May 14, 2012Just having a mess around drawing some 3d object and wondering if it is possible to use and image file for surface textures? like img, bmp etc.

AutoCAD Map 3D :: Surface Generation - Large Image File
Apr 20, 2011I have created a point cloud and surface from LiDAR data. The point cloud data was relatively large from what I am familiar with (approximately 30 GB all told), and ESRI ASC surface file (approximately 8 GB) was generated after a laborious wait. However, when I attempt to add the ASC file as a raster to view the surface, MAP 3D crashes and loses connection with my PC (i.e. window freezes, and I have to force MAP 3D to shutdown). My computer is fairly updated with quad core processor, 3 GB RAM, etc. Is this not enough power to process such a large image file, or have I error ?

Apr 11, 2013I am trying to edit the elevation of a JPEG image I have brought into my C3D 2010 file as an xref - I essentially want to 'drape' the image over the existing ground surface I have created to use for presentation purposes i.e. to show how our road layout is predominantly located along the ridge lines of the site.
Typically for other file types I would perform the following steps (using the classic toolbar): Grading > Edit Feature Line Elevations > Elevations from Surface > Select the existing ground surface > select object.
I don't seem to have the ability to select my jpeg xref using this approach... how else can I perform this task?

Apr 19, 2012Is there a way to select a portion of an image, and create patterns/textures that fill the selection?
If yes, is there the option of using my own images as the pattern/texture to be used? And is there the option to fill the selection either randomly or pattern-like? 'Noise' is not what I'm looking for.
Photoshop :: Are PSB Files (3D Textures And Smart Objects) Stored In PSD File
Dec 30, 2012PSB files are stored (in the Windows OS) in the User's Temp folder. My Temp folder has a dozen or so PSB files with various dates. Is there a reason they don't go away when a PSD file is saved? Vestiges of PS crashes? Same questions for Smart Object PSB files.

Dec 2, 2013How to best smooth a surface created from a DEM file? Contours produced from the surface, particularly in the flatter areas seem to be following the triangles, so you can see the rectangular nature of the grid.
I've attached a screenshot with the contours shown. Up to this point when creating the surface, all I did was add a data clip boundary, then add the DEM file (manually within the surface definition, not using the "create surface from DEM" feature). I had tried some of the options under surface edits & smoothing, natural neighbor interpolation, but the results were still all wonky.

May 29, 2012I´m having problem with creating stl file from surface. I need to import stl in another program for rockfalls.
I have create surface from contours, then extract faces, extrude them, union and I got solid..
I have export solid like stl file... But in another program my surface is not smooth, like somethning went wrong while exporting stl, because in autocad civil 3D 2012 everything looks good.
I have found out how I can increase facetres to 10, but It has not affect to my stl file. If there is some another parameter for better resolution of stl files?
AutoCAD Inventor :: Mapping Image To Flat Surface?
Dec 4, 2013I would like to map an image to the face of Inventor part document. Which possibilities Inventor API offers here? I checked out the ColorMapping example but the tessellation of the flat surface is not sufficient to get high resolution image mapped on it. My intention is to attach images to several parts faces within the assembly environment and this as fast as possible since the scene needs to update very quickly.
PS: I use C#.NET.
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Draped Image Doesn't Fit Surface
Dec 18, 2013I've brought a PNG image into a Civil 3D surface model and attempted to drape it on the surface. The image is scaled to the topography when it's first brought in, but when it's draped on the surface it gets placed very small in the bottom left corner . I've attached the same image to another surface file (without the regrading in this one) and it works fine. why doesn't the image drape over the whole surface?

AutoCad 3D :: Warped Image When Rendering On A Curved Surface?
Jun 1, 2012I do a ton of rendering for my work. We have many curved surfaces within our product line. My problem is that, A lot of times my materials (jpeg's) warp and blur when added to a curve. My guess is it has something to do with the UCS orientation because if i rotate the curve to be parralell with the current UCS, the material shows up how it should, Until i change the UCS back to world.

Till now I have been using Solid Works and with a little trick it is possible to export surfaces as a STL file. In Inventor I didn't manage to do this. So, is it possible?

