AutoCad :: Make Block To Automate Design Of Typical Cross-bracing Connection Plates
Apr 5, 2013
Attached is a small scale sketch that I'm trying to work with.
Drawing3.dwg
I want to make a block to automate the design of typical cross-bracing connection plates relative to the angle of the x-brace. Since the angle varies from one structure to another, I need a quick way to draw these.
Make a dynamic block that would locate to the intersection of the beam and the x-brace. Then I'd adjust a "rotating reference line" from the block to align with the x-brace and then offset the plate edge to mate with the beam web. Sounds easy, but...
The parts that I need dynamic are:
1) the edge of the plate that mates to the beam web (since different beams have differing web thicknesses - this needs to be adjustable).
2) the edge of the beam flange (to make the line type hidden below the beam flange)
3) the rotation of the reference line to align with the cross brace line (so the holes are properly aligned)
I was originally trying to achieve this with a rotate parameter, but had no luck. So I just thought of replacing the rotate parameter with a polar stretch parameter and it's the closest I've been to resolving the problem, but there's still a funny quirk. When I align the reference line in the block to the cross brace angle, the two other adjustments (web and flange locators) rotate too and become skewed. How can I keep those other two beam adjustments horizontal?

I am trying to make a typical column and row line layout for a roof plan. I know in acad architecture this is very easy. I am using regular 2011. I went to one of the preset palettes and saw a detail grid. What is that even used for? I basically draw them out at this point in a template.

I've got a strange situation regarding the bolted connection generator. For some background, I made another post a while back about editing the hole sizes for Flat Head Cap Screws so that the heads were below flush. That thread is here:
[URL]
Basically, I increased the countersink diameters Clearance.xls and then found that the Design Accelerator doesn't use that spreadsheet for its data source. More research led me to this file:
C:UsersPublicDocumentsAutodeskInventor 2013Design DataDesign AcceleratorTablesHolesAnsi Unified Screw Threads.xml
So I edited the diameters in this file and tested the design accelerator and everything was great. [I kept a backup of the original...]
Since then, another thing that has bothered me was counterbore numbers for socket head cap screws. The Cbore diameters don't match the tools that we have and the depths are always right on size. i.e. for a 1/4" SHCS, the bore is 7/16" diam x 0.250" deep. In reality our cbore tools are about 0.406 and we cut them about 0.265 deep to make sure the head is below flush.
I went in to these two XML files and edited them (and kept backups): Ansi Metric M Profile.xml Ansi Unified Screw Threads.xml
Everything seems to be cool, except for one scenario. When I create a counterbored joint for a metric SHCS, the cbore diameter is always 16.00 mm diameter and too deep, regardless of its size. I searched the XML file and what it's doing *does not* match the data in the XML file. I monkeyed around a little more and could not get the counterbores to come out right.
So at that point, I renamed all the files to restore my original backups to the "factory" ones. I assumed that I screwed up the formatting or something in the data table and I'd just try it again. However, even after I restored my backups and removed my edited files, the metric counterbores are messed up.
What I don't understand is that changing the file "Ansi Unified Screw Threads.xml" *did* update the holes for English screw joints. But does the DA pull data for metric joints from somewhere OTHER than "Ansi Metric M Profile.xml"? And if it does use this XML file, why isn't it working? The original data has been restored, but the behavior is not behaving correctly.

Is there a way of using design accelerator to rivet fix as you would with bolted connection ? I know that by initiating the bolted connection command there is no option to use rivet to complete the connection as is done with bolts. It would be great if rivets from the content centre could be somehow imported into the bolted connection component generator (or readily available) to add like bolted connection or if there are any 'workaround's' to produced similar results ?

I'm having some problems using some existing MX highway design data I've brought into Civil3D using the genio import extension. Basically I can bring in all the alignments that I want to be able to use but am unsure where to go next in terms of creating a proposed profile line. My goal is to be able to pull out long sections and cross sections based on this data. Ideally I'd like to avoid doubling up on work in MX and Civil3D as much as possible.

