Lightroom :: Broken Paths Due To Drive Failure
Jun 30, 2012
I'm using Light Room 1.3. on a Mac. My catalog is in my user/pictures folder, but my photos were kept in a large number of nested folders and subfolders on an external hard drive. The hard drive died. I have backups of all the photos and a fairly recent backup of the LR catalog, but when I open the catalog or the backup, all the paths to the photos have been broken. The folders appear in red in the "Folders" window of LR. I know how to relink the individual folders by using "Locate Missing Folder", but I've got hundreds of folders listed. The top level folders are not listed--there were basically three folders in which all the rest were located (sometimes several folders down). Is there anyway to re-establish the paths without doing so for each individual folder? how I might re-arrange my thousands of photos so this can't happen again. I was just about to upgrade to a new iMac and LR4, but am afraid of the same thing happening when I transfer everything to the new computer.

I'm struggling to recover status quo after an external hard drive failure. My setup is an iMac and two external drives. I keep LR on the iMac harddrive but all photos on the external drive with the second external drive for copies of the photos. My primary external drive died. I have copied the photos from the second external drive over to a new primary external drive, but I can't figure out how to restore the catalog and use this new drive in my regular workflow. When I go to the catalog file and open up the catalog, it first tries to get me to import all the photos from the new primary drive. Is that what I want to do? If my secondary drive had failed I could have figured this out easier but the primary external failure has really thrown me for a loop.

I've been using Photoshop since 1998 but my HDD recently suffered a complete failure and I've had to change the drive. Unfortunately, I don't have my original Photoshop disk, only a CS2 and CS5 upgrade disk (with both serial numbers).

I've just installed elements 12 and have added names to people, and added some keytags. Is there a way to save this information so when I back it up to a portable hard drive I have all the keytags and such if needed for putting on a new computer if for example the hard drive crashes and I lose everything.

My c drive is full and i now create and store any new textures for use in max material editor and new scenes on a new x drive which is regularly auto backed up.
Ideally i would love to be able to transfer all c models with their c textures replaced by copy x textures in one swoop without having to individually re map every single texture of every model so that old models and models i use regularly will be backed up intact. is there a way to do this ?

I moved images from my harddrive to an external drive.
I opened Lightroom.
Noticed there was a question mark by the photo folder I needed.
I synchronized the folders. Nada.
I rememebered I moved the images (first line ^^)
I re-imported the images from the external drive into Lightroom.
These images (other than one that was marked previously with a blue label) look completely untouched - completely original files - even though I spent hours working on them.
I am glad the images weren't deleted BUT re-doing 600 images will be a MAJOR FAIL if I can't figure out how to import the images with the settings / developments I did beforehand.

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.
I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited images are not on my desktop.....
I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.
I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.

I'm copying RAW files from a shoot onto my network RAID drive in a per-album folder, from where I then import into a new LR catalog (I'm using LR 4.1) on my Windows laptop for that album.
I'm finding that editing RAW files on a network drive from a wireless laptop is awfully slow (not to mention not being able to continue the work offline somewhere else), so I'd like to cache those files on my speedy SSD drive just until I'm done editing and exporting/publishing that album.
I back up my per-album catalog onto the network folder alongside the RAW files since that's my IT-managed master repository. When I'm done editing, I'd purge the cached files and just keep the catalog previews on my limited capacity SSD.
So, is there a way to tell LR to, for one/all files imported from a location (in my case a network folder), look in an alternate location for the identical files? Since I create per-album catalogs in per-album folders, there wouldn't be filename clashing. Either LR can provide this caching behavior on its own or I'd manually copy files from the network folder to a local folder and tell LR to look there first.
I don't really want to make copies of files into secondary folders within LR since then it's a hassle to merge edits on the cached copy to its master copy (I haven't done this, but I'd imagine so).

I am using lightroom 3.5RC and Mac OS 10.7.1 on a MBP and today I went to import photos from another lightroom 3.5 catalog via the Import From Catalog function and when I did that I got this message.
"Can not import from this catalog at this time. Unexpected error when creating temporary working copy of the catalog." It is not only with this catalog btw. I discovered that I can't import any catalogs into any other catalogs anymore.

Power failure and upon restart I can no longer open the catalog and was able to get it to open after this receommended page sudgestion to delete the *.lrcat.lock file. http:[url]....
Happy to have it back opening... I shut down and LR recommened a backup of my 30,000 images. After 14 hours the system was still in full lock down and I had to force a restart. Now the file is listed as not writeable and cannot be opened.
I removed the *.lrcat.lock and this will not work this time.