Nov 13, 2010I am trying to import a surface and Image from Google Earth. Basically my steps are as follows:
start GE and C3D find area that I need on GE and zoom in under C3D, insert GE Image and Surface (then it goes straight into select point, and rotation)
Like most discussions i've read.., the import slows down at 49%, and then it chugs for hours if I let it. So i have to cut the cord and re-start both programs.
I saw in a discussion that there are settings that we can change the rows and columns to something like 70x70.
however.... I cannot find where to update this. I typed importgesurface, and clicked on the ribbon as well..., then tried to right click, but it does not take me to the settings. I also figured that I might have to run C3d as admin, but no luck either.
find these settings so I can change them to import a surface and image that is about 15acres?

Jul 20, 2010I'm running into problems with Civil 3D 2010 trying to render a TIN suface with a draped JPEG.
I've inserted a JPEG aerial photo (supplied by municipal GIS services) and applied it as a drape to the TIN surface terrain model. When I go to the 3D Modeling workspace and try to render the scene, the following error message is displayed:
"This scene cannot be rendered. The scene must contain at least one 3D wireframe or solid model object to render."
The DWG co-ordinate system is UTM83-17. Sometimes these issues can be caused by objects being too far from the origin, and I've tried moving everything to 0,0,0 all to no avail. The surface style confirms triangles as being displayed in Model view, so I really don't know what the problem is here.
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Fatal Error When Defining Surface With ADF File
Aug 21, 2013I have downloaded ArcGrid (ADF) files from the USGS and am trying to define a TIN surface in Civil 3D with those files. I have done this in the past without difficulty but now I get a fatal error and the system crashes in the middle of the process. The ADF files are large, approximately 465 meg, and cover an entire USGS quad area. Is there any tricks or sollutions that would allow me to use this data source to create surfaces without my system crashing?
The system I am using is a Dell Intel Xeon CPU, W365@3.20GHz with 24 GB RAM, 64 Bit OS.

Mar 18, 2013I think this should be an easy thing to do, but I am having problems figuring it out. I need to repath the location of a point file being used in a surface. My surface will not rebuild because it can't find the point file originally used. Drawing was used on a different computer system, so the point file directory is now pointed to the wrong path.

Jul 10, 2013my colleague that is on holidays right now sent some civil 3d drawings that contain data references to another office and they are having broken reference issues with the surfaces. I opened the drawing in our office and the surfaces are there and showing the data ref symbols in prospector but when i look through the data shortcuts folder below in prospector the surfaces are not there.
how do i locate the .xml files or if they have been deleted how do these surfaces appear in my drawing.

Apr 12, 2012I have a bunch (hundreds, so manual input not an option) of X,Y points without elevation data that I would like to import into a DWG and assign an elevation that is based on an existing surface object. Is there a way to do this for a point file? The command for inserting individual points would be the "Create points - Surface > Random" but I don't see a way to do this in a batch type method where i have my PNE formatted input file to just move the points to sit on the existing surface.

Dec 2, 2011I often have to do storm pond surfaces that (for the purposes of planning) are flat on the bottom. These surfaces are created from a combination of survey data and grading groups and the tin of these surfaces is perfectably acceptable. However, when contours are shown, the flat bottom is shown with contours jig-jagging all over the place.
The attached image shows a comparison of the same pond. The top was created with survey data and grading groups; the bottom was created using contour data only. The generated surface on the top shows the bottom contour going in different directions and has parts where the an expected contour is missing.
How to correct/manipulate the surface to show a proper flat surface?
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Reduced Maximum Length For Surface Triangles Causes Surface Holes
Oct 22, 2012Has instances where you set your tolerance for the maximum triangle lenth to say 50m to reduce the amount of triangles along the edge that run at long distances. When I do this I end up with multiple surface holes and I'm not sure why as there are points in the area.
I thought well maybe it's because i should've reduced my max triangles first then added breaklines. Would this matter? I also thought I could add a line to the surface to fix the holes vs. deleting surface lines along the entire edge of a surface for many many miles.
