Lightroom :: Aspect Crop Defaults To Nearest Preset LR4
Feb 26, 2013
Ok I have asked this question to adobe & still have not been addressed. My client requires a specific crop for his website.1496 x 1000 pixels..If you try to put this into the aspect ratio the image defaults to 2x3/4x6, presumably because it is so near to the 2x3 crop. This problem only started in LR3?

How do I set the crop tool in Lightroom to crop only one aspect at a time (e.g. - vertical). Right now all crops do a vertical and horizontal at once.

how I can constantly maintain the aspect ratio lock when cropping.
When I unlock it, every image after that seems to also be unlocked.
I want to set a default to have it locked.

I want to crop a whole selecton of pictures with the same aspect ratio. I shoot my pictures in 4:3 and I want to use Lightroom to crop them all for example to 16:9. So I have only to adjust the size and it's done!
I use Lightroom 4.4

This is a sudden change of behavior in Lightroom 4.4, Mac OS 10.7.5.
In the past, when I chose the crop tool, with the locked icon in the locked position, when I adjusted the crop, the crop was constrained to the original aspect ratio of the photo. Now, no matter what I do, the crop is kind of "partly" constrained. That is, I start with a vertical image, then drag the crop down so that the crop rectangle has a horizontal aspect ratio, I can drag up on the horizontal crop rectangle so that the original aspect ratio is no longer preserved. Until the aspect ratio has gone horizontal, the original aspect ratio is preserved. It doesn't matter if the lock is locked or unlocked, or whether I hold the shift key or not.
Here's an example:
at this point, the crop is still vertical, with aspect ratio constrained. It's still "as shot" and the padlock icon is locked
Here, the crop is now horizontal, but the aspect ratio is still constrained, "as shot" and still the icon is locked.
Now, things have gotten wonky. When the right edge of the crop hits the edge of the photo, it's possible to drag it upwards. The aspect ration is no longer constrained, and even though the padlock icon is locked the aspect is now "Custom"
As I said, this is new behavior which I have never seen since the version of Lightroom included the crop tool (I started at Lightroom 1.0). Like they all say "I haven't changed anything", but something obviously has changed. I don't believe this is correct behavior, or the behavior I've been used to for years. Is there any way to think this is the correct behavior?
I noticed it sometimes happens on some (most) photos, but not all, and will seemingly randomly start/stop working properly on photos that weren't/were working just minutes before.

Lightroom Crop aspect ratio lock no longer remembers the last setting. Everytime it is unlocked. Is this a bug in the new version? or is there some new way to define the default state?

I am trying to find my way, of how to submit my photos to the external lab for printing. Print module is kind of useless for me - the page setup is printer driver dependant and none of my installed printer drivers allows me to define borderless print and so LR does not allow me to set margins to zero. I think, that such desing limitation is pretty strange, especially if you just want to print to the jpeg file.
So - then I moved on to the crop tool. What a bunch of inconsistencies and design limits:
- LR seems to use some kind of catalog dependant storage, instead of just some for e.g. custom XML or other kind of list
- LR mysteriosly remember your last 5 settings. If you do a mistake, you need to reenter all of them again
- you can't even name your custom ratio settings - that's imo pretty much insufficient
- I need to set precious ratio setting for the Noritsu machine, so that I get exact resolution. Good for two of my settings, but when I try for my 13x18cm (2268 x 1625 pix), LR deletes my custom setting and marks 5x7 for me. But it is off by 10 pixels on one axis! Some strange rounding and matching was applied, but I can't it set exactly to what I need. Why does LR mess with what I want, if I select custom ratio?!
So I thought, that I might make a preset. I noticed, that when you copy setting from an image, there is a crop section. But - exactly the same dialog, which allows us to save settings, does miss a crop section. What a bummer! I found xy requests, where ppl were asking for the functionality few years ago. I am very negatively surprised, that it was yet not granted for implementation, especially as some of crop tool facilities are pretty arcane at best.
What I am now thinking about is to prepare three model images, make separate folder for them, and use them as a source for the cropping setting to copy from, but of course I would like the crop functionality to be enhanced/fixed.

It seems that with the 4.4 update a bug was introduced with the crop aspect ratio not staying locked when cropping. It changes to "custom" even though the lock remains. What do I do to maintain a standard photo size and not switch to custom? For printing purposes, I need the ratio to stay locked and dimensions standard.

A client has asked me to re-size all their photos to a 4:3 aspect. How can I add this to an existing pre-set I have for this client? I know I can choose the 4:3 aspect each time and then sync but that's 3 or 4 clicks and whereas if I can add it to an existing preset, it's no extra clicks.

