I placed and traced a PS doc (with transparent background) in AI..... then I saved it as an AI file, opened it in Photoshop, and the background was white. Result was the same whether I saved it flattened or with layers as objects. How do I do this and maintain transparency? It's probably something obvious....
(I'm using CS 5 on a turn of the century Mac.)
I am exporting a table - save from Excel to PDF. Open in AI and export to EMF. The word 'Difficult' in one column comes out 'Dif cult' in every occurance. It worked with a different table one time last week but now happens with every table I attempt to export. I even went to an extra step of saving the PDF to AI and then exporting to EMF. Same results.

*) Save the image (I checked the 3rd (gamma), the 5th (resolution) and the 6th (time) checkbox).
When I now open the saved image in a different viewer (I use the picasa viewer because this viewer shows the transparent areas nicely), the image is still transparent.
*) Delete the rest of the small green triangle on the right.
*) Save the image.
When you now open it in a different viewer, then suddenly the background isn't transparent anymore. (It's then like the 2nd attached pic - Fail.png)
I used to export layers by deleteing the ones I didn't want, then exporting as an illustrator file, then undoing all the layer deletions.
Recently I had to switch up so that I call another plugin which inserts information into the file I'm working on. Then that plugin sends control back to the original to do all the ai file exporting I mentioned above.
Somehow after I get controll back I cannot undo the layer deletions. Does it have something to do with the "nested plugins" notes in the contexts sections of the undo documentation.
I have to confess I don't fully understand these "contexts". Also if there's another way to export a layer of a file other than deleting all the other ones.
I use LR4 for printing books via Blurb and have done a few that have turned out great. However I have a problem and can't find an answer.
I often want to export the book to PDF to share online but when I export it separates the cover from the book which spoils the whole effect.
Is there a way to export both book and cover as one single PDF?
I have greenscreen footage, where a green screen was put on a window with tracking markers. A person is moving in front of it, so you can see the reflection. If I just key it and put a garbage mask around it, I can get rid of the green and the tracking markers, but how can i get the reflections back now? Cause if I just screen the original desaturated part back on, you can still see the tracking markers.... Is the only way to first paint over the markers and then screen it back on, or is there another way? I'm on Smoke for mac 2012.

Is there supposed to be a drop down list for the transparency property? Once I override an objects transparency to say 50 how do I change it back to ByLayer? Do I really have to just type "ByLayer"?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've imported a png of a simple black drawing on a man (Like you get on a toilet door) with a transparent background and tried to trace it to a vector but I can not get rid of the white background. i've tried it as a jpeg to see if the trace command would generate two layers one for the main drawing and one for the background that I could delete, but it di dnot. I tried setting the Trace fuction to just outline but that did nto work either.

Why does my text lose its sentence structure when I save my file as an ai, PDF, or EPS and then bring that file back into Illustrator? I've set numerous bodies of text using the text box and also without the text box. It doesn't matter. I will bring that same document back into Illustrator and my full sentences will be chopped up. A full line of text, for instance, while keeping its format, will become fragmented once it's been dropped back into Illustrator. It's very frustrating. If I need to add a character to a fragmented sentence, it will shift the part of that sentence over that I'm adjusting, but other parts will not move so now I'm typing a letter over another letter.
I can make a text box and copy all my text, then paste it into that text box and all the sentences become connected again but I lose the formatting in the process. BUT, again, once that document is saved and brought back into AI, the sentences will again be fragmented.
We have adobe design suite installed in MAC OSX 10.7 and this crashes often and also deletes the data. Enclosed is the snapshot of the error.

