GIMP :: Heal Tool - Set Source Image First
Oct 4, 2012
I am using Linux Mint 13 and gimp 2.8.2 and I keep getting an error message "set a source image first" when trying to heal a dust spot. I choose the tool, I select the area I want to use to replace the dust spot with ctrl click but when I release the ctrl button and click the area to fix I get the message "set a xource image first". Strangely after I release the ctrl a animated radar appears briefly on the screen. Do not ever recall seeing that in earlier versions of gimp. At any rate I can not do a simple heal.

I have two questions about saving an image as a C source file.
1) In what orientation is the image saved in the C source (row-by-row or column-by-column)?
2) Why does GIMP only export to C source but not import? And as a follow on, any program that will read in C source images and display them?
Just to make sure we are all on the same page about which format I am referring to, here is an excerpt from one of the images I exported as a C source file.

I'm using GIMP 2.8.3 with Mac OSX 10.6.8. I can't figure out how to get rid of a red line through my pictures, or even how to make the clone or the heal tools work at all. Isn't it true that you're supposed to click Control and a spot next to the blemish you want to erase, then click the blemish and it's suppose to disappear?

After being embarrassed by failing to check the Clone/heal tool to make sure the opacity was set correctly, I am encouraged to ask another question that was not affected by the appropriate correction that made the tool work fine under most circumstances. However, using LR4 (and previously LR 3) )iMac 27 quad) at odd intervals, certain images show up with a single white spot, usually on a blue background, that cannot be removed or cloned with the LR Clone/heal tool. It can be removed with the clone tool in PS but not in LR. I don't know where the spots come from. They sometimes show up in a sequence of 3-4 or just singly. A copy of one is attached here. I don't know if this spot is an aberation in LR or from my cameras. Since it's happened with different cameras, I presume this is some problem with LR.

After installing LR 3.2, the first thing I noticed is that it is much slower than the previous version (using XP Pro + 3GB memory and a speedy processor).
But the most terrible novelty of this version is that the Adjustment Brush is going berserk after a while:
It first slows down to a crawl, so slow that it's almost impossible to work with. While working with it after a while, it starts to show random rectangular areas that are copies of other areas of the image that have nothing to do with the area I'm working on. This happens after a brush stroke. The Undo command makes these rectangular "patches" disappear. From time to time, the whole image is flipped upside down (You can't believe it? Neither could I) eventually, after a brush stroke, the sandclock mouse cursor is displayed and the program freezes (at this time it can be using over 1 GB of memory although I'm working on a single, standard EOS 5D image). The only way to stop this madness is to kill the process. The Heal/Clone tool also shows a similar misbehavior. I didn't have these problems with the previous version.

I created a panorama in PTGUI and imported it into LR5 as a tiff file. There is a small area in the upper right corner that is white as the image did not fit the rectangle exactly. I wanted to use the clone/heal tool to replicate a portion of sky to cover that area, but no matter what I do it will not put anything in that area - it just stays white. I was able to do this in version 4.x. What is going on?

there's nothing in that dropdown menu for you to select your source image/layer in the Move Path plugin.I am using an XCF (Gimp) file, with many layers. I selected a particular layer, then I opened the Move Path plugin.

So I am running CS 6 and my clone stamp tool has been having issues for the past couple weeks. I go to alt+click a location to get my source, and then as i move somewhere else to starting cloning, it instead uses the exact area i am trying to cover up. The little icon that appears to show you where you are cloning from, is always inside my cursor, no matter where i grab the source from.
Only fix I have found is closing up and restarting PS again, and even then, it only works for one or two clicks then goes back to the issue.

I am very familiar on how to use the scissors tool, but I want to know once I get to the end, is there a way to go to another section of the image to cut out what I want to get rid of?
Example, a picture of someone with their hands on their hips - I want to cut out the space in between the hips and arms and then everything else. How do I accomplish that?

I am retouching and area using the Healing Brush Tool. I first Alt-click on the area in the image that I want to use as the source.
I then paint over the area I am trying to change. The problem is that the source moves when I do that and I get the wrong replacements. How do I make the source static so it doesn't move when I paint?