I am attempting to use LR (latest version) on a MacBook Pro (literally brand new) for tethered shooting from a Nikon D3s. I can get it all working but mid shoot I will get an error message about no camera connected. I have read the faq here and yes if I do restart everything I can start capturing again but thats a major disruption. I also observe (but I am new to mac so I may not be understanding what I am seeing) what appears to be another picture program attempting to start up. I shut it off and get back to LR but again I will find that the capture will stop for no apparent reason.
Is there some way to insure that there is no other picture program getting in the way of LR? Is there something else I am not doing or need to do to insure LR can reliably work in a session without constant restarts?

I have a problem with Lightroom 5. When starting Lighroom, I get the mention "Lightroom has found a failure while reading the preview cache, and will be closed". The problem stays, also when I start Lightroom again. Now I can't use Lightroom anymore and I can't reach my Lighroomphoto's.

Using Lightroom 3 - I am importing photos into folders and subfolders with titles created in the destination panel -
the titles display in the destination panel as well as in the hard drive root directory under pictures - Lightroom - my Lightroom photos - title of folder of subfolder etc. as expected.
-however-
After the photos are imported and I go back into the library to review them - clicking on Macintosh HD (I am using OS X version 10.7.3) reveals only dates the photos were taken and no root directory folder or subfolder titles. Using catalog I can see that all of the photos have been imported into the library.

Findin that Lightroom 4 and 4.1 are not importing video/movie files. Without exception every attempt made has resulted in an error.
In many cases just the first frame gets imported and converted to a low grade jpg image.
The same files import cleanly in to Aperture 3.x without difficulty.

My kids' PC's motherboard failed. I was fortunately able to access all data on the old HDD and copied it to my machine. I have to replace the motherboard, CPU and memory. Everything is working OK again.
My son's library files were all in his "My Pictures" folder of which I have a copy. What is the best way of getting everything back without the need to import everything again. I do have a copy of "Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat" - I have a copy of the complete old folder.

I have a set of precious digital images, they are actually fairly low-res scans of prints but they are irreplaceable and cannot be re-scanned.
The images exhibit the following issues and I don't know how to fix them:
1) In the LR import dialogue box they show up as "Preview unavailable for this file".
2) When I attempt to import to LR, I get the error "The following files were not imported because they could not be read".
3) If I open the file in Photoshop CS5, I get the warning "The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the embedded ICC profile is invalid. Ignoring the profile" - if I ignore, PS can open the file but of course the colour profile is missing and the images look universally awful.
Curiously however the images DO provide a preview in Windows Explorer, and if I open them with the infinitely inferior Windows Live Photo Gallery, they open correctly and the colours are as they should be.
This all leads me to believe that there is something wrong with these files which Windows is OK with but Adobe is not. Since I do not have the paper prints, cannot rescan, and do not know the workflow process applied, I have absolutely no idea whether this happened at scanning time or subsequently.
HOWEVER surely, in this day and age, there must be a tool which allows me to package the information Windows can read and put it back into the file where it should be so that Adobe can read the same thing?

I've had trouble since upgrading from LR3 to LR4 with previewing files on import. Sometimes reports no import, sometimes just shows thumbnail; sometimes fails on all photos, sometimes on just some. Happens for different file formats (ie, JPEG, raw from different cameras), different card readers, different USB ports. Canceling the import and selecting import again seems to be a workaround, but this is annoying nonetheless.

I am a relatively new user to LR and I moved a few hundred images on my Mac without realizing that it should have been done through LR. I now have a few hundred broken image links. The tutorial seems to indicate that I must re-connect them one by one. Is this true or is there a ya I can connect multiple images in folders?

I take a series of images, insert the SD card into the card reader and import the images into LR 4.3 RC.
Later after taking more images I insert the SD card into the reader, click Import in LR and it now imports all the old images again with '-2' appended to the file name.
'New Photos' is selected at the top of the Import dialog window.
LR 4.2 did not do this as far as I can recall - is this a known problem in 4.3 RC?
Happens on Windows 7 64 bit and OS X Mountain Lion.

After installing LR4.1 RC2 i have lost the link to PS6 when working with CR2 files... when i right click "edit in" PS6 opens but no document is created... when i do teh same with a DNG file all works fine... perhaps it is an issue with Camera Raw compatibility?
Both CR2 and DNG work fine with PS5.5...Obviously this is not a major issue but it is behavior that needs to be fixed...

I'm running LR5 on Windows 64 bit and have noticed that the flag accelerator keys, P, U and X don't work. When I press these in the Library module, the text pop-up tells me that the appropriate flag state is being set but the flag never actually changes state. To change the flag, I have to right click and use the "Set Flag..." context menu. This makes editing a lot slower since I can no longer move through all the shots and pick selects and rejects using the keyboard.und?
