AutoCAD Inventor :: Selecting Solids With Certain Extrusion Features
Apr 22, 2013
When I try to select several solids for an extrusion cut/interference I can do so fairly quickly by selecting all of them in the browser so long as the extrusion is set to "all" or "distance".
For some reason when I need to do a "to" or "between" I have to select them one at a time. Every time I select a solid the select solids options returns to the input so that I have to select one solid then press the "Solids" button and select another one. This tends to do the same thing if I create an extrusion and then want to later modify the solids taking part in the extrusion. Is there an option I can turn off?

I have a multibodied part (roughly 700 parts) and I need to do a cut extrusion. The problem is that when I'm cutting through a hundred or more solids I might miss one if it's close to the edge. I though, no problem I'll just go back to the extrusion command and add those solids I missed. Problem, the program only lets me select one solid and undoes all I had previously.

I need to do a cut extrusion on a multibodied part and need to select the solids. As of right now I have to select each one individually rather than doing a drag box or something like that. how I can do this fast, I've got a multibody part w/ over 1000 solids (I didn't create it, yes I know this is probably excessive).

I'm trying to understand extrusion to 3D solids better. This started when I drew a joined, closed 3dpolyline and found it wouldn't extrude (the shape titled 3D POLYLINES 4 sides joined, in the attached DWG), even though everything lies in the same plane (z=0). It gives the error "segment chord not perpendicular to normal". A chord is part of a circle, and there are no circles in the .dwg, so I don't understand the error. If you join only 2 or 0 sides, then at least 2D extrusion to a surface is allowed, but not if all 4 sides are joined, i.e. one 3D polyline.
If I draw regular polylines overtop the 3D polylines, then join and close them, it extrudes into a solid. This suggests that 3D polylines can't be extruded into a solid when regular polylines can, yet if I draw some scratch 3D polyline geometry that is joined and closed, these 3D polylines will join. It's as if I've found some secret shape that AutoCAD refuses to allow extrusion on.

The problem is when I select a solid, autocad freezes for about a minute. After that minute, I can execute a command. During that minute of inactivity, I can use anyother program or part of windows normally with no apparent degradation. If I click in an autocad window, toolbar, etc, all the open autocad windows cloud over and the cursor turns to a spinning cursor. Outside of an autocad window the cursor is normal. This is how it works in the noun/verb process, grip editing. However, if a command is issued first, then the selection of solids is instantaneous. The solid(s) are appropriately highlighted and everything proceeds normally in the verb noun approach.
I have played with a variety of suggested performance settings in windows and in autocad. I have updated the graphics drivers so I always have the latest version. I have a quadro fx 3700, 16gb ram, and 2.5 tb of disc space.

I am adding materials to a structural element (HSS8X8), but I need to show a different material/color for certain X-Braces only. When I select the X-Brace elements I want to change the material. all of the HSS8X8 in the whole model get changed too. How do I apply the different materail to the ones that I selected only and not global?

OK, today, or actually just this afternoon I've noticed it has become much harder to select items with the mouse.
Points, nodes, etc...anything where you'd typically hover the mouse over the item and it highlights for you to select it.
For example, lets say you want to project a point from another sketch, or select the center node of a line, etc.
Never really had an issue until this afternoon where now it seems I have to be right on top of the item and I cannot budge one bit or it won't select it. It is now taking me numerous attempts to select things like points (zooming in does not work, points scale accordingly).
Is there a setting somewhere? I can't seem to find such under Tools>Application Options and the like.

I was wondering if it is possible to have 2 solids in 1 part and being able to pick which one I want to see in an assembly and which one I want to see in a drawing?
I have a leafspring that should show up unbended in the drawing (for the supplier) and bended in the assembly (for visual correctness). (I used Reference Sets for this in Unigraphics.)
I'm using Inventor 2012 (64-bit) with SP1 installed.

What's wrong with extrusion 15?
I deleted many features since the file was large, and many features got warnings, but extrusion 15 was the only one with warning in the original file.

