AutoCAD Inventor :: Why Does Suppressing Machining Feature In One Representation Change All Representations
Apr 19, 2013
Inventor 2013..I am trying to show a part in a drawing of three different configurations of a casting:
1) Rough as received from the foundry
2) Partially machined or rough machined
3) Final machined
What is the most basic bullet-proof way to show this? Three different models? What is the procedure to change the representation to show changes in the model? Why does suppressing a machining feature in one representation change all representations? The rough part is brought into an assembly and the machining or removal of material happens in the assembly.

I'm trying to use the Level of Detail function to add a hole feature in a sub assembly that will be used in 2 places inside the main assembly, but the sub assembly is present in many other location and does not need this hole. My thought is to have the master level of detail depict the hole feature and have another level of detail with this hole suppressed.I can't get the two levels of detail to save the desired outcome. When I switch LODs, the hole feature will not suppress or unsuppress as desired. Is this possible or am I doing something wrong.

I have an assembly with a client feature that contains client graphics. I have exposed the visibility (ClientFeature.Definition.ClientGraphicsCollection[1].Visible) to the user via a context menu option. Changing the visibility currently affects all view representations. Is there a way to associate the visibility with each design view representation?

I'm configuring a band with different supports. Each support is configured with a range; 600-900, 900-1200, 1200-1500 etc. those ranges can be adjust by 50mm and those steps are specified by the pos reps (see attached image).
All the different supports are put in the top assembly and in this assembly I want to switch between the positional representations. I tried to use:
ThisApplication.ActiveDocument.ComponentDefinition.RepresentationsManager.PositionalRepresentations("MyPosRep").Activate
But it won't work. I guess I have to replace "ComponentDefinition" in one way or another to the component name, but I don't know how.

So after creating a bunch of assemblies with associated presentation and drawing files I was told that each assembly needs multiple representations for different part colors. I would like to be able to change the representation view of my assembly (i.e. from 'Master' to 'Black') in the presentation file I've already made and have the colors update here and in the associated drawing files.
PS - I do know how to change the representation in a new view. So...hindsight 20/20.

I have a main assembly with two major subassemblies with one of them I want the representations to be set as Defualt instead of master but when I do this and change the size of my parts Inventor crashes, if I leave it set to master it works fine but parts with visibility turned off still show in the iam and dwg files. If I try to change the representation after changing dimensions Inventor also crashes. I can individually open the sub assemblies and everything works fine.

I have a weldment file containg a 12" i beam with a small plate welded to the top of the beam. I have to machine that plate down to its finished thickness and punch a hole thru others. I use the machining button and remove my material with no issues. The problem comes when I launch the part the machining is not reflected at the part level. Do I need do have 2 versions (2 files) of the part machined/unmachined? I am sure this is a common practice within Inventor. See attached .jpg for clarity.

I started my project, the design is basically a bulkhead chassis design with multiple access panels on all 3 sides. I wanted all of the hole patterns on this assembly to be based on one sketch. So I created a base part inside the assembly, this part compiled of sketches and the sketches compiled of construct lines and points (for panel and chassis fastener hole patterns). This was going great, after learning a couple tricks.
Manufactuing had determined that I need to machine the holes on the chassis after welding. Which means I need to move the adaptive features, from the part files, to the assembly file.
So here is my problem, assembly sketchs are not adaptable? Either projecting to (from that base part file), or projecting from (from the assembly sketch to the part file). I tried both. How I should model this? How do I make weldment machining adaptive?

What would be best work flow for showing a part and having drawing for the different stages of machining, I would like to have a print with different sheets at say a lathe stage, than a broached part stage, then a milled stage. Should I do a part for each stage, just save to a different name or Start with a part from the first op, than derive it to another part, and make that part complete on second op, than derive it and make a third part, and so on.
Would like to do this, because we make special shaped part from round stock, so need print's to tell floor people rough blank form. Than mills machine it into final form from that lathe blank.
Similar to casted and machined drawing

If certain modelling / sketch features should be avoided under the machining feature group.
I have an assembly file containing three part files, plus a weldment feature and machining features. In the real world this sub-assembly represents two metal components welded together, of which the third (plastic) component is then inserted, and this is followed by the final machining process - adding the staggered slot (see jpeg 1).
My problem is I get an error message as soon as I try to activate editing the weldment feature group (see jpeg 2). Clicking ‘Accept’ I can then edit the current weld, but I can not add any new welds. Inventor will let me choose to place a new fillet or groove weld, and even show a preview (see jpeg 3). But on clicking ‘Ok’ or ‘Apply’ I get another error message from which it won’t let me proceed (see jpeg 4 (in my second post)).
The error messages relate to the constraints placed on the work planes used to achieve the model features (extrusions, revolutions, chamfers, etc) under the machining features group.
A couple of points; the weld(s) have to proceed the machining features so each manufacturing stage can be clearly illustrated on the drawing of the sub-assembly. And yes in this case I could remodel the assembly, but it is time consuming and regularly our customers will want the design tweaked, so having to remodel every time would be unacceptable. Thirdly, I believe the work planes are needed to constrain the sketches (see jpeg 5 (in my second post) - the work plane is constrained to the ‘red highlighted dot’ and tangent to the cylindrical face).

when in simulation, if you suppress a feature is it totally taken out of the simulations workings?
I.e. if I was working on a project like some weighing scales and I had a load of objects on the scales and I then suppressed some of the objects, will the scales rise up a little to counteract the reduced weight?

I am working on an Inventor Studio animation and have noticed a problem. It appears that it is not possible to suppress/enable translational constraints. My assembly has a translational constraint that I suppressed in order to “explode” the assembly. I am animating the assembly process. Once it is put back together, I need to enable the suppressed translational constraint in order for the model to function properly.
I thought about recording two animations and then splicing the two videos together, but I am worried about the transition. I really need it to be a smooth transition in order to work.

