GIMP :: Coloring Layers Based On Data Set

Jun 20, 2011

I am hoping to utilize GIMP to map the results of a research project. Is it possible to color defined layers based on a data set? For example, is there a way to use GIMP features to edit an Adobe Illustrator editable map by importing an excel document containing two columns: one column containing the names of the defined layers and another column containing the color value in hex code. Based on this document, could I use GIMP to easily apply the colors to the layers?

GIMP :: How To Get Listing Of Layers And Select Black FG Layer Data

Feb 9, 2013

I have a small image imported from a PDF 1.2 X 2 centered on a 8.5 X 11 inch White background.

I simply want to select the black portion of the image, copy - duplicate a set amount around the existing image.

I thought this would be select, copy paste, paste..... done, save. but no not that easy.

I assume I have 2 layers a FG and a BG layer. I believe that FG is Black ? I have tried rectangle select then paste but that is not working.

How do you get a listing of layers?

How do I just select the Black FG layer data?

How to I paste into a 3X3 array which is my ultimate goal:

X is the original image in Black:

C are to be copies of the X image:
C C C
C X C
C C C

I will attach the PDF image

Photoshop :: Resize Image Based On Data Within?

Oct 12, 2008

So here's the problem. I managed to delete a photo from my digital camera. Now I need it back. I recovered the file, but strangely, it's not actually recovered.

Now, I know file recovery is hit and miss, and since this was a photo from the camera itself (not a memory card), things get more complicated. Anyway, I manged to get back the photo...sort of.

The file I now have is 160x120, instead of the 3040x2288 it should be. Now, if this was an actual thumbnail, I would expect the file size to be pretty small. Instead, this little 160x120 image is 2.16MB. This leads me to belive that somehow I can get the real photo (or at least something better than the little image) back from the file. There has to be a reason for that much extra data, right?

Does anybody know how to do this? I figured Photoshop might have some advanced sort of raw file reading or some sort of rebuilding/recovery. Alternatively, someone could point me to a good recovery program (or even some other way to do this).

If it helps, the camera that the file came from is an HP Photosmart M627.

GIMP :: Coloring The Lineart

Feb 22, 2012

I'd love to color linearts with GIMP. But I have few problems. Actually only one. First my problem was that I was only allowed to use black/grey colors (so gotta change the photo as a RGB mode). Now I have new problem. You see, I've made few layers (layers for background, lineart, colors..) but when I'm trying to color the lineart (and I'm "in color layer") any of that color isn't showing?

I made the color layer as transparent. I don't know is the "lineart layer" transparent, but haven't seen a button where I could change its mode.

GIMP :: Coloring In Scanned Pages?

Mar 24, 2013

I'm trying to get myself a little better with digital art, but still not too comfortable with the idea of doing the initial drawing without pen and paper. The only downside is that I can't really get those crisp colors with just pencil colors.

how do I go about setting things up to where I can color in a scanned, non-colored inked page, but without worrying about overlapping my inks and making it look messy in general. I imagine it would have something to do with copying and pasting new layers, but I just can't get a handle on what I'm supposed to do. I also know about messing with opacity to let outlines show through, but there's still the issue of color dulling the black when it overlaps.

AutoCad :: Data Extraction For Cutlist Based On Dynamic Blocks

Jun 4, 2011

I design all of the architectural metal used on most project homes being built in Sydney at the moment.

I draw up balustrade and screening etc.

Basically what I have is a huge collection of complex dynamic blocks that I insert into my drawings, I then change all the variables to suit.

These drawings are then dimensioned, and a parts list manually written out based on the lengths etc of each type of material.

All of these drawings are exact reproductions of what is produced on the factory floor, so it is quite easy to identify the parts, but rather painfull to manually write out a cutting list.

I'd like to add attributes and/or fields for material type and length to each of these dynamic blocks, which update as the blocks are manipulated to the required sizes.

where I get stuck is that there are multiple drawing methods used to create these blocks, and I cannot seem to figure out exactly what I should be naming, and assigning length fields too, or even how to extract or what to extract!

When I extract the data, I get a mess of conflicting and confusing information that is impossible to sort correctly, as I can use the dynamic parameter field for some, but not others, and on others it is a simple line, but on others again they are polylines and the length is useless to me.

I have tried to creat a block with an attribute for each and every individual part, but when I combine these into a complex part and try to assign dynamic parameters as a single dynamic block, the previously blocked and named parts wont behave correctly.

Im not sure if im making much sense here, but in my mind it all seems simple enough, I just cant get it to actually work with my exsiting blocks...

