GIMP :: Can't Apply Drop Shadow To Desired Text Layer
Aug 23, 2011
I'm an infrequent and relatively unskilled GIMP user. I have used drop shadow in the past, and have been using it this afternoon with no problem until I started working on one image where I can't seem to apply the drop shadow to some text. I've got a 3-layer image, a background, a smaller image on a separate layer, and a text layer. Whenever I try to apply drop shadow to the text layer or the smaller image layer, it applies it to the background. I've tried everything I can think of...deleting and recreating the text layer, changing the "level" of the layer, closing then reopening the image...closing and restarting GIMP.. I select the text layer, click "Filter > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow", and apply and it always applies it to the background.

I have done this before but not today! The preview button is checked but I can't see any drop shadow appear. I have duplicated the background and extended the canvas 110% as in the past.

I am creating a texture image and was wondering how to detach/separate the drop-shadow from the layer from which it was created so I can delete the original layer but keep the drop-shadow.

Is not possible to apply Drop Shadow directly to a beveled object? I can get this only after converting object to bitmap.

Is there any way I can type in text, and put it in the same place in each layer without having to go to each individual layer and putting it in?

This bug has always been in PSP. for as long as i can remember. but in previous versions it just sent it bananas. in this version it can cause a full crash and lock up.
If you have no layer below the one currently selected, for example you only have one raster layer (put something in this layer suitable for drop shadow,) and you select 3D effects -> drop shadow with 'shadow on new layer' selected every time you adjust one of the shadow parameters it creates a new layer. so you can end up with dozens of new layers. seems like part of the routine is to renew the process every time a parameter is adjusted but the logic that removes the layer doesn't work when the source is at the bottom.
new to X4 is that if my system is under high cpu utilization it just completely crashes. probably the method by which it allocates the new memory to new layers is timing out.

I'm having trouble grasping this "Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow" via LayerStyles>DropShadow.
It's defined as: Controls the drop shadow's visibility in a semitransparent layer.
I don't understand. If the layer is semitransparent, and "Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow" is unchecked, I see no difference in the shadow..

I am trying to add a drop shadow to a vector layer and it is not working and was wondering if there is a way to add that and other effects.
I first created my box using the rectangle tool and filled it in with a solid color. With the layer active, I selected the "add a layer style" button to bring up my options. I then checked the "Drop Shadow" box and procedded to use the tools in the drop shadow box, with the preview boxed checked, as I made my selections, nothing was hapening to my solid color box where It was supossed to go.

drop shadow plug-in?I know how to create drop shadow effects without the plug-in, but I'm trying to use the plug-in and am having no success.
1. I open Paint.net 3.5.10 and click the NEW button, then click OK in the New dialog box.
2. I create some plain text. I am using Arial 26 font and solid black color. The Layers window has one layer named Background.
3. I open up the Drop Shadow plug-in and just mess around with it, but nothing happens.
I have a feeling I'm missing a step in between steps 2 and 3. Do I need to duplicate the layer, or add a new layer? If I do, what do I have to do once the second layer is created?

I have an image silohetted on a transparent background. In order to put a drop shadow on it that only affects the bottom half of the image, I duplicated the layer, added a drop shadow layer style and a layer mask>reveal to fade the effect of the drop shadow. This worked but the layer masked added black or darker coloring to the over all image - then I reduced the fill on that particular layer to 0% and still got the discoloration. Why is the overall image getting darker with the addition of the lay mask on the layer style?

I have a transparent canvas and would like to put a "square" on it. I'd like the content inside the square to be transparent as well, but I'd like to apply the "Drop Shadow" and "Outer Glow" style to the box, while keeping the inside of it transparent.
When I try to do this, nothing occurs because the "square" is empty. The only way I can get the shadow to occur is if I fill in the box with a color, such as white, first. However, then the center isn't transparent how I'd like it to be.

Upon inserting a .xcf drop-shadowed image into another .xcf image - by selecting Open As Layers - it inserts fine, but when I select the Move tool to move the image, the drop shadow doesn't move with the image. I tried selecting the drop-shadow layer from the layers - channels, paths area, but when I do that, and then try to move the drop shadow, instead of the drop shadow moving - when I select it, the entire background moves.

I find out I didn't leave enough room for a drop-shadow effect to end smoothly, rather than being cut off where I cropped the image. Is there an easy way to know exactly where the drop shadow ends, exactly where it's safe to crop the image?
see the bottom edge of the attached example image.

