Did 2.8 remove the ability to drag and copy a layer from one image to another? This does not work when I try opening more than one image and dragging a layer between the two images by switching between tabs.
Is there some default box I need to uncheck or some new way to do this?
I have been using gimp now for about 2 months and have just upgraded my OS to Mavericks and upgraded Gimp to 2.8.8.
Upon doing this I seem to have lost the ability to copy/cut an image or part thereof from one open image into another... Example:
I have an image window open with a picture a car and I have an image window open with a race track back ground.
I want to copy the car from image 1 into image 2, but for some reason I cannot do this function anymore. When attempting it, once the item is copies to the clipboard and I then swap to the second image, when I paste as a new layer it pastes the clipboard from that image and not the image from the first window...
I have a GIF image that I need to add something to, but I don't want to add it to every single individual layer. Is there a way to add it over or behind the entire GIF so that it remains static while the GIF's frames cycle - like a watermark or something?
Or if not, is there maybe a script-fu that copies and merges a selected layer over every other individual layer automatically, without messing them up?
I know I'll probably have to just end up manually adding it to each layer, (so many layers...).
I'm trying to write a script to batch process a number of files. I want the script to open file a*.png, convert black color to alpha and paste image b*.png on top of a*.png (both are the same size). The script converts black to alpha, but it doesn't paste image.

I'd like to be to select a layer groups and copy them over to another pre-existing image.

The closet I've found is a kind of paste where you do this: drag the tab of the origin image over to the tab of the target image. The result is a new layer in the target image called "dropped buffer". However, the entire origin image is imported flattened.
I've been trying other drag and drop operations, but without success. Usually when I drop the selection to the target image, the icon under the mouse dissapears, and nothing actually happens.
I thought this might be a window manager problem. But I get the same results across kde, gnome and xfce.
I can create a signature with image and text as in attachment, (not sure even did that) "DARN"but would like to be able to type directly on a jpeg or gif etc.

1: SAI has an ability to rotate the view without rotating the image itself.(rotating a graphics tablet to comfortably get the pen stroke right.) Is there any way this could be implemented into a new update of GIMP?
2: SAI has really good pressure sensitivity and natural *smooth* pressure strokes. I've kinda noticed GIMP is geared more towards Mouse/Touch pad art creation; is there any way to get pressure sensitivity into the program?
I'm afraid to use GIMP anymore because the whole program takes about 20 minutes to load, from clicking the application icon on my desktop. Once it's up though, it functions well. Even after I close it out, and end up clicking the application icon again, it takes another 20 minutes to load up.
how to import / drag / place more than 1 image into a document. I have over 100 images that I have to repeat the same process to, and yes I know actions, but I need to go into each individual layer and adjust accordingly and would save me less time then to open each file and repeat. a crop for example would take 1 minute with multiple layers, a crop in a batch might take 5 min especially if there are a few hundred. then after that I can just choose a script and export layer to files. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a task that I repeat all the time, where I have about 20 digital photos that are all taken of something the same size, at the same magnification, but not centered identically. I then need similarly centered, identical size and shape cropped images for all of the images. In Photoshop, a friend with the exact same task solves this by opening all of the images, making a rectangular selection of the appropriate size and shape by eye on the first image, and then dragging this rectangular selection from this first image into each other open images and hand-positioning in each image as he drags it in, so that all of the selections for cropping the images are the same shape and size, and can be individually positioned, rapidly. This exact solution is perfect for this task, and although it works great in Photoshop, selections can't be dragged intact from image to image in the same way in gimp 2.6.11 on ubuntu 11.04/gnome 2.32.1/linux 2.6.38-8 generic , so I am looking for a way to accomplish something similar.

