AutoCad 3D :: Dimensioning 3D Model As Sketch In Paperspace
Jul 25, 2013
I’m looking to model abasic part in 3D then throw some dimensions on it in paper space for quotationpurposes. The problem I have is even when I try aligned dimensions theextension lines from the dimension are not in the same line if vision as themodel (and this just looks awful). The parts are so basic they do not warrant a proper 3 view orthographicdrawing as a simple 3D sketch will suffice…

Whilst dimensioning in paperspace I dont seem to be able to get the dimesions to sit above the drawing in model space. for example if I place a leader across the drawing to a specific point the leader sits under the drawing and is lost/hidden. how I set the dimensions to sit above the drawing.

I just got back from maternity leave and I left work at Autocad 2011 and came back on Autocad 2013. I work thru my viewports in my model space, and I've noticed that when I pan and zoom in or out or move to quickly from one point to another (didn't notice which) my model space swaps to paper even if I'm in a command. Is this something I can deactivate?

I am trying to use sketch points in drawing for dimensioning. Below is portion of my code. The code fails when AddLinear is called. Is it even possible to use drawing sketch points for dimensioning?
invSheet = invDrawingDoc.ActiveSheet
Dim oTransGeom As Inventor.TransientGeometry= invApp.TransientGeometry
Dim pt1 AsPoint= oTransGeom.CreatePoint(0, 0, flangeOD / 2)

I am creating a part that consists of a series of intermediate Lofts. The various Loft termination profiles are sketched on a series of stacked planes, most of which are parallel to one another. I have a Work Axis (oriented at an angle off of true vertical) that penetrates all of these sketch planes, essentially forming a "central axis" for my part. Most, but not all, of my sketch planes are normal (perpendicular) to that axis.
I want to use my "central axis" as a reference point in each of my sketches, i.e., the point where the axis intersects the sketch plane. I am having a minor difficulty.
When I project my central axis into a sketch whose plane is normal (perpendicular) to the axis, Inventor displays a reference point where the axis penetrates the plane and I can dimension my sketch geometry relative to that point. Conversely, no such point is displayed when I project the axis into a sketch plane that is NOT normal to the axis.
Is this correct behavior? To have a dimension able point on my "non-normal" sketch planes, must I create explicit Work Points to mark the intersection between my Axis and such planes, and then project those points into the related sketches?

I need to draw in a sketch on a drawing. The sketch is created OK, but I get the error "The parameter is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070057 (E_INVALIDARG))" at Call oSketch.SketchLines.AddByTwoPoints.
Dim oSketch As DrawingSketch
oSketch=ThisDrawing.ActiveSheet.Sheet.sketches.add
Dim oTranGeo As TransientGeometry
oTranGeo = ThisApplication.TransientGeometry
' Draw two point line in the sketch.
Call oSketch.SketchLines.AddByTwoPoints(oTranGeo.CreatePoint2d(10 * 2.54, 10 * 2.54), oTranGeo.CreatePoint2d(30 * 2.54, 45 * 2.54))

We draw with our tick on the dimensions filled in. I have one file that shows them not filled in, in model space but filled in, in paper space. They seem to be printing correctly.
What did i turn off/on and how do I fix this?

I am having difficulties with the scale of my drawing. In my model space, the units are set to decimal - millimeters. And then, when I set up a viewport in paper space even 1/128"=1'-0" is too small. I'm using a size 24"x36" paper. Everything is set to 1:1 and I drew 1:1 in model space. Previously, another person drew this drawing and it fit on an 8x11 sheet of paper at 1:10, but mine doesn't fit on 24x36.What did I do wrong?

I am currently using the following to switch to modelspace:
Editor ed = Application.DocumentManager.MdiActiveDocument.Editor;ed.SwitchToModelSpace();
However if you already are in modelspace it throws the error: eInvalidInput
How do I find out which space I am in so I can avoid running this when already in modelspace?

Opened AutoCAD LT 2012 on a home laptop which I have used multiple times. The mouse is unresponsive in the drawing space, regardless of paper or model space. I am missing my crosshairs and can't pan or zoom. I can click on menu's, ribbon, command prompt or otherwise as long as it is outside the normal workings space. I can not close a drawing unless I close the entire program. Finally, I have to click in the command prompt space in order to type a command. I tried rebooting and it appears my last resort may to repair or reinstall the software.

I dont use paper space at all. i mostly work in model. but i just want to explore the paper space side.
I have my lpaperspace dimscale set at 1
In the model space my picture is drawn to scale, so its like 12 feet tall.
when i put the viewport in and get the picture positioned in the viewport, when i dimension the model in the viewport my dims are set according to the paperspace dimscale.
is there a way i set the dimscale in the viewport at a different dimsale then the dimscale set in the paperspace without having to set the dimscale in the model space?

Am using Autocad 2012 with SP2 downloaded, note the problem does not occur in Autocad 2013... So basically if you open the dwg you will see it opens in paperspace, the viewport is locked to a specific scale etc. Now go into model space where the dwg is, you should be able to zoom around, pan etc fine, problem is when you now go back into the layout or paperspace. You will notice that upon re-entering paperspace that the vport is highlighted, ie there is a thicker outline of the vport boundary, however am still in paperspace according to the tabs. When you now try zooming in or out using the mouse scroll you will notice an additional copy of the viewport is imprinted on the screen. Thats the problem. Doing a few undos will set you back right again.
So far we are inclined to think that its either something to do with the UCS or the units that the program is getting confused with but havent been able to find a solution. Also bear in mind that it seems to work fine in 2013. Its probably something really simple that we've missed but thought would try anyway Will attach the dwg file.