When you apply a drop shadow, the shadow is cast in the same direction from all parts of the object. E.g. the shadow is projected to the right and downwards from the object. In other words the light source is far away and it produces parallel rays of light.
Is there a way to cast a shadow where the light source is quite close to the object? For example imagine the light source was just above the object. Parts of the object on the left would have their shadow projecting to the left and down and parts of the object on the right would have a shadow projecting to the right and down.

Everyone says to do Layer > Layer Style > Style Settings.
But when I go to Layer Style and try to get to Style Settings, Style Settings is greyed out. (The text in quesiton is already selected.)
In fact, I've tried everything possible to get Style Settings to become engaged and have not been able to do that.
Also, when I go into Effects and try to add cool effect (torn paper, glowing edges, etc.) to the text, it automatically changes the color of my text. For example, my text is orange and when I tried "glowing edges" it changed the text to olive drab... and it certainly didn't glow.

I am having a problem in CS6 Photoshop where I never experienced this in CS3-5.
I am designing a website and when I apply a drop shadow or inner shadow to a layer through layer style/blending options in the layers tab. It applys the same angle etc.. to all the other layers I have done styles too...
I will have 5 + layers done with styles and I will make a new layer and give it a shape, open up blending options and when I do a drop shadow and change the angle I literally can see everything on my layout change angles also when I move it around for just ONE layers style... What on earth is going on? This makes it impossible to make unique designs unless I keep flattening my PSD and transfering stuff over which destroys workflow.

My questions is how to prevent the following from happening. I created a layer style drop shadow in a .psd file with the below parameters.
I saved it as an .asl file that I could use later. When I loaded it into a different .psd file later that day some parameters stayed the same but the angle reverted back to 30 degrees from 120 degrees all on its own as shown below.
I just want to know how to keep layer style parameters I saved in an .asl file from reverting back to defaults when loaded in to a new .psd file.
My systems parameters are as follows:
Photoshop CS6 Extend Version 13.0 x64
Mac OSX 10.8.2 with 705.44 GB used out of 749.3 GB available
The only other software I am running is Safari web browser. This is my first time trying to save a layer style and use it in a different .psd file other than the one I created it in.

I have 2 layers, a text layer on top, and a shape behind it. When I add a drop shadow to the text, the shadow shows up BEHIND the shape, instead of on it. If I choose mode "Multiply," then it shows up in front but is way too big.

I'm using Illustrator CC although I haven't tried doing this in earlier versions. When I copy text that has a drop shadow made with "effect/stylize/drop shadow" the drop shadow is editable from the Appearance pallet only in the original document. In the pasted document the drop shadow is there but does not show up in the Appearance pallet so I can't edit it. It shows up on a different layer so I can delete it but then I have to create an editable shadow from scratch on the new document. When I copy objects that are not text with drop shadow, the editiability remains, but it doesn't seem to work with text unless I create outlines of the type and then I lose the editability of the text. Is there any way to copy drop shadows that are editable on text?

For my business card design I have white text overlapping an area of very white grey- causing readability issues (insufficient contrast). It looks great apart from this one problem, so I still want to keep my white text and light background and fix it by separating the text and background with a darker drop shadow..
First, I added a black drop shadow to the text- but this was not enough to increase readability (text still looked faded on background as drop shadow was too subtle at 85% opacity, 0.04" blur) so I added a drop shadow to my drop shadow (100% opacity, 0.02" blur + 18% opacity, 0.02" blur). This produced a heavier drop shadow effect for my text as desired but, for some reason, the text came out slightly grey in print (offset run). It seems the drop shadow somehow got printed over the text itself to some extent- turning the white text somewhat grey (and so not looking as clean as intended).
How could this dropshadow bleed into the text happen? Is it to do with the fact I added a drop shadow to my drop shadow? I would have thought that, even then, the text should entirely overlap all of the drop shadow as the text is the top layer in the group.
What can I do to ensure that drop shadow does not print over text in any way in future? Do I have to stick to only one layer of dropshadow-or is there something else I'm missing?

I am converting from Photoshop and there is one common task i used all of the time which i cannot seem to figure out in Gimp. I have two canvases open, each with a few layers. I select the move tool and then start dragging the layer on one canvas to try to drop it into the other canvas. In Photoshop when you do this it creates a new layer on the dropped canvas consisting of the dropped layer, and the layer resets to its original position on the first canvas.
In Gimp however when I try this its as if i dropped the layer way outside of the viewable area of the first canvas, and nothing gets added to the second canvas i want to drop it into.

I am having a problem with my Text to Path, specifically, I want to apply a gradient to my text, however when I make my path and select my text, the outline only appears over part of my text and thus I am not able to apply the gradient to the entire block.
Edit:
It seems like there is a character limit for this type of text, because I added some characters and it shrunk my selected area further.
