Lightroom :: 3 - Can Missing (deleted) Photos Be Restored From Previews?
Jul 6, 2012
The original files are gone, deleted accidentally. But my LR3 catalog still has full size previews of all of them. Is there any way to convert those previews into photo files (dng or jpg would be fine)?
It seems like this should be possible - I can see the images right there on my screen, so they can't be gone for good!
The deleted photos comprise an entire day in Venice, Italy, and had already been sorted into keepers. Even if I could only get a medium sized jpeg, it'd be better than nothing at all.
I had to restore images I deleted off my SD card and when I uploaded them into LR they appear whole in the scroller at the bottom but when clicked on, some have large chunks of the image missing. Is it possible to restore the WHOLE image?
I copied photo folders from my hard drive to lightroom 4 and edited them but then accidentally removed these folders from lightroom. I then imported these folders again into lightroom but all the edits I made orginally in lightroom don't show up for the individual photo's.
I backed up the Lightroom catalogue regularily. Is there any way I can reattach these edits to their respective photos'. There is lot of photo's involved.
Is it possible to make preview photos that have the exclamation mark ( ! ) top right - into low res jpegs? I seem to have accidently deleted the RAW files before exporting.. not sure how this happened as I don't recall doing it. They are not on my external hard drive and sadly not on my memory card either.
I thought I was permanently deleting just one photo, but apparently I must have had 30 photos selected. Now they are all gone. Not in my recycle bin or anything. Can I recover them?
I have a batch of photos that were imported in Lr, edited, and exported with a watermark. I then deleted the original file. Well, the pictures still show up in my photo strip in Lr, but it won't let me export it because it's saying the "file is missing or offline". I know I deleted these photos and have no way of retrieving them. Question is: Since I can still view them in Lightroom, is there any way to export them now? Even if I have to open in another program and save them, I don't care. I just need these photos w/o the watermark.
I unfortunatly deleted some important photos (I don't know how and I don't know why they dot appear on my backups ...) but there preview are still available in lightroom so that means they are still stored somewhere so is there a way to extract these previews ??
Using LR4 (not 4.1) and Win7 Home Premium. Catalog had been upgraded from LR3 and LR4 catalog was working fine until now. I've been using LR since the beginning. Two problems, probably related. 106K photos over two drives, almost 3Tb.
At the catalog level, there are no previews. Normally previews of all 106K photos would be displayed. Message is "Click the "import" button to begin." Filter function does not work Message: "No photos match the filter".At the drive level, there are no previews. Message is "No photos in selected folder" Filter function does not work Message: "No photos match the filter". At the folder level, everything is fine, except two folders give the same message "No photos in selected folder" Filter function does not work in these two folders: Message: "No photos match the filter" 14K photos between the two bad folders. Dozens, hundreds, of other folders and subfolders are fine. Filter function works fine at folder and subfolder level. Collections are fine, including photos in the two folders giving the mesage "No photos in selected folder"
Tried to import the missing folders. Won't import because they're already in the catalog. Won't import even if I uncheck "Don't import suspected duplicates". Exported as a catalog one of the "No photos in selected folder" folders. It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc. I edited a few photos with no problems. Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing. But they seem to be there anyway.Deleted the folder from the catalog and imported from catalog the working folder catalog that I just created. Exported as a catalog the other "No photos in selected folder" folder. Same result as the first bad folder. I.e. It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc. Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing. But they seem to be there anyway. Haven't done anything with this second folder catalog. Intriguing, the same message about missing previews. The actual files and *.xmp files are in the bad folders.
I have more than ten thousand photos on an external harddisk. When I travel I prefer to leave the external harddisk at home and just use the previews of Lightroom. However, only some photos display well without the attached harddisk. The rest are very pixelated.
Is there any way to make sure all photos have properly cached previews?
(I'm fairly new to trying to using Lightroom for anything useful, even though I have played with it every now and then for several years. Tools I know better are Aperture and Photoshop and ACR.)
I observed that when photos are deleted while in a smart preview collection the photos are not removed from the smart preview collection. Resulting over time in a large smart preview file with unused photos, consuming your hard drive space.
It is therefor important only to delete photos when they are first discarded from the smart preview catalog.
When eventually photos are removed while they were available in the smart preview catalog the work around to delete them is to locate the catalog named: "Lightroom 5 Catalog Smart Previews.lrdata" and to open it with Lightroom. When opened you can select the photos and remove them. After that you can remove the folder from your Lightroom folders and the file itself will consist of only 0 bytes.
