Illustrator :: How To Hide One Stroked-only Object Behind Another

May 14, 2013

I'm laying-out a white-only T-Shirt logo (to go on a dark-green T-shirt)

For the sake of simplicity, let's say I have two ovals with no fill, just a white stroke.  A small oval overlapping (on-top-of) part of the edge of a larger (underneath) oval.

how to 'hide' the line that's 'behind' the top object? [URL]

Illustrator :: CS5 - Stroked Shape Becomes 2 Shapes?

When I re-open the file the stroke has become a shape itself, with many points, and the fill has become a shape with no stroke!?

Illustrator :: Blending Stroked Paths From Big To Small In Both Directions

May 17, 2013

I want to blend two similar paths. Both paths have dashed lines as strokes, and both dashed lines go from big to small dot, in decreasing direction. I want to blend both paths, so the blend goes from big to small, in BOTH directions. The ideal ending image would show the biggest dot at the top left corner, and the smallest, at the down right corner (the final project involves two spirals, but for the sake of simplicity, I attach two straight lines).

I try to blend them, and the blend only goes in one direction, as seen in the attached samples (in the sample, it goes from top to bottom, but it doesn't go from left to right). It seems that Illustrator takes only the first dot size, and applies it as if all the path has the same dot size.

Illustrator :: Pixel Perfect Stroked Rounded Corners In CS6

Oct 26, 2012

I cannot attain pixel perfect stroked rounded corners without a stray pixel being shown on one of the corners.  I need pixel accuracy for UI I'm developing (i.e. for screen, not for print). Here's what I'm doing:

1) New document, Align New Objects To Pixel Grid.  Document units are in pixels, and Preferences>Units all are set to pixels.
2) Create grey rectangle, something like 100x32
3) Set a 1px black stroke, outside
4) Apply Rounded Corners, 6px radius
5) Make sure you're in Pixel Preview Mode
6) Notice the one stray pixel in the bottom corner that is out of place at the edge of the round.

Here is a screenshot that shows my tests.  Note if I use Center Stroke, it seems to work at first glance, but then applying other effects (e.g. 3 px inner glow) are incorrectly applied (due to pixel snapping of the centered stroke).

Illustrator :: Erasing Overlapping Shapes - How To Cut Out Part Of Some Stroked Objects

This is part of the logo: [URL].  I need to erase the white part of the hexagon that's showing through the cog and circle shapes, and I need to erase the part of the green cog that's showing through the circle.  The problem is that the cog and hexagon have been made using strokes, so every time I try and use the pathfinder tool the cog inverts itself and I get odd results like this: [URL].

Illustrator :: Recolor Artwork Dialog Not Replace Color Of Objects Filled Or Stroked With Pure Black

May 24, 2012

The Recolor Artwork dialog does not replace the color of objects filled or stroked with pure black, either CMYK or RGB. (Yes, with the Recolor Art checkbox selected.) The dialog will replace any other color, but not black. Not even a manually created rich black. Manually selecting another color from the Color or Swatches panel does change the object's fill or stroke.

This happens with both CS6 and CS5 under Windows 7 x64. I reported it as a bug on the prerelease site. Also not sure if bug reports are still being read for the released version.

Illustrator :: Hide Everything Outside The Artboard?

Mar 12, 2008

I'm designing some business cards, which have an 1/8" bleed, along with elements that hang outside of the border of the card. Is there a way in Illustrator CS3 that I can say, "hide everything outside of the Artboard" so I can see what the finished product will look like?

I know I could print them out or output to PDF and see it without the non-Artboard items, but these approaches seem clumsy and labor intensive. I'd like it if I could have some sort of "cropped view"--where everything not on the Artboard is hidden--to work in.

Illustrator :: How To Hide Bounding Box In Just One Document Window

Jul 23, 2013

Using Illustrator CS6 for Windows, when I open a document and then open a second window (Window > New Window), I can show rulers (View > Rulers > Show Rulers) in one window without affecting the behavior of the other.

