Illustrator :: Actions Do Not Work In CS6?
Oct 4, 2013
Ever since I upgraded to CS6 (3 months ago) I am having crashes all the time with actions.
Â
I have tried to remake the actions, reinstall Illustrator, disable font embedding, nothing works. I have posted the crash to Adobe many times but no fix, obviously.
Â
Seems to be the saving that crashes Illustrator.

I am working on a large charity project that has 10,500 images associated with it. All the images are bing shot in a consistent format and need to be cropped for use on a web site. I have written an action so I can batch process these images but I have run into a snag.
When I open some of the images Photoshop is rotating them. They all were shot exactly the same and appear correct in my folder window. It seems to be random. Needless to say, my action won't work if the images are rotating.

I can record a batch action but when I try to apply it to opened files or folders, the batch window doesn't even appear and all the photoshop menu options are frozen and greyed out. I have to force quit the program to recover. This started happening last week and there was no updates or any other changes made to the computer or software. I have tried to delete the preference files and repair permissions and restart the computer, but nothing works. It happens every single time.

Can't seem to get "Layer > Rename layer ..." to activate with Actions, whether I try "Insert Menu Item" or "Record Action".I have created and used many actions over the years in Photoshop, and almost all of them seem to work fine in Photoshop CS6, except this one.In CS5.x the command was listed as "Layer Properties...", which brought up the DIALOG.
Â
In CS 6.x that command has been removed from the LAYER PALETTE MENU. Instead, the COMMAND has been renamed "Rename Layer..." in the MAIN MENU, and it no longer brings up a DIALOG. Editing is now done directly in the LAYER NAME TEXT FIELD and it was clear that the old ACTION can't work as-is.
Â
SO, I deleted it and rebuilt it as folllows:
Â
I created a NEW ACTION From the ACTION PALETTE's MENU I selectedThe ALERT POPUP came upFrom the MAIN MENU I selectedThe ALERT POPUP updated to show "Layer:Rename Layer".I clicked OK, but nothing showed up under the new ACTION in the ACTIONS PALETTE ...I thought perhaps there was a bug with the command in CS6, so I tried the RECORD ACTION process instead.
Â
with the ART LAYER visible and selected I clicked RECORD I selected and again. This time the ART LAYER activated properly .I changed the LAYER NAME and hit RETURN.In the ACTIONS PALETTE, the SET CURRENT LAYER ACTION was automatically added.I know I don't want "123" to be the LAYER NAME, but I thought I could manually edit the ACTION by adding a DIALOG BOX control.I clicked STOP to try out the KEY COMMANDI manually changed the LAYER NAME back to and hit RETURN to set it.I ran the ACTION by typing CMD-SHFT-F9As expected it dutifully edited the LAYER NAME Now I wanted to intercept the renaming step, so I ticked the DIALOG BOX option in the ACTION thinking it would give me some method of keying in a name during PLAYBACK.The first few times I ran the ACTION SCRIPT, it brought up the LAYER STYLE dialog. What?I thought something might be amiss with my FUNCTION KEYS, so I checked my KEYBOARD settings in SYSTEM PREFERENCES.This option was originally ON.so I UNCHECKED it OFF and closed SYSTEM PREFS.Back in PS it didn't seem to make a difference, so I thought maybe I needed to RESTART to activate this level of SYSTEM PREFERENCE.I RESTARTED, double-checked that the FUNCTION KEY OPTION was UNCHECKED, and tried the ACTION again. Now the ACTION didn't run at all, so I knew the FUNCTION KEY OPTION was supposed to remain CHECKED.I RECHECKED it, RESTARTED, and returned to PHOTOSHOP.When I ran the ACTION this time, the LAYER STYLE dialog DID NOT come up. The LAYER was simply renamed "123" with no way to edit it during PLAYBACK. What?Â
Â
In the end, I played with inserting a STOP or CONDITIONAL, I tried PLAYBACK OPTIONS, I inserted other random COMMANDS and played with reordering them. Everything works perfectly, but I simply can't seem to gain control over editing the LAYER NAME itself with an ACTION. I assume the root of the problem is that there is no longer a DIALOG BOX that controls the LAYER NAME, and therefore there's no moment in PLAYBACK that can give me DIALOG BOX control over the name.

