I have a flattened bitmap (no layers) and I would like to make it "fade" out to one side in a pixelated way, as if the pixels of the image is breaking up and the image is dissolving into transparent. I don't know if that explains it well, but a little like this image:

How can I do this with The Gimp? I also have the original image in SVG format with all the layers (made with Inkscape)?
I created an image in gimp and flattened it before saving. I now want to edit some of the text in that image, but when I open in Gimp "As Layers" or just open it, it does not open in three different layers, like I had before flattening it. Am I doing something wrong. I saved it as a jpg file after flattening it.

In Photoshop most of my work uses the fade command. I've discovered this in GIMP and it works with some tools but not others (it's grayed out).So for example, if I wanted to draw with the paintbrush and then fade it to 50%, how would I do so? I'm suspecting there's some way to do it that doesn't involve Edit > Fade.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a fade in animated gif based on a youtube tutorial. The tutorial has a background then creates a new image layer. The image layer is duplicated and the opacity is increased from lower to higher values.
A copy of the background is created and placed under each newly created layer.
The video then merges the layers down into the copied backgrounds. This is where my gimp version does not work. My new images will not merge down into the copied backgrounds. Is there a setting that I am missing on my layers?
I am new to gimp and am trying to work out how to fade out an image diagonally.
I have managed to fade and image from left to right using a masked layer and the gradient tool but am struggling to fade diagonally.
I would like to add some black boarders to my fotos that fade to transparent. a little bit like this [URL]But with the difference that I dont need the boarders to be really really dark. they sould be more transparent where I can still see some of the details of the foto layer beneath. The idea is more to give my pictures some slightly darker boarders so that I can print them out and they look somehow similar when I put them on the wall...
So theoretically i thought of adding a new layer, make a rounded selection, invert the selection and use the blend tool from black to transparent (if this is somehow possible). But maybe there is an easier or better way or maybe there exist some additonal plugins where I can do some simple foto things like that with a already existing filter?

But instead of opening up both images in different colors, both show up as the color of the first image. Both images are png files, the same file format that I used the first set of images for. I have not changed the size nor made anything transparent.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using gimp for awhile now and have had great success using itto retouch about a zillion scans of old family photographs. but other than then few things I need in order to do that (paintbrush, clone tool, rotate tool and crop) I am still largely ignorant of how to use gimp. (There's just so much functionality in there, and I'm sure that I don't even have any use for about 90% of it.)
Anyway, a relative just sent me an old old family photo that some nitwit,perhaps a generation or two ago, did some seriously violence to with a pair of scissors. To salvage this one and to make it look presentable I really need to be able to take the scan I have of it and crop it into a oval shape.(Yes, it is a portrait.)
So anyway, how do I do this? It isn't obviously. I already did manage to figure out how to make a selection of the exact size and shape (and location)of oval that I want, and I _did_ make a selection like that... at least I_thought_ that I did... but then when I did crop-to-selection I ended up with the picture cropped to a rectangular shape, where the rectangle in question is, quite apparently, the rectangle which only and exactly contained the oval that I had selected earlier.
I'm sort-of guessing that what I really want is gonna end up being another one of these things that ends up involving multiple layers... yes? I mean of course, what I _really_ want to end up with is an image that _is_ in fact a rectangle, but everything outside of my selected oval has to end up being painted total white (255).
This is a strictly B&W image, BTW... just like all really old family photographs everywhere. How to fade the edges of the oval slowly to white.

I have read the blend tool tutorial in the user manual but all I can get to hap pen is a black and white gradient completely covering my image. I have tried adding a transparent layer over the image and applying the gradient to it but for some reason when one side of the image (using the linear mode) starts to get darker, the other side gets lighter, creating a severely distorted contrast with the image, plus the fade covers an entire half of the image.

I have a text layer with width given at its creation. When I later open text editor and enter some wider text, it is wrapped to second line. So I would like to enhance the width of the layer to prevent this. When I add width to the layer using "Layer Boundary Size" menu item, text layer gets converted into standard bitmap layer . I don't understand the logic why a text layer isn't preserved on change of its size .
Is there a way how I can adjust size of text layer without its conversion to a bitmap?
I am currently using this method, creating a 1-bit bitmap from a grayscale "distress" texture bitmap, choosing transparent fill or outline depending on which area i need trasparent and powerclip it in text or other vector object.
Is there a way to achieve the same distress effect with transparency with FILL ? pattern fill maybe? eg can i save in some format this bitmap to use it maybe as a pattern in pattern fill and retain transparency ?

