Illustrator :: Sluggish Performance On A Certain Drawing

Jul 11, 2013

One of my co-workers has drawn a shoe (I work in the clothing-business) and is experience huge performance issues on that specific file. We've tried in both CS5.5 and CS6 with no difference.

When I try to rasterize the drawing, Illustrator stops responding. I've tried Simplifying and Cleaning up the paths, but with no lucks. It's not a particularely advanced file, but there seems to be a LOT of paths.

According to the "Document info"-window, there's 110,823 paths (67 open). On another drawing of a shoe (which has some similarities in looks etc.) there's only 86 paths (10 open).

How can I reduce the number of paths? And shouldn't I be able to see all 110,823 paths in the drawing?

I'm having major slowdown after an AutoCAD drawing import. I have never had this much slowdown in 3ds Max, even with very complex 3D scenes.

I've tried switching graphic renderers with no luck. I'm working from a textbook and cannot proceed without this step.

Illustrator :: File Size And Performance Using PDFs From CAD

Aug 1, 2013

Using Illustrator CS5.5, I'm trying to open and use floor plan PDFs originally created from AutoCAD, Revit, etc. The files contain detailed vector artwork, but the file sizes and RAM/CPU usage I'm seeing don't seem to correspond to the information in the file. I open a 2MB floor plan PDF and when I save as Illustrator, it becomes 20MB. It takes 2GB of RAM to open that file.

I've checked for masks and transparencies, but can't figure out what's making these so difficult to work with. Are there attributes I'm not checking that could be slowing things down?

Illustrator Scripting :: Can Low Performance Of CreateOutline() Be Increased?

Feb 8, 2012

I wrote a little Script converting an Array of Strings to outlines for SVG export. I however find the results of createOutline() extremely unsatisfactory, especially when compared to the results of doing the job "manually" (Right click > create outlines).

Right click, "Create Outlines"
createOutline() from Script

From first sight this seems like an issue with conversion accuracy set too low, however I wasn't able to locate a parameter to change the same.

How to achieve the look of the top image from within a script.

Illustrator :: Very Slow Performance On Photo-Heavy Document

Aug 14, 2013

how to improve Illustrator (CS6) performance on a photo-heavy document.

The document is best described as a "catalog" style piece. It contains 2 artboards (front and back) with approximately 30 item images on each side.

When I work on this document, after every click, tool selection, or almost any action, Illustrator "sticks" and goes to "Not Responding" temporarily, then becomes stable again for me to perform a function - then it will stick again (and repeat).

Photoshop :: CS6 Very Sluggish After Assigned RAM Used Up?

May 19, 2012

during the evaluation of my PS CS6 trial I encountered the following problem. Painting on a layer mask is very, very sluggish once Photoshop CS6 has used up all RAM that has been assigned to it.When I am in 100% view and <shift><click> about 10 times in quick succession it takes almost a minute for photoshop to catch up, often the last clicks get lost and the next click draws a line without using <shift>.

I tried without improvement:

- Different brushes (hard, soft, down to 10px)
- Disable graphics processor
- Disable layer icons

The problem seems to be related to virtual memory handling. Does PS CS6 use virtual memory buffering? The Activity Monitor shows still free memory.In comparison and on the same system, Photoshop CS4 with default VM Buffering remains quite responsive although the RAM usage of PS CS4 (active + inactive) is much lower than in CS6.

Image data

25130 x 9250 px, 16bpc, 95 layers with masks, but 92 of them with non-transparent pixels in only a small area (177 x 236 px)

Paint Shop Pro :: X6 Seems To Be Getting Sluggish

Dec 3, 2013

Over the last week or so I've noticed that X6-64 seems to be far slower and less responsive than it was at the beginning. I'm not sure if this is my computer or the program.

There seem to be many to be many instances where a tool seems to stop working and I can see the indicator (Windows moving circle) is showing something is going on. In previous versions, if PSP was writing to file a bar would appear at the bottom showing progress of whatever activity was taking place behind the scenes. This was reassuring as it told me that the program had not stopped dead. That indicator seems to be missing from X6.

Photoshop :: CS4 - Clunky And Sluggish

Jan 7, 2009

Just been trial testing CS4 with a keen view to buy. However - on my setup it feel sluggish. I notice the mouse pointer does not move smooothly and in pace with my mouse movements, making mask selections and cloning for example rather problematic.

