AutoDesk Smoke :: Changing Media Drive In Setup Via Commenting Out Current Drive
Jul 30, 2012
While changing the media drive in Smoke setup via commenting out the current drive isn't a complicated process, I personally would find a more streamlined option useful. Something on the startup screen would be great: select project, user, media drive. When using FW800 drives, I typically try to have a discreet project drive that has everything on there for the current project. With the larger Thunderbolt raids, I am going back a little to the old system of having active storage and archive storage. However, when thunderbolt prices come down, I'll most likely have a separate drive for each project again.

I have Smoke (same version) running on two seperate Macs. Each Mac has an external thunderbolt drive for the media storage.
I worked on my project at home on Mac #1, and assumed I could bring in my external drive and use it with Mac #2.
When I try to add my drive from home to Mac #2, it creates ManagedFolder1. Which of course doesn't have my project in it- my project is on ManagedFolder0.
I suppose this may be caused by the fact I already have a ManagedFolder0 on a different external drive for this Mac, right? So I removed that drive, assuming I could then re-add the drive from home and allow access to the 2nd ManagedFolder0 with my project.
It just shows my old projects from the other drive still, but everything is broken inside of them. This makes sense as the drive is disconnected.

CLIP MGT: Unmanaged media contained in selection. Store media on Wire?

Is it asking me if I want to store a local copy or stonifize the media?

I'm putting together a new system partly to run Photoshop, Bridge, and Camera Raw, and I have a question about the optimal hard drive configuration. Software is CS3 running on Windows XP Pro SP2.
With three physical drives, I would probably do it like this:
1. 10k RPM - OS, programs
2. 10k RPM - ?
3. 7.2k RPM - Assets
Where is the best place for the Windows page file and the Photoshop scratch disk?
Or would I be better off going with four (less expensive) 7.2k RPM drives, in which case the OS/programs, page file, scratch disk, and assets could all have their own drives?
Many thanks.

Having a strange issue with a 6TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual. I can't get the drive to work in Media Browser in Mavericks OS-X. It shows up in Finder and if I click on "Local Drives" in Media Browser it is there but I cannot access it. I've tried connecting it via Thunderbolt and USB3 and no luck either way. Oddly enough, it works fine via USB3 on my PC. I've tried it on a MacBook Pro and a 2013 MacPro and it's a bust on both. I'm running the latest versions of Mavericks and Premiere Pro CC. What might be tripping up Media Browser or if there's a way I should reformat the drive. Currently it is Raid 0, Mac OS Extended (Journaled)).

I've been using Apple's Aperture program, but now that I'm subscribed to CS Cloud, I want to try Lightroom.I installed Lightroom. During the installation process, I created a new folder for storing information about photos @ Users/myname/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat
Then I read an article about exporting images from Aperture to Lightroom that said you should set things up on an external hard drive, because your image collection is eventually going to be too big for your internal hard drive.
I'm not a photographer (yet), but I have thousands of images that I use on several different websites. My biggest project is an online encyclopedia of life that will feature countless images of plants and animals.I have six websites, and I decide to create a library for each of the first five, plus half a dozen libraries for the biology site (Mammals, Birds, Plants, etc.). And let's also say I set up shop on an external hard drive.
Will the information for all these libraries be stored in the folder Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat on my computer? Or do I need to create a new .lrcat folder on my external hard drive? Will I need a separate .lrcat folder for each library?
I'd prefer to export all my images from Aperture into Lightroom in a library (or libraries) in my internal hard drive - for now. When it gets too big, then I can move it to an external hard drive.

I have LR 5.2 and I move files off onto a removable drive as a back-up and it allows me to share the pictures with them when they sometimes lose them. Windows 7 routinely assigns the drive to the letter M:, N:, and sometime P: and apparently I cannot see the folders unless the drive is assigned the same letter as it was when I imported the pictures into the catalog. The folders don’t even show up in the library, but if I do an import all of the folders appear as valid destinations within LR. How can I fix this? The first picture is a screen shot of the library; notice that the year 2013 is missing. The second screen shot is what appears when I go to import; note that 2013 appears. The folders simply do not appear in LR except when I attempt import.
When I look at N: in my “working catalog” it shows it as having catalog “AUMC” but the folders in it belong to the part of my working catalog that I have moved to a different external drive since they’re old picture I don’t use much. They all have question marks, but they are resolved with I attach the external drive with those folders on it.

1) I'm unable to designate an internal drive as a scratch disc (non boot drive). Drive is clean, empty, I've chkdsk'd, permissions set to full, I can read and write files on it, and I'm able to designate it as scratch for Illustrator but PS6 doesn't like it. Says I don't have access.
2) I upgraded to PS6 extended (cloud) and after a week it now hangs during startup at loading Nik Color Efex Pro 4 plugin. Hangs for about 3 minutes before continuing.

I moved images from my harddrive to an external drive.
I opened Lightroom.
Noticed there was a question mark by the photo folder I needed.
I synchronized the folders. Nada.
I rememebered I moved the images (first line ^^)
I re-imported the images from the external drive into Lightroom.
These images (other than one that was marked previously with a blue label) look completely untouched - completely original files - even though I spent hours working on them.
I am glad the images weren't deleted BUT re-doing 600 images will be a MAJOR FAIL if I can't figure out how to import the images with the settings / developments I did beforehand.

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.
I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited images are not on my desktop.....
I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.
I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.

I'm copying RAW files from a shoot onto my network RAID drive in a per-album folder, from where I then import into a new LR catalog (I'm using LR 4.1) on my Windows laptop for that album.
I'm finding that editing RAW files on a network drive from a wireless laptop is awfully slow (not to mention not being able to continue the work offline somewhere else), so I'd like to cache those files on my speedy SSD drive just until I'm done editing and exporting/publishing that album.
I back up my per-album catalog onto the network folder alongside the RAW files since that's my IT-managed master repository. When I'm done editing, I'd purge the cached files and just keep the catalog previews on my limited capacity SSD.
So, is there a way to tell LR to, for one/all files imported from a location (in my case a network folder), look in an alternate location for the identical files? Since I create per-album catalogs in per-album folders, there wouldn't be filename clashing. Either LR can provide this caching behavior on its own or I'd manually copy files from the network folder to a local folder and tell LR to look there first.
I don't really want to make copies of files into secondary folders within LR since then it's a hassle to merge edits on the cached copy to its master copy (I haven't done this, but I'd imagine so).

Working in Smoke 2013 pre-trial v3, and I've been wondering why every clip I import has the resize filter? Every video and graphic in the XML has a resize filter even though they are they same aspect ratio as the sequence. I've tried this with a NTSC and 1080i sequence and they've both had the same issues. I even imported a clip through the media hub and I had the same result. When I look at the clip in Final Cut, it is the same setting as the sequence so I don't have to render. In Smoke, I enter the resize editor and I don't see any resizing.

I've been trying to import a XML from FCP (xml version 2), bun everytime I only get a timeline with unlinked media...
I placed the XML one directory above my media. But when I drag the XML into my library (having Store Local Copy turned on), I only get the "empty" timeline...
When I try to relink my media from the gateway, it's not relinking anything (it says, no video and audio found). Is there no way to import an XML without having to import the original media into my library? Also, no matter what kind of clip I'm importing, it always soft imports my clips, although store local copy is turned on...
Attached is a picture with the settings for my xml import (and on top the unlinked xml, which says SOFT, although, as you can see on the bottom of the screen store local copy is enabled).