I have a screenshot, which I have cropped to a specific area to show a specific part of a window: a shape with a bitmap fill, or a cropped bitmap whichever way you consider it.
Next I have another screenshot, of exactly the same dimensions, showing the same window - but showing that window in a different state.
Both screenshots are bitmaps in my document, both appear in the Bitmap Gallery.
I'm not sure if something changed in recent versions of Xara, or I have forgotten the drag+key combination, but how can I drag the second bitmap onto a copy of the first bitmap-filled shape so that the SAME part of the bitmap is shown?
Using different combinations of SHIFT and CTRL I seem to be able to replace all instances of the first bitmap with the second: It is scary that a shape with a bitmap fill offscreen or on another page can be changed unwittingly!
I had a saved PSD file and I opened it to edit it. I flattened it and hit save by mistake. How can I go back to PSD if all the "step back" is not going all the way back to PSD?

The version being used at college is version 7 and when I loaded it on this the image had been flattened. I wondered if I had saved this incorrectly but I opened it back up in CS and it was fine.
is there a way of saving in CS to an earlier version of Photoshop? Or is it possible to convert a CS .psd to a version 7 .psd?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I flatten the files that I have been working on into TIFFs for delivery to clients, sometimes the preview (or thumb nail) shows only a single layer of the original layered file that I was working with. When the file is opened in Photoshop, the complete image is there.
Is this a bug or is there a way to correct this before I flatten the image? Btw, I have seen this same issue through many versions of Photoshop... from CS3 through CS6. When saving the same flattened image as a JPG, the preview saves correctly.

I've got a background layer which is a solid colour, and the layer on top of that is a picture with some advanced blending done to it.
When I try to flatten, the picture just reverts to how the picture looked before the advanced blending was done.
I've tried collecting it all in a single layer with no luck. I've tried making a postscript of the PSD file but that bombs in distiller. I've tried combinations of other single-colour layers below.
Normally I save my Illustrator files in PDF format and have done for a few years now. Last month we installed CS6 on all of our PC's and I have noticed that when I open PDF's (originally created in CS3) in CS6 it flattens the layers and puts what seems to be a clipping mask around the graphics. The type also seems to get broken down in to segments! We use a draw-box for our proofs and have that layered for ease, but we can't seem to resolve the issue, even when we re create the files.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have an image that I've made in illustrator / Photoshop and I noticed that when I save the image as a JPEG out of Photoshop after it is finished it looks way different that it does while in Photoshop.
I merged the layers just out of curiosity and it looks that way after all of the layers are merged. Why it is doing that. Is there something I can do to change this? it is just happened to one of my images. I have multiple pieces in this style and it hasn't happened to any of the other ones.
If I go on adjusting a psd-file which has been flattened, will the file´s image quality go worse?
Meaning that I´ve had a TIFF-file (made from a RAW-file) that I have adjusted with plenty of layers. After all the adjustments, I´ve made a copy of it, flattened the copied file, cropped it to the wanted size (no interpolation), and made some changes again with cloning tools and gaussian blur.
But after this, I find I still have to make another version of the image with different adjustments of lightness (curves) and colors (color balance, saturation) and I´m pondering if I have to go back to the file with layers, or can I continue with the cropped file and make new adjustment layers on this flattened image. Would be better for the work flow and my nerves...
What is the procedure for moving text in an image after it has been flattened. At one time I was able to use the Polygonal lasso tool to select and move, now I am unable to do so.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to export from Illustrator to Photoshop I get the message, "Some containers need to be flattened". When I click okay and open it up in Photoshop, it's completely flattened.
I did some looking around and some people said that the appearance pannel causes it to be flattened? Well, as a test, I deleted all of my layers and just kept one button I made that had multiple objects. I raterized each one individually and tried to export it. In photoshop it was still flattened, but this time to a button layer and a dropshadow layer. Is the appearance pannel making everything in the appearance pannel a layer, and everything not in the appearance pannel another layer and just ignoring all of my objects?
How should I go about fixing this? I want to be able to export in as many formats as possible, but this has me stuck.
Is there anyway I can re-edit after I flattened and saved? I noticed afterwards I still have splashes of color left on the pony's head !!!! Or do I just need to start all over : Elements 11

I've checked and double checked that Write Layers, Max Editability etc is ticked but then I get a box saying "some containers in AI have been flattened".
View 19 Replies View Related[URL] This image is directly from a customer’s email. An Illustrator template for custom candy bags is sent to the customer and has about 10 layers on it. Somehow they always come back as Layer 1, flattened. I am opening them up in CS5.why a multi layered file constantly comes back from our customers as a single layer? Having all layers is very important for these bags to print properly.