Moreover, on some computers to export certain actions randomly do not work.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen pasting between illustrator documents all formatting is lost and images do not move over.example, working on a new flyer, I often borrow from existing flyers since copy and pricing is good, just usually making flyers that have different combinations of products etc.
So I select some text boxes and images from one illustrator document, control copy and then try to control v into another illustrator document and all that gets pasted is the text which is formulated. You'd think i had copied and pasted something from notepad.
The problem does not happen 100% of the time, but it's like 50/50 it seems.Sometimes when the problem occurs, I'll spam control c a few times and then control v will paste as you'd expect. But the problem occurs whether I use control c, or edit copy.I'm using CS3..It even happens when I try to cut and paste within the same document.
How do I use custom when tracing an image? It doesnt higlight when i roll over it and wont let me use it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedImport a photo image which is, for example, 100px high by 500px long. Now apply a simple fade transparency from the left edge to 100% transparent 100px in from the left edge (i.e. 400px of the image's length is now 'invisible').
Export this as a png and then import this png. It will still be 100 x 500 - can you tell Xara export the image truncated down just the 'visible' portion (i.e. 100 x 100)?
I've used image trace to trace the outline of a street grid and expanded the trace into paths. However, after doing so, I realized I wanted the streets a bit thicker, so I increased the stroke value.
Is there a way to adjust the old paths to match the new outline? I tried saving it as a .jpg and retracing but the quality was subpar. Any way to "redo" the trace in the original file, or somehow tell Illustrator to move the paths to match the increased stroke? I need them to coincide once more with the edges of the streets. URL...
In CS5 there was an option to use the Live Paint Bucket on a newly traced image and there were also gap options to close gaps when doing this. I do not see these options in CS6. Where are they?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use Illustrator CC.I have made a custom Image Tracing Preset and want to use it on a folder containing a sequence of pictures I want all to vectorize automatically. Programming an Action isn't an option as the Action recorder doesn't record which tracing preset is used for image tracing. I found I can use the pre-installed Image Tracing Script [URL] in which I only need to specify the correct number of the Image Tracing Preset. And that became a big problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a pen sketch scanned with resolution ~ 7000x5000px 300DPI. When I'm trying to trace the whole image with Illustrator CS6 into b/w, I am losing details overall. Example is on the left side. It's just part of the image.
However, when I tried to isolate a couple small raster pictures from the big one and trace them separately, I got pretty good results comparing to tracing a whole picture. The isolated images are with resolution ~700x800px 300DPI.
The problem is that I can't isolate all elements in sketch then combine after tracing, it's hell lot of work. So my hope is that there is some technique of tracing big images.
i want to do some scanning of drawings of rubble masonry wall in section export it as a dwg file in autocad, and then work and modify in autocad. However when i use the live trace command, the trace is wrongly done. for example there is a straight line having thickness 2 mm.
illustrator traces it as a rectangle having a width 2 mm. what should i do so that a closed circle sketched on a paper scanned into illustrator is traced as a single circle by recognizing the centre of the sketched path rather than 2 concentric circles placed apart at a distance equal to the thickness of my real life graphite pencil .?
I have a JPG file with a colored design on a white background. I'd like to extract the design without the background and be able to use it as an .ai file. I tried tracing it and then expanding it, but when I copy the design and place it on a different background, the white background comes with it. How can I isolate just the design?

I am working on a project, and I have finished tracing everything. I am now ready to color in the objects, but when I fill the shape with color, it does not work. My layer is not locked.

I would like to trace this image and I was wondering what the best way is to do that. As you can see I made a small start and not sure if that's the right way to go.
You probably think "but come on, there are many places where this is explained...". And so it is, but it doesn't work anyways.
I have an image with transparent areas. I have an alpha channel. When I save the file, I do use the "Save colour values from transparent pixels" for png and for gif I check "Interlace" option.
I have done the rigth click -> colour to alpha. What happens when I do this is that some white parts become black.
Things I have noted, perhaps that doesn't matter , is that when checking the alpha channel in the layer tool, it is white and not transparent.

One last thing, I did copy the image from ConeptDraw (visio-alike application on Mac) before trying to save it with transparency.
This is driving me nuts, I have struggled for hours. I have done it before (way back), but something is different now.
Basically, I am trying to use an alpha layer/channel to export a picture that is transparent except for a grass clump that is colored green over the alpha layer. So the picture looks like a solid green rectangle, but is actually a green blade of grass.
Problem is, I cannot get the alpha layer to work. I can't follow the tutorial as it is in photoshop, and random videos on-line haven't worked.

I'm doing a LOT of tracing of raster files on illustrator. After using the image trace function to vectorize a raster file, I further edit the vector. I select the vector file, place the raster file I will trace from on top, and begin to erase sections of the vector that don't line up with the raster file. The problem I'm encountering is that I have to hide the raster layer (the one I'm tracing from) each time I want to add (paint) to the vector. Is there a way I can paint on the vector without hiding (or effecting) the topmost raster layer?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have always flattened everything out of CDR whenever there is any transparencies involved, this works fine, you just have to deal with large bitmaps. Now in recent discussions some respected contributors have touted using the X3 pdf setting with Compatibility set to Ver9. That works, transparencies print without the yellow box ....fine... but.
I design with CMYK colours ( I know.. BIG discussion that has been addressed many times) and use RGB images (because they are usually client supplied or our Stock site only supplies RGB).
My problem is in my PDF settings I have everything set to export as Native which works well on the Roland using Max Impact and even if I set compatibility to PDF Ver 9 transparency will still have the yellow box.
To get transparencies to work without flattening, everything has to be exported as CMYK and as you know RGB blue goes purple when you do this and the RGB images just don't look as good.Is there a way to get transparency to work in a PDF with exporting everything as Native and using PDF Ver 9?
I'm using Illustrator CC although I haven't tried doing this in earlier versions. When I copy text that has a drop shadow made with "effect/stylize/drop shadow" the drop shadow is editable from the Appearance pallet only in the original document. In the pasted document the drop shadow is there but does not show up in the Appearance pallet so I can't edit it. It shows up on a different layer so I can delete it but then I have to create an editable shadow from scratch on the new document. When I copy objects that are not text with drop shadow, the editiability remains, but it doesn't seem to work with text unless I create outlines of the type and then I lose the editability of the text. Is there any way to copy drop shadows that are editable on text?

With vector magic it works always good to smooth with one click the curves full of pixels into a pixel free curve with clear boundary.
I had a look into the old discussion on this forum and found few things in the discussion "raster image .gif". I would like to get an addon that would be a 1 time buying and cheaper as a complete new investment into a whole soft like vector magic.
