Illustrator :: UI Of Gradient Gets Much Larger
May 6, 2013
I've used the Gradient Tool many, many times and I just now noticed this. I don't know if it's supposed to do this or not but I don't ever remember this happening before. As you can see when I use the linear setting and I change the angle to anything other than 0, the UI of the gradient gets much larger. This makes it difficult to edit especially when the angle is set to something like 45 degrees. The sliders are almost unreachable.

First I pick out a foreground color, then a bg color. Now there is already a nice gradient in the blend box below the toolbox. Is there any way I can just save that? It's all I really need but in a larger size. I could just take a screen shot of it and then edit that with Gimp, but it seems like there must be a way of doing that within gimp.

I've been working on this project in Illustrator for a day or two now. All of a sudden, all objects, both preexisting and newly created, have a very large purple bounding box.
In order to alter the size of the object, I have to find the corner of the large bounding box. I have a feeling it may be a setting I hit as this began happening after I was fiddling around with adding more artboards.

When I create a new file in AI CS 6, the artboard is larger than requested size, which shows up as a box within the too-big artboard. For example, when I create a new file, I set the artboard size menu to 1200 pixels wide by 750 pixels high, but the artboard created is about 6,000 pixels high and wide, with a black outline of the 1200 x 750 artboard that I tried to create. The actual artboard is much larger than the white area; I just cropped most of it in my photo software to show it here. What setting in the preferences or other menus fixes this problem? I didn't have it until today, so something got set incorrectly somewhere. I usually just see the 1200 x 750 white artboard against the dark background. It also seems to be happening now when I simply open an existing file. The artboard has suddenly increased to an enormous size.

Sometimes I have to subtract some outlined text from a larger shape. Usually I just select the shape, and the text group, and execute a compound path. Works fine.
Occasionally, this method is not so convenient If I need to knock out additional outlined text into an object that has already been compounded with some other elements. For this, I use the Shape Tool, minus-ing out the additional text,
What I've noticed is that as I do this, the process gets slower and slower as each path is minus'd out with the Shape Tool. Eventually it can take as long a minute or more to remove more areas. Then I discovered something. I uncompounded the final result to discover that the Shape Tool creates hundreds and hundreds of duplicate paths. And very specific duplicates at that. Here is what I discovered:
I can only draw the conclusion that there is something seriously wrong with this tool. Surely all those extra path copies hidden within the resulting compound path can't be right.

I have something going on when I export from Illustrator as a PSD using the artboard. It ends up with a line of transparency around the edges, and is larger than the size of the art exported. It gains about .01 inch around the edges, and when I use 'trim transparent pixels' in Photoshop, it trims it down so it has only gained .07 inches around the edges, but doesn't lose the last line of pixels that are semi-transparent. I am using a script that exports it, then re-imports it and places it in the Illustrator file, effectively swapping the vector for raster. It's part of a larger process I have no control of, so the process is not something I can change, otherwise I wouldn't do that.
Why is it exporting with this line of transparency on the edges? It's causing white lines to show up in the file that it gets reimported to. Until now it was ok because it only shows in the bleed, which gets trimmed off. From now on, though, this process is supposed to be used for non-bleed items, and the white lines are showing up.

I'm trying to use Smart Guides to align a small arc to a corner so I can merge it into a larger shape. Well, I've grabbed my arc on one of the anchor points and I drag it to the larger shape's path but no snapping, no "path" or "intersection" labels show up. I've got all the options for Smart Guides checked off and I've got Snap to Point enabled but still no luck. It makes precise alignment a guessing game.

I have CS5. The bugs and broken features in AICS6, make it unusable in my workflow.
I am specifically concerned about the inability to drag global color swatches from the color panel to Gradient stops in the Gradient Panel. I use this method to update a gradient color because I find it MUCH faster than option-dragging to duplicate a stop color, then deleting the unused stop. Since I do this constantly, I find using CS6 very tedious.

I've encountered a problem when using simple gradients in Illustrator CS6 v v16.0 on the Creative Cloud. My gradients are not smooth, you can see vertical/horizontal delineations in color when in linear mode, and circular delineations when in radial mode. This seemed strange to me since this is vector based. The attached picture is an example of this problem, it's 18x24 at 300dpi. It also persists when I export/save the image. This problem is also present in Photoshop.

i'm in illustrator cs3, and even tho my stops in my gradeint are true black (it even shows true black on the stops), in the gradient itself, it's that horrible cmyk grey.
when trying to use blending modes and masks because it treats what's supposed to be black like the grey I'm getting, so things always look a little off. My document's in RGB mode and i havent found any other fixes...

The logo is 2 objects which overlap at 2 points. The trick is that I want point A on object A to be on top of object B and point B on object B to be on top of object A. For the visual ones of us; make a Vulcan sign out of both hands, place the V's together so that the vertexes touch and then place both your palms flat. Your index and middle finger will be on top and also your pinky and ring finger of the other hand will be on top.
I can get this to work by making a 3rd layer (cutting the fingers off one hand) and placing them directly, but the objects are filled with a gradient and I cannot get the gradient of the hand to match correctly with the severed fingers. Compound paths will let me accomplish the correct gradient, but it screws up the layers.
Is there any way to have 2 objects on two different layers have the same (flowing, uninterupted) gradient? Unfortunately, a "close" color match isn't enough as when printed out, it's very obvious.

When printing a vector illustration in PDF format, my gradients that fade to 0% over a surface aren't coming out right. The gradient appears like a box with a hard edge, rather than fading away. It looks like this when viewing the file , but when printed I am getting this . (don't mind the color, it is a bad quality photo)
I am using an HP z5200 postscript printer.

I can't get the Gradient Annotator to show up. I select a shape w/a gradient, hit "G" nothing! I check under view and select "Show Gradient Annotator" nothing! I can use the gradient tool and pull a gradient and the annotator shows up during the action, but then dissappears when I'm done. Sometimes I can get it to show up if I back my view all the way out so I can see my entire artboard, but then when I zoomin closer it dissappears again. How can I get the Annotator to always show up when I use the tool. ( Mac-OS-10.8.5, Ai-CS 6)

I just dicovered the gradient stroke feature in illustrator CS6, the problem now is I can't get out of it. I am simply trying to apply a gradient within a shape, and it keeps only applying it to the stroke. If I try to add a gradient to a path that doesn't have a stroke, it will automaticallly add a stroke.
