GIMP :: Switching Between Layers To Work On Each Individually
Jun 17, 2012
To work on different parts of images I understand that stacked up layers must be created for the different parts one wants to modify. However, once several different layers are created I don't understand how to switch from one layer to another in order to work on each individually. In the Windows menu I have created dockable "Layers" dialogs and I can see the different layers I've created, but by clicking on one or the other doesn't "get me into" that layer to work on it (to paint, erase etc). Without this basic concept I cant get past square one in working with GIMP.
I'm attempting to migrate from Fireworks to PS so I can access and learn more features and tools. One of the reasons I like FW is that simple things like aligning objects and layers, for example, to the center, top or bottom of the page is easy. I can't seem to achieve this very simple task in my version of PS CS5. For instance, to center a layer, I'm supposed to select another layer to reference it to? However, when I do this, the align function realigns the other layer I'm using as a reference too. I keep reading that the align tool can't affect a single layer. If this is the case, why have an alignment tool at all? It's a very confusing feature!
My question is this: can photoshop align seperate layers individually? Or should I continue to do that work, layout and design, in Fireworks and then save and import as a .psd file to finish my work in PS? (I know that PS is a great photo editing tool but I'm not sure if it is optimized for graphic design work like Fireworks is.)
I would like to know if there is a way to automatically merge a "base" layer with all other layers individually. For example, Layer one is an image, the "base layer".
Layers 2 thru 200 are images that need to be merged with the base layer individually and then saved as individual files. We are now turning layer 2 on and saving, turning layer 2 off, turning on layer 3 then saving, etc. Hoping to find an easier and quicker method.
I like having a source and a working image.. so what I end up doing is opening the source, then creating a new image, then copy/paste the layers I want over..then sometimes scale the items, or whatever..
I cant seem to be able to pick multiple layers to copy or scale.. I can chain them and then move em all together ok.. but as for copy/paste scale.. I haven't managed to find where I can group them and copy/scale .
I still have to go thought all the tools if I hit the b key and the Brush was already selected. Thought the preference of the shift key would work, but know. What preference or cache do I reset or am I missing something.
One day, when starting CS4 and working, I noticed that when adding text to an image, while the cursor moves, no text is in fact visible.
As soon as I switch layers, it appears. This also occurs for other actions, where you perform the action, but the effects of that action is not visible until you switch layers, or do SOMETHING else.
Win 7 Pro, 4GB RAM, 21GB free space on SSD, 1.24TB free on install drive. System otherwise stable.
I'm doing very complex drawing of a heating plant on a big ware house site. So I'm using two kinds of layers. I don't know, weather I'm using everything how it is to use or not, because I learned everything by myself.
The first layers are my so called "line type layers": hidden line, center line, wall, border, ... So all the different types of lines I'm using, when is start my drawing. I block all lines, which belong to one part like screws, doors, pips, engines, .. And at the end I put my "part" blocks" on my "part layers", like deashing, ash bin, boiler, building, electrical.
So lets say I have the layer "deashing", which includes several blocks like "deashing screw", "deashing drive", "deashing screw 2", .. And each block consists of several lines, which are on the layers, like "hidden line", "center line" and "black thin line", ...
And now I want to switch of everything in my drawing, which belongs to the "deashing layer" to get a better overview. So I "turn off" the layer "deashing", but I can still see it in my drawing. It just disappears, when I freeze the layer, but it should disappear, when I "turn off" the layer, too, shouldn't it?
So I hope I didn't wrote to much, but I good explanation is worth everything. So why does it not disappear or do I use the layers in a wrong way.
I have been using indexed mode to save 8-bit png files for the web, just as one would through the Save For Web interface in photoshop. sometimes it works brilliantly, usually when very few colors. but sometimes it changes some of the most dominant colors in the image. for example, if i make an image with background in #f3f3f3, two antialiased type layers in different colors, flatten the image and switch to indexed mode the background will change to something like f3f201 or whatever depending on the colors of the type layers (even if i choose 256 colors...).
EDIT: ok those exact instructions didn't actually replicate the problem this time that i tried it, but nonetheless the problem exists. if no one recognises it i will save the file it occurs to next time so you can all replicate the problem.
EDIT 2: happened immediately. i have attached a png of the file, even if you set it to 256 colors, switching to indexed mode will change the white background to #fefffc. once again, one could go into the color map and change it back to pure white, but to be completely correct one needs to change every color in the shadows (and antialiasing) that fade into the white, which will also have been offset by the switch to indexed mode.
my gimp 2.8.6 makes majority normal layers turn into text layers..
Even if i "discard text information" from layer..and then save it as .xcf it doesnt work! Same layers appear as text layers when i open that .xcf Its not a big deal but it really slows me down when im working with layers..