First off if I update a sketch block in a derived part, how do I get the sketch blocks to update? Do I have to delete derived item, and rederive it?
Also if I modify a sketch block that is used for a extrusion, how do I get the extrusion to update? Do I have to delete extrusion and rextrude?

I have several IGES files that I need to make into solid models. I have been searching for days on how to do it in Inventor 2012 and everyone says how easy it is, but yet I have no luck. This file was created from a scanned mold and then made using a point cloud.

Any solid shape just tend to go to the right no matter what angle you look at it and as it seems to go towards towards infinity . This is in orthographic view I might add. In perspective view the cube ends within the screen but it far from cubical and changes its appearance as you rotate it. As you can see in the pictures even the axis graphics down to the left is messed up.
Picture one is while I am extruding the 10mm cube. The big orange thing is the arrow used to drag up from the sketch.
Picture two is just the 10mm cube. As you can see the wire frame works just fine and it event hides the edges behind the solid.
I just installed the software on this computer so I suspect it is my graphics card that simply cannot handle the 3D solids. It is a few years old, a NVIDIA Quadro FX 540. The shadows does not work either, probably because I do not have shader model 2.0 or newer. do I have to scrap my computer?

I cut a curved profile using extrusion and mirrored it about the original plane. But It doesn't cut thoroughly ? there is still a surface of the rarer side of the part ?
the original extrude cut was "Through All".When do the same cut gving a distance...it mirrors perfectly..

I am working on detailing an assembly that requires two parts to be bolted together and then have a hole bored through both parts. I want to show the assembly without the bore and then with the bore. I do not want to have to create a derived part. There should be a way of toggling this extrusion in the assembly view, but I have not yet found it.

All of a sudden, my line tool in sketch mode does not connect segment to segment and each individual line can be dragged wherever. This also means I cannot extrude any shapes I make because inventor does not realize the series of line segments create a closed shape. This happens across all part files, old and new.

We've got a lot of pipe added from CC then manually edited the extrusion length (D2) while modeling (not using tube and pipe). Now I want to get pipe lengths from the BOM. Currently the BOM gives the PL parameter as length, which is incorrect.
I know I can rename D2 and mark it as an exported parameter and add that to the BOM.
I think I could also make PL equal to D2 which would also solve the problem.
Both of these solutions would require opening and editing hundreds of parts, taking a LONG time.

We design long overland conveyors that can be kilometers long. In two separate instances, I have extruded a profile along a path that is a few hundred meters long with no problem. However, when the path gets to around 700 meters, the extrusion that worked fine at 600 meters simply falls apart. Does Inventor seriously have a limitation to length of an extrusion?

I have a client who is requesting that I send them ".dwg" files of a particular project. They are asking for both 3D solids AND 2D drawing files.
1.) I can export the assembly files to a 3D DWG easy enough but how do I do it for 83 files using task scheduler or something; I cannot figure it out?
2.) We have used ".dwg" as our native drawing format because we have people here who have a need to open our IV drawings using AutoCAD. Can I just send my client these files, without the supporting part files, and have them open them?
3.) If I just send them a copy of our native ".dwg" files are they going to be able to re-use that geometry somehow? There isn't a real IP concern as these are just pipe supports and platforms made from available steel shapes but I certainly wouldn't want them to be able to take our work and re-use it on a different project without us. If they have to do some crazy stuff like explode and scale and re-dimension these things in order for them to be re-usable on a different project, I would at least prefer that to them just being able to reuse them easily. I guess what I'm saying is that if they are going to re-use this content, I am not going to make it easy for them that's for sure!

How can I export 3D solids from Inventor to AutoCAD as well as reducing their byte size, for example changing assembly solids to a skin.
I do not need the internal components or intelligence of the assembly but I do need the solid body for presentation purposes. Ultimately I will be traveling with these solid drawings on my laptop and need them to be extremely compact.

I am a tech illustrator taking our engineering models and creating dumb solids for architects to drop into CAD drawings. When I take an assembly and try to shrinkwrap it (with the Solid Bodies option) the file still has all the internal ribs and fillets and stand-outs. I have created extrudes to fill gaps and holes and even tried to create single pieces to assemble later to no avail.
