AutoCAD Inventor :: Drawing Hydraulic Steel Pipes
Dec 4, 2011
I am drawing hydraulic steel pipes using the 3d sketch command. I enter in the points representing the change of direction of the center line of the pipe as if it had no bend radii.
The points are entered in using absolute X,Y,Z coordinates, choosing one end of the pipe as 0,0,0.
I then join the points using the line command. I then put the bend radii on using the bend command.
I then draw a 2d sketch of the 2 circles representing the id , od of the pipe on a normal plane at the start point 0,0,0
I then sweep the 2D sketch along the path of the 3D sketch. I then place axes at the center of each straight portion of pipe . I then place points the intersection points of consecutive axes to replicate the original setting out points (3D x,y,z coordinates) that I used in the 3D sketch.
Then I create my idw with 3 orthographic views (showing the relevant axes as a symbols in each view, an isometric view and a coordinate table showing the x,y,z coordinates of each labelled change of direction. I then pull the pipe into an assembly and put the fittings on each end.
This is another IDW showing the fittings and a parts list. I have inventor suite 2012, along with tube and pipe. However I have never tried it.I don't know how it works, maybe it would be better to use that?
Another question on the measuring of pipes. If a sample is made and then backdraughting needs to be done how do you measure it.
Method used before I arrived was measuring lengths and angles. Highly inaccurate. Never worked. Pipes never drawn. Ended up being photographed only, which was not good enough to make spare parts for service technicians in the field, they had to go out to measure on site and make up on site.
I introduced measuring the change of direction vertices of the centreline of the pipe as if there was not bend radius.
More accurate, but highly difficult to measure. Use steel rules and squares. Never right the first time. Always have to check putting the pipe on top of a full scale drawing.
Tried to improve method of measurement by printing out a A0 piece of graph paper and using that as the background to lay the pipe on. Better/easier and more accurate again, but still not spot on, have to check and adjust using the pipe on top of a full scale plot.
Short of buying some type of expensive 3D measuring machine, which in our case would not warrant the cost as we do not do this type of drawing 100 per cent of our time, not even 30 per cent, what is the best method of measuring pipes accurately.

Any good hydraulics fitting library? I have had some success with Parker, but it's still lacking models of lots of their stuff. I've been to the cbliss.com website, which has a lot, but specifically I'm looking for flareless fittings (high pressure hydraulics).

I have been able to get pipe styles etc. and create some hoses but they are not exactly behaving like I thought they would. When I create a hose, some of the points are on the entry and exit of hose clamps, and any of these points seem fully constrained when I looked at the sketch color. I have also created points on the route by entering a distance along an axis or by picking a point offset on a surface or another hose and its seems these are causing the problem when the assembly moves. These points seem to stay in the original position they picked. Is there any way to keep them fixed to the point they where picked on the surface of a part, so if the assembly moves everything updates correctly.
I also wondered if there was a way to set the length of a section between 2 points to allow for the movement of an assembly.

I have a cantilevered arm that must rotate from 0 to 90 degrees. I would like to lift this arm with a hydraulic cylinder. How do I (using Dynamic Simulation in Inventor 2010) graph the actual load that the cylinder is under for each degree of rotation of the arm. I can use the spring/damper/jack joint (using negative values, reverse of a jack) and apply a load and graph this but the load is constantly increasing. In the scenario of lifting this arm the load will actually decrease at some point of rotation. I would like to see the true loads throughout its rotation.

I have an existing drawing that was created in AutoCad 2012. I now have AutoCad mechanical 2013 and when I try to insert a steel member into the drawing (metric) the member inserts very small. How do I solve this problem and get the shapes to insert at the proper scale to the drawing?

How to do profiles in Civil3D and I have created a profile from the surface utilizing a miscellaneous alignment. I have also taken one 12"RCP and made it part of a network along with the catch basin and manhole at its start and end. When I click "draw parts in profile" it places both structures and the pipe, but in reality only a portion of the pipe crosses the alignment. I'd like to only display portions of pipes that cross the alignment at a fixed width form that alignment, say 2' to each side of it.