When i try to deop the image onto the other one, I get a blue line outlinging to windows, but the image will not 'merge' and it just bounces back to its own window.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two similar images where the subject has moved between the images. I have them in the same file as two separate layers and am using the subtract layer mode to identify where they differ, (roughly!).
I want to be able to use the subtract layer as a completely new layer so that I can make edits to it. The only way I have found to do this at the moment is to 'copy visible', but this still brings other elements that I don't want from where the layers overlap.
When I try to drag an image into a project in GIMP 2.8 nothing happens. I read in the manual to drop images into the space above the toolbox with the GIMP logo in it, but that doesn't work either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Gimp 2.8.2 on Linux. I've configured the UI to single-windowmode and have opened multiple images, each with a tabbed display.
It is my understanding that I should be able to grab a layer from oneimage and drag-and-drop it onto the tab of another image in order toappend a copy of that layer in the new image. I have not been able to dothis. I'm grabbing a layer from the layers dialog and dragging it to the tab-thumbnail, but the layer is not copied to the new image.
A couple of comments for the UI designers:
* I find the [X] icons on the image tabs to be a real problem getting accidentally selected and dismissing the image when attempting to quickly select another tab. I would prefer another tab dismissal method such as right-click-menu close.
* Some user control over the tabs would be good. For example, I would like to see the the vertical height of of the tabs be smaller and have the option of displaying file names and/or icons.
I have V3, can you tell me does V4 has the ability to copy and paste transitions yet? I'm sick of doing 100 transitions and having to edit each one when I want the same each time.
If not, is it coming on V5?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the Layer via copy cut plug-in at Deviantart but when I tried to copy/cut a layer I got a message saying that it crashed. So I foolishly uninstalled the old 2.8 version and re-installed the latest 2.8.8. However when I tried to install the copy cut plug-in again nothing happens. I was able to install the noise generator, but it just won't do the Layer copy cut. Is there a way around this? I've tried so many times that at this point I'd rather go back to the previous 2.8 version. How can I find the original 2.8 Download.

I open a .jpg file and then using the Rectangle select tool highlight a section of the image. I then click CTRL+X and it actually cuts the whole layer showing me just the empty background.
All I want to do, is open the .jpg, copy or cut a section from it to a new image.

I have lost the ability to see my layers. I created an image and when I open it, I can see by the text displayed at the top of the image that it has five layers. However, when I click "Open the Layers Dialog", the five layers don't show. Perhaps I've locked it somehow? It was saved as a .xcf. Am very new to GIMP.

also, when i select a a single, or group of layers and move them around in the palette, i thought it used.
I am making a video in Nero Vision 10 and need to cut out the screen of a tv so that I can layer the TV over an image/video so it looks as though it is on the screen. I enclose a screenshot of the project. 'Transform-tools-crop' only cuts in straight lines so I wonder which device I should use which can cut out an odd bespoke shape? You can see in the uploaded image from the project how the image currently cannot fill the frame without covering it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Gimp 2.8.4 on Ubuntu 13.04 Linux (64-bit) and I'm trying touse the "Bevel and Emboss" layer effect on an image which I copied fromanother image. Here is what I've done:
1. Loaded image 'A' into Gimp
2. Selected a portion of it
3. Used "/Edit/Copy" to copy the selection
4. Used "/Edit/Paste As/New image" to create a new image from the selection
5. In the new window for the new image, "/FX-Foundry/Layer effects/Bevel and Emboss"
6. When the "Bevel and Emboss" window opens, I accept the defaults and click "Ok"
The filter starts to run and then stops with an error message. Here is the message I get:

I've tried using GIMP many times, yet I've accomplished very little, given all of GIMP's functionality. For example:
If I want to select part of an image and copy it to another area or to a new image/layer, and also FEATHER the edges, here's how I'd do it in an old graphics app I often used years ago:
1. Select the area.2. Hold Ctrl while moving selection with Move tool.3. Use the slider to soften the edges to my liking.4. Press Enter to anchor selection. Done.
And there were sliders also for opacity and other things. So very SIMPLE because the prog. was designed very intuitively. How would I accomplish the same in GIMP? Well, most of the time, I WOULD ACCOMPLISH NOTHING! At best, I'd enter values into the box, not like the result, enter new values, repeat. And that's on a good day.
Somebody write a SCRIPT/PLUGIN that allows the use of sliders exactly as described above! I desperately want to be a HAPPY GIMP user, but I'm growing ever more hopeless. I don't want to turn on my older PC just to use a graphics app that actually lets me get things done.