All im really after is a simple BOM, for example, I have a dynamic block with the Style code A0-1, when this is inserted I change 3 different lengths depending on the job. This style code is made up of several components such as a 40 mm square post (coded 40SQ), an 80 sq baseplate (coded PF2) and a 50 x 25 mm handrail (coded HR5025).

I need to extract a length for the 40 sq post, a length for the 50 X 25 handrail and an item count for the baseplate.

There may be 25 of these in a drawing, all at different sizes.

The dynamic block works perfectly for drafting, but not so well for data extraction.

There are over 1100 of these dynamic blocks, created over the last 2 years, and the only missing piece in the drafting puzzle is the extracted cut-list to save a large amount of time, and I just cant get it working.

Is there a methodology I need to learn here? will I need to re-create these blocks to allow for extraction?

I have explained to my boss the theory behind all of this and he is keen for some working examples that the monkeys on the shop floor can read and understand, and Im stuck creating an extraction template that can work, even if just for proof of concept that I can refine over the next few months.

I know ACAD can do this, I know my brain has all the data, I'm just not getting the ACAD>BRAIN interface working here.

GIMP :: Coloring B&W Image With Gradient Colors?

Jan 20, 2013

I'm designing a banner for my gaming guild's forums. I have draw the logo/banner and textured it. After Desaturating the image im left with a nice B&W image.

I know of many ways to color the image but everytime that I do the color doesn't match the other colors we have on the forums.

What I want to do is color the image according to a color gradient that we use on the forums.

I would like to have the whitest pixels of the banner be the lightest color from the gradient(#c0a864) and the darkest pixels of the banner be the darkest color from the gradient(#917341). And have GIMP interpolate between those two colors for the other pixels in between the lighest/darkest.

Similar to how a Bumpmap works, only instead of simulating depth based on the range of colors from Black to White, I want it to colorize the banner.

GIMP :: Invert Channel - Coloring Line Art

Feb 15, 2012

I don't do a lot of digital coloring or painting but when I do it's very comic book style. I have a method I use (you hay have seen it at polykarbon.com.)

This is how it works. Get some good clean line art in RGB mode.

In Channels, duplicate the blue layer and INVERT it.

Go back to the Layer fill the whole image with white. Then create two new layers above the background layer.

On the top layer, go to Select and pick Load Selection. Pick Blue Copy. You see the marching ants.

Fill this selection with black. Now you have a layer of your line art, a middle layer on which you can color without messing them up, and then a background.

I haven't been able to do this in Gimp. I'm willing to learn a new coloring method but I really like this one. It's easy and fast and really allows for a lot of customization. You can color the lines, do masks, etc.

My problem is the part about INVERTING the channel.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Choose Best Hydrology Method Based On Available Data / Desired Outputs?

Nov 11, 2013

I am in case to model a stormwater network contain ditches with irregular sections, open channels and closed pipes in SSA. I do not have access to IDF curves for the Project area. We got a weather station in site which is giving us continuous data from last 3 months till now. At this stage we just decided to use certain Rainfall intensity (mm/hr).

We got some check points to check the turbidity. What I need to know after analyse is i.e what is the flow at these points at 6:00 pm if we experience the rainfall from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm with 20 mm/hr rainfall intensity.

So my concerns are with these available basic data, which method is suitable? and as long as we approach more valued data from in site weather station then which method will be the best.   If i want to input time of concentration manually for each subbasin then how can i input TC of pipes or channels in SSA? URL....

where MATT said: "SSA does not calculate the Standard-Step method. The Rational Methods (including modified, and DeKalb) all compute the runoff to the inlet or junction. As soon as runoff enters the system, continuity and momentum calculations take over. SInce you are using Steady State Qin = Qout, so no routing occurs on pipes."

how do i understand the flow in certain points i.e 2 hrs after the rainfall is finished if I can not define TC for pipes or channels?

Photoshop :: Even Vector-based Layers Are Pixelated?

Oct 18, 2013

The files I am creating in photoshop are all coming out very pixelated lately. Especially after I flatten the image or export it to a pdf. This is true even for text layers, eps files I placed, and vector-based objects I drew. The photo layers are pixelated too, even though they were hi-res to begin with and I only made them smaller when I added them to my document. Why everything is so pixelated? I tried changing the file from 72 to 300 pixels/inch, but that didn't clarify the images. It just smoothed the edges a bit.

