AutoCad 2D :: What Are 3 Types Of Paths Used For Storing XRef
May 6, 2012
What are 3 types of paths that can be used for storing an xref? when inserting an xref, how does the Overlay option differ from the Attach option? can xref drawings be scaled, rotated, or positioned at any desired location?

We recently updated our servers and with that the path to all of our drawings. For example what was once located at W:FilesAutoCAD is now located at W:CorporateAutoCADDrawings. The problem is every time we open an old drawing for the first time we must redirect all of the xrefs to the new location. My question is, is there any way to do this automatically for all drawings when they are opened? Is there a way to tell the software to replace "FilesAutoCAD " with "CorporateAutoCADDrawings"? I'm sure others have encountered this dilemma.

For new drawings, is there a way to program Autocad to always load Xrefs relative? We pretty much use xrefs everywhere, and it seems like it would save a lot of time if I didn't have to open the External References and change each xref to relative.
Also, if you have an existing drawing and need to change the xref from absolute to relative path, is there a way to have it automatically do that? I'm assuming there isn't, but thought I'd ask.

I am trying to import thousands of pictures into Lightroom as I have a mess of pictures do to a long story...But basically I have probably 30,000 pictures in a bunch of folders that I want to import.
One issue I have found is that I don't want to import TIFF, BMP, GIF, or things like PNG. I really only want jpg files or jpeg files unless I stumble across others in another format I haven't found yet.
Can I set something during the import? I have searched the forums and internet, but haven't found anything that mentions this.
How to clean up a mess like this where I have 30,000 pictures but probably only need 10,000 as there are duplicates upon duplicates due to having to move the pictures around in a hurry as I had a mess in my basement during a storm a couple years ago.

When storing data in ResultBuffer, I found, that there are DxfCodes, that seem to have the same meaning.
DxfCode.ExtendedDataAsciiString Vs. DxfCode.Text
DxfCode.ExtendedDataInteger16 Vs. DxfCode.Int16

While in my AutoCad drawing, I need to be able to select cells in an Excel database and use them as variables to create a drawing. I've looked on the Internet and have found some bits and pieces of code for particular uses, but what I'm looking for is the methodology, or some training/examples on working with Excel and AutoCad using VB.net.

I need to create and maintain a library of hole features of varying shapes and sizes (there will only be around 10 variations). The goal is to be able to programmatically retrieve a feature and then place it in the current part. Ideally I would like to be able to assign each an ID to each feature that I can use to programmatically retrieve it.
My first thought on how to achieve this is to have one master part file that contains all of the features. When I need one I can open that file and somehow copy the appropriate feature and then place it in the target file.
Or maybe it would be better to save each feature in its own part file? I'm not so much looking for code as much as general guidance on whether either of these approaches sound reasonable. Maybe there is a better way to programmatically store and retrieve features from a library?

Where the proper location to store custom images for new custom materials? We do not use vault and I currently store everything locally. I found where Inventor stores all of the material library images in C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAutodesk SharedMaterialsTextures. In that "Textures" folder there are Inventor material images stored in folders named "1","2 "and "3". Should I paste my custom image in all three folders, or a completely different location? I need Inventor to find this material and image for every new project so I save it to my library but I do not know where to store the image.

Well this is not strictly an InDesign issue, but I'm counting on the aggregated knowledge and experience of all you typesetters here. So, what would be the best way of storing manuscripts? Text files, perhaps? What about formatting; markup language? How publishers archive them?

I know that in ACAD you can use the xref manager to see where the actual file for the xref resides on your computer/server/etc. What I'm curious about is whether or not the inverse action is possible. Can you somehow access the file (not the output sheet where it's being xref-ed) and see what other files are using it as an xref?
I've come in on a project that is nearing completion and have been assigned the task of "cleaning up the project folder." Unfortunately, there are a ton of files in the different folders that are no longer in use on the final output sheets and I need to keep the ones still in use and archive the ones that are no longer needed. What I've been doing is going through those sheets and reviewing the xref manager for each sheet to see which files are actually put onto those sheets and making a physical checklist from which to organize my findings. Once the checklist is made, I then archive all the files that are no longer being used.

