Okay I'm having a serious issue with the Symbols Sprayers Tool. Whenever I spray Symbols on the screen they keep on moving apart from each other. I want to continuously spray a Symbol on the screen and have them stick in one spot, not continuously move apart. As a result of this, I have to keep on locking one Symbol on one layer, then making another Symbol on another layer and lock it, and continue in that pattern. Is there anyway to stop the Symbols from moving?
Whenever I use the text tool the cursor and symbols and so on are always on the left and when I try and use a symbol they are put at the start of whatever I type.
- Reset Text tool. - Make sure type preference is on default.
I can't insert certain symbols with the text tool. When I type "&" it inserts a "/" and when I type "/" it inserts a "-". I know for a fact it's not my keyboard because it works in any other text editor or text field. Is this just some new weird setting in photoshop cs6?
I'm having trouble with getting quotation marks to display correctly, they look like 2 stacked >> symbols. They change slightly depending on what font I'm using, but they all ride at the base of the text. I cannot acheive normal looking curly or straight quotes at all.
I have tried switching smart quotes on and off in the preferences, restarting, etc. I've noticed this problem in the past, but I thought it was the font I was using. The same thing happens with Times New Roman. I'm running an up to date version of PSextended CS5, 64bit on win 7 64.
When working in a drawing, I don't see a selection for weld symbols in Annotate - Symbols. Are they not available in LT? Is there something I need to do to activate them?
Alright I am trying to create a shape made up of tons of instances of a symbol (best example of what I am trying to achieve is here )
I hoped I could just use draw inside mode and the symbol sprayer however I am not able to ensure the instances don't colide and that they actually completely fit inside the shape without being cut off.
I am obviously going about this the wrong way but have searched for unsuccessfully for any instruction on how this could be achieved.
I can use the sprayer to make a set of symbols. And then I can break a link between the set and the symbol. Can I recover/make the link again? Not Ctrl+Z immediately after vrealing the link. Imagine that I break the link, them use some tools, move some objects (so, I can not use Ctrl+Z, because I will lose those changes) and then select the set again and ... what? I do not see any way to bind it to the symbol again.
I'm trying to put an arrow into my picture, but all the edges/corners are rounded. How do I sharpen them? I figured I could use live trace for this, but that didn't work.
My issue is when I open an .eps, (any .eps because I tried it with a multitude of files), and I try to drag a path into the symbols panel then "save symbol library" Illustrator immediately crashes. It doesn't matter if its just one symbol or multiple symbols.
This is the problem details:

I need to place a series of symbols in a document in Illustrator CS3... some symbols have multiple instances, some have only one... i need to be able to refer to them by name... right now, i can only seem to place them using this syntax...
make new symbol item in document 1 with properties {symbol:symbol 1 of document 1}
i'd like to use something like this...
make new symbol item in document 1 with properties {symbol:{name:"Text Tag"}
i've tried different syntax after the "symbol" property, but i can't seem to find what works, if there's anything that actually works...
I have Illustrator files of some fairly complicated schematics that I will be bringing in to Flash. The layers are already well organized and named so I would like to select particular layers, hit a "create symbols" button and have all of the selected layers turned into separate symbols that have the same name as their layer name. I would even be willing to code something to do this but I can't find any information about how it can be done.
I know that I can import an Illustrator file into Flash and select layers that I can then make into movie clips but again, I have to manually select the layer, tell it to be a movie clip and then give it an instance name. I would be happy to try to automate that process as well but haven't found any info on how it can be done either.
how I can batch create symbols from my existing layers?
how to change the default square data points in a line graph. When I try to got to Object>Graph>Marker it is greyed out. When I click on a circle symbol and then try to go to Object>Graph>Design, it is greyed out. I am so frustrated trying to do the simplest things in this program. The online tutorials on how to make graphs do not seem to explain the simplest of tasks, only the difficult.
How I can place all my symbols at one time in the File and on there on layers? is this possible?
The only dialog box i could find is in the corner of the symbols palette is "Place symbol"... I tried to create an action but it wont go to the next symbol.
I have a page of clipart symbols. Illustrator recognizes that they're all separate... but how can I convert them in a batch process to individual symbols?
How do you edit the colors of the individual elements of symbols? Is there a way to do any editing once the objects have been added as a group as a symbol?
Place fxg images in illustrator using applescript or actionscript? We spent a ton of time trying to troubleshoot it today and counldnt figure out why, but we couldnt seem to place them on a page. That and symbol scripting has been pretty tough to find any reference or examples of scripts.
I need an Illustrator script for distribute a collection of diferent symbols along a path. The symbols should be distributed from the beginning to end of path and separated a proportional space each other. Additionally each symbol should be rotated pointing to a "look at" object.
Please look at the attached image for further info.
When I open up a CS3 file with my CS5 version I get this error.
"Illustrator now honers 9 -slice scaling of symbols. Any scaling done on symbol instance with 9-slice scaling option in legacy version will look different now. Do you want to retain the 9-sclice scaling option for symbols?"
I click on the yes button. But what does this all mean?
When I do enter in this file it is distorted. How do I change the legacy so that it will reflect the origional file.
I've created a series of images utilizing symbols.
Basically the images are of a box. Each side of the box has different content.
I create the side content flat with an encompassing rectangle. Drag all this to the Symbol Panel to create a symbol (no 9-slice no align to grid set). I then take a symbol instance and use Object > Envelope Distort > Apply with Mesh - 1 row, 1 column and proceed to transform the symbol into position on the packaging.
This works.
I can easily double-click the symbol and edit the side of the package with no problem. Exit symbol editing mode and the symbol instance(s) update. Perfect.
Until.....
I close the file. Return to it 12-18 hours later and open it to see that visually my symbols are no longer positioned correctly. I click, the symbol/emvelope is still in the correct position, but the preview on screen shows no transformation. This incorrect visual appearnce translates to print and save for web as well. So it's more than simply an inaccurate preview. The symbol has actually broken out of its container incorrectly.
To explain further.
When I save the file it looks like this:
The grey box indicates the symbol/envelope bounding area.
When I reopen the file the next day it looks like this:
The symbol/envelope is still in the correct position but the symbol contents are completely incorrect. There seems no way to reset the symbol other than to delete what's there and redo the transformations.
There is nothing overly complicated about the artwork within the symbol. It's all text or line art, no effects or transformations within the symbol itself.
Is there a way to use symbol libraries so that editing 1 symbol will ripple through and change several .ai files?
Our office has several people, working on several .ai files which all share symbols in common. We all know how to edit a local symbol and have it ripple through 1 document and change the artboards. We know how to save a library of symbols to share with others in the office. What we don't know is how to edit a symbol in that library and have it update everwhere.
If we can improve our process we can turn 1 day of work into 1 minute. I wish it worked like links in InDesign.
When memory errors are occuring, which is the preferred method for repetitive objects: placing linked images or placing symbol instances? I'm using Windows XP and Illustrator CS5. I'm considering whether to create symbols for several of the often recurring placed images.
