Lightroom :: Changing Names Of Missing Files?
Dec 22, 2013
So I managed to have a fatal two disk crash and almost lost half of my catalogue. Luckily, I recovered one of the drives, but it renamed all of my files. I was using original file names (dumb mistake), and it seems there is no way to recover them. In the future I will be using YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS to keep things recoverable.
So at the moment I have recovered and renamed the files along those lines (YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS). What I want to do is rename the links in the catalogue to match as the files have that exif data, and then I think I can recover the files. Of course, Lightroom is throwing up roadblocks. I'd like to recover the photos with their edits, so is there a way to rename the files in the catalogue to match my new files?

Using the publish feature, I published some files to a hard drive using a publish service. Some of the files I had renamed from the default camera name convention to my own name convention. Others I had not changed the name from the default. After working on the original files, I renamed the files that had not been renamed, and then I republished them. I was expecting the republished files to have their new name, but they did not - they had the old names. I've tried republishing several times. I deleted the republished version of the file and then republished and it still came back with the old file name.
What in blue blazes is going on here? How can I get the names of the published files to match the names of the files in Lightroom?

I'm looking to change the way Gimp names the layers I create. I primarily use the application for 2D animation and would like to have the layer names be structured so that I don't have to change every one for each animation.

I accidentally included a file rename when I just imported a batch of several hundred pictures. I violated a rule that I teach my own Lightroom students, and that is to look carefully at the import panel choices before proceeding.
How can I correct this so that the files are named as they originally were? I know how to easily fix the filenames in Windows (using a tool called BulkRename, for example), but then I'd have to "find" each image one-by-one and correctly point to the renamed version. I tried selecting all the images and then using F2 to rename, but none of the templates allow deleting a portion of the filename.
P.S. Here is an example of what I mean:
ON CARD:
IMG_0001.NEF
...
IMG_0300.NEF
WHAT I RENAMED TO ACCIDENTALLY:
IMG_0001 {shot by John Doe}.NEF
...
IMG_0300 {shot by John Doe}.NEF

Is it possible to edit a block name? The alternate solution is to create a new block (door) to accurate describe sizing/ type and copy to and delete old blocks w/ innacurate names. Because of the high number of doors, the alternate solution would take much longer.

I've been given about 14 DWGs from another company all on different discs. Each DWG is a page to a set of Shop Drawings. All objects are in model space. I want to combine all of them into one drawing but every drawing has similar block names with different objects associated with the block and when I copy the objects from one drawing to antoher, the blocks morph into the exisiting block, if that makes sense. Just a poor initial set up.
Anyway, the solution to this, I have found, is to rename the blocks in each drawing to have room numbers on the ends, giving them unique names and avoiding the "morph" upon inserting. I have about 15 blocks per drawings to add -XX with XX being 01-14. Is there an easy way to modify them or do I need to do the RENAME command as many times as needed in each drawing?

I am currently using a Nikon D7100 and recording my photos in the Raw/NEF-RAW format. Recently, whenever I am uploading my photos to Lightroom 5, my photos are changing to .dng files rather than staying in the NEF file. When I go and look back at my previous imports from the past few times, they are in NEF and NOT in .dng. Why is this doing this and how do I turn this feature off so that my files remain the same going from my camera to my computer through importation.

LR4 does not seem to be creating a XMP file for TIF files edited in LR4.
Here's the workflow where I noticed XMP files are missing: 1. Edit in LR4. 2. Open for further editing in PS6. 3. Save as TIF. 4. Further editing in LR4.
I'm expecting to see an XMP file associated with the TIF file. I'm not seeing that in Windows explorer. LR4 is creating XMPs for the edited NEF (NIKON RAW) files but not for TIF files.
Is this a problem (bug) or by design? If LR4 doesn't save a XMP for the TIF file and the Catalog becomes corrupted, does that mean I would loose the final editing step in LR4?

I need locating the missing files within lightroom. When I click on the question mark to locate the files, it opens up a window and I click locate, and then the files are no longer there. This happens even on files that I have not moved out of lightroom. How can I make all of my files appear as they used to?

Keep getting this message on lots of my photos. I move the majority of my photos to an external hard drive for volume reasons. Even when I have the external hard drive attached I get this message. Seems I can only access photos that are on my computer hard drive. I read through all the suggestions and followed guidelines for clicking on "find in explorer." This does indeed take me to files and tells me where it thinks the file is located. And yes, I can then go to the external hard drive and find the photo. However, all it does is pull it up and does not import it into my LR program. So I still cannot work on the photo or have access to it. I am frustrated as I need to access photos for printing and uploading to stock sites. Lots of good work is sitting in my files and I cannot get to them. And on top of that, if this is the way to access the photo, then I have to do this one photo at the time.