CS2 work no problems. I am running on Windows Vista 32bit, with a 2.0gz dual core Pentium Dell XPS laptop, with 4GB RAM. A top spec graphic card with latest drivers too. Can't see why it should not perform equally as well as CS2. Anyone got any ideas, as I would really like to sue some of the new features in CS4.

Do I need to un-install CS2 first for example?
I noted also that some modules like MMX don't open properly when CS4 starts up.

Lightroom :: How To Get Crop Tool To Work Faster (is Sluggish)

Jul 27, 2012

I'm cropping a few thousand pictures, and the crop tool is just sluggish.

Changing the crop or moving the picture behind the crop is jumpy, sometimes it needs seconds to change the display, which makes cropping pain to work.

Even after the picture is loaded and the lightroom rested some time, cropping is sluggish, which should not be, since the picture is fully in the memory and moving it around should be easy for the computer.

So how can I get the crop tool to move faster?

I'm using a Win7 Core i7-2600 with 16GB Ram, LR catalogue on Intel SSD, images on a fast SeaGate HDD, AMD Radeon HD 6800 grafics adapter, 30" (2560x1600) display. The files are NEF from a Nikon D800E, but the files from my D700 are slow, too.

Photoshop :: CS6 Extremely Slow And Sluggish / Brush Tool Delay

May 24, 2012

I own a copy of Photoshop CS6.Switching from Photoshop CS to CS6, I have found this version to be extremely slow and I can not find a reason why it is like this. It is impossible for me to work on it.

Problem: Slow performance, when using the brush tool there is a long delay - lag. The brush takes more than 8 seconds to catch up with my strokes.

Software:Adobe Photoshop CS6 x64OS:Windows 7 x64 SP1CPU:AMD Phenom II X4 965 BEGPU:Radeon 6790 OC @ 920MhzRAM:A-Data DDR3 1333Mhz CAS9 4GB (x2)SSD:A-Data 510 128GB SATA3HDD:Samsung SATA 1TB

Tried:
- Memory usage allowed upgraded to 6GB, nothing changed.
- Default selected "Scratch Disk" is the main SSD which has over 58GB of free space, I've tried selecting the secondary HDD as well but nothing changes.
- Disabled the "Use Graphic  Processor" square. nothing changed.
- Disabled the "Use open CL" square in advanced Graphic Processor Settings. Nothing changed.
- Changed power management settings in windows to "High Performance". nothing changed.
- Disabling tablet pc service doesn't work.

Notes:
- Graphic drivers are the latest release on AMD website
- Windows is completely updated
- SSD Firmware is the latest available.
- The issue happens both with mouse and tablet.
- 1px brush and 5000px brush lag just alike in zoomed and not zoomed canvas.
- This happens on both x64 and x86 versions of the software.

Illustrator :: How To Convert Vector Drawing Into Non-clipping Paths Drawing

May 5, 2013

I want to take two 3D views from (autodesk) Revit Architecture 2012 to Illustrator CS5 and then make use of the live paint bucket tool*.  I've printed the two 3D views into pdf files and imported them in Illustrator**. When I select the whole image in Illustrator and then click with the Live Paint Bucket tool on the drawing to modify the drawing so I can color the surfaces, Illustrator gives me the following error:

"The selection contains objects that cannot be converted. Live Paint groups can only contain paths and compound paths. Clipping paths are not allowed."

Exporting images (jpg, png and tiff) from Revit results in the same error. Is there a way to easily convert my vector drawing into a non-clipping paths drawing? Also I'm not sure if the problem should be found in either Revit or Illustrator. What's also strange is that I'm using a tutorial provided by my university, in which there are no issues with clipping paths or anything.

* This in order to make an conceptual image of my building, which I've modeled in Revit. I want to add basic colors to surfaces in Illustrator and then take the image to Photoshop to add shadow, materials, sky etc.

** They only consist of lines, using the 'hidden line' visual style in my views in Revit, in case you know a bit of Revit.

I do a brush stoke and I see the egg timer before I get a screen update. it  feels like its maybe doing that whilst it updates the layer thumbnail.  Urgh.  Lightrrom 2 is unbelievably slow, now my workhorse has gone the same way. Will getting a quadro help with this or is it a fundemntal problem? (I'm on a 2.7 ghz core2 with 4gb or ram in xp 32bit).

Photoshop :: CS2 Performance

Feb 24, 2006

when I pick up a color from the canvas CS2 will choke and slow down heavily for about 3-5 seconds, as though it's a hard task to pick the color up! I'm not completely sure what causes this, because it doesn't happen all the time. I've tried picking up colors on higher resolutions (2000+) and smaller ones but it has proven not to be the cause of the problem. Allthough it does seem to occur more often on bigger resolutions than smaller ones.