I am a labtech at a community college and look after 48 mac pros in which the students use the entire creative suite. (I only mention this becuase any answers need to consider variations in system settings or photoshop settings. college students get into everything!)
But the issue is when you select the crop tool and enter a custom constraint and crop
The image size is sometimes a full 2 inches off of what you set as a crop?! I havn't run into this before
[I do know you can use the drop down box and use {size and resolution} but I want to know why it doesnt work under custom and unconstrained]

When an image is cropped using the cropping tool to a preset aspect ratio (without specifying a resolution), the resolution of the cropped image is different than the original. I'd like to be able to understand exactly how this new resolution is determined and be able to calculate it myself. The help section of the software just says, "If you use a preset size, the resolution changes to fit the preset." But I'd like to know the details of how the resolution changes.
How the resolution of the cropped image is determined in Photoshop Elements?

Is there a good fast way to use Photoshop CS6's crop tool to crop to a particular width/height without having to go through the Size and Resolution dropdown?
With the crop tool selected, if I punch "10" and "50" into the two boxes next to Unconstrained, then Photoshop CS6 doesn't interpret this as 10pc wide by 50pc high. Instead, for a landscape-format photo it comes out as a 50x10 crop, and for a portrait image it comes out as 10x50.
Selecting "Size and Resolution" from the crop dropdown appears to solve this, but it is slower, since you have to dance through a modal dialog box. Is there a way to get the CS5-like behavior from the crop tool? Use Classic Mode does not appear to affect this.

Is there a simple way to constrain a crop to a certain aspect ratio? I have a bunch of cropping to do and the results all need to be 5:3. It's not that difficult to use the info palette and get the aspect ratio right but it would be way quicker if I could just constrain the crop tool to those proportions.

As an ex Photoshop user, there is a facility missing from PDN (or at least I can't find it!)
In Photoshop there was a tool which allowed me to type in a width and a height and a unit of measurement, for instance, 6, 4 and inches which would give me a 6x4 ratio image. I could then drag a rectangle across my image, and the crop box would remain in the correct ratio, making for very easy cropping when preparing images to be printed.
Is there a similar way in PDN to achieve this?

I have images of varying sizes that I need to all be cropped to a specific aspect ratio in the center of the image and extending either to the side edges or the top and bottom depending on using the maximum portion of the image. How do you set up an action to do this.
If I were to do this by hand, I would use the rectangle marquee, change to fixed ratio, and drag from one edge to the other. They move the selection to the center (as best I could) . Then do Image<Crop?
But I need to automate this process and have have it exactly positioned in the center. Can this be automated in an action? If so, how?
FYI, I have CS5 (and CS6). I am comfortable using the image processor. So as long as I have an action set up, I can process all of my images using the image processor. I also have lightroom 4 if there is some way to do it there.

how to create an action or script that could take all images in a folder and crop them to an aspect ratio of 16:9 and then resize them to 640x360?
I can't just change the pixels to 640x360 because that would distort the images as the current aspect ratios are not 16:9.

I have a 5" x 7" (landscape style) image that I want to crop in Elements 9. I'm using the Guided mode on the Edit tab of the program. When I use the pulldown menu and I see the 5 x 7 crop box size that I want to use, I click it. But the crop window that appears, is 7 x 5 (portrait mode) rather than 5 x 7 landscape mode. I can work around this by changing my crop box size selection on the pulldown menu to No Restriction, but I'm then just guessing that I'll get precisely the 5 x 7 ratio that I want. How can I change the crop box from portrait style to landscape style so that I can crop my image 5 x 7 rather than 7 x 5?

I'm new to lightroom and heres what happened.
I edited a batch of photos, exported them and .xmp files were created in Lightroom Export folder.
Later copied the .xmp files out of the Export and and pasted them into the main folder of the cr2 files.
When I opened LR again, there was a prompt and I messed with it. The result now is that the developed settings are the defaults instead of the unedited/tweaked photos.

I'm having problems printing from Lightroom. I'm printing on a Kodak ESP C315 with Epson (not Kodak) premium quality paper. As per Kodak's instructions, I turned advanced dot placement mode off. The problem is - even after I've done this and set it as a default in the printer control panel (I'm using Windows 7 pro, by the way), Lightroom insists on turning it back on. Because I can print using the same settings perfectly happily from Photoshop.

I upgrade to lightroom 5 from lightroom 3. Now all of the develop defaults are "0" for new imported images. In lightroom 3, it would apply default settings at import. In addition, all of my presets are not adjusting exposure/blacks/whites etc like they used to. I am using a Canon XSi. Do I just have something unchecked somewhere?
