What's the easiest way to send a project to a collaborator outside my facility? Everything will remain in Smoke. All media files exist at both locations so we just need to be able to share the project files. Is an archive the best bet?
The shop where I work shoots with Sony HVR z7u cameras. The small memory recording unit on the back of the camera records m2t files. Smoke does not seem to recognize these files natively. (Neither did FCP without a downloadable Sony driver). Is there a recommended workflow for dealing with m2t files?
what if wanna pass/share my project file to others for them to tinker with or to continue the work, what are the files/folders that i needed to share and where can i find them?
I have png files with alphas sometimes Smoke will import them as a still frame that I can change the duration of . Other times it will import it with 23.98 time code and then I have to freeze it to extend the duration.
Any time the gateway scans a directory, which has a clip that has stereo audio, Smoke hangs. Is this a bug? Specifically the file was a Canon 7D file which had audio recorded with it. The crash does not happen when we try a file without audio or a file whose audio has been converted to mono. The file was directly from the camera. Same thing happens when it is a Prores HQ file with Stereo audio.
I downloaded a trial version and installed but some reason I can not see my "Volume" (external FW800 G-Tech Drive 7200 rpm) in order to import files into the project that I created. I'm actually running a MacBook Pro (13 inch)and the latest version of OSX. I'm salivating to try this out but I'm stuck.
Trying to import some still images into Smoke 2013. There are 15 files, all from the same source, all the same format (.png), however, when I open the folder in the mediahub, it reads 2 or 3 of the files and nothing else. The other files are in the folder and are no different than the ones Smoke does read, yet for some reason the other files are nowehere to be found through the mediahub. This isn't the first time I've had something like this happen.
I am experimenting with Smoke 2013 pre-trial and I am having issues with importing images and video with alpha channels.
1. If I have a layered Photoshop file or png with an alpha channel (a still frame lower third), I see that I can import it as a multi layered clip, but what is the best way to have it in the sequence to show up properly?
2. If I have a QuickTime in animation format or Pro Res4444 format with an embedded alpha, how can I import that file to show and cut it on a top layer to animate above my video?
I had to uninstall Smoke earlier to attempt to get the export function working. In doing so I had to run this line of code in the terminal: sudo rm -rf /usr/discreet/
When i reinstalled and eventually got it working again Smoke didn't see the project i had spent a day working on.
Is it possible Smoke deleted my project when i ran the line of code or uninstalled?
I just spent the last couple of hours programming 28 stills with edges in CFX. I phsically clicked on save project repeatedly in those hours, especially once I hit a MAJOR milestone. I added a shadow cast node in action and my system locked up. I was forced to force quit. When I reopened my project, I found that I lost a couple of hours worth of work. In the months going on year of using this editor, I find that smoke 2013 is very well intentioned, but seriously lacking in very basic functionality. Putting out a product that is touted as a powerful editor that doesn't have a audio cross-fade node (lost in EXT version), can't add a simple outline to a clip with a button click (the reason I spent hours adding a hard shadow and changing layer priority for each of the 28 clips and finally and MOST importantly, saving EACH AND EVERY TIME the editor clicks save to completion is simply doing a diservice to a quality product. when a person clicks file-save project, the project should save fully.
Whats the dealing with importing TWs to Smoke? I have a show that's 70% keyframed with timewarps and need a way other then baking the effect to bring it into Smoke. It's comming from FCP7 and we have Automatic Duck but neither the XMLs or AAF bring anything other then the first speed of the clip. Any way to retain the keyframes?
I have Smoke (same version) running on two seperate Macs. Each Mac has an external thunderbolt drive for the media storage.
I worked on my project at home on Mac #1, and assumed I could bring in my external drive and use it with Mac #2.
When I try to add my drive from home to Mac #2, it creates ManagedFolder1. Which of course doesn't have my project in it- my project is on ManagedFolder0.
I suppose this may be caused by the fact I already have a ManagedFolder0 on a different external drive for this Mac, right? So I removed that drive, assuming I could then re-add the drive from home and allow access to the 2nd ManagedFolder0 with my project.
It just shows my old projects from the other drive still, but everything is broken inside of them. This makes sense as the drive is disconnected.
I did a project in SMK2013 in trial mode on an iMac. Mostly unmanaged media - links to ProRes Qts from Resolve. Sadly, I forgot to archive it before the 30 day trial expired.
I just installed 2013 on my main Mac Pro, and it's all licensed, and good to go - beware of a licensing issue with OS 10.8, by the way... (I'll write another post about that.)
I copied all of the linked source media to the new system, and using the MediaHub, I can see the projects on the iMac (even though I can't launch the app anymore), so my plan was to bring the sequences and rendered files over via Wire, then re-link to the ProRes source media on the licensed system. Easy, right?
