AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Copy TIN Surface
Aug 31, 2012I've been wondering if there´s an easy way to copy a TIN surface or at least an easier way than what I'm currently doing. What I do is:
- Exctract objects > points/contours depending on the surface and border
- Create a new TIN surface
- Definition of the new surface > add point group or add contours
- Convert the 3D poly of the border to a 2D poly
- Definition > add border
I'm looking for an easier way that would save me the trouble of isolating the points or contous because my drawing has too much data and its very time consuming. Isn't there a command that lets me copy a TIN surface which creates another with the same objects as definitions?

Mar 25, 2013I have a surface. I have a lot of operations done (points adding, breakilines, borders, etc) I want to move and or rotate and change datum.
I have seen old post.
Ok, I have to select the definition data, to transform it and finally rebuild my surface.
I select them and simply move it.
mmm. Something is wrong. Maybe a bug... I have 12 duplicate points (false) , I have missing points, I have a crossed two breaklines.
The data used is very simple, 15 breaklines, 50 points (so there is no reason to think on big data problems...) I have nothing at edit branch.

Apr 19, 2013Just as the topic says. I have about 40 manholes referenced to a surface that has no changed and I need to update them. I can go thru one by one and pick "structure properties" and change the surface. I did change the surface under the network options, but they all still reference the old surface.

Mar 20, 2013You can copy both the surface and the original (in this case contour polylines) data or only the surface. In both cases paste operation results into a copy of both data and surface.
Ok, But when paste and rebuild, the distance from original base point and destination point is applied in turn to the surface itself. Maybe it is a BUG ?

May 22, 2012When I copy or move an object in a file converted from Microstation to Autocad 2012 the system freezes or slows down to a crawl. If I redraw the drawing in Autocad it works fine. I have a lot of drawings converted from Microstation and I don't need to be redrawing them all.

Jun 13, 2009I have a ribbon that I'm trying to copy onto my page and it is a png file. I've copied papers that are jpgs just fine. Once I copy the png ribbon it locks and I cannot move it around. How do I either unlock it or is there a way to see where I am placing it on my project?

Apr 21, 2013I have a 3D file (not of my creation) that gives me some problems when I try to copy it (it is a 3D building).
The problem is that, when i click on "copy" command, I can select a point but then AutoCAD crashes and it takes about 30 seconds to return working a normal way and permit me to paste it. (it happens with "move" command too)
Otherwise, if I use "copy with base point" I have no problems: after a second I can paste it where I want.
How can it be possible? Cause if sometimes I mistake and digit "copy", I always have to wait the long Autocad response.
This problem happens with both autocad 2012 and 2013 and it doesn't happen with other 3D files I have. The drawing is made mainly of meshes.
I have a Dell notebook and a NVIDIA Quadro 2000M video card, so you can understand I don't like this problems: I spent a lot of money for something I hoped could work well with AutoCAD.
About that, aren't there drivers for the graphic card? Cause when I click on "check for updates", autocad says me that there are newer version of the driver, but then it says me that it is impossible to update it (I have a connession and a student version).
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Surface Created From DEM File
Dec 2, 2013How to best smooth a surface created from a DEM file? Contours produced from the surface, particularly in the flatter areas seem to be following the triangles, so you can see the rectangular nature of the grid.
I've attached a screenshot with the contours shown. Up to this point when creating the surface, all I did was add a data clip boundary, then add the DEM file (manually within the surface definition, not using the "create surface from DEM" feature). I had tried some of the options under surface edits & smoothing, natural neighbor interpolation, but the results were still all wonky.

May 29, 2012I´m having problem with creating stl file from surface. I need to import stl in another program for rockfalls.
I have create surface from contours, then extract faces, extrude them, union and I got solid..
I have export solid like stl file... But in another program my surface is not smooth, like somethning went wrong while exporting stl, because in autocad civil 3D 2012 everything looks good.
I have found out how I can increase facetres to 10, but It has not affect to my stl file. If there is some another parameter for better resolution of stl files?

Instead of having to mouse click the "copy" button in the move object window, one could just hold down option with Return or Enter and the Copy command would happen rather than a simple move. Immensely useful for prepress work!

Aug 21, 2013I have downloaded ArcGrid (ADF) files from the USGS and am trying to define a TIN surface in Civil 3D with those files. I have done this in the past without difficulty but now I get a fatal error and the system crashes in the middle of the process. The ADF files are large, approximately 465 meg, and cover an entire USGS quad area. Is there any tricks or sollutions that would allow me to use this data source to create surfaces without my system crashing?
The system I am using is a Dell Intel Xeon CPU, W365@3.20GHz with 24 GB RAM, 64 Bit OS.

Mar 18, 2013I think this should be an easy thing to do, but I am having problems figuring it out. I need to repath the location of a point file being used in a surface. My surface will not rebuild because it can't find the point file originally used. Drawing was used on a different computer system, so the point file directory is now pointed to the wrong path.

Jul 10, 2013my colleague that is on holidays right now sent some civil 3d drawings that contain data references to another office and they are having broken reference issues with the surfaces. I opened the drawing in our office and the surfaces are there and showing the data ref symbols in prospector but when i look through the data shortcuts folder below in prospector the surfaces are not there.
how do i locate the .xml files or if they have been deleted how do these surfaces appear in my drawing.