When I try to use my brushes with actions in Photoshop, such as Save the Dress, Ying-Yang, or Foundation, they won't work. I've tried resetting the brushes, changing the opacity, restarting the program, and unlocking the layers. It was working perfectly, but suddenly just stopped. When I click on the image, it doesn't do anything. There is also a small black box next to the action the I am using in the history box. When my brushes were working, that box would show in white where I used the brushes on my pictures, but now it doesn't register anything that I try to do.Â

I use a series of actions that were created in CS6 and are not that complicated. They resize and align an object to coordinates with the center reference point and proportions constrained. I assumed that they would translate to other coworker’s machines with cs5 and cs5.5, but they do not work. The actions appear to load properly, but do not run like they should.
Â
When I hit the assigned hotkey, the selected object moves, but not to the correct location and does not change size as it is supposed to. Also, I can try to manually play individual parts of the action (moving to a reference point or resizing to a certain width) and nothing happens. Not even a wiggle. When I do try to do them one at a time, the small downward triangle button that reveals details of the action disappears and when I click again I get an error message that says 'the object "transform panel" is not available.' I assume this means that action is looking for a location that has changed name or something, but I don't know how they work well enough to spot any differences when viewing the action with a text editor.
Â
All of the computers I tried had win7. Mine is CS6 (v 16.0.2 64-bit), 2 others had CS5 and 5.5.

Since upgrading to Illustrator CC, my actions haven't been working right. All the details from certain steps are completely gone. For example, if a step involved rotating the selection by 90°, the "Rotate" step will still be there, but there is no longer a disclosure arrow next to it with the value of 90°. Also, the Fkey that was previously bound to the action has been removed.
Â
I have another action that selects all shapes with a similar fill and stroke, and the "Select Similar" step is still there, but again, the disclosure arrow is gone that included the information of "Fill & Stroke". Also, the Fkey associated with that action is gone as well.
Â
When I restore my actions from a saved copy, they are retained from file to file, but once I quit Illustrator and reopen it, the actions break again.

Pressing an F key in CS6 to call an action seems to cause the application to "double up" the action.
Â
At first it was not obvious what was happening, as some shorter/simpler actions run so quickly that it just appeared to be a malfunction with various commands.
Â
This happens with actions recorded in other versions, as well as those created directly in CS6. Running the action in button mode or by hitting the play button in the Actions pane do not cause this doubling. Only with F keys.
Â
We've been able to work around this by inserting stops via the action menu.

Illustrator CS6 (16.0.3) on Mac OS 10.6.8.
I've set up an action that will add crop marks to a selected object. The action works great when clicking the play button on the panel, but when I assign a Function Key to the action, it runs the action twice (giving me 2 set of crop marks). I've tried different Function Keys thinking it was a keyboard shortcut conflict, but that has made no difference.

I downloaded a couple of actions from the web to my actions palette and they worked fine, but then I got greedy and downloaded a few more and that’s when things went south. Now none of the actions work - by not working I mean when I mouse over the Play Selection icon at the bottom of the action palette I get that little circle with a line through it. This happens with the PS default actions as well (I also get the circle on the Stop Playing/Recording and Begin Recording icons).
Somewhere in the following is probably what messed things up.
I downloaded actions to my computer in zip files. Copied them over to the actions folder (or somewhere) and unzipped them. I went back to the actions palette and hit “load actions” and loaded them. On the second set of actions that I downloaded I remember thinking “why am I copying and pasting these files - I bet I should cut and paste them, so I did and that may have been the start of the great crumble of 2004. PhotoShop help says: (under Saving and loading actions) “Actions are automatically saved the the Actions Palette folder in PS7.0 Settings folder. If this file is lost or removed, the actions you created are lost”.
I have searched for the settings folder and couldn’t find it, but the actions still show up on the actions palette - they just don’t run.
I’m a little fuzzy on the details on the above steps. In fact, I probably did something different on each download.
one more thing, I reloaded PhotoShop, but still nothing.