I can copy the sequences over just fine, but in the conform tab - I can't get any of the Resolve files to relink. I've unlinked the shots, and set the file path straight to the prores media folder - the only thing different is the name of the drive it's linked to.
any column I choose to match - every file turns red. I've double checked the file names, the timecodes, etc... Everything matches up exactly, and yet it never finds a match, showing a conflict in every field I try to use as a match.
I thought i might have better luck if the media folder was imported into the project, and then manually set that folder a conform search location - but I crash every time i've tried that.
I have a project with proxy is on. In some situation i want the proxy to be off. Like for example when viewing my timeline edit. the output resolution (in viewer) is using the proxy ( lores). How can i disable this ? can i do that without turn off the proxy in project setting ? how to tell the viewer to display the hires version not the proxy?
I just installed the Smoke software and tried to open a new project as a test file, but after i made the file and made a user i clicked the "Start" button and it just says "Unable to load video device AJA_OE2K" and makes me quit out of the application.
This is similar to something I have asked for before regarding managing media in remote/networked machines. But I can't find a way to delete media (individual clips or folders) from a nother project within my machine without switching to/loading up that project. At present in 2012 and as far back as I can remember I have had the ability to move and manage media withing other projects on the host machine as well as remote/networked machine.
Is there a button/preference I'm missing as this is integral to the workflow I use.
some projects suddenly disappeared from the selection list that comes up when you start Smoke. The project files are still there and I didn't mess with them either. Is there any way to "refresh" the project listing?
I lost an edit I was working on and Time Machine has complete backups for the past several days. I can see and find the backup copy in Time Machine in /usr/discreet/project/ . I can extract it from Time Machine. But how can I make Smoke aware of it and open it?
I tried a few things like I have an existing project called "/usr/discreet/project/Project1", I removed it and put my backup in the same place with the same name, but that doesn't work either.
Just deleted PR4, and installed PR5.Opening an existing project takes an extremely long time (maybe 20-30 mins? guessing here)The Smoke loading screen shows something like "Connecting Control Surfaces"..
When setting up a new project, I'm unable to change the bit depth for the project. It's set to 8-bit and ghosted. The graphics render button has a selector but when clicked it doesn't bring up the drop down.
My guess is that it has something to do with my hardware configuration (read: I need to upgrade my GPU) .
There was a time, probably 2012 SP1, when smoke startup would take max. 30seconds.Now with 2012 SP2 after selecting a project smoke just hangs at the "Initializing shades" phase for almost 1min. making startups a major 2min.
How to create automatically for each project, a desktop library identical with the same folders (DigitCut, Elemts, Conformation, Rushes, Audio,...), each graphic artists will be able to work with the same tree?
First: I ordered the Smoke 2013 (floating-)licence through a german reseller a week ago and I still got no answer. Is this a normal "new years eve" delay?
Second: The Smoke installation is on a computer that's OS was actually cloned from another computer. The HostName, LocalHostName and ComputerName were changed, but Backburner still insists in using the "original" name given at the OS-Installation. So if the other "clone-computer" is running, Backburner gets in trouble and is stuck on waiting. During the troubleshooting process I turned on websharing to access [URL] ..... This led to the result, that anytime i restart the machine the computername is changed to 0.0.0.0 and the backburner wount work. No way, yet, to bring this back to normal.
Third: Waiting for the smoke-licence I already begun working on the project. Now it seems that I'll have to do a clean install of the system to get it finally running. But I do not want to loose the work so far. Is there a way to bring the actual project back into an new installation of OS/Smoke without having to archive it which does not work at the moment?
I just installed my Smoke2013 SP2 yesterday, and today I want to restore my project. From Mr. Grant Kay tutorial, I saw there's restore button once he double click the restore folder. But I can't see that Restore button.
Using Smoke EXT1 and a previous user archived his project using the old school method; media and setups seperatly instead of just selecting the project as a whole.
I've draged the media into a library and restored that easy enough but can not find the details of how to recover the setups from the tar file in the archive. It does not show up in the media pannel at all, just an emply folder. How to get these setups loaded into a project?
I just imported a bunch of 4k clips via the gateway using the backburner. Is it normal that it took about 2 minutes per frame to render? I had 36 clips, 53 000 frames in total, and it took about 8 hours to get them all in (with store local copy and proxies turned on).
Smoke 2012 SAP2 SP4 and Smoke 2013 SP2 (Smoke Classic Keyboard Shortcuts) Mac Pro 4,1 OS X 10.6.7 12 GB RAM NVIDIA Quadro 4000 14 TB RAID (Areca)
Graphics import into the library with a default length of 1 frame. Is there a way to lengthen that so I don't have to zoom way in to grab the edge of the clip?