I don't remember it being a problem in LR4, but I have just used the spot tool on an image where there was a crop. The program's choice of source for the spot tool seems to me to be more dramatic than ever before, and in this particular image the source selected was in the area which I had cropped out. To move the source point, I had to open the crop tool to adjust one side of the crop, then move the source, then restore the crop to the image, then reselect the spot tool.
It might well be that in some instances the cropped out area is the best source, but whether it is or not, I think we need to be able to access the cropped detail without resetting the crop itself and preferably without having to then reselect the spot tool.

I'm brand new to GIMP, I just downloaded it to get into some simple pixel art.
I was going fine, but I've run into a problem. I'm trying to select a portion of my image using the rectangle tool, and then move it to a different location using the move tool. However, when clicking and dragging the move tool it shifts the entire image, not just the portion I have selected. I read in the FAQ that you need to press "Enter" to finalise the selection before you move it, but even doing that doesn't work.
This was working fine for me earlier, I'm not sure what I've done to break it. I've tried resetting my tool preferences back to defaults but that has not worked.

I have an image, I was manipulating it, smudging etc. Then I selected the lasso to crop out the image. Then I wanted to go back and blur something else. But it wont let me. The lasso'd section of the image stays flashing, even when I double click it to stop it. I am stumped as to how to exit this function. I don't know why it doesn't just switch to blur when I press the BLUR button.
How can I get this to stop? It keeps interrupting my edits and I now have to do it all over again in a separate window as no matter how many times I undo the lasso section will not stop flashing!

I've been wondering how do you get the rectangle select tool to move the image, like in mspaint whenever I use it, it just moves the rectangle square and not the selected part of the image.

I'm trying to make a .gif file using a .wmv file as the source. It needs to be small, about 2 mb or less.
When I first finished the .gif (about 150 frames), the file was much too large. I resized it, used the "optimize" feature, and made it grayscale, but it's still too big.
Now I want to try cutting frames to make the file size smaller. How do I cut every other frame in my .gif?
Alternatively, is there any way to choose the number of frames I want in "extract videorange" (for ex: I want only 10 frames from mark 3:00 to 3:30)?

I am currently creating templates for my drawings in order to standardise their use which includes the creation of templates, multileader styles, text styles etc... and placing them in custom tool palettes. I am also looking to add standard blocks such as fasteners and steel sections to my tool palettes however this has thrown a bit of a curveball. Basically I want all the blocks that I place in the tool palettes to move with the .dwt file I have created. At the moment it would appear that the source of the block is within the filing structure of the computer as apposed to just the template file it is placed in. Is there anyway to resolve this, or have the blocks so that they are stored within the template so that if the template is moved onto say a stand alone laptop elsewhere the blocks that appear in the tool palettes would go with the dwt file?

When I copy a selection from one image to another, I can't select the feather tool to blend it in the new image (it's greyed out). I have to first anchor the layer, then use the paths tool to re-select the pasted portion again, then feather. Is there another way?
Update: Looks like I can feather before copying/pasting the selection.

I need to do a small bit of horizon straightening on an image which I have.
Using the rotation tool is fair enough.
Under clipping I select crop to result.
In the rotation dialog i enter the angle ( -.7 )
When I click rotate, it goes through the motions of a status bar advancing (green bar), but when it is finished doing its thing the image vanishes entirely, and i'm left with what looks like a transparent background.
If in clipping, I select 'Adjust', it rotates fine but I have to crop the result manually to have the image 'square' with no transparent angled edges.
How the rotation tool works? I'm using Gimp 2.6.4 on Windows Vista.

IProblem 1: Tool Palettes on top of image.
I'm using a 15" thinkpad laptop, with I think 1024 x whatever highest resolution. When I use Gimp, my screen real estate is being eaten up by the tool palettes more so than the image I'm trying to work on. I like the tool palettes - I'd like them to stay open - BUT what I'd really like is for the image to lay over top of the palettes, rather than the palettes lying over top of my image.
Problem 2: Zooming and scrolling in the image.
I'm not too sure what was different about photoshop in this regard, but I'm having a bear of a time getting my images to zoom and scroll in the manner I was used to in photoshop. What can I change in the Gimp settings to make it behave more like photoshop in that regard? I found one setting to increase window size as the image zooms, but that was worse.
I like a lot of the aspects of Gimp, but these two things are preventing me from getting to use it very much presently.