I've been working with inventor professionally for about a year now doing piping and vessels for the oil field. This also involves a lot of pipe supports and platforms.
I'm trying to streamline the process right now by coming up with a way to make some adaptive bracing that I can reuse so I don't have to model it over and over. Most of the engineer drawings I get are basically the same; 2d lines for beams with work points for the bracing and typical connection details.
I start with a skeletal model and use frame gen to drop my beams in. But bracing is where I run into difficulty. I get it done but its just tedious and time consuming
Is their a way I can make a reusable adaptive or flexible bracing for this task? Here's some pics of what I've been sinking around with to try and automate this (I haven't found a good solution yet).
1. Created my skeleton
2. Dropped beams in
3. Created bracing template
4. Dropped bracing temp in assembly
5. Constrained it into place
6. used make parts to place the gusset plates into my assembly
7. gusset plates fully parametric
I'd like to have a better process of doing this. Ideally I'd like to drop a whole brace sub-assembly (gussets, brace and bolts) in to the main assembly and constrain to the drawing specified work points and be done with it.

Just got a Space Navigator the other day, pulled it out of the box all excited that i would be able to rotate models about the center of the camera, which would allow me to get into really tight spots, rotate the model and not have other parts of the model move in front of the camera, therefore blocking my view of what i was trying to see. So out it comes, all software loaded, inventor is open with a tidy structural assembly sittign there waiting to be manipulated by my new shiny toy, and uh no. CAN'T ROTATE ABOUT THE CAMERA! AARRGGGH. right bummer.
I'm pretty sure its an Inventor problem since i know for a fact that you can rotate about the center of the camera usign this device in 3ds max. The 3D navigation tools in inventor are crap anyway, the feature of being able to rotate about camera center should be native in inventor.
using any of 3D connexions devices in Inventor and maybe they have a work around for this. I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that with practice people have been able to 'fly' down pipes in Inventor. But my experience so far would mean that once you get to a bend in the pipe and you rotate the view, you would just rotate yourself straight out of the pipe.

I am trying to annotate a floor plan to show the location/orientation of section, elevation and detail drawings. The labels must also indicate the appropriate drawing cross reference. (basically a circle with a arrow, text inside circle showing drawing cross reference). My question is - is there an automated way/library to insert such labels or do I have to create each of them from individual elements and make a block?

how to make a cross from scratch. I'll put my own design to it, but I simply do not how to go about making something in Photoshop from scratch. Some people make items that do not look like paint, but look like a 3d Cross. Is this done with Photoshop or something else I wish my college offered classes for Photoshop, but they do not. Everything is Computer Science, and Math.

I am just having some difficulties using the standard UKIE subassemblies where the carriageway is not showing the parameters correct. See the drawing attached. Eg:
1) The properties does not show the side correctly it has a zero value (not much of a issue as i can use the mirror command) (drawing subassembly)
2) I am unable to choose any superelevation on the subassembly . Now this is what causing me problems.
I have already re-installed the software from scratch and have also downladed the latest service pack.

I have just finished my design and I wanted to insert a title block and annotations with pictures using the paperspace option. I want to print the design out onto A1 Paper (80000mm x 56000mm) to a 1:100 scale.
What I want to know is what is the dashed line, how do I make the paperspace A1 size and a 1:100 scale, as well as wanting to know how to make the title block and add annotations to the design.
One problem I am facing is that any line I do create comes out bold as well as when I zoom into the drawing itself every line is bold. Why is this?

Working in AutoCAD LT 2010.
Drawing format 2007 or 2010
bedit, OK if you regenall after
refedit, Ok if you regenall ofter
design Center - display order goes out the window. The inserted block is redefined but the rest of the drawing loses all its display order. sortents (127, 33, 51, etc) and displayorderctl does nothing, either before or after the block is redefined. hatches and blocks just jump to the front (display order shows as order of drawn not order as moved to) Regenall does nothing.
absolute nightmare with display order managed elevations (solid hatch, baconies, windows, multple buildings, all overlaying!!)

I have been playing around with Inventor (moving across from Solidworks) and am wondering how I 'detail plates' I am becomeing familiar with the Frame Generator to create all of my members, but it seems quite disconnected in the creation process create a plate.
I currently am creating the 3D sketch (in a part) creating the (base) plate in the same part and then in the assebley I am using the frame Generator (See image) to create the members.
How to correctly include the plates as part of the design process.