Photoshop :: How Layers Are Going To Interact Based On Their Opacity

Nov 17, 2012

If I have 2 layers at 50% opacity and a white layer underneath, those combined layers should equal 100% opacity and so I should not be able to see anything below the lower layer. Instead what I find is that you have to stack over 15 layers at 50% before they even start to appear opaque (and at 15 they still aren't).

What's the math going on behind here? I would have assumed that, with an 8-bit image, you have 256 levels of transparency so at 50% you've got both layers at 128; 128-128 = 0 or no transparency so why does photoshop still allow something to be visible underneath that? While we're at it, why does 100% look fully opaque but 99% looks dramatically different without a layer underneath? Maybe the math is adding up but 50% opacity is actually more like 5% opaque?

Is there a blending mode I can use that will similate the build up of opacity more accurately? I'm really annoyed with the fact I can't really predict how layers are going to interact based on their opacity; I wish I at least understood the science behind it so I could alter my process to produce the results I want.

GIMP :: Time-based Gradient Brush

Dec 13, 2011

I'm quite new to the GIMP, though fairly experienced with Photoshop. I have a rather unusual requirement, and I'm wondering if the GIMP can meet it.

I'd like to set up a gradient and then draw freehand trails with a brush that gets its colours from the gradient, sawtooth style. So far, so good; I know how to do that.

What's unusual, is that I'd actually like the colours to cycle through the gradient by time, not by distance. In other words, if I move the mouse slowly, the colour sequence will be compressed, and if I move it faster, it'll be stretched out. Is this possible?

I seem to recall that there's an animated brush feature... maybe that's the way to go? Can it animate through a sequence of colours? If you're wondering why I want this, it's because I want to emulate what it would look like if you looked at the Crab Pulsar (from, say, a mere few AU) via a small pocket mirror, and rocked the mirror rapidly by hand.

By the way, 2.7 doesn't seem to have the "Use colors from gradient" option for the brush. Had to revert to 2.6 to match the online tutorials I found... In fact, in 2.7 I couldn't find any way to paint with a gradient (except "random").

GIMP :: Tile Based Images - Pasting Transparent Pixels

Mar 5, 2013

I have been using Gimp for a lot of "tile based" images, which feature layers composed of several "tiles" pasted into those layers. However, I just recently started creating transparent tiles, and pasting them.

One of the strangest things I have run into here is that I don't seem to be able to move my selection ( Floating Layer? ) if the opacity on the source pixels is 0.25 or less. Specifically, I do not get the usual "drag box" when I hover over the transparent pixels. Instead, I get the "anchor box" ( which seems to crop the pasted area before anchoring ). I tried this on a composite image with some more transparent pixels ( 0.25 ) and some more opaque pixels ( 0.26 ), and the "drag box" appears only over the more opaque pixels.

Why this might be happening? It could be that this is just context-sensitive cursor behavior which varies on transparency, and if so, is there another way to move the pasted selection?

GIMP :: How To Get Images To Print Out Based On Real Life Inches

Oct 14, 2013

I am completely new to gimp I have an image that is 8in x 6in. It was previously edited in Photoshop on another computer thats how I know the actual size. When I load it into gimp, the image size is in real life the same, I can take a ruler to the screen and it measures 8in x 6in at 100% zoom. However, according to gimps rulers, the image is over 11in x 7in. So I measured what is one inch on gimps ruler and it is actually 3/8in in real life. When I create a grid to overlay the image, through Filters-Render-Patterns-Grid and I make the settings to be 1in x 1in, it too shows up based on gimps ruler measurements. I have the ruler set up in inches but a gimp inch is not a real life inch, and this shows up when I scale the image to 8in x 6in it actually makes the image 5 1/2in x 3 3/4in in real life when printed out. How can I get gimp to display a real life inch and how can I get my images to print out based on real life inches.

GIMP :: Coloring Outline Drawing And Removing The Outline?

Jan 10, 2013

I have a black-and-white outline drawing that I want to color in using the "Bucket Fill" tool. There are two things I'd like to do to make it easier:

1. Is there a way to prevent Bucket Fill from leaking through small gaps in the drawing? Usually what happens is, I fill in one region, and then suddenly a much larger region gets filled in. I then have to examine the borders of the region for a small opening, close the gap with black, and then try again. Is there a feature that lets me say e.g. "Don't fill through gaps less than 4 pixels wide"?

2. Once I'm done coloring, I want to remove the black outline to make a more realistic, less cartoony image. However, it's tedious to go and paint over every segment of the outline with the color of its adjoining regions. What I want to do is essentially: Replace every black pixel in the image with the color of the closest non-black pixel. Is there a feature that does this?

Also, if there are third-party plugins that do these things, that would work just as well.
