw file (from lightroom only); then close lightroom, reopen it and then at last I can see my edited file. Then I have to re-import the raw file and of course the edits have disappeared. But at least the final result can be seen.
The photos are supposed to be in a stack, but there appears to be a bug in this function because you can only ever see the raw file.

I have some TIFF files I need to do some adjustments on. Mostly darkening the sky. Where the sky meets the foreground it is made up of tops of Spruce Trees.
My question is, can/should I use the adjustment brush in Lightroom to do this, or should I make a layer in Photoshop to do this?
I have found that when using the adjustment brush over the tops of Spruce trees, it is best to just paint over the whole thing, or else it will look artificial. Not sure if doing this in Photoshop would make my life easier?

I have done a lot of editing with VideoStudio Pro on current system but never ran into somthing like this:
I have a 2.7G file that I pulled from my DVR (mpg). Plays well on my ThinkPad but when I try to load it into VideoStudio Pro X3 (13.6.2.69) the software stops responding (get the "not responding" message) and I have to end the process.
I updated to SP3, no luck. Uninstalled and reinstalled VideoStudio, no luck. Search Corel and various boards and found nothing about file size being an issue. Even adjusted virtual memory settings.

I was wanting to create an image of text embedded in a metal block. Is there any way to use the 3D tools in Photoshop CS6 to create this kind of effect ? I've only been able to extrude text 'up' ( if you know what I mean ! ) rather than down into a negative space.

I made a 50 page book in photoshop cs2, dont ask why I made it in there but I did it all. I'm having it printed from files on a disc, the printer requested that I put each file in a .psd format (not a problem) and a .pdf format as well (again not a problem) but he also asked that I embed the fonts I used into the .psd file so that he prints exactly what I created with the same fonts and all. Im not sure how to do this?

Have just put the finishing touches on a book cover and now need to embed the fonts plus the following. Can I use GIMP to do this?
Fonts and images are embedded.
Bookmarks, annotations, and comments are disabled.
Document security (any type) is not used.
PDF/X format is used. PDF/X is preferred, but if you are submitting non-PDF/X files (for example, PDF/A), any comments, forms, or other non-printing objects could be removed during our review process.
Transparent objects are flattened.
Spreads and printer's marks are disabled.
Downsampling, or decreasing resolution, of images is disabled.
Bleeds are enabled (if applicable).

We have Inventor DWG templates that I have created based on our AutoCAD DWG templates. We chose the INV DWG route to simplify template creation. However, our logo has a gradient hatch with the 'O', something which Inventor cannot handle. So we now modify the logo only, changing the 'O' to an embedded bitmap image. The same goes for the ISO logo.
After doing this, I noticed the drawings were increasing in size, at a much higher rate than detail I was addding to the drawings. If I go to Tools > Links, i see that the bitmaps are being replicated, over and over (seems like after every save, or every time the drawing is opened). The count can hit around 45 embeddings!
The problem is that the logo randomly drops off (on screen and after printing) due to there being too many embeddings, and I cannot save the Inventor DWG to an AutoCAD DWG any longer (clients request editable DWGs).
Question : How do I stop the embedding replications?
Drawing with all views deleted. Notice file size of 8mb. Normal size around 1.4mb from template file.

I have a tight head shot of a guy and I need to embed a steel zipper onto his face so that it looks like his mouth has been sealed shut by the zipper. This needs to look as realistic as possible.
I have shot both and am about to morph them together. I do not have issues with close cutting the zipper it is more about how to "embed" it so that it looks realistic.

I am trying to find out how to embed a mixed ink image into Illustrator (multiple spot colors) and not get single images once it's placed. So far I've only been able to do it with DCS 2.0 files which can only be linked, not embedded. I have been successful with saving PSD files and deleting all of the layer artwork, just keeping the channels, however when I embed that file it converts it into single images of each spot channel and not a mixed ink image. Basically what I'm looking for is when you look up at the top left bar when you have the image selected it should say embedded: mix ink image PPI: 300 or something like that. Instead I've only been able to get single image to show up. What format is required to get that?

Below is a link to a github repo that has a code example showing how to embed an IronPython engine inside a C# addin. It is the same as the "Simple AddIn" that comes with the SDK, only with the logic part of the addin factored out into IronPython. I could never find anything on using IronPython with Inventor so I'm posting this for any others that might be interested.
The main reason for doing this is to speed up development time. Edits related to the python code do not require the cycle of shutting down Inventor, compiling, restarting etc. More detail is in the readme. URL....

We have recently started having issues with our sets coming back from the printers. We are using ACA 2013. We us the "Arial" font for all of our noting.
When we need a check set printed we typically send a PDF of the set to our printer for reproduction. Lately I have been using the "export > to pdf" function under the drop down. The problem is, when we view the PDF in our office, it is perfect but when we ship it off to the printer he see's missing letters and open boxes in some areas instead of letters.
I am assuming that this is because the font is being substituted with something else. When I recreate the PDF using the plot command and use the Adobe PDF printer I can uncheck the "Rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts". This seems to remedy the problem and the printer is able to print and view the PDF just fine.
So, is it possible to set the default settings of whatever the "export to pdf" uses to convert the dwg into a pdf so that is will embed the fonts. There is not an option for that under the Export to DWF/PDF options.

(it does not do that only if I select first option when exporting to PDF called Draft Quality, however, in this mode pictures are in low resolution)

My problem might be a little more complicated than most problems considered 'beginner', but for all I know about GIMP (which is very little), it could be very simple.
I wish to superimpose text on an image so that the text's color us what color it was superimposed upon. To better explain what I want, take this rainbow image:
[URL]
Say somebody type a large lowercase g near the top left corner of the image. The top circle of the g would be red whereas the bottom circle (or hook depending on the font) would be purple since it dips that far down.
After I finish typing the text, I could save that layer, or cut/copy that text as a new image and save it then.