I can also hide edges (View > Hide Edges) in just one window, but not the other.  I can even show the transparency grid (View > Show Transparency Grid) in one window, but not the other.

This is all as expected, and very useful when I keep one window on my working monitor and drag the other window to the monitor my client is watching.

The problem is this: when hide or show the bounding box (View > Hide/Show Bounding Box), it affects both windows.  Furthermore, it affects all open documents--not just multiple windows belonging to one document.

This is maddening--is there some way I can restrict that change to just one window?  I can't imagine why other View options are per-window, but this View option is application-wide.

TL;DR: In Illustrator CS6 for Windows, how can I hide the bounding box in one and only one document window?

Illustrator :: How To Hide Everything Outside Of The Drawing Area (like W In InDesign)

Jun 20, 2013

In InDesign I can press W to show or hide everything around the page I am working on. In Illustrator I can't find a similar option. I am working on something and a lot of things are outside of the actual drawing area. The problem is that I see everything all the time and so I never get a good impression of how the illustration will look when finished/printed! I now have to export a jpg in order to get a good impression! Or I have to add a layer on top of everything and place white blocks around the actual drawing area in order to get a good impression of the actual artwork.

Illustrator Scripting :: How To Hide / Show Individual Items In Document

Nov 18, 2012

I'm trying to hide all items in a document (and store each items original visibility state), iterate user pre-selected items and perform an export for each item in selection (I've got this part covered), and finally restore the visibility state of each item again (here's where the storing of original visibility state is needed).

I've found that I can iterate all items in the document using app.activeDocument.pageItems[i] where i is the page item identified by the i-th index in the pageItems collection.

What is not clear, however, is how to get the visibility state of this page item. Indeed, there is a property visbilityVariable associated with page items, but when I try to "inspect" its content using an alert message, I get "undefined".

Are there better ways to iterate all items in a document? Ideally, I'd like to access all items regardless of wether they're path items, group items, text frame items or what have you. I need this collection to read/write the visibility state of each individual item.

Illustrator :: Hide / Remove Pesky Negative Space Voids

May 24, 2012

We've all seen this:

Adding strokes to an object, often text (in this case outlined/expanded text), and there develops little unsightly "negative space shapes".

The white stroke has an Offset Path added to it.

How to dynamically rid an object of these? Tried drawing little paths over them, grouping them with the compound text path and using Pathfinder > Add effect . . . but nope.

The workarounds are obvious -

1) Expand everything, delete the unwanted bits.
2) Draw solid paths over the negative spaces that match the bg, like the pic below:

I do not receive this error using the default symbols.  The gif and jpg images are imported and imbedded into the document and then moved to the symbols library.

Illustrator :: Object Layering Opacity - Fill Doesn't Block Out Object Paths Beneath

Jul 14, 2013

I am having some trouble with a file in Illustrator CS6. Within a layer, when I add a fill to an object, the fill doesn't block out the object paths beneath. For instance, say I have a square object overlapping a circle object in Layer 1. The square object is above the circle in the layer. When I add a fill to the square, the circle stroke still shows through the square even though the overlapped part should be blocked out by the fill. The square is set to normal visibility, and I have made sure that there are no duplicate paths that would account for what I am seeing. (I.e., it's not a case where there's a second identical circle path that is on top of the square, so that it remains visible in spite of the fill.)

Other details:
- I'm mainly working with a white fill, but the problem is the same with fills of any color
- When there's a fill color in the circle path as well, the circle's fill color *is* blocked out—just not its stroke.
- I have restarted Illustrator and restarted my computer and these have not changed anything.
- There are other layers within the same document where the normal layering rules work.
- I tried copy/pasting some of the problem objects into a new document, and in the new document, the fill works properly.
- If I move the problem objects to another layer, then the fill works as it should. But as I'm dealing with a number of paths, it doesn't make sense to create a layer for each to solve the problem.

I can't tell if it's a matter of working in too large or complex a file.