We created a wellhead stand (top and bottom plates has od of 18" and the body has od of 16.75" thk of 0.5") and ran the stress analysis.
Because we have a cylinder attach vertically to the wellhead stand, so we added the gravity and force (40,000 lb) on the top plate.
Our question is about the wind load. We know there has a software call robot structural analysis but that is not an option yet. And we looked up other pages and knew that we can convert the wind load to pressure. Basically the wind load is on the one side of the hydraulic cylinder (around 13feet tall and od of 6") and rod (around 12 feet tall and od of 4"). But where do we add it to the wellhead stand? on the top plate (flat face) ? or the body (cylinder)?
We attached a sample part. the orange parts = hydraulic cylinder. the green part = top plate. the magenta part = body.

I need to design a platform (total load 5 ton) that needs to be pulled up and lowered with one hydraulic cylinder that operates a cable system. The cable needs to go via wheels and other things to get in the corner of the platform. (I hope you can visualize what i mean with this task)
I wonder if there is a way to simulate cables (or ropes) in Inventor. And if so how can i do it.
I have Autodesk Inventor 2011 Simulation.

I am trying to use iMates names to place a hydraulic adapter into an assembly. The adapter has two male ends - one end with an insert iMate matching a cylinder iMate and one end with an insert iMate matching the hose fitting. When placing the adapter, the iMate names are ignored and it is mated backwards using inferred iMates.
Also, I get an error because it wants to mate new instances of the part to the unconsumed iMate of the part that was just placed (which I guess would place parts into infinity). I have changed around the iMate names and matching names every way I can think of, but the names still are ignored, and it uses other deferred iMates.

I have a sanitary pipe network as well as a storm network. Now I need to extend the sanitary network one extra section. I go to edit the network, and choose the correct parts for structure and pipe from my catalog.
When I choose the draw; pipe only, structure only, pipes and structures it highlights like normal, and in the 'command' box it says to choose an insertion point. When I click an insertion point (either to an existing structure or a new place on the screen) the draw button that was highlighted becomes unclicked and nothing gets drawn. However this is only an issue when pipes only, or pipes and structures is picked. When I choose structures only It works fine.

I've been playing around with Pro for a while now, followed quite a few of the tutorials from Messrs Priester and Bouton - which have been great, and a really good way to learn stuff with Xara.
I'm trying to draw a steel ball bearing 'cos I think that would be great way to experiment with gradients and transparencies, - but like a lot of the black arts of digital graphics I can't get a decent result.

I have a piece of steel that I need to flex. It is a piece of blue tempered spring steel pressed against the corner of a brass pressure transfer. The opposite end of the transfer is tangentlly constrained to a latching mechanism. When the latching mechanism is lifted, the transfer rotates slightly around a screw (made invisible) and the spring is flexed. When the latch is released, the spring returns the latch to the closed position. I have several other assemblies that use the same principal, but some with just a piece of mild steel used as a cover as well as a spring.

I am looking for a material database with more steel types than the ones that are installed in inventor.
Is there a comprehensive database that I can download and install or do I need to add the material one by one.
Normaly I can just copy a existing steel and just use the existing properites and just change the name but I see a risk of this since in the future I may want to simulte a part and then the material data is not correct.
So... is there a good list that I can download and install??

I was wondering if it is possible to change the entire assembly from Default material to steel without having to go into each individual part and changing its material manually (which could take several hours) I am using INV 2012 Pro with SP1 installed.

I was wondering the best way to model a steel tensioner cable in Inventor. The assembly I have designed is of a cable fixed between two brackets which are fastened on two structural beams. I am looking accurately model the cable attachment on the brackets. My inital thought would be to extrude the length of cable through a pre-defined path between the bracket fixing holes however this would not represent a 'true life scenario'.