I have tried to upgrade my gimp2.8.2 (default in debian distrubuted version at the moment) to 2.8.10 since I read through release notes and realized I could be an even happier user with this version.During installation I found that I missed quite a few bits and pieces, but I installed them when required. (babl, gegle, glib2 e.g.).Eventually I reached the make install stage and it seemed to work ok. However when now opening gimp I can't open files and I lack quite a few filters possibly other menues missing I havn't walked into everything yet. It seems like a folders supposed to be created and refreshed in /.gimp2.8 was not.
I am on debian wheezy linux (7.2), xfce4 deskop.

Due to circumstances beyond my control the directory path that my tool palettes are mapped to needs to be changed.
From: T:Toolpalettesetc...
To: X:Toolpalettesetc...
I have hundreds of blocks in the tool palettes that are looking for their source file on the "T" drive.
My brain says "Find / Replace T: with X: " using Notepad in all of the ATC files.
Is there a better method to tell those blocks to look on the "X" drive?

When you apply a drop shadow, the shadow is cast in the same direction from all parts of the object. E.g. the shadow is projected to the right and downwards from the object. In other words the light source is far away and it produces parallel rays of light.
Is there a way to cast a shadow where the light source is quite close to the object? For example imagine the light source was just above the object. Parts of the object on the left would have their shadow projecting to the left and down and parts of the object on the right would have a shadow projecting to the right and down.

Have an open image in gimp 2.8 on suse 12.2, I call the "import palette" function, I set 64 colors, step 32, check the "from all layers" etc etc, and in the preview I see the 64 color palette I'd like. Looks good.
BUT: underneath the preview it says "the selected source contains no colors."And continuing the palette is indeed empty.

I know it might sound weird, HDR images are usually built from multiple images all taken from the same place at the same time but using different exposures.
I'd like to create a HDR image from multiple versions of one source image. I have a number of pictures where I've taken the photo exposing for the sky. This resulted in the landscape/buildings being darker than desired usually. These areas can be easily brightened up though. I find that if I expose for the landscape and buildings, then the sky is washed out and unrecoverable. If I expose for the sky, the landscape and buildings are merely "a bit dark" and can be recovered simply by adjusting the brightness/contrast in photoshop. Of course doing this washes out the sky again, so I need to create a composite of good sky and brightened landscape and buildings. I'm not creating anything professional, so it's not important that I use the best pro techniques.
What I've traditionally done is have two layers, one with the original image (with the good sky) and one with the lightened image (with the good landscape and buildings) and using a mask for the sky, I can put the good (unlightened) sky on the lightened image. Standard stuff really.
So when I heard about HDR automation, I'd hoped that I could take my original image (with the good sky), take a second lightened version of the very same image, put it on a layer, select a HDR automation tool and have it somehow merge them magically. When I've tried this though, nothing seems to happen. I'm left with an unmerged image. I'm pretty sure I'm going about it wrong.
I wonder whether this HDR automation isn't going to help me and perhaps my fake pseudo HDR image creation technique is worth sticking with.
I've been using Corel Photopaint 8 for many years and only just switched to PS CS3 recently (mostly driven by the thought of this cool HDR feature). I'm still finding my way a bit. I'm using it on XP if that makes a difference.

I'm using CS5.5/Photoshop5.1
I have about 1000 folders all that have a file inside called; sample.jpg. I need to resize each of them and I have to use the Save For Web option so that these files are as small as possible. Save As makes the images too big. My plan was to make an action and batch process the files. It's easy enough to open all the documents, within the root directory, that are called, sample.jpg, by using the finder search features, but what I can't seem to do is get the Save to Web option to recognize the image's source folder. If I create an action, I see that the location I used when I created the action, is hard coded, so all I'm able to do is overwrite the same file, over and over again.

Well, I need a little slideshow of images, the code for mouse events (click, mouseover, mouseout, etc.) is the same for all images, then I create a symbol with one image inside for this, and drag&drop instances to stage, but now I don't know how change the image source of other symbols. In design time, when right click over any symbol instance only edit symbol it's possible (not single instance), and I don't know if is possible to change the image source of any symbol instance by code.
