Nov 1, 2011I am looking for a way to automate the process of cropping an image to a rectangle that precisly fits the outermost non-white pixels of an image. Ideally I would be able to specify the white tolerance. Is there a plugin that does this? Or a series of steps that can be rolled into an action?

Jul 29, 2012I've spent most of today doing some print design in xdp7, I like the software a lot especially the live effects, however there seems to be a problem I'm experiencing using them in that once I have used an effect, xdp7 adds a load of white space to my image, like thousands of pixels, obviously I customised the size of the image before I began, and when I export the image it reads some of the time as the desired size, and some of the time the much larger size. I've tried cropping but it doesn't make any difference, I've tried changing the image size in the utilities option, but still the image I created is there along with the white space.
So how do I make sure what I save is just what I am creating, and how do I stop this from happening or counteract it. Also why does it do this?

I'm using a 15" thinkpad laptop, with I think 1024 x whatever highest resolution. When I use Gimp, my screen real estate is being eaten up by the tool palettes more so than the image I'm trying to work on. I like the tool palettes - I'd like them to stay open - BUT what I'd really like is for the image to lay over top of the palettes, rather than the palettes lying over top of my image.
Problem 2: Zooming and scrolling in the image.
I'm not too sure what was different about photoshop in this regard, but I'm having a bear of a time getting my images to zoom and scroll in the manner I was used to in photoshop. What can I change in the Gimp settings to make it behave more like photoshop in that regard? I found one setting to increase window size as the image zooms, but that was worse.
I like a lot of the aspects of Gimp, but these two things are preventing me from getting to use it very much presently.

I mostly receive vector pdf's, but sometimes when i open them, the image is displayed all in white with a white background. i've played around in gimp to try and get the image to show but cannot succeed. i know there is an image in the file because i send it to a friend who uses illustrator and he manages to make the image appear somehow.

Nov 27, 2012I'm brand new to GIMP, I just downloaded it to get into some simple pixel art.
I was going fine, but I've run into a problem. I'm trying to select a portion of my image using the rectangle tool, and then move it to a different location using the move tool. However, when clicking and dragging the move tool it shifts the entire image, not just the portion I have selected. I read in the FAQ that you need to press "Enter" to finalise the selection before you move it, but even doing that doesn't work.
This was working fine for me earlier, I'm not sure what I've done to break it. I've tried resetting my tool preferences back to defaults but that has not worked.

Dec 16, 2013I've tried using GIMP many times, yet I've accomplished very little, given all of GIMP's functionality. For example:
If I want to select part of an image and copy it to another area or to a new image/layer, and also FEATHER the edges, here's how I'd do it in an old graphics app I often used years ago:
1. Select the area.2. Hold Ctrl while moving selection with Move tool.3. Use the slider to soften the edges to my liking.4. Press Enter to anchor selection. Done.
And there were sliders also for opacity and other things. So very SIMPLE because the prog. was designed very intuitively. How would I accomplish the same in GIMP? Well, most of the time, I WOULD ACCOMPLISH NOTHING! At best, I'd enter values into the box, not like the result, enter new values, repeat. And that's on a good day.
Somebody write a SCRIPT/PLUGIN that allows the use of sliders exactly as described above! I desperately want to be a HAPPY GIMP user, but I'm growing ever more hopeless. I don't want to turn on my older PC just to use a graphics app that actually lets me get things done.

Oct 22, 2011I have a photographic image, I need transparent background. So normal add alpha channel, select by color, clear, save as png.
But this time, select by color also selects parts of the image I do not wish to clear, including the models eyes. Set the threshhold to zero and it *still* selects parts of the image.
The image is already isolated from background. I tried using paint bucket to change background color and select by color that way, and it sort of works except paint bucket doesn't fill in parts where the models curly hair cut the path, so I end up with transparency but white background parts in her hair.
What would be cool is if I could select by color, and then manually use some tool to deselect the selected parts on the model that I do not want to clear, but I can't figure out how to do that.

Dec 29, 2011I have made a couple pretty nice text images, for friends, and myself. Many times this text image will have a border and consequently a transparency along a corner of the image because they are not always perfectly rectangle.
