AutoCad :: Creating A 3D School Map
Dec 8, 2011
For my school project, I've been assigned to update the school maps. I use AutoCAD 2012, but I also have Revit and Inventor on my school computer. The problem that I am having is that the maps I were given are in 2D (they're basically blueprints of each floor). My teacher wants me to make it more modern-looking, meaning he wants me to be able to show depth and make the map more 3D. If you're not sure what I mean, he wants me to make it look something like this [URL]....... except that it would be for one school building, and the room numbers and names have to be visible for all three floors.
Having learned only basic knowledge of CAD and Revit, I am stuck on how to create the "layered" school map. Is there any way to do it on CAD, or should I use another program? Can I use the current 2D blueprints, or do I need to create a new set of diagrams? (the 2D blueprints look like [URL].......

Is there a way to use iLogic to replicate the old-school method of replacing drawing references? (ie, where you'd temporarily rename the originally referenced file, open the drawing, and then point it to the new file after Inventor says it can't find the original)
Longer version:
I have an iLogic configurator that manipulates skeletal models, copies them out as new files, and swaps them into template drawings. The original skeletal model can be configured in several different ways (different features, surfaces, etc), so I have several template drawings set up for each model depending on the configuration.
The problem that I'm encountering involves the order in which the drawing is loaded and then has its references replaced. When first opened, the drawing loads the original skeletal model which doesn't have all the geometry of the "new" model for which the particular template drawing was intended. This makes most of my section and detail view constraints go belly-up. After subsequently replacing the model references with the "new" model with the correct geometry, the section and detail view constraints fail to resolve themselves, and my once-perfect detail drawing is ruined.
If I instead force the drawing to open with the new model from the git-go (via the workaround discussed above), everything loads perfectly. However, I haven't yet found a way to handle this automatically with iLogic.
FWIW, I am currently using the following code in a subroutine:
DESTINATIONDOC=ThisApplication.DOCUMENTS.Open(TemplateDrawing, False)
DESTINATIONDOC.SAVEAS(filePath&Left(PN,6)&".idw", False)
DimSTRNEWREFNAMEAsString
DimOREFFILEAsFILEDESCRIPTOR
[Code]....

I am not talking about the fancy 3-d apps that create these awesome metallic-loking 3 -d images,like this:II'm talking about linear art, flat and 2-d, like the old school comic books like Superman, Wonder Woman and Spider-Woman. That's what I am looking to do:I know there was some plug in that let you do them just like that, (after you typed in the name, you selected the letters and with some app, you manipulated them to look like old-school comic book lettering...)( I remember creating them old-school titles myself) with no fancy gradations, shines or bevels, it was just the lettering, and the effect of the 3dish thing...anyone knows what the plug in is, or if anything like that can be done with either Illustrator Cs4 or Photoshop Cs4?This is an example of what I did myself:But that was years ago when I had Illustrator 10, and after a long time with no acces to the net or computers, I'm back in the swing of things, but I can't remember the name of the program or plug in that allowed you to do those imges!

I just put up a video page for my school. It's not really targeted at the public yet. It's main for our school and church - Homework, assignments, previews, etc. But it's been fun learning with it and expiramenting. I did it all my self too, even took the pictures in the gallery (which needs expanding).

I have got a job to take school pictures where I will offer 3 portrait shots and 2 class shots for selection and I am looking for an easy way to add contact thumbnails onto a sheet that also contains a price list and order form as well as other details etc.
I have around 350 of these to do and have made up a sheet that contains all the other details as a PDF and as a In Design Master sheet and as a jpg file.
I am predominately a photographer and know little InDesign except what I have taught myself but not much. How to automate it and save me a whole load of time?

I'm trying to draw an object in 3D view, but I'm having trouble creating a circle in the Z direction. I know how to make circles on the X-Y plane but I can't figure out how to make one in the Z direction!
I'm making I attached a picture so you can see what the object looks like, and more or less the "3D circle"! I also attached the actual AutoCAD file that I'm working on. (The dimensions are 1:10)
I'm using AutoCAD version 2012.