I merged my layers down to scale to proportion and I thought I was done with the project, so I saved it and exported. I then learned that I did something incorrectly, so I went back to the project only to remember I merged the layers and I don't know how to undo that. How do you revert the layers back to layers?
I am adding materials to a structural element (HSS8X8), but I need to show a different material/color for certain X-Braces only. When I select the X-Brace elements I want to change the material. all of the HSS8X8 in the whole model get changed too. How do I apply the different materail to the ones that I selected only and not global?
We have just done an overhaul of all our standard block symbols. These ultimately get saved into our title block template files.
Is there an easier way than Inserting each block individually?
Is there a variable that can automatically Redefine all blocks if I drag them in using ADC? The default setting is that any block that is already defined in that drawing will not get redefined.
Photoshop Version 13.0.1.This is not a great issue but i think this could be easily fixed by Adobe. If you want to link multiple layers in an image via right click and choose "Link layers..." it doesn't work as expected. But if you issue the link layers command in the layers palette it works. Same problem in 32bit and 64bit Version.
System: Windows 7 x64 SP1 Photoshop-Version: 13.0.1 (x32 and x64)
I recently upgraded from PSE9 to PSE12. I've noticed that once I'm deep into a many layered project that I can't click on a specific layer in the work area but need to click on the layer I want to work on in the layers palette. Is this something new in PSE12 or do I need to change something in Preferences?
I was just wondering if Photoshop will allow masking smart filters individually. not making files so heavy duplicating smart objects. If Photoshop will solve it or you know any way (not the nesting smart objects one) to do it.
is there way to Fill letters of texts individually?
So for example if there is a word "HELLO", applying a linear-simple-fade fill from H to O, it handles the whole text as one. So first character is the most and the last one is the less faded.Could be done that individually the H-E-L-L-O five characters get the fade?
From the "Adjustments" panel I often use a preset Adjustment Layer (I've saved some of my own in here).
I click on the preset adjustment layer I want and it appears in the Layers panel with a generic name Curves [X] or Levels [Y] or whatever. How many times have I had to type in the preset’s name, the name which is already in the preset list (rhetorical question - loads).
Here's an example:
I insert a single preset layer into the Layers panel. In the preset list it already has the name "Compensation for Printing"; when it arrives in the Layers panel it is given a default name Curves [X]. I then have to type it's name "Compensation for Printing" into the Layers panel. It would be more useful, and time saving if, instead of having the name Curves [X] it had the name "Compensation for Printing", already entered as the layer's name.
So (to labour the point) wouldn't it be cool if, when you clicked on the preset adjustment layer, it arrived in the Layers panel with it's name already entered. Or maybe we could have this as an option?
So if CS6 cannot do this, which from the Photoshop forum it appears not, could this be made into a "feature" in a future update of Photoshop. A small thing I know but very useful.
In Photoshop CC, the create group from layers choice only creates a folder; doesn't bring in the layers. Also, though you can create a group and drop the layers into it, the folder does not twirl closed.
how to report bugs directly to Adobe? This seems like a simple fix, programming-wise
I've clicked link on two layers and set 'Link Set' to 1 on both. I want to make a selection, and move what is in it. But with the contents from two or more layers, not just one. The move tool seems to always move the background layer, although it's locked. What am I missing. I've been looking for this basic feature for a long time. How does the link layers function work?
I have five pictures on a page. They're so old I can't peel them off to scan them individually. If I scan the whole page can I capture each one individually.
Any successful script for X4 that will export each layer individually as a .png? For instance: I have 10 layers, each having one element, I need each element to be exported into it's own .png file for future manipulations and althought I've tried writing my own, I was unable to get it to work
I dropped in a bunch of windows from an AutoCAD file into 3DsMax. I'd like to assign material to all of them without individually selecting each window frame, each window sash and each window glass. How would I go about isolating and selecting for instance, all window sashes at the same time or applying the same type of material to a particular type of object?
I am trying to import a set of .model files from CATIA which can be opened individually using MAX2013 DirectConnect importer, however when trying to import the CATProduct files which has all the .model files organised as an assembly I get an error message (also attached):
Starting process : Translating to APF DirectConnect did not successfully complete the file conversion. The error code was: -1073741819
Im trying to perform an action on a Batch. After i select the folder i want to use it on and hit save. The images start opening but when it opens the image layers are all locked and it wont perform the action....
If I click on an eye symbol the symbol disappears, but not the elements on the screen like you should expect. There's also a weird behavior with the lock symbols. If I lock a layer, I can click the paths anyway. The lock symbols doesn't work anymore. The whole layers palette is useless now. I tried to remove the whole "Adobe Illustrator 17 Settings" folder, but that had no positive effect.
