AutoCAD Inventor :: Create An Assembly With Representation
Oct 20, 2011
I am trying to create an assembly with different representation. let me take a small example and explain. I am trying to create an assembly with say 2part. 1. A circular base plate of 6in dia (An assembly by itself in my case). 2. A plate on top of that say 4in,3in, 4,5in.
in one representation I want to have the base plate and 4in plate on top with say 0.2in holes going all the way through on 1in bore circle.
In another representation I want to use the same base plate with 3in plate on top with 0.2 in holes on 1.5in bore circle. When I am creating an extrusion in one representation view it is still showing on the other representation too.
I want to know if there is a way to turn off the feature (representation wise) so that when i turn on the 4in plate i can see the 4in holes and when i turn on 3in plate i can see the 3in holes.
I don't want to have multiple ipts for the base plate as i am dealing with an assembly for the base plate. the only difference is the locations of the holes for different top plate. I want to create just one top level assembly.

I have found an strange behaviour of derivin part from assembly when position repre is used.
There are lost or moved some part. It seems that this is another bug in Inventor 2013SP1.1.

I have received a great solution from Bobvdd allowing ilogic control of the view rep in a part file (not an assembly file). The code below works brilliantly when the part file is the active document. However when the part is placed in an assembly and the ilogic is run with the assembly active, the code produces no result. How to modify the top 6 lines of code?
Dim oApp As Inventor.Application
oApp = ThisApplication
Dim oDoc As Document
[Code]....

Trying to do two variations of an assembly using representations. I turned sub-assemblies off in different representations by unchecking "visibility." I can switch back and forth between representations in the assemby and the sub-assemblies go on and off, but drawing views where I've selected a given representation still show the "invisible" assemblies.

We are running Inventor 2013 and I am trying to create a simple positional representation of a small assembly. For some reason, the "New" option is grayed out in the positional representation browser.
I can't remember ever having trouble creating them in past releases.....

When creating a new part in an assembly and I select a face of an existing component, how does Inventor determine the orientation and origin of that new part? I understand how Inventor works when I select the plane/origin of a part or pick out in space in the assembly. But the placement based on the face of an existing component seems random..
I normally do not like creating parts inside of an assembly but I was trying some new workflows.

I am using IV 2010. I have an assembly that is made up of subassemblies and individual parts. Some of the subassemblies share the same parts. I would like to know when I create the BOM for the top level assembly if it can show parts only with no assemblies. I want to get the BOM to combine like parts from all subassemblies in one list. I have tried to use the part only option and it still puts subassemblies in the BOM and breaks the parts out per subassembly.

I'm trying to design a linear bearing that is composed of a billet of material to which six ball bearings are bolted. I was able to create a part representing the ball bearing from the manufacturer's dimensions. I then modeled a lock washer as a part, then an assembly consisting of a ball bearing and a lock washer. I then created an assembly from that assembly, with six of these ball bearing/lock washer assemblies in the desired orientations.
Now that I have the ball bearings oriented in space the way I need them, I need to model the billet to which they will all mount. I did things in this order because the ball bearings are metric, yet the rest of my design is in imperial units, and it just seemed easier to orient the bearings (which will interface with yet another assembly that I have yet to design) first.
I'd like to create my billet using the assembly as a reference. The assembly will tell me where I need holes in the billet to mount the bearings, where I need to cut out material for clearances, etc. I can't figure out how (or if) I can import my assembly into my part file, or what other tools are available to accomplish this task.
I'm attempting to model something similar to this. I've got the six bearings oriented in space, now I need to make the block to which they mount.

I need to create an exploded view of an assembly to show how it's supposed to be put together. "Hey, why not use the slick presentation feature in Inventor? I've already got the model!" It's not working out to be that slick.
Outlined in red, is the "wrong" trail that Inventor put in by default. I added the highlighted trail, which is what I want and reflects how things actually go together. How do I get rid of the one I don't want? Hide turns off both of them. Delete deletes the tweak. All I've found was a workaround where I hide the line in the drawing.

I created a general assembly (GA) and placed several parts and assemblies. After I realized there are too many parts and assemblies in the GA to reasonably place on a drawing. Now I want to remove some parts and create sub-assemblies. Is there an easy proceedure to select some parts in the GA and insert them into a new sub-assembly and (hopefully) keep the constraints intact?

I want to create some modules for a platform deck. The modules are made of C5x6.7 channels in one direction, L2x2x3/16 angle stiffeners in the other direction, and 3/16" deck plate on top.
My "drivable" parameters will be length and width.
The modules will all be different sizes, so I need to be able to have every instance of the assembly be different.
The workflow I was attempting to do before I got stuck was this:
1. Create a skeleton part (just a sketch) with Length and Width parameters.
2. Insert in an assembly and use frame generator to build the structural shapes (channels and angles)
3. Insert another part (the 3/16" plate) that can reference the length and width and adjust to be the correct module size.
Is there a way to make parts in an assembly all follow the same parameters? More importantly, can each instance of this assembly show up differently and be adjustable when I place these modules in my main assembly?
I don't know much about iParts - but it looks like an iPart lets you choose from predefined dimensions - I want something that I can custom input any size I need.

