AutoCAD Inventor :: Calculating Combined Length Of Extruded Parts

Mar 26, 2012

Is there a function in Inventor 2012 for Inventor to quickly calculate the combined length of a collection of extruded parts?

What I want is to multiple select a series of extruded lengths in the browser, hit a button and see a total length.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Finished Length Is Not Same As Initial Extruded Solid

Apr 19, 2013

After creating a solid and made some cutting, notching etc. the finished length is not the same as the initial extruded solid. so to get the length of the final solid ,

1. I would project geometry , and get the extreme end to get the finish length, this reference dim is now shown in parameter,

2. Go to parameter and change this ref dim name to "length" ,

3. Check the export box ,

4. Right click this ref dim to change the custom property format

5. Where i would uncheck the "units string" box

All these steps to extract the length of a single part , so just imagine if my assembly consist of 50 parts, i would do this 50 times! and usually i have almost a hundred assembly to work everytime.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Calculating Tube Length (not Tube And Piping)?

Mar 16, 2013

I have a question about calculating the maximum tube length. Why do i ask this, because you can just measure it on drawing?

I'm building a parametric model for building simple storage tanks, and the goal is to get a complete BOM out of the model without any difficulties.

I have 4 possibilities of tube positioning on the tank. (see image)

1. A tube that stands in the center of the axis of the main tank.

2. A tube that stands in the center of the axis of the main tank, but under an angle

3. A tube that doesn't stand in the center of the axis of the main tank.

4. A tube that doesn't stand in the center of the axis of the main tank, but under an angle

These 4 possibilities can be flush with the inside of the tank or not.

Is there a easy way to determinate the longest point from the front of the tube? This longest measurement will be the length i need to get into my description for the BOM.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Parts List - Generate Total Length In Inches

Jun 7, 2013

I use my parts list to generate a total length in inches of the same part that is used in several places in my assemblies.  I then export it to excel, convert it to feet, etc.  I've been doing this for some time now and it works great.  The problem I am now having is I forgot how I got this magic to happen and I need to set another part to appear with it's total length in the list.  From what I remember I set the QTY column in the parts list to show the length of the part and then I set the parts list to merge the same parts.  For the life of me I can't remember how I did this.  How this is done correctly?

All of the parts are created by the frame generator if this matters.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Fractional Length For Standard Content Center Parts

Jan 17, 2013

This would be for standard, not custom cc parts.  I read that you can save a cc part file as a template with the G_L parameter set as fractions, and then use it to replace the family template in cc, but that doesn't work (or I'm doing it wrong).  It worked once, then stopped?  I know there has to be a way of doing this.

I tried exporting values from cc as custom iProps, then tried to populate description iProp with these, but that doesn't work.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Using Model Dimensions To Fill LENGTH / WIDTH Fields In Drawing Parts List

Mar 1, 2013

In our “Parts list” (or BOM as we call it) on our .idw’s we have field for “LENGTH”. For example, we use round tubing. We would list the cut length of that piece of tube in the “LENGTH” column. As it stands now, we add “LENGTH” as a custom iproperty in the .ipt. Then in the drawing we add that property to the parts list to capture the length. This works fine, but I’m wondering if we can eliminate some steps by capturing the actual dimension from the sketch to automatically populate the “LENGTH” value. Needless to say, this would eliminate room for error (less typing) and will update the value automatically if length is changed or if the part is copied. I suppose the same would apply for “WIDTH” on sheet metal parts... How do I do this?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Combined Styles Library Use

Oct 7, 2011

I am in the middle of an upgrade from 2009 to 2012 and have a styles use question. I am running three flavors of Inventor: Inventor, Inventor Professional, Inventor Factory (based on Pro). The styles library that I am starting with was migrated from 2009 to 2012 and was running both IV series and Pro Seats. Although no real Pro functionality was ever used so any associated styles were still as delivered for the most part. My working environment is a single Vault project setup where all the styles and libraries are local copies on each workstations drive. All the standard content (styles and libraries) stay checked out to myself on my machine for protection.

So here is what I did to make an all inclusive styles library that all flavors of products will use. pick this apart if you see something wrong with the method.

1) I started with the migrated styles library from 2009

2) As I installed the different flavors I copied the new styles libraries over the existing migrated one without allowing it to "overwrite" any existing styles files. This only populated the styles libraries with any thing I was missing from any of the flavors.

3) I use this combined library on all station regardless of the flavor installed. So some stations have styles on them that are not in use by the installed software.

AutoCad :: Can Dynamic Blocks Be Made To Add Or Delete Parts Based On Length

Jan 4, 2012

in order to streamline some of my duties i wonder if theres a way to have a dynamic block not only that can change it's length and the dimension for that length (easy) but will also add features to the part. For example can one be made that when stretching its length that once it reaches a certain length automatically split into two sections and keep those 2 sections equal? Also can it be made to contain a tag that keeps track of the lengths as well as number of joints between sections multiplied by a constant?