After upgrading from lightroom 3 I'm having a problem importing my raw files. Most of the time Lightoom 4 will only recognize some of my .CR2 files and only the JPGS of the rest of them. The weird thing is that it's not my card reader. When I access the card through finder I can see all of my files. It's only in Lightroom that I can't access all the files.
It's very random about which CR2s will and will not be recognized at any give time. Sometimes it's one day only of a shoot, sometimes it's completely random photos spread across different days. I always shoot RAW+JPEG on a Canon 60D. As of now I just keep plugging and unplugging my card until all the RAWs show up for an import but this is annoying and time consuming.

I recently edited about 1000 travel shots, organized them into collections, accessed those collections many times during the vacation, had no problems. Now, returning home LR suddenly says the files are off-line or missing. I've tried to re-import the originals to repeat the edits, but am told that the pix are already in the catalogue.

I installed Lightroom 4 on my laptop a couple of months ago. Since then I’ve had to replace laptops so my computer support person backed up what I’d done on Lightroom and reinstalled the software on my new laptop (which I just received yesterday).
Under the folder section when I view my Galapagos photos, on each photo there is a statement saying “The file named ‘May 2012, Galapagos, Jude (photo #).JPG’ is offline or missing.” This statement is also on the photos in the collection section. As I’ve spent many hours in the development module I don’t want to lose what I’ve done.
I did have a '?' on the impacted folder but that's not there anymore. I had right-clicked on the '?' and attempted to locate the missing folder. The folder name is now lightroom and I can't rename it!
I imported more photos and this folder is fine.

When I downloaded my photos into Lightroom today I used today's date on the folder, but got the year wrong, 2013. After I completed editing my entire photo session, and tried to export some of the images, I realized I had the date wrong on the folder. I used my Mac's "Finder" to locate the file and change the name to 2014, with the rest of the folder name. I see now that this was a mistake and I should have probably changed the file name IN lightroom instead. Now I cannot export because I am getting the message about the files being offline or missing. I have tried to correct this by changing the folder name back to the original incorrect name (year), but this did not solve it. I clicked on the question marks and tried to "find" the folder, but that did not work either. It would be nice to be able to save my work in editing, rather than to have to start over again. In addition, Lightroom now shows several extra folders with the same folder names have been created that I didn't plan or create, purposely at least :

I use an iMac, Lion OS and Lightroom3. I store all my photo files (approx. 50,000) on a Drobo RAID system. Apple replaced my iMac HD. I connected an external 750GB G-Drive for Time Machine back-up. Since there was not sufficient memory on the G-Drive, I set the Time Maching to ignore my Picures. After moving the pictures over to the Drobo and deleting the Pictures on the iMac HD, my Lightroom files went missing. I used the Locate File option to find one of the missing files. Before I initiated this, the folder in the library showed 640 files. After locating the missing file, the folder shows 0 files. The missing file is now showing and available.

I edited some tiff files and then exported them as jpg files to a different folder. I want to go back and work on some of the original tiff files but they no longer show up in the lightroom library or develope modules even though they are still on the disk. Lightroom sees the original files in the import dialogue but will not let me reimport them either. The exported jpg files are shown in the library module. How can I work on the original tiff files.

when I open DNG files in the Develop Module, the basic tab is different than when I develop RAW/NEF files? With NEF files there are sliders for shadows, highlights and clipping but with DNG they are different - blacks, recovery, fill light. etc.. Why is this and is there a way to make the Basic tab the same for both (both like the NEF Basics tab)?

I had an internal hard drive installed in my macbook pro 15 inch in place of my optical drive in order to give me more storage space. Per apple's instructions I then copied and moved Lightroom v3.6 to the new 1 TB drive. I then deleted Lightroom from the older smaller internal drive. Now when I open Lightroom in the new drive all the photos say file is "offline or missing' and can not be used. How I can use the files in Lightroom. 99% of them were raw files from either a 12 or 18 MP camera.

Recently had my motherboard replaced under warranty and had to reinstall all programs. Had previously synched all my image files (and LR catalog files) to a separate hard drive using MemeoSync.
When I reinstalled and opened LR4.4 I found that the only folder showing was the synched drive (I:) whereas it should have been the C: drive. All synched images on the I: drive were correctly tagged but the original images on the C: drive had no keywords. I understand I can move all the files from the I: drive to the C: drive but there is another mystery I cannot solve.
I take all photos as RAW & jpeg. The files on the I: drive show the RAW files and the separate (but related) jpeg files. On the C: drive they are shown as <filename>.CR2+JPEG and I can't seem to separate them. I have tried ticking the box 'Treat JPEG files next to RAW files as separate files" without success.
So my question is, if I move all 49,000 files from one drive to the other, will the moved files retain the keyword tags AND the separated RAW/JPEG files? Also, must I delete all files from the C: drive before I move the replicated files from the I: drive? If this is successful I will then want to remove the I: folder in LR and just have the C: folder showing.

moved from PC to Mac by external hard drive. Remapped path to images. Everything is fine but when I do the folder sync command it shows me 100 % of my images as missing and the same amount as new files. There are no explanition marks in the tree view and this is the only indicator that something is wrong.
On the PC everything is fine. If I click on show file in finder for a picture finder opens with the correct file marked.
So I wonder whether I can trust that folder sync feature?