Apr 11, 2013I am trying to edit the elevation of a JPEG image I have brought into my C3D 2010 file as an xref - I essentially want to 'drape' the image over the existing ground surface I have created to use for presentation purposes i.e. to show how our road layout is predominantly located along the ridge lines of the site.
Typically for other file types I would perform the following steps (using the classic toolbar): Grading > Edit Feature Line Elevations > Elevations from Surface > Select the existing ground surface > select object.
I don't seem to have the ability to select my jpeg xref using this approach... how else can I perform this task?

Apr 12, 2012I have a bunch (hundreds, so manual input not an option) of X,Y points without elevation data that I would like to import into a DWG and assign an elevation that is based on an existing surface object. Is there a way to do this for a point file? The command for inserting individual points would be the "Create points - Surface > Random" but I don't see a way to do this in a batch type method where i have my PNE formatted input file to just move the points to sit on the existing surface.

Dec 2, 2011I often have to do storm pond surfaces that (for the purposes of planning) are flat on the bottom. These surfaces are created from a combination of survey data and grading groups and the tin of these surfaces is perfectably acceptable. However, when contours are shown, the flat bottom is shown with contours jig-jagging all over the place.
The attached image shows a comparison of the same pond. The top was created with survey data and grading groups; the bottom was created using contour data only. The generated surface on the top shows the bottom contour going in different directions and has parts where the an expected contour is missing.
How to correct/manipulate the surface to show a proper flat surface?
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Reduced Maximum Length For Surface Triangles Causes Surface Holes
Oct 22, 2012Has instances where you set your tolerance for the maximum triangle lenth to say 50m to reduce the amount of triangles along the edge that run at long distances. When I do this I end up with multiple surface holes and I'm not sure why as there are points in the area.
I thought well maybe it's because i should've reduced my max triangles first then added breaklines. Would this matter? I also thought I could add a line to the surface to fix the holes vs. deleting surface lines along the entire edge of a surface for many many miles.

Nov 14, 2012I am trying to add points into a surface. I have done this before without any problems, but now I am having issues.
When I ID points which makes up the surface it gives me the correct Z level e.g. 24.5m, however when I hover over the surface it shows me the surface name and a different z level e.g. 0.65m. What is the reason for this difference in z levels? I think this may be causing the issue I am having when I add new points.
I select the surface and use the 'edit surface command' in the ribbon, choosing add point.
When I add a point at the level I require(23.89m), it puts it in a lot higher than the surrounding area, so I tried to put the point in to the lower z levels (0.4m) it puts it in a lot lower!

Do i need to create alignment offsets?. Alignment 1 profile view is also attached. Then Alignment2.
What about starting with alignment1 profile view? Since I have created a polyline as the design profile ?
how do I shrink labels? Where is it in the settings ; the Align folder had been check.

Oct 2, 2012I am issues with DEM files that I am downloading from the USGS website.I download 24k, elevation for the area I need. I then choose staged 1 second, add a surface to a blank drawing, then upload the DEM files to the surface.
The surface imports correcty, but when I try to import points taken by a surveyor on the same drawing, they plot incorrectly.The DEM surface and the points from the surveyor do not correspond. Also, the DEM surface is in meters, not feet. I have tried changing drawing settings, datum types, coordinate types, etc.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Import Surface Into Revit To Merge Surface And Buildings Together?
Jul 29, 2013I have a project involving 3 programs. I am creating a planned development in 3d to be 3d printed when finished. The project is a 5 acre tract containing 8 buildings. I have built the surface in C3D and each building in Revit. The buildings are not in the same Revit file. For my solid work, I will bring the files over into 3ds Max Design to section into smaller quadrants to build in the 3d printer.
The questions:
Would it be better to import the surface into Revit to merge surface and buildings together?
Would it be better to import the buildings into C3D to merge entities?
Would it be better to bring those entities into 3ds Max and then merge them into one? Will 3ds Max Design allow me to insert entities accurately in the environment?

Sep 15, 2013I need to create a sub-set surface from my main surface. not sure what the vernacular is for a "subset surface" in c3d but i do have a feature line that bouinds the desired area, but that is as far as i can solve.
i did try creating a new surface - pasted the main surface in the edit definition, then deleted triangles until the boundary alighned wiht my featureline. This seemed to work, but when i view the properties of the smaller subset suface, it shows a mimum and maximum elevation that is incorrect.

Mar 1, 2013Im currently using an addon for Civil 3D called Novapoint. It allows me to create 3D models of surfaces made out of 3d faces and easily models cut and fill 3d-models for me.
The only thing i need to create a cut and fill model is one or several ground surfaces (existing ground, earth layers, rock etc. whatever i need) and a closed polyline/3Dpolyline that represents the level I want my cut and/or fill model.
I enter the spcifications I want such as; earth cut angle, rock cut angle, fill angle, select which surfaces i want to include in the model calculation and select the polyline.Novapoint then calculates the cut/fill model from the surfaces to the polyline and models the different cut/fill angles and gives me the results in a 3d-face model and a specification of the volyme of rock cut, earth cut an fill.
1. Novapoint is quite unstable and crashes alot
2. You cant create profiles out of 3d faces
3. Novapoint does not automaticly combine the start surfaces with the modeled cut/fill surface
4. A large surface made out of 3d-faces demands alot of computer power
So I want to how I do the same that Novapoint does for me in Civil 3D? (I have access to Civil 3D 2007-2013 depending on which one you're using)I know I can take the 3Dfaces i created in Novapoint and make a surface in Civil 3D with them but I want to exclude Novapoint completely.

Mar 26, 2012all of a sudden whenever I run audit on my corridor file the surface definition becomes a snapshot. To add to the drama, the corridor surface will not paste into an empty surface. Why?
