AutoCAD Inventor :: Using Decimal And Fractional Dimensions On Same Sheet
Dec 28, 2011
At our plant we try to place all the parts for an assembly on one drawing. i am now working on an assembly with most of the components being fabricated in the shop and using fractional dimensions. However there are a couple of parts that will be machined and should be dimensioned with decimals. When I select a dimension and attempt to alter it it changes the dimension style of the entire drawing. Is there a method of changing only the desired dimensions and not all of them? I could use dual dimensioning and maybe hide the undesired set but I don't know if that would work either.

In older versions of IV I thought that fractional dimensions were automatically changed to decimals in the sketch mode (part modeling) and you could change it to fractional if so desired. In IV2012 they stay fractional, is there a way that I can't find, to make them convert to decimal at the global level or better always show as decimal as standard. I know I can change them at the individual level.

I'm in sketch mode and my drawing dimensions are all in decimal format. How do I change that to a fractional format?
I thought it would be in the styles editor, but when I open that up, I don't see ANY dimension style listed (see picture). I also tried right clicking the actual dimension to view the properties, but that only lets me change the decimal precision (also attached). The help file mentioned the "ANNOTATE" tab, but I don't even have that tab on my ribbon so I'm guessing it's unique to autocad?

I have had a problem with retrieved dimensions decimal precision. I set the precision to 1 decimal place in the ipt but when I retrive the dimension it set the precision to 3 decimal places. I then go to the precision control in the drawing and change it to 1 decimal place.
If I then go back to the ipt and edit the dim, the drawing precision then jumps back to 3 decimal places. (This is particular to the decimal precision for the tolerance of a dimension). How to sort this out?

Way to round decimal dimension values to the nearest 1/16"? For instance, 43.0599 would display as 43.0625 (On a drawing). Tried playing with tolerances, but thought it would be better addressed as customization.

All my dimensions are coming out with the fractional portion being stacked. That has become a problem for clarity reasons and I need them to come out diagnally. Is there a way I can set them to do this automatically and not have to go back and change them via the editor?

I would like to create an component inspection sheet as a second sheet on an Inventor IDW file. This is a sheet that lists all the dimensions on an engineering drawing.
Is there any way I can automatically extract / list dimensions from the enginnering drawing sheet and display them on the inspection sheet.

I need to show feet and meters in my drawing. I got them to show up, however the decimal is in the wrong spot. Instead of it being 1.8288 meters for 6 ft., it's showing as 1828.8. Everything I read says to 'just move the decimal'. But how do I do that without overriding the actual dimension?

I wanted to select dimensions and change the precision to 2 decimal points.
For any dimensions I positioned on the object (like the width of the block centered in the block)...rather than above, below or off to the side. I am unable to select that dimension. Every time my cursor goes towards the dimension to select it.....the block itself is automatically selected. Any dimension outside the boundary of the object is fully selectable to edit.

I'm using Inventor 2012. Is there a way to force a fractional display in 64ths? Like, I know all about changing the dimensional precision to 64ths... but even when doing that, if you have a dimension that is ".375", w/ 1/64 precision set, it will still display as "3/8". I need it to show "24/64". Because apparently we have people using rulers who don't know how to use rulers, and apparently it has been decided that it's better to have them always count out the 64ths, then to teach them about crazy, mind-bending concepts like "16ths" or "8ths"...

I am using parameters from a .ipt file to display dimensional information on a drawing file I have created (the fields colored red are the parameters it is reading). How do I get them to display as fractions instead of decimal? I want it to read 5"1/2 instead of 5.5", for instance. I have tried inputting them as fractions in the parameters dialog in the part file, but no luck, they still come out as decimal.
See attachment for reference.

This would be for standard, not custom cc parts. I read that you can save a cc part file as a template with the G_L parameter set as fractions, and then use it to replace the family template in cc, but that doesn't work (or I'm doing it wrong). It worked once, then stopped? I know there has to be a way of doing this.
I tried exporting values from cc as custom iProps, then tried to populate description iProp with these, but that doesn't work.

When the modify dimensions box is open, the 'roundoff' menu gives me 1/16", 1/8" etc, even when DECIMAL is selected as the unit format.
This wasn't happening earlier, not sure what's going on. [in fact in a solved problem from earlier, a colleague found a drawing that had units set to millimeters, had its insertion scale set to inches! Different computer, so not related].

I typically as much as possible like to insert my dimensions into my drawing from my model.
I created holes in the model as a 1/4" tapped hole
Yet when I show the dimensions in the drawing they show the minor dimension.
How do I get the 1/4" to show? I have selected the feature and still get these results.

I found out that if you have a dimension that is keyed you cannot use the custom property format in the fx. so how do I get ilogic to convert to fractions rounded to a 32nd.
When I put this (see below) in my code it changes my custom iproperty to a yes-no
fractionString = RoundToFraction(Dim_F, 1/32, RoundingMethod.Round)
Here is my code that drives my table in a drawing but the dimensions come as decimal and I need fractions.
If Hole_F_Type = "NONE" TheniProperties.Value("Custom", "F")= "-"ElseIf Hole_F_Type = "2-Hole" TheniProperties.Value("Custom", "F")= Parameter("Dim_F")ElseIf Hole_F_Type = "S1" TheniProperties.Value("Custom", "F")= "S1"& "-" & Parameter("Dim_F")ElseIf Hole_F_Type = "S2" TheniProperties.Value("Custom", "F")= "S2"& "-" & Parameter("Dim_F")ElseIf Hole_F_Type = "S3" TheniProperties.Value("Custom", "F")= "S3"& "-" & Parameter("Dim_F")End If

I did, a couple of months ago, a part with a rule containing some input boxes. It worked without a bug and set it as a specific template, on Inventor 2012.
I tried to reuse it as a template without changing its rule on Inventor 2013. When the input box pops out and ask the value it needs, if I type "0.2" it says that "string's conversion "0.2" in a 'double' type isn't valid". But if I type "0,2" I have absolutely no problems.

Why does the Round() function require that the number of decimal places be either a number or an object if you want to use a variable? It seems that a Single should work here, but iLogic won't accept it.
See sample code below which is rounding off dimension values. If I dim the variable "somenumber" as Single or Double, I get this error message from the Round() function: "Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'Round' can be called without a narrowing conversion."
When I dim "somenumber" as an object it works, but this seems unnecessary when all it is storing is a single digit number. Why wouldn't Single or Double work for this variable?
Here's the code snippet:
'Dim Current Sketch & Count Constraints
Dim oSketch As Sketch = ThisApplication.ActiveEditObject
Dim oDimCount As Single = oSketch.DimensionConstraints.Count
[Code]....

I'm using ilogic to automatically build standardized descriptions that are linked to a field in our PDM system for future searches. The problem is that the variable "Length" (shown below) can sometimes be a whole number so it drops the trailing zeros and I want it to always be a two decimal value.
Formula:
iProperties.Value("Custom", "2ND_SUBTITLE")=CStr(ID)+" ID x "+CStr(OD)+" OD "+CStr(Round(Length, 2))+" LG"
Computed String Value
2.701 ID x 3.253 OD x 8 LG
