I am very familiar on how to use the scissors tool, but I want to know once I get to the end, is there a way to go to another section of the image to cut out what I want to get rid of?
Example, a picture of someone with their hands on their hips - I want to cut out the space in between the hips and arms and then everything else. How do I accomplish that?
Does the scissor tool NOT work on compound paths? I am guessing it does not being it does not work when I use it on them, but the Adobe help section didn't specify.
Also, sometimes when I am using the pen tool, I will place an anchor point but it shifts away from where I want to place it. For example, I will put it at x = 72 & y = 1000 and it will place it at x = 95 & y = 1050.
I thought maybe it was from something I accidentally selected like snap to grid or point, but changing the settings does not correct the issue. I have to close out of the program and restart to fix it.
I've got a very long rectangular image. The top is important and the bottom is important, I want to cut out the stuff in the middle.How can I use the marquee tool to get rid of a large area that I have selected?I have done a fair amount of searching on Google and the forum but I still cannot figure it out.

Is there any way to move the marquee around as if it was a square converted to curves...just move the handles to say a triangle? I know I can powerclip to any curve design I can create..it just looks as if you can use the handles to flip, rotate, etc..

In ps7 editor I can have 2 pictures cascaded and using the marquee tool and the move tool insert a section of one picture into the other. I cannot do this in ps11, what am I doing wrong?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Linux Mint 13 and gimp 2.8.2 and I keep getting an error message "set a source image first" when trying to heal a dust spot. I choose the tool, I select the area I want to use to replace the dust spot with ctrl click but when I release the ctrl button and click the area to fix I get the message "set a xource image first". Strangely after I release the ctrl a animated radar appears briefly on the screen. Do not ever recall seeing that in earlier versions of gimp. At any rate I can not do a simple heal.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm brand new to GIMP, I just downloaded it to get into some simple pixel art.
I was going fine, but I've run into a problem. I'm trying to select a portion of my image using the rectangle tool, and then move it to a different location using the move tool. However, when clicking and dragging the move tool it shifts the entire image, not just the portion I have selected. I read in the FAQ that you need to press "Enter" to finalise the selection before you move it, but even doing that doesn't work.
This was working fine for me earlier, I'm not sure what I've done to break it. I've tried resetting my tool preferences back to defaults but that has not worked.
I have an image, I was manipulating it, smudging etc. Then I selected the lasso to crop out the image. Then I wanted to go back and blur something else. But it wont let me. The lasso'd section of the image stays flashing, even when I double click it to stop it. I am stumped as to how to exit this function. I don't know why it doesn't just switch to blur when I press the BLUR button.
How can I get this to stop? It keeps interrupting my edits and I now have to do it all over again in a separate window as no matter how many times I undo the lasso section will not stop flashing!
I've been wondering how do you get the rectangle select tool to move the image, like in mspaint whenever I use it, it just moves the rectangle square and not the selected part of the image.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I copy a selection from one image to another, I can't select the feather tool to blend it in the new image (it's greyed out). I have to first anchor the layer, then use the paths tool to re-select the pasted portion again, then feather. Is there another way?
Update: Looks like I can feather before copying/pasting the selection.
I need to do a small bit of horizon straightening on an image which I have.
Using the rotation tool is fair enough.
Under clipping I select crop to result.
In the rotation dialog i enter the angle ( -.7 )
When I click rotate, it goes through the motions of a status bar advancing (green bar), but when it is finished doing its thing the image vanishes entirely, and i'm left with what looks like a transparent background.
If in clipping, I select 'Adjust', it rotates fine but I have to crop the result manually to have the image 'square' with no transparent angled edges.
How the rotation tool works? I'm using Gimp 2.6.4 on Windows Vista.
IProblem 1: Tool Palettes on top of image.
I'm using a 15" thinkpad laptop, with I think 1024 x whatever highest resolution. When I use Gimp, my screen real estate is being eaten up by the tool palettes more so than the image I'm trying to work on. I like the tool palettes - I'd like them to stay open - BUT what I'd really like is for the image to lay over top of the palettes, rather than the palettes lying over top of my image.
Problem 2: Zooming and scrolling in the image.
I'm not too sure what was different about photoshop in this regard, but I'm having a bear of a time getting my images to zoom and scroll in the manner I was used to in photoshop. What can I change in the Gimp settings to make it behave more like photoshop in that regard? I found one setting to increase window size as the image zooms, but that was worse.
I like a lot of the aspects of Gimp, but these two things are preventing me from getting to use it very much presently.
The Scale tool from the toolbox behaves differently from Image>Scale Image. What's the difference? Are there circumstances when I want one and not the other? I'm using 2.8.6, Windows 7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am working on a design at the moment using Inventor 2012.It is a Scissor Jack. It has been designed to specific dimensions.Although I am making up the majority of them as I go along.Dim's spec's of which I must design to are as follows,
Max Height @ Open position = 250mm. (must be kept)
Min Height @ Closed position = 70mm. (must be kept)
Max width = 75mm. (must be kept)
The rest I have been taking from other designs of which I saw during my investigation.I have been modelling in such a way trying to adapt the open & closed position limitations with the use of constraints as my maximum & minimum limits. In doing so I have set a Drive Constraint so I can show the jack in its mechanical motion. I don't mind making any changes that will work to achieve completing it to act as it should. I believe there is still some tweaking to be done to it, but I feel the actual engineering design to be almost sound. There is an issue with the base via support arms. I cannot have the support arms moving past the floor level.
I will need to place location pins through the saddle & base connecting the arms. Finally If possible alter the gear teeth so that they interlink & coincide with each other. My screw rod also needs to work properly & turn also the nut needs to be localised in the correct position fixed on the screw rod at the end of the Side sleeve.
I encountered was after I outlined an image in order to remove the background around it, i could not disconnect from the outline tool (scissors). How do I do the disconnect?