Is it possible to run a lisp which can extract all the xref names, make a layer with that name and then change the xref on the layer? I have got a similar routine from earlier posts but it doesn't work if any xrefs inserted in paper space (works fine on model space). could change this routine allowing to change the layer of xref in paper space too.
(defun dxf (i a) (cdr (assoc i a)))
(defun c:lxr ( )
(setq ss (ssget "x" '((0 . "INSERT"))))

I am using (trying to anyway) a :VLR-xrefSubcommandReloadItem reactor. My only question is how to get the xref/block name from the 'reactor callback data' Object ID.
I am ultimately trying to pass it to (vla-get-xrefdatabase ....), but I cannot figure out how to turn the second parameter from the reactor callback data into something I can use - for example the second parameter returned may be "65" or some other number.

when you bind an xref the link disappears from the xref manager.
is it possible to bind an xref, but preserve that link in the xref manager? i realize that will lead to two copies of the same object in the drawing (one xref, plus the new block). everyone's okay with that happening.

I just bought a new laptop in July. Got Elements soon after. I have been taking digital photos since 2006. I have over 7,500 photos. I have used all of my online storage.
1. How do I get Photoshop to look at my hard drive for photos?
a. How do I use the online storage as a backup of, say, photo albums?
2. How do I get Elements to stop loading ALL 7500 photos every time I open it?
I'm using DSL, so you can imagine how incredibly SLOW EVERYTHING is in Elements.
I'm still trying to figure out how to organize everything. I stopped using it for a few months becuase I got so frustrated. But now I've scanned in more photos (75) and I have to finish my mom's scrapbook. I've read parts of Elements for Dummies, but I still don't get it.

I want to join two paths to create a shape that I can fill but at the same time retain one of the original paths (the red one in the image below). I can copy the path I want to retain but surely there is a more elegant solution. See below for for an illustration:

I don't know if this is just a Windows 8 compatibility issue, but when I save an edited photo it is stored in whatever orientation I opened it. Also the thumbnails only show the original imported image, not the edited image.
For instance if I took a picture in a sideways orientation on my smart phone then opened it in PPX5 I can rotate, edit and save and it will show the original image in a sideways orientation. If I post the image on Facebook it will show up sideways. If I put it on a forum it may look okay but people with iPads and iPhones see it sideways.

Is it possible to export only certain types of objects using mapexport? I know you can use EntTypes of "All" or Types" in the MapExport.ini file, but can you specify lines and points? I have experimented to no avail. I have searched for explanations for each entry in the MapExport.ini file in the documentation ...also to no avail.

what are the differences among the surface types we can create?
I see we can use convert to surface command and have a surface made from the object which receives NURBS property. And I see we can command a planar surface, realizing it can't have a NURBS Surface for further changes.
when we thicken the planar surface, the surface goes off then, and it can be no longer selected ! what's going on with this planar surface, what is it for? why does autocad actually got a Planar surface?

At my work we have 2 different departments that uses a different type of simplex font. My department uses the standard simplex font and the other uses a customized simplex font. I need to make prints from the other department and its a burden to them for me to ask them to print out a drawing just because our fonts are different. Is there a way I can print their drawings with their font without it loading the standard font that's on my computer?

How to filter multiple object types (here, the swamp, Google, and the docs) and have come up empty handed. I have code that filters out everything except for blocks (INSERT) with a few additional parameters to exclude blocks of a certain name, but I also need to include MULTILEADERS in the selection filter.
Here is the code I have for the INSERT filter:
acTypValAr = New TypedValue() {New TypedValue(DxfCode.Start, "INSERT"), New TypedValue(-4, "<NOT"), _ New TypedValue(2, "BLOCKA,BLOCKB,BLOCKC,BLOCKD"), _ New TypedValue(-4, "NOT>")}
How to add MULTILEADERS to this selection filter as well?
