GIMP :: Drop Shadow With Nearby Light Source
Nov 17, 2012
When you apply a drop shadow, the shadow is cast in the same direction from all parts of the object. E.g. the shadow is projected to the right and downwards from the object. In other words the light source is far away and it produces parallel rays of light.
Is there a way to cast a shadow where the light source is quite close to the object? For example imagine the light source was just above the object. Parts of the object on the left would have their shadow projecting to the left and down and parts of the object on the right would have a shadow projecting to the right and down.

Upon inserting a .xcf drop-shadowed image into another .xcf image - by selecting Open As Layers - it inserts fine, but when I select the Move tool to move the image, the drop shadow doesn't move with the image. I tried selecting the drop-shadow layer from the layers - channels, paths area, but when I do that, and then try to move the drop shadow, instead of the drop shadow moving - when I select it, the entire background moves.

I find out I didn't leave enough room for a drop-shadow effect to end smoothly, rather than being cut off where I cropped the image. Is there an easy way to know exactly where the drop shadow ends, exactly where it's safe to crop the image?
see the bottom edge of the attached example image.

I am creating a texture image and was wondering how to detach/separate the drop-shadow from the layer from which it was created so I can delete the original layer but keep the drop-shadow.

I'm an infrequent and relatively unskilled GIMP user. I have used drop shadow in the past, and have been using it this afternoon with no problem until I started working on one image where I can't seem to apply the drop shadow to some text. I've got a 3-layer image, a background, a smaller image on a separate layer, and a text layer. Whenever I try to apply drop shadow to the text layer or the smaller image layer, it applies it to the background. I've tried everything I can think of...deleting and recreating the text layer, changing the "level" of the layer, closing then reopening the image...closing and restarting GIMP.. I select the text layer, click "Filter > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow", and apply and it always applies it to the background.

I opened up PS ,havnt used it too active lately and started to experiment a little. Anyway here's the thing i created but i got a little problem, the light source on the green part( as u see i tried to do something), i cant get it right, i want it as it would be shiny.BUT i cant get it to my mind where it should be (to right, left,up and down?) i made it with pen path and the colored it white and then reduced the opacity,if there is another way to get it ,tell me that too, but at least i would be very grateful if someone could tell me where it should be,coz i aint got an "eye" to see where it should come(maybe u would have to be more of an artsit than me to see it )

when using the filter Render > Lighting Effects, is it possible to duplicate a lightsource? My goal would be to have a light source of the exact same dimensions just offset on the canvas?

Just looking for some good effects to put on an art piece. Some sections are very dark and I'd like to add some accent to them. I know that solidworks was some textures that emit light, I was curious if there was anything like that in Inventor.

If it is possible to replace objects in a scene with light objects. The normal replace function in the import menu will only replace normal mesh objects with other mesh objects. But if I try the same by replacing box objects in my scene with the light source object I saved in a separate max file, it says it doesn't find any objects in the max file with the same name despite it having the exact same name. (both objects in question have all lower case letters in the name)
I'm currently using Max 10 to render lightmaps for a first person shooter game and I use various scripts to get the game content into the scene. The game also provides object positions for glow objects which are in positions I intend to use for light sources. Normally I go through a long tedious process of cloning light objects and positioning roughly in the same area where the glow objects are. (objects I decide not to replace with the game's object meshes appear as standard box objects in max unless I convert them to mesh objects).
But I would like to create a set of light objects and do a batch replace on some objects already in the scene with my light objects. This would save me a lot of time. Is there a function max that can do this or is there a script that can do this?

Because of the lighting, the small craters in the wall are filled with shadow. I want to get rid of these shadows and highlight them instead (I want them to be brighter than the rest of the wall).
Every time I try to select the shadows and replace them with light the edges are to hard and the color difference is too big with the rest of the wall. Also I think my selections aren't precise enough.

I've been trying to achieve the same look as this chocolate bar... after many months I kind of gave up on making the aluminum foil part My question is about the wrapper. I can see the shadows and I was able to do that.. kind of.. but how about the light on the wrapper? I've been using bevel and emboss and tried 360 degree of light direction and it doesn't look like that at all...

I drew a box, then applied a drop shadow going to the right. I duplicated the layer, then dragged it to the left of the first box. I edited the drop shadow to go to the left, and it changed, but so did the first one. I cannot get the two drop shadows to go in different directions.
I've tried different things, drawing separate boxes, etc. but it still will not work.
Does anyone know why this is happening or why I can solve it?

I've been following a few tutorials that say to use Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow, but for me Drop Shadow is not available in that menu. The only thing that is available is "Glowing Edges." I'm trying to add a drop shadow to an ellipse, but I've tried it with lines and even that didn't work.

I am making a sign for sign writing. The overall size is 2400mmx1800mm. so its quiet big.
But When I go to put a drop shadow behind it it comes up with this - " The combination of artwork size & resolution exceeds the maximum that can be rasterized"
Why is it saying this? How do I put a drop shadow on it?

Drop shadow behavior has changed recently, maybe between 12.0 and 12.1 update.
Since ever, drop shadow has been applied before transforms, causing us to compensate shadow angle when rotating layer at the same time. Now it seems that we don't need to compensate anymore, as if shadow angle was applied after transforms.
This is definitely a handy update, but is there a way to reverse this behavior to the old one, for compatibility purpose ?

I have a little problem during rendering interior of apartment. I am using Auto Cad 2009 and I have trouble with shadow and light. In realistic view, when I turn on the sunlight, inside of apartment iz visible only the part of the room on which the sunlight is falling through the windows, and I can't make the rest of the room visible as it should be during the day. Here are the pictures. First is without shadow and light, second is with shadow and light, and on the third is additionally turned on background sky.

I am using CS4. I want to add a shadow to some text. It works on one piece of text, but not on another. It shows the shadow in the layers palette, but it's grayed out (on the one that's not working). I tried converting the text to outlines... same thing. The layer isn't locked... so I don't know what's going on. Why won't my shadow show up?