I created an assembly of parts and then converted my assembly to a weldment. I then realized that I need to create a sketch and make an edit to my assembly. The sketch command is greyed out however. I did some trouble shooting and realized that once I converted it, it no longer allows me to make edits. Is there anyway I can get around this? do I now have to re-create the entire assembly to make this edit at the assembly level? If so this would really suck since it is a rather large assembly. I see saving as a new IAM doesn't work as well.

if there is any way to create a new 'FeatureBasedPattern' within an assembly document. I have 2 assembly occurences - parts. In the Part1 i created a RectangularPattern of workpoints. The Part2 is going to be used in the new pattern. I tried the following VBA code, but it doesn't work.
Dim oPart1 As ComponentOccurrence
Set oPart1 = oAssDef.Occurences.Item(1)
Dim oPart2 As ComponentOccurrence
Set oPart2 = oAssDef.Occurences.Item(2)
Dim oTG As TransientObjects
Set oTG = ThisApplication.TransientObjects
[code]...
The Call function breaks with: "Invalide procedure call or argument". I also tried "Set oAssemblyPattern = oAssDef.OccurencePatterns.etc...." instead of Call function, but with the same result. Same error for declaration change of "oAssemblyPattern" to "FeatureBasedOccurrencePatternProxy".

Im after programmatically mating 2 components together in an assembly. My stages are as follows:
1)Create New Assembly
2)Add .ipt's
3) One-by-one, mate all the parts together (each part has a plane named "WPStart" and "WPEnd". In each part im after the WPStart being flush mated with the WPEnd of the 2nd part - see image attached. In addition I would like to mate al the XZ planes in each of the parts fluch together and likewize the YZ planes.
3) Mate the parts together
Dim FlushConst As FlushConstraint
FlushConst.AffectedOccurrenceOne = oAssyDoc.ComponentDefinition.Occurrence.Item(1).Workplanes.ItemByName("WPStart") <--------
FlushConst.AffectedOccurrenceTwo = oAssyDoc.ComponentDefinition.Occurrence.Item(2).Workplanes.ItemByName("WPEnd") <--------

I've got some IGES files, which I want to place into an assembly, and then create a drawing of the assembly.
If I open the IGES and place it in a drawing it works. If I create an assembly, place the same part, and then try and put the assembly into the drawing it doesn't work.
Attached is the IGES file. I'm using Inventor 2011.

To increase the speed of production, I like to generate idws of flat patterns from assembly. The following iLogic rule work fine inside a metal sheet (I had to create flat pattern before run this rule).
Imports Inventor.ViewOrientationTypeEnumImports Inventor.DrawingViewStyleEnumDim oDrawingDoc As DrawingDocumentDim oPartDoc As DocumentDim oSheet As sheetDim oTG As TransientGeometryDim oView1 As DrawingViewDim oOptions As NameValueMapoPartDoc
[Code] ........
But from an assembly there are some problem ( firstable I'm not an expert of vba and ilogic)
Imports Inventor.ViewOrientationTypeEnumImports Inventor.DrawingViewStyleEnumfmgr = ThisApplication.FilemanagerFor Each file In fmgr.filesdoc = ThisApplication.Documents.ItemByName (file.fullfileName)compdef = doc.ComponentDefinition' For each assembly or subassembly'If (doc.documenttype = 12291) Then For Each occ In compdef.Occurrences' For sheet metal or part

On one part, I have a bore hole drilled on a curved surface so the hole is actually an ellipse.
Now the other part I am trying to constrain together is the pipe that will be welded into the bore hole; so that is a simple circular pipe.
The issue is that the pipe has to be inserted 0.25" above the interior of the bore hole to allow for room for the weld. In order to do this I have tried to create a plane attached to the 3D ellipse and then constrain the pipe to be 0.25" above that plane. The problem is I cannot seem to create a plane attached to the 3D geometry; I cant even find a way to attach points, or pick the center point of the bore hole.
How to create a plane on 3D geometry and link it to said geometry. I'm using 2012, if that is necessary information.

I'm trying to create an assembly and there's one part of one piece I'm struggling with. I attached a quick sketch I made of it. I'm struggling with the bend portion that I lined in. If my drawing doesn't make sense, that piece is 5" long, the bend is 5/8", and it's a cylinder. I'm sure it's really easy but I'm blanking. I've tried the bend tool to no avail.

I create an IDW view of a subassembly by inserting the parent assembly, make it a non-associative view, then turn off visibility of unwanted subassemblies. When later working in the model and adding a part to one of the non-visable sub-assemblies, that part becomes visable in the IDW views in which the subassembly was non-visable, requiting me to edit all veiws in which the subassembly was non-visible. This can be quite a number of instances. Is there a way to prevent this?
I may have a more fundamental workflow problem: I create assemblies composed of subassemblies that need to be detailed sperately. I have found that in order to correctly create a structured BOM and to have the ballon lables to correspond to the structured BOM, I create the drawing views as described above. If I would just insert the subassembly to detail it, I don't understand how to get it to relate the balloon labels in the subassembly view to my master BOM.

Is it possible to suppress features such as hole using LOD or view rep, which are made at the assembly level? or I have to use another method? See below in highlighted.