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Angle Either End Of A Piece Of Material After It Is Extruded

Dec 14, 2012

I'm new to autodesk. I cannot seem to figure out how to angle a piece of material after it has been extruded.

For example, If I create a shape ie. a 10mm square and extrude the shape to a length of say 100mm, and want to miter either end at 45 degrees so as I can join them to create a 90 degree angled piece....

How do I angle the end of the extruded piece?

I know it can be done with a simple chamfer but this is not ideal when dealing with more complicated shapes.

I am using autodesk 2012.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Propagate Extruded Cuts To Components

Feb 5, 2012

I have two simple parts: an (almost) rectangular prism and a simple polygonal extrusion. The polygonal extrusion needs to be situated inside the prism, so I placed them in an assembly constrained the polygonal extrusion made a sketch on the extrusion with a simple 1/8 outward Offset of the profiledid a Model >  Modify Assembly > Extrude using the profile and Through All selected removed the polygonal extrusion as a participant to get the desired effect (in the photo, the offset is enlarged for clarity):

This works perfectly at the assembly level. However, I would also like this cut to be propagated to the rectangular part itself (the part through which the cut passes). When I open the part file, I still see the original part without the cut. Is there a way I can cut the part itself without recreating the shape in the part to be cut?

I've tried using Model > Create > Derive with the intention of using Model > Modify > Combine with an operation mode of Cut, but when I Derive the part, it is placed in the wrong location:

AutoCAD Inventor :: Calculating Total Volume

I want to know if it is possible to calculate the water displacement volume of an assembly if it were immersed in water.

In other words,  I want to create a file in which ALL hollow spaces inside structural members, valves, pipework etc are assumed to be solid so that when that assembly is dropped in water, the total volume of water being displaced will be equal to the iProperty value for volume.  I know its possible to hole patch when creating a shrinkwrap,  but this is only effective for 'circular' hollow spaces and does not fill obscure or rectangular shaped empty volumes.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Only Allow Sketch Entities If Directly Associated To Extruded Feature

Aug 12, 2012

This circle is then extruded "Through All".

My question is, How can I eliminate the construction "Circles" and "Lines" from the following code, only allowing sketch entites that are directly associated to an extruded feature to be accepted?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Quickest Way To Create Part That Starts Off As Basic Extruded AISC Shape?

Dec 10, 2013

I am new Inventor user (2014 version) trying to get up to speed on best practices and the most efficient work flows. I find myself designing individual parts that start off as base AISC shapes (angles, square tubes, rectangular tubes, etc.).  These are parts that start off as base extrusions that then have multiple machining operations performed on them.  In most cases, the parts are stand along parts that aren't involved in any type of frame.

In these cases, I generally sketch the profile from scratch using my AISC book and then extrude.  I'm sure this is silly.  Frame generator already has the profile data built in- so why am I sketching these profiles from scratch?  But using frame generator in an assembly environment to make a single member part seems silly to me also.  Why should there be an assembly file at all?  I just want a single part that starts off as some length of some standard profile.  Using frame generator in an assembly environment seems like overkill.

What is the best practice for starting off a part with some length of a standard ANSI, ISO, or other profile?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Showing Two Instances Of Parts List And Adding Custom Parts

Mar 30, 2012

On the main sheet of my drawing I have the overall Parts List.  Shows almost all parts except for the few that we don't want to list.  On the second sheet I inserted a Parts List to show only parts that are shown in a detail on that page, made the rest non-visible.

On the main sheet there is an item (#13) that has a QTY of 3.  Two of those Three are optional parts.  What I'm trying to do is insert a custom part into the Parts List, give it an item number of 13A and put in the description "OPTIONAL", then do an Override in the balloon to show 13A.

I get it in the Parts List, Apply it, close it, save the drawing.  Looking at the Parts List, item #13A is there, but item #14 is gone.  I go back into the Parts List and 13A is there and there's a blue box around the item # and the description.  I uncheck Static Value and number 14 shows up (item # and the description).

Then I go over to sheet two, open that Parts List and it lists 13A at the bottom with all the info I added in sheet one and it's non-visible.  Go back to sheet one, open the Parts List and there is no 13A to be found.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Creating Parts With Work Planes Defined By Other Parts

May 2, 2013

I am working on an assembly that is designed around a box (bounding box) that could change size.  I modeled the bounding box and placed it in a new assembly file.  All other parts have been created within the assembly by referencing that bounding box with starting work plane and project geometry.

The problem comes in when I change the bounding box dimensions.  The work planes for each additional part, which were defined by the faces of the bounding box, do not move when the sides move.  Also, my projected geometry is not updating correctly.  This is a simple box, with all 90° corners.  So, all associated parts (at this point) are just rectangles.