I am testing the trial version of Photoshop CS5.5 and I am experiencing a weird issue while using the marquee tool while selecting a portion of an image, cutting that section and pasting it to a new layer.
First off I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2.8Ghz Dual Core Processor, 4 Gigs Memory, 2 Gig Video card and current on updates with a fresh vanilla install of CS5.5. Not filters or plugin installed.
Step by step of issue is as follows,
I take an image on layer 1 and while using the marquee tool select and area on that image. I want to cut and Past In Place that selection on a new layer, layer 3.
This will allow me to insert another layer, layer 2, in between layer 1 and layer 3 and show what ever I place on layer 2 but still have a complete background if the image does not fill the entire transparent section.
A good example is a wanted poster. You have your picture frame with the Wanted letters and reward. In the center you have a transparent square. In the back you have a black background. In between the frame and the background you place a face. The face will not fill the entire square so you will see some of the black back ground.
Now the problem appears to be that the dotted line of the marquee selection makes so you can see your selection stays transparent or deletes the ares directly enter it when you cut and past to a new layer. The transparent outline looks to be the same size of the dotted line when that selection is selected. I have looked and searched for this preamble and resolution but can not see one.
The picture below is the result after I deselect the area. You can see just above another section that I tried to cover up but did not get it all. If I try and stretch the section, it skews the contents out of proportion.

How to keep a section view of an iam active when accessing the distance tool? As soon as I click on the distance tool, the half-section disappears. This makes it difficult to measure relationships from one component to another. I am using Inventor 2013 which was recently installed on our workstations.

I do not think I can just take an image from either of these sites, so I will probably have to make my own from scratch.
Is it possible to make these kinds of images in GIMP? (Will also need to be able to annotate the cutting angles of the planes, and include some Greek alphabet.)
Or do I need a commercial Mathematics software package to start the image, and then use GIMP to make relatively minor edits afterwards?
I want to use the ellipse to cut out a section of a picture. Then I want to save the ellipse so that only the ellipse is shown. Instead, I am getting a rectangle with the ellipse in it. After that, I would like to put a border around the ellipse.

I open a .jpg file and then using the Rectangle select tool highlight a section of the image. I then click CTRL+X and it actually cuts the whole layer showing me just the empty background.
All I want to do, is open the .jpg, copy or cut a section from it to a new image.
Every time I try to move a section of a photo with the Rectangular Marquee Tool, I get an error message saying "Less than 50% of the pixels have been selected and they edges of the sections cannot be seen. What am I doing wrong?

I'm not an artist and just for this I have to use Photoshop. For me PS is an overkill for just cutting up an image.