I've noticed that the Magic Mouse for Apple Macs seems to interrupt actions when the finger is left on the surface of the mouse after scrolling about. Adobe, is this something that you're looking into?

I used to have my actions set up so i could easily save PDFs with different pdf presets, depending what the work was for (print, magazine ad with bleed, newspaper ad without bleed etc).
Now when I try CS6 and set up these actions in Illustrator it seems like the action wont use the preset I set it up with, and just defaults to the last one used.
Â
Is there something I'm missing or is this indeed a flaw in CS6? Its pretty time-saving for me so it would be a big deal-breaker upgrading to CS6.

Here's what I want the action to do:
Â
Clear the selected object
Fit the Artboard to the Selected Object
Save for Web and Devices
Â
I can get it to clear and save but I'll be darned if I can get the Fit the Artboard to the Selected Object to register in the recording of the action. No matter what shortcuts I use, menues I use it just won't record it. Is this just a thing Illustrator won't do or any I just missing something?
Â
I do those 3 things listed above ALL the time and it would be nice it I could make those 3 things into 1 action, then add that action to a hot key on my tablet.

I just spent two days automating a large project with Illustrator CS6 actions. I suppose I should have expected Illustrator to crash at some point during this process but I didn't and, of course, it did. Upon starting Illustrator back up after the crash, I found that all dozen or so of my complex actions were gone.
Â
I did a bit of googling and it seems that AI doesn't save these to disk anywhere; rather it just keeps them in memory until they're explicitly saved. That is, creating an action doesn't seem to actually store it anywhere.

I perform certain actions within its handler menu goÐœenuItem - delete some objects; do other invisible; run through certain actions by PlayActionEvent(), e.t.c. then export the file again through PlayActionEvent("adobe_exportDocument" ...) and see that after all my activities were canceled - a document recovered to the initial state, and after each export and save the need to repeat the entire sequence again. Moreover, on some computers to export certain actions randomly do not work.

I created an AI action that will perform the following actions on an AI file. Save currently opened AI file.Export current AI file as JPG.Export current AI file as GIF.Export current AI file as PNG. After using this action, I realized there are some thing that need to be changed in order for it to be truly useful. First, I would like the JPG,GIF,and PNG to save to the same directory that the currently opened AI file is in. For example, if I open an AI file that is located at C:/images/image1.ai and run my image export action, the JPG,GIF, and PNG should save to that same directory (C:/images/). In a nutshell, I want to make this path dynamic but when I create the action it forces me to specifiy a specific location.
Â
This becomes a problem when I try to send this Action Set to other memebers on my team. If they load the action set into Illustrator, it doesn't work properly because the save location is hard coded in the action.

I've got tons of actions I use F-keys for, and they're playing through twice when invoked that way.
Â
When I select the action and hit play, it works fine.
Â
It works this way regardless of playback option selected.
Â
Is there something I'm doing/not doing that's causing this?

In Illustrator CS6, after running an action involving a Pathfinder effects, the resulting paths are deselected.
Â
Steps to reproduce:
1. create a new action that includes a Pathfinder function, such as Unite or Divide.
2. select a couple shapes on the artboard.
3. run the action.
Â
The resulting shape will be selected automatically.
Â
This is new and very frustrating behavior. I perform many Pathfinder effects, as actions mapped to key combinations, then expect to perform addtional modifications which require me to reselect the paths again.

My computer crashed and I removed all apps and reinstalled so now none of my actions appear. However I do have a backup file of all of them and want to reinstall but before when I was using cs6 ( Im assuming same thing as CC as it was all on the subscription plan ) I would click actions then the right arrows and it would bring me a big screen of all the actions ( even the ones that were just preloaded in ps ) and it was a big box with all the actions and some options to record etc...Now that box isn't there and it's just a single column drop down menu.

This has been an issue since at least CS4. If you add a script to your actions via "Insert Menu Iitem" (not sure if it's for all items or just scripts) and close Illustrator, those actions disappear. Apparently, in CS6, Adobe has completely ignored improving including scripts to Actions, which really makes automation powerful. As awesome as CS6 is, that part is pretty lame.