And it seems CS2 is also much slower on loading my fonts than CS1 was, currently holding 500+ fonts, a bit much probably, but wasn't that big of an issue in CS1.

I just wanted to add that it seems it triggers no matter from WHERE i pick up a color from, the pallete, canvas, etc.

Photoshop :: CS3 Performance

Jul 15, 2009

I have a HP laptop that is about a year and a half old. I've had PS on it for that whole time and upgraded to CS3 last year. The laptop is pretty decent, 17inch, 2.2Ghz Dual Core with 2GBs of RAM, but has/had a small hard drive of only 120GBs. Well when editing pictures that fills up fast especially considering I only have 20GBs free when PS isn't open. So I bought another hard drive (the comptuer has a spot for another one) and I moved personal files (music, pictures etc...) to it and also told Photoshop to use it as a scratch disc. Well now PS is hanging up when I'm doing something as simple as merging layers, let alone doing a batch job of actions. So I'm testing out moving the cache files (scratch disc) back to the other hard drive and seeing if it works any better, but I just wanted to open a discussion and see if anyone has any ideas as to what could cause this if its not the hard drive?

Photoshop :: Performance CS2

Jun 18, 2008

I used to run CS2 under XP and everything was fine! A technical fault with the PC caused the hard drive to wipe itself, and for some silly reason I installed Vista when I reinstalled everything.

The PC is very powerful and has plenty of RAM, but CS2 runs very badly on it. It can run normally, usually for the first few seconds of use, but will inevitably slow down.

Anything to do with an onscreen image, such as marking an area, painting, anything. I mean it really slows to a crawl. Positioning the cursor on a location and rapidly moving it to one side, there can be a delay of several seconds before it moves! This really makes the software unusable. Thing is, I cant tie down what it causing it. The CPU use hits 100% which is the obvious reason, but why it is, I dont know. There doesnt seem to be any disc access. Also, it doesnt depend on how large or small the image is. It happens even editing an image as small as 400x400. If there is one thing, then it may well be that it is when the image is enlarged so that it is bigger than the window it is displayed in. In other words, the scroll bars are present. It never seems to happen when they are not present. Does anyone have any ideas? All the drivers are fully up to date, nothing is causing problems. the machine scores 5.9 on the vista performance test and it has 4GB of ram.

Photoshop :: CS6 / Lr4 Hardware Performance?

Aug 25, 2012

I just built a new desktop specifically for Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4.1 performance.

My build consists of:
CPU: intel i7-3770
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (2x8) DDR3 1333

[code]...

Using default scratch disk and raw cache location at the moment (the same SSD the app is installed on), but will likely add a dedicated smaller SSD at a later date.

Performance with this build is a vast improvement over what I had previously (dual core intel xeon with 3GB and win Vista 32-bit), but I would like to speed up the processing of things like the blur filter in Photoshop, and the loading of images when cycling through develop module of Lightroom (ie, the Loading Image and rendering)... with more bias towards Lightroom performance as I edit large wedding galleries.

From a hardware perspective, would I recognize more of a performance improvement in these areas (and possibly others) by adding another 16GB RAM (bringing the total to 32GB), or by adding a dedicated graphics card, such as this one [URL]...

If your answer is via a graphics card upgrade, I'm also interested in your recommendations; if this one is overkill or not the best choice. I have an additional ~$250 I could add to this build at the moment.

Photoshop :: Terrible PS-CS3 Performance On EVERY PC...

Feb 26, 2008

I thought Id use a more captivating title than my previous How can I speed up PSCS3 (PS10.01) ? thread as Im now convinced that CS3 is seriously defective and wonder why Adobe does not take this problem seriously? As previously stated, tasks that I can perform easily with CS2 will bog down CS3 to the point of being useless.

I started with an Intel DP965LT motherboard with QuadCore Processor, 4G RAM, Windows XP-Pro, and very fast hard disks. There have been claims in this forum that some users are not experiencing performance problems and that it must be the result of a hardware issue on my end. So I swapped out the RAM with various brands loaned to me by my local custom PC builder. I reinstalled the system more than once. I changed the motherboard to a more expensive D975XBX2. I repeated the test on every PC Ive had access to and the SAME PROBLEM exists.

Tonight I just returned got back from the local computer shop where they let me install the 30day trial version of PS10 on a pretty good system theyre building for a client who does hi-end 3D work.