Suddenly, this week, Paperspace no longer has a 0,0.
For decades I've inserted my Titleblocks in Paperspace at 0,0.
This week, it inserts it relative to 0,0 in Modelspace in one of the Viewports.
Which means the Titleblock is "Waaay Offf" to quote Rodney Dangerfield.
If I draw a line in Paperspace and start it at 0,0, again, it's the Modelspace 0,0 in a Viewport.
Was this an improvement that I didn't know of?Or did I accidentally change some setting?

We have just loaded AutoCAD 2013 from previously using Version 2012, and I am experiencing a very distubing phenomenon. While manipulating the commands in any vieport window in Model Space, the program automatically 'jumps' into Paper Space causing an interruption in work-flow, and losing any command which was in progress during the time. For example, if a number of objects were copied with the intention of placing them elsewhere within the same or another paper space window in 'model space' , the program would jump to paper space and the items would be lost, with the necessity of selecting them all over again. This can happen several times in a row.

I'm looking for a way to hide a layer in model space, but show it on ONLY my paperspace tab. Problem is, most of my work is in model space (different aspect of this drawing), and although I could pull the objects through to the paperspace tab, it just wouldn't be the way I feel it should be (3d objects should stay in model space imo). However, for the most part I don't need to see it in model space (except for checking 3d elevations of line segments), the finish product is a printed 2d top view.

My group and I are getting an infrequent but annoying problem with Model Documentation (MD) generated views in paperspace layout tabs. We all on autocad 2013, with sp1.1 installed on x64 machines.
We are seeing objects/ blocks showing in the MD views (viewbase created) in the layout that are no longer in model space. One common factor in this is that these objects seem to always be externally referenced (xref) files that have been either unloaded or completely detached (both cases purges preformed afterwards to wipe any remaining blocks made no difference). In this latest case the ghost objects show up twice (we needed 2 of the same xref) at what appears to be the correct old coordinates.
We have no work around for this and when this occurs we either have to revert to an older version from vault or create a new dwg, port all information over and recreate all views. The interesting thing about this problem is that if we revert to an older version from vault, the ghosts do not reappear/ reoccur at the same commands they appeared at previously.

I have several objects on various layers in model space and they are exposed through a viewport in a paperspace layout. I also have a corporate CTB plot style.
Here is my problem: If i plot the objects from model space, they all plot with the correct lineweights as defined in our corporate CTB, but when i plot them from the paperspace layout, some but not all objects plot with a heavier lineweight than what is defined in the CTB.
I thought the CTB was supposed to override any settings applied to individual objects, but more importantly, why the different results, on the same objects, depending upon the space from which they're plotted?

Is there a way to hide project geometry from model sketch? I am modeling a sheetmetal part where I need to sketch centermaks, part number etc. for laser cutting. I want to use xy planes for symmetry reasons when sketching, but I don't want them to appear in dxf. This is a problem if I create a dxf directly from the model.
Usually I create dxf files from drawing by adding new sheet where I create flat pattern view from the spesific part (excluding machinigs etc, only thermal cut boundaries visible). In the drawing I am allso able to show model sketches and hide unwanted project geometry. Is it possible to include these sketches to dxf?

I'm a new 2009 Inventor user (use mostly Solidworks for other jobs) and how to make the model update after I modify a feature sketch (e.g. I only add one more circle/hole to a sketch used for a somple extrusion, but the extra hole doesn't appear on the model). Tried all update-related commands but no luck so far. If I delete the feature and recreate it again everything works fine, but I stuff up all other features and mates that use the reference geometry...

How can I display a sketch or projected geometry that is not a closed loop in a ipt drawing? Historically I have to use a closed loop and emboss in order to display the geometry in a drawing.
Then move that forward to a DXF file for its intended use. I think there should be a way to just have lines placed on the model and display it on a drawing without it having to be a feature.

I can "Get Model Sketch" to make it appear visible in a drawing view. But I can find no way to use these "edges" or "lines" or "entities" or whatever they are, later in a drawing view sketch. No way to project them from Model Sketch to Drawing View sketch. I can attach leaders and dimensions to these Model Sketch entitites but I can find no way to use them in a sketch owned by the drawing view. Am I missing something?

I have made a part - a motor that has four holes.
Now I'm trying to make another part, which will be aluminium plate that needs to have holes in exactly same points as the motor. My assembly containts both that parts.
What I'm trying to do is to reference in sketch a point that comes from different part (motor).
I could do it by hand, make it look that the holes are on top of each other but then there will be an error which doesn't seem professional.
In some tutorial on yt I have only found that using points one can reference the holes more easily, but it didn't show how.

Tried to do something that all other 3D softwares seem to have no problem with, even inventor at least when we were using the old versions.
Editting sketch - close sketch. No model update.
This is an existing 3D model created with inv2011. inv2013 does not like much of what we created in the old releases of inv.
Sketch gives me 1 dimension. Part and drawing give the old dimension value.
This is yet another major sign of unstable software. Over 24 software issues discovered from changing inv2011 to inv2013.

Is there anyway to make the sketch suppressed so it doesn't trigger a sketch doctor error? Inventor 2013