Is there any way to create a single line stick type font in inventor. Everything comes in as a box type which is not ideal for selecting geomety once imported into cam software for machining/engraving. The model text will be extruded/embossed, but it it possible to get single line text in a dwg or idw that will import into cam software. It would be nice to be able to import the text from a inventor dwg,idw to a different level in mastercam to save time from having to redraw all the text in the cam software.

I often use multiple versions of components in my assemblies so I can validate the top level assy works in all it's expected configurations. To that end, if I have different versions of component A, I supress all except the version I am working with. I have discovered though, that supressing the component does not supress the contraints that component has to an unsupressed component in the assy.
The purpose of suppressing something is to essentially eliminate it from existance without deleting it from the file so it can be brought back quickly in all its glory. If I have to track down every contraint there is for a supressed component and supress them independently, that is an incredible consumption of time.

I am working on an iLogic assembly configurator that manipulates several skeletal parts, and suppresses both standard and skeletal parts depending on the configuration.
I've been using the Component.IsActive function to suppress all omitted parts, which has prompted me to create a custom Level of Detail. This hasn't caused me much grief until I had completed ~10months of work when it was time for me to make my final assembly drawing and a parts list.I am now running into several deal-breaking issues:
1) Suppressed parts insist on appearing on the Parts List.
2) Saving the assembly drawing reverts my assembly model to the "Master" LOD, which I never, ever, ever want to see again so long as I live.
Is there another workflow or technique that I should be using to turn off unwanted components in an assembly? I understand that LOD's are really intended to manage system resources, but Inventor users seem to be left with no other option to display a skeletal assembly in a certain configuration. What is the point of the Component.IsActive function if it doesn't update your assembly (at least so far as the Parts List is concerned)?
If I am left to deal with the nightmare that is the Inventor LOD, is there any way to set up the Parts List to reference the custom LOD?
Drawing View reps don't seem to be an option, as it looks like there is no way to automatically update the same custom view after the configuration has been made. The iAssembly Include/Exclude feature would handle part inclusion and BOM behavior nicely, but it won't fit into the rest of my iLogic and file management program.

IV11 SP2, Vaulted project.
I have several drawing templates that have prompted entry field text in the border and bring some model properties in the block. Problem is, if any change in the model properties occurs, this dialog box pops up EVERY TIME I return to the drawing, when changes in the model properties have nothing to do with the border. I have just checked and IV10 SP3a does not suffer from this behaviour. For me, this is an unnecessary dialog that pops up without being required to do so, and is time consuming - it takes extra mouse/keyboard clicks to dismiss and up to 10 seconds for it to close after being dismissed.
Is there an option to turn this off? (I've checked the Options >> Prompts tab, but there's nothing there)

company needs a very elaborate parts list on the drawings regarding different custom properties of parts (so I created new parts to easily add these custom columns...without screwing up parts in the content center somehow).
I needed to get things up and running quick so I imported a good handful of bolts and nuts from McMaster Carr.
the threading on the bolts is so detailed that it's really cluttering up the drawing views with extra line geometry (basically black blobs wherever bolt threads or hidden bolt threads are located)...is there any way to lower the detail of objects, say just to show the outline of the bolt and it's "perimeter" thread outline...but not show the individual threading across a bolts face?

I am trying to suppress features or Extrusions if the extrusions are outside of the Raduis of a contruction circle Called the OTL. I have added a model to look at. So lets say I have holes enougth for a 40" dia but I want only hole today for a 20" dia how do i suppress the holes on that radius. Sketch 10 is where the OTL contruction line is and its a radius so its always moving as I go from center out.

I'm trying to employ a technique that I've used with SolidWorks. I'm working on a project with several engineers doing design work on a large assembly. The way I've seen this handled in a SolidWorks shop is to create a master assembly with sketches on the principal planes that define envelopes for sub assemblies, interface dimensions, and so on. Each engineer can have the master assembly in their sub assembly, as a guide. Where I've used this before, it has worked with integrating the sub assemblies later on.
Here's the complication: There are several different "families" of the product that require different dimensions on the master sketches. What I had hoped to do in Inventor was use view representations or level of detail representation to control the visibility of these "families" of master sketches. When an engineer includes the master assembly in his sub assembly he could then easily turn on the "family" he wants to see. But it turns out that neither view representations nor level of detail representations influence the visibility of sketches. (Position representations don't, either.) Sketches are either visible or not visible, regardless of which representation you're in.
Is there some way I can control the visibility of sketches, in groups?

I have set up my assembly file so that it has the master and two other positions. When I switch from position one, to position two, it works fine. But when I go into inventor studio, and try to create an animation by using Pos Reps, it will not do anything.I do sometimes get an error saying that Excel is required. I do have the latest version of Excel installed on my machine.

When I try to suppress the bodies in the multi-bodies part to clarify the drawing view, I can not do that the way I normally do that if I had an assembly and suppressed the component.
Is it something Autodesk can improve on or rather something I overlook.

There is some association between prints and view representations i am missing. My typical process is:
-Build a model
-Create a representation
-Lock the representation
-Create a print from that representation
-Create a new representation and continue to work on the model
When i go back to the original print there is parts flying everywhere (see attached picture - hope you get a kick out of it)

Whenever I do a model update through an ilogic form my View representation changes from default to master and then i have to go and manually change them back to default also in my idw files in order to update the drawing files I have to go in and change the view representation from default to master click ok and close it then open view edit set it to default and close. Is this normal? Is there a setting so that my model views will stay on default?