It would maybe a good idea that removing photos automatically would discard them from the smart preview.
I have deleted photos from Lightroom 4 by choosing the 'remove from disk' option. I never want to see them again so want them to go into the iMac Trash. However they are still in the folder where the original RAW files are on my desktop. does the delete process take a while to complete?
I recently downloaded Lightroom 3 (currently have L2 version) and upgraded to do a 30 day trial version. As I finished working on some new pictures and started working on a slideshow the application quit and asked me if I wanted to upgrade again, as I did that when the application started again the folder of the images I was working on was not there any more. How can I retrieve this again? Did I loose the images and the work I did on them?
I have Lightroom 5 and a Mac computer..Uploaded photos via card reader to Computer.Lightroom Opened but would not show previews. - said show source - would not open the previews on the imported photos
When I tried to activate the source to upload my photos - all when blank after 1 second of showing information (Photos) that were the previews. - then went blank.I stopped the process and ejected the card correctly through the finder. Thought I would try importing via image capture.
This was also a problem as the previews only showed as a flash of a second.I also notice that for some reason Lightroom 4 keeps on opening when importing photos and not Lightroom 5 - Though Lightroom 5 opens up when I edit other photos.
Some time ago I had uploaded one collection of photos through Flickr photostream.
Tonight I set up a second collection to upload. I edited the connection to change from "Public" to "Family and Friends" for this upload. It asked me whether to change previous photo permissions or not. At first I said yes. Then I thought it over, especially after a popup box told me that all ratings and comments would be deleted since I had a free Flickr account. Given that, I decided not to change them. So I went into the Flickr photostream window in LR4 (I have not yet published) and when I saw all the previous photos there to be republished, I selected them and deleted them, to avoid having them re-uploaded.
Unfortunately, it didn't have that effect. It put them in a group called "Deleted photos to Remove." I don't want them removed from Flickr. But I can't seem to get them out of this category so I can publish the new photos without removing them. How do I get rid of these images from this window so they won't be removed from Flickr when I upload the new images?
I've recently moved from iPhoto and already had a hard time figuring out how to replicate the "hidden" photos and how not to display them in lists etc. by default.
Now I'm hanging on another thing I simply couldn't find in LR4 yet but believe it must be there - at least it would be a no-brainer to implement this if I were a programmer of LR.
The feature I'm talking about is the user-definable preview picture for each "event" in iPhoto.
In LR, in the Library module, there is this folder selection menu on the left-hand panel. Now when I hover all the folders shown there the picture in the Navigator changes to resemble the respective first picture in each of the folders.
What I want to do is select a different "preview" picture for each folder and save this setting inside the Lightroom catalog I'm currently in.
How do I accomplish that - or is it impossible with the current version of Lightroom?
I would like to take my existing photo's on an internal drive and move them to an external drive. I would like to leave my catalogue where it is on my internal drive. I would then like to use smart previews to allow me to edit my photo's with or without the external drive connected and have the photo's automatically sync'd when the external drive is re-connected.
Now that Lightroom 5 is out. Is there a quick way to build smart previews for all the photos that are in the existing libraries? And is it recommeded to build them for all photos. Does it essentially save two files?
Is there any way to export LR photosdirectly from LR if the original file has been deleted from Hardrive. If not, can the image from LR somehow still be printed as photos and if so how?
LR states that my photos are missing, but none of my photographs seem to be missing, ie, there are no question marks and all photos can be found, edited, and exported in the normal fashion.
When I emptied my MAC desktop trash, it somehow deleted my entire iphoto. I can still see all of my edited versions of my photos in LR, but it says they are missing. Because my trash was emptied, it says it can't find them anywhere. Is there ANY way to get them straight from LR. I already went to an outside source to retrieve and couldn't get good files, BUT i can see them clear as day on my LR.
My 2006 folder w/ 1,000+ photos was accidently put into the 2007 folder. I can view the 2007 photos but the 2006 photos are missing. I can view the date the photo was taken, with the number of pictures, along with a question mark.
Can you search for missing photos from within a folder? I know there's the command that says "find all missing photos" but that delivers results for the entire catalog. I'd like to see the missing photos from just one folder and wonder if that's possible.
Yesterday, all of my photos were on my laptop. Today, I get the message that all of 2013, including the photos I uploaded today, are "offline or missing".