I am trying to create a wall tag to do the following also see attached PDF:
Tag designation (text and number) generated from wall style (wallstyles:type) and be annotative.
Tag has 2 lines forming an L that I would like to preset (12" by the text and 18" long) but have the capability to be stretched/stretchable later on.
Tag has grip hand similar to doors which enables it to be attached to walls but doesn't change placement when wall is extended/trimmed/ moved or wall tag generates information from the wall it touches but if the wall moves the tag would stay but show and error or "X".

I have been creating lines using an azimuth and distance by using the transparent command 'zd. I recently tried entering an azimuth of 299.8 and it does not work. It just keeps repeating the "enter azimuth" command. I tried typing 299 for the azimuth and it created the line, but would not work when I typed 299.8.

I have a small project that I'm working on that inserts a new layout based on a user selected template size (A, B, C or D sizes). I need the program to insert the layout along with the titleblock geometry from the existing A, B, C, or D dwt files.
I know how to add a new blank layout. However, I'm having some trouble determing how to insert the titleblock geomtry. I've read a number of posts on here related to layouts, and while they were informative, none of them covered exactly what I need to do.

I'm recently using inventor a lot. But now IM try to make a .IDW template with my own line styles and thickness and stuff. This is what I do:
I open an exciting IDW file. I go to manage and click style editor. Then I create a new style. Called test style. I make sure I activate my new style and I go to layers, where I change the line weight from 0.51mm to 0.25 mm (example)
I save my change and close style editor... After that I save my copy as template (called test 6-1) and close the drawing. I open inventor and create a new file. Select the template I created. I get this style conflict.... I don't fully understand this error... How can I fix this problem?
When my new template opens, I check the line weight by the style editor but the weight detente change... Its still 0.51 mm.

I have searched this forum for a way to create 3D pdf files directly from Inventor or other "free" software but have not found anything that works very well. Today I found an answer, it is by using the Bentley Viewer. I had to "Save Copy As" my Inventor .iam file to "AutoCAD DWG Files.dwg". Then open it up inside the Bentley Viewer, go to the "Print pdf" button and select the "Print to 3D" button. It will even show some colors.

I am trying to create a centralized .arg file, so that if I make a change to this default profile all the machines will immediately see the change.
Currently I can only get this to work by importing the new profile, and i can't really ask 40 or so draughtsmen to re import when a change has been made.
AutoCad see's the file but does not update any changes.

I am transitioning from ACAD2008LT to ACAD2012 and am having a new problem when trying to create a new layer. I use many layers in my drawings and I set up specific layer naming conventions and use many layer property filters (filtered by layer name - for example, dimension layers named '*-Dim' and a property filter for '*-Dim') to manage the many layers.
In ACAD2008LT you could create a new layer while in a property filter view (in the Layer Properties Manager) and could type in the new layer name from that filtered view. If, after entering the new layer name, it matched the current property filter, it would remain in view, if it did not, it would automatically be moved to the appropriate filter or to the 'All Layers' view. That seems very logical.
In ACAD2012, as soon as I create a new layer while in a property filter view, the default layer name 'layer' does not match the filter parameters (say '*-Dim') and the new layer immediately moves to 'All Layers' before a new name can be entered. I have to then switch filter views back to 'All Layers' and find the new layer now named 'layer' and rename it there, trying to match the desired property filter name.
Am I missing something or is this an intended change from earlier versions? It was really nice to be able to see the layers in the property filter view while creating a new layer with a naming convention that matches that filter. In fact, I often create multiple new layers matching a property filter by copying and pasting similar layer names and just changing a character or two. In ACAD2008LT I could do that all from the appropriate property filter view.

I have a .net program that I would like to run using an icon. I've done this before and it worked, but now it's giving me an error.
I created the icon and command, I added the following to the command line:
^C^Cnetload "C://Program Files//my stuff//myProgram.dll” adp
(adp will lanch the program)
I get the following:
netload Assembly file name: "C://Program
Files//mystuff//myProgram.dll” adp
Cannot load assembly. Error details:
System.ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path.
at System.IO.Path.CheckInvalidPathChars(String path)

at ?A0xe1e1f031.NormalizeLoadFilename(String fname)
at Autodesk.AutoCAD.Runtime.ExtensionLoader.Load(String fileName)
at loadmgd()
Originally I tried using single slashes (/), but it still gives the same error. It seems to have trouble with the spaces in the file path. How do I work around that?