Tyan S5396A2NRF Motherboard
Dual Xeon 5420 processors (1333MHz bus, 12MB cache)
4GB Quad-Channel fully bufferred RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS Video w/ 640MB RAM
PC Power + Cooling 610 EPS psu
Western Digital 320 AAKS 7200 hard disk

The result: The SAME pitiful performance!! I performed my little test: Opened an RGB image 20x30" @ 300ppi, started placing a few 43k images and after placing the third one Photoshop CS3 slowed to a crawl, there were delays before the move would execute, if I quickly moved the layers with Auto Select Layers enabled it resulted in Photoshop not responding after 10-15 moves and would take 20-40 seconds before Photoshop would recover. The scratch disk grew to 12gb and the Windows Task Manager showed that the system was barely being taxed.

Photoshop :: Open GL 2.0 Performance...

Mar 15, 2009

Prior to my recent purchase and installation of PS CS4 Standard, I had downloaded and installed PS CS4 Extended, which is the TRIAL VERSION of PS CS4.

I've noticed several difference between the TRIAL VERSION and Standard.

While using the TRIAL VERSION, The Arrange Documents Pull down showed all the icons within sections 1 and 2.

With the Standard Version installed the same icons associated with the Arrange Documents Pull down are no longer visible.

While using the TRIAL VERSION, image magnifications of 500% or higher were displaying the Pixel Grid.

With the Standard Version installed, those same magnifications NO LONGER SHOW the Pixel Grid.

While using the TRIAL VERSION, the Preferences - Performance GPU Dialog box was grayed out.

With the Standard Version the GPU Dialog box is stilled grayed out, but now reveals (in black text) that "No GPU options available with Photoshop Standard".

Was the OpenGL specs for the TRIAL VERSION somehow "loosened" or made less stringent versus the OpenGL specs for PS CS4?

Is there any other explanation for the differences in OpenGL performance between the TRIAL VERSION and the Standard version?

Photoshop :: CS3 Preferences/Performance Not...

May 13, 2009

I have increased RAM in a Windows XP Pro, 32bit PC, from 2 GB, to 4 GB.  Windows recognizes that I have 3,141,872 kb of physical memory available.  Yet, Photoshop CS3 only shows available RAM of 1705 MB (Edit-Preferences-Performance-Memory Usage).  I am preparing to do Boot.ini modifications to the /3GB, and /userva switches to increase RAM available to PS.  I assumed that PS would show an increase in available RAM, even before modifying the switches.  I've been assured by a knowledgeable Windows/PS user that these mods are straight forward.  Yet, when I told him that PS was not recognizing the new Ram, while Windows XP was recognizing it, he suggested I post this on the Adobe PS forum.  Hence, my thread.   In sum - why doesn't PS recognize the new amount of RAM, or how badly have I misunderstood the concept?  (It's probably operator error.)

Photoshop :: Performance Degredation

May 13, 2009

using CS4 the performance drops so significantly that it becomes an unworkable environment. This is in contrast to when the program is first started at which point it is perfectly fine. To get around this problem I am having to restart the application every hour or so. Needless to say this is an impractical approach for long term use. The performance is so bad that it takes several seconds for a click to register. Although a polygonal lasso mask can be finished by double-clicking, it is impossible to actually perform a double click to complete the mask because it takes so long to respond between clicks. Trying to draw a mask with four points could take anywhere up to 10 seconds. My machine is an Intel Core i7 with 6GB of RAM and a GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB graphics card running Vista x64. This issue has nothing to do with history states. Closing all documents or otherwise purging all in-memory data does not alleviate the problem. Upgrading to 11.0.1 has not changed the issue in any way. The only way to recover is to restart the application.

Photoshop :: Performance With CS2 And Vista

Mar 16, 2008

I recently bought a new PC. I used to have a virtually identical PC that was running CS2 under windows XP, until it blew up, which is why it needed to be replaced. Alas the new PC is running Vista. Under XP, the performance was great, but under Vista it is very poor indeed. In particular selecting a region or painting with a large brush, and the PC just can't cope and there are frequent pauses that make it just about impossible to use CS2. I have checked the performance monitor, and it seems that there is plenty of memory, but the CPU usage is hitting 100% all the time. But this is a 3Ghz Dual Core, with 4Gb of RAM ( only 1Gb is ever used ) and a top of the range graphics (8800) card. The issues are related to the sixe of the image, typical image sizes I edit are around 2500x2500. Provided I trim the image to about 1000x1000 then everything is ok.
